8:176 Եւ մինչդեռ յայսմ պատրաստութեան էին սուրբքն, խաւսել սկսաւ ընդ նոսա Դենշապուհ եւ ասէ. «Արքայ յղեաց զիս առ ձեզ. ամենայն աւեր աշխարհին Հայոց, ասէ, եւ կոտորածք զաւրացն՝ որ հասին ի վերայ, ի ձէնջ եղեն վնասքն ամենայն. եւ բազում նախարարք, որ այժմ կան կապանաւք չարչարեալ, վասն ձերոյ յամառութեանդ եղեւ այդ ամենայն:
| 8:176 While the saints were engaged in these preparations, Denshapuh began to speak with them, saying: “ The king sent me to you. All the desolation of Armenia, he says, and the losses of troops which have occurred— all these disasters were brought about by you; and it was because of your obstinacy that many nobles are now tortured in bonds:

8:177 Այլ եւ արդ եթէ կամիք ինձ լսել՝ ասեմ ձեզ. որպէս եղերուք պատճառք ամենայն չարչարանաց մահուն, այսաւր լերուք պատճառք կենաց ձերոց:
| 8:177 However, if you wish to listen to me, I shall tell you how today you may save your lives, just as you caused all the torments of death:

8:178 Եւ նախարարքն՝ որ կան ի կապանս, ի ձեռն ձեր է իշխանութիւն արձակել զնոսա. եւ աւեր աշխարհին ձերոյ ձեւք շինի, եւ բազումք որ վարեալ են ի գերութիւն, անդրէն դառնան:
| 8:178 The power is in your hands to free the nobles who are imprisoned. The ruined country can be restored by your hands, and many who have been taken into captivity can return:

8:179 Ահա դուք ձերոյին աչաւքդ տեսէք այսաւր, եթէ զորպիսի՛ այր տոհմիկ, զոր թագաւորն ինքնին յականէ յանուանէ ճանաչէր վասն մեծի գիտութեան աւրինացս մերոց, եւ կատարեալ էր յամենայն ի դենիս եւ ամենայն մեծամեծաց սիրելի, եւ գրեթէ բոլոր աշխարհս կախեալ էր զնմանէ, եւ վասն զի անարգեաց զդենի մազդեզն, եւ պատրեցաւ ի ձեր տխմար գիտութիւնդ, ոչ ինչ խնայեաց թագաւորն ի մեծ պատիւ նորա, այլ իբրեւ զգերի մի զանաշխարհիկ շկաւթակ արարի զնա յայնչափ աւտարութիւն հեռաւոր, զի ընդ երթալն իսկ ոչ ժամանէ ի տեղի պատուհասին իւրոյ:
| 8:179 Behold, you have seen with your own eyes how an illustrious man whom the king himself knew personally for his great knowledge of our rites, and who was perfectly versed in all our religion and beloved of all the magnates, and on whom almost all this land depended— because he despised the Mazdean religion and was tricked into your foolish science, the king did not have regard for his great honor, but like a foreign captive I banished him to such a distant exile that in his journey he will never reach the place of his punishment:

8:180 Արդ եթէ ի բուն դայեկութիւնն վասն պատուական աւրինացն ոչ խնայեաց ի նա, ո՛րչափ եւս առաւել ի ձեզ յաւտար աշխարհիկսդ, որ մահապարտ իսկ էք յիրս արքունի:
| 8:180 Now if he did not spare his own foster brother because of our honorable religion, how much less will he have regard for you foreigners who are guilty of treachery:
|
8:181 Եւ չիք ինչ ձեզ այլ հնար կենաց, բայց եթէ երկիր պագանիցէք արեգական, եւ կատարիցէք զկամս թագաւորին, որպէս եւ ուսոյց զմեզ մեծն Զրադեշտն:
| 8:181 There is no other way to save your lives except by worshiping the sun and fulfilling the king’s desires, just as the great Zoroaster taught us:
|
8:182 Եւ եթէ զայդ առնէք, ոչ միայն արձակիք ի կապանացդ եւ ապրիք ի մահուանէ, այլ եւ մեծամեծ պարգեւաւք յուղարկիք յաշխարհն ձեր:
| 8:182 If you do this, not only will you be released from your bonds and saved from death, but you will also be sent back to your country with munificent gifts:

8:183 Յառաջ մատեաւ Ղեւոնդ երէց եւ թարգման կացոյց զՍահակ եպիսկոպոս. «Զիա՞րդ լուիցուք, ասէ, երկդիմի հրամանացդ քոց. ահա զերկրպագութիւնդ նախ ետուր արեգական, եւ զկատարումն երկրպագութեան ի կամս թագաւորին ձգեցեր. մեծարեցեր զարեգակն՝ յառաջ ձայնելով զանուն նորա, եւ մեծացուցեր զթագաւորն աւելի քան զարեգակն. եւ յայտ արարեր՝ եթէ առանց կամաց իւրոց սպասաւորէ արեգակնն արարածոց, իսկ թագաւորն ի կամս ազատութեանն իւրոյ՝ զոր կամի աստուածացուցանէ, եւ զոր կամի ծառայեցուցանէ. եւ ինքն ի ճշմարտութեանն վերայ չեւ է հասեալ:
| 8:183 The priest Ḷevond stepped forward, and making Bishop Sahak interpret, spoke: “ How could we obey your equivocal orders? Behold, first you rendered worship to the sun, then you attributed the carrying out of that worship to the wishes of the king. You honored the sun, loudly proclaiming his name; yet you honored the king more than the sun. You indicated that the sun serves creatures without so willing, but that the king of his own free will divinizes whom he wishes and enslaves whom he wishes; yet he himself has not yet attained the truth:

8:184 Մի՛ խաւսիր ընդ մեզ իբրեւ ընդ տղայս, զի հասակաւ կատարեալ եմք, եւ գիտութեան ոչ եմք անտեղեակ:
| 8:184 Do not talk to us as if we were children, for we are grown up and not unversed in knowledge:
|
8:185 Ուստի սկսար դու, այտի տաց քեզ պատասխանի:
| 8:185 I shall respond beginning from where you began:
|
8:186 Ապաքէն զմեզ եդիր պատճառս աւերածոյ աշխարհին մերոյ եւ հարուածոց զաւրացն արքունի. մեր աւրէնքն զմեզ այդպէս ոչ ուսուցանեն, այլ յոյժ պատուել հրամայեն զերկրաւոր թագաւորս, եւ սիրել զնոսա յամենայն զաւրութենէ մերմէ, ոչ իբրեւ զմարդ ոք դուզնաքեայ ի մարդկանէ, այլ իբրեւ Աստուծոյ ճշմարտի կալ ի ծառայութեան. եւ եթէ զրկիմք ինչ ի նոցանէ, փոխանակ ընդ երկրաւորիս զերկնիցն խոստացաւ մեզ զարքայութիւն:
| 8:186 Now you fixed on us the blame for the ruin of our country and the losses of the royal army. Our religion does not so teach us but enjoins us very strictly to honor earthly kings and to respect them with all our strength, not as some insignificant man but to serve them as we serve the true God. And if we suffer any wrong from them, he has promised us the kingdom of heaven in return for this earthly one:

8:187 Եւ ոչ միայն զարբանեկութիւն հպատակութեան պարտիմք հատուցանել նոցա, այլ եւ մահու չափ զանձինս ի վերայ դնել սիրոյ թագաւորին:
| 8:187 Not only are we obliged to render them devoted service, but for love of the king we must go so far as to lay down our lives:

8:188 Եւ որպէս յերկրի ոչ ունիմք իշխանութիւն փոխանակել զնա ընդ այլում տեառն, նոյնպէս եւ յերկինս չունիմք իշխանութիւն փոխանակել զճշմարիտ Աստուածն մեր ընդ այլում, որ չիք Աստուած բայց ի նմանէ:
| 8:188 Just as on earth we do not have the power to change him for another lord, so in heaven we have no power to change our true God for another, as there is no other God save him:

8:189 Բայց ասեմ քեզ՝ որում սակաւիկ մի տեղեկագոյն ես:
| 8:189 But I shall speak to you of matters in which you are a little more knowledgeable:
|
8:190 Ո՞վ ի քաջ զաւրականէն զկնի մտանիցէ ի պատերազմ. եւ եթէ զայս արասցէ, ոչ քաջ անուանի նա, այլ յոյժ վատ:
| 8:190 Which brave soldier would enter the battle last? If he were to do that, he would not be called brave but very cowardly:

8:191 Եւ կամ ո՞ յիմաստուն վաճառականաց զպատուական մարգարիտն փոխանակիցէ ընդ անարգ թրուշայի, բայց եթէ յիմարեալ իցէ տգիտութեամբ, որպէս եւ ձեր մոլորութեան առաջնորդքդ:
| 8:191 Or which wise merchant would exchange a valuable pearl for a worthless bead, unless he were to become an ignorant fool like the leaders of your error:

8:192 Միայն գտեր զմեզ ի բազում յառաքինեացն մերոց, եւ կամիս գողութեամբ աւերել զամուրս խորհրդոց մերոց. չեմք մեք միայն՝ որպէս եւ դուդ կարծես. չիք տեղի ունայն, ուր չիցէ Քրիստոս թագաւորն մեր. բայց միայն այնոքիկ են թափուր ի նմանէ, որ իբրեւ զքեզ եւ զչարադեւ իշխանն քո, որք ուրացեալ էք ի նմանէ:
| 8:192 You have singled us out from among many noble colleagues, and you wish to destroy our firm convictions by stealth. We are not alone as you suppose. There is no empty place where our king, Christ, is not present. Only those are deprived of him who have renounced him, like you and your devilish prince:

8:193 Զի եթէ զինուորք աշխարհին մերոյ, որ աշակերտեալքն էին մեւք ի Քրիստոս, առ ոտն հարին զահագին հրամանս թագաւորին ձերոյ, եւ զմեծամեծ պարգեւս նորա առ ոչինչ համարեցան, եւ զհայրենի տէրութիւնն ի բաց կողոպտեցան, չխնայեցին ի կին եւ յորդիս եւ ի գանձս մարմնաւորս կենաց աշխարհիս:
| 8:193 For the soldiers of our country, who had become disciples of Christ through us, trampled underfoot the fearsome commands of your king and regarded as naught his magnificent gifts; they were despoiled of their ancestral dominions and regarded not their wives, children, or the material treasures of this mortal world:

8:194 Նա եւ ոչ զարիւնն իւրեանց ածէին ինչ զմտաւ վասն սիրոյն Քրիստոսի, այլ զերկրպագուս արեգականն, որ ձեր վարդապետք էին, չարաչար հարուածովք սատակեցին զնոսա, եւ մեծամեծ չարիս հասուցին ի վերայ զաւրացն ձերոց, եւ բազումք ի նոցանէ անկանէին ի նմին պատերազմի, եւ այլք մատնեցան ի պէս պէս փորձութիւնս, եւ կէսքն ընկեցան ի հեռաւոր աւտարութիւն, եւ եւս բազմագոյնք վարեցան ի գերութիւն:
| 8:194 Likewise, they did not spare their blood for love of Christ, but slew with harsh blows the worshipers of the sun who were your teachers, and inflicted terrible damage on your troops. Many of them fell in that battle, others were subjected to various trials; some endured distant exile, and still more were led into captivity:

8:195 Եւ ամենեքին նոքա յառաջեցին քան զմեզ յարքայութիւնն Աստուծոյ, եւ խառնեալ են ի գունդս վերին հրեշտակացն, եւ ցնծան ի պատրաստեալ յուրախութիւնս, յոր հասեալ խառնեցաւ երանելի այրն, զոր դու ասես շկաւթակ արարի:
| 8:195 All of them preceded us to the kingdom of God, and have joined the supernal company of the angels. They have entered into the joy and felicity prepared for them, which the blessed man— of whom you said ‘ I have exiled’— has also attained:

8:196 Երանի տամ նմա, եւ երանի երկրին՝ ընդ որ նայն անցանիցէ, եւ տեղւոյն՝ ուր նայն վախճանեսցի. ոչ միայն զարքունեաւք ձերովք անցանէ պատուականութեամբ, այլ եւ զերկնից լուսաւորաւքդ, որում դուքդ երկիրպագանէք:
| 8:196 I call him blessed, and blessed the land through which he will pass and the place where he will die. He surpasses in honor not merely your royal court but even the luminaries of heaven that you worship:

8:197 Ետ պատասխանի Մովան անդերձապետ եւ ասէ ցնոսա. «Աստուածքն բարերար են, եւ երկայնմտութեամբ ջանան ընդ ազգի մարդկան, զի գիտասցեն եւ ծանիցեն զիւրեանց փոքրկութիւնն եւ զնոցա մեծութիւն, եւ վայելեսցեն ի պարգեւս աշխարհիս, զոր տուեալ է յիշխանութիւն ի ձեռս թագաւորի, եւ ի բերանոյ նոցա ելանեն հրաման մահու եւ կենաց:
| 8:197 Movan, the chancellor, said to them in response: “ The gods are benevolent and deal patiently with men, so that they may recognize and learn their own insignificance and the gods’ greatness, and may enjoy the gifts of the world which has been entrusted to the king’s jurisdiction. From their mouths come edicts of death and life:

8:198 Եւ ձեզ ոչ է այդպէս իշխանութիւն ընդդիմանալ կամաց նոցա եւ ոչ առնուլ յանձն զերկրպագութիւն արեգական, որ ճառագայթիւք իւրովք լուսաւորէ զամենայն տիեզերս, եւ ջերմութեամբ իւրով հասուցանէ զկերակուր մարդկան եւ անասնոց. եւ վասն հասարակաբաշխ առատութեանն եւ անաչառ մատակարարութեանն անուանեցաւ Միհր աստուած, զի չիք ի նմա նենգութիւն եւ անիմաստութիւն:
| 8:198 You have no authority thus to oppose their will or to refuse to worship the sun, which illuminates the whole universe with its rays and provides nourishment for men and beasts by its warmth. For its even- handed liberality and impartial dispensation, it has been named the god Mihr, for it has no deceit or incomprehension:

8:199 Վասն որոյ եւ մեք երկայնամիտ լինիմք ի վերայ տգիտութեան ձերոյ. քանզի չեմք մարդատեացք իբրեւ զգազանս շաղղակերս եւ արիւնարբուս:
| 8:199 Therefore, we are long- suffering with regard to your ignorance, because we do not hate men like bloodthirsty, carrion- eating beasts:

8:200 Խնայեցէք յանձինս ձեր, եւ մի՛ խառնէք զմեզ ակամայ յարիւնդ ձեր:
| 8:200 Have regard for your selves and do not taint us against our will with your blood:
