28:0 Վասն ապստամբութեան Տաճկացն որ Կայսիկքն կոչին եւ իշխանին Սիւնեաց ի թագաւորէն Սմբատայ, եւ դարձեալ երկոցունց հնազանդութիւն:
| 28:0 Concerning the rebellion of the Muslims called Kaysikk’ a and of the prince of Siunik’ against the rule of Smbat, and the subjection again of them both:

28:1 Ընդ այն ժամանակս զօրաժողով եղեւ թագաւորն Հայոց Սմբատ ի վերայ Ապահունեաց աշխարհին:
| 28:1 At that time the Armenian king Smbat assembled an army to attack the land of Apahunik’:
|
28:2 Զի որդիքն Աբդռհամանի, որ Կայսիկքն անուանին՝ ապստամբեալ էին ի պետութենէ թագաւորին, տալ հարկս եւ զինուորել որպէս օրէն էր:
| 28:2 For the sons of Abdrahman, who are called the Kaysikk’, had revolted against the king’s authority [refusing] to give tribute and military service as was due:

28:3 Եւ գրէթէ ամենայն իշխանք Հայոց, Վրաց եւ Աղուանից եկեալ էին ընդ զօրս Հայոց ի վերայ աշխարհին Ապահունեաց. էր ընդ իշխանսն եւ մեծ իշխանն Վասպուրական Աշոտ, որդի Դերանկին, եւ ընդ նմա Գրիգոր իշխանն Մոկաց եւ զօրքն Անձաւացեաց: Վասն զի իշխանն Մոկաց եւ իշխանն Անձաւացեաց նուաճեալ էին ընդ ձեռամբ Վասպուրական իշխանութեանն:
| 28:3 Almost all the princes of Armenia, Gēorgia, and Albania came with the Armenian army to attack the land of Apahunik’. With the princes were also the great prince of Vaspurakan, Ashot son of Derenik, accompanied by Grigor prince of Mokk’ and the troops of Andzavats’ik’; for the princes of Mokk’ and of Andzavats’ik’ had submitted to the principality of Vaspurakan:

28:4 Եւ անցեալ բանակեալ էին զօրքն Հայոց ի դաշտին Օշական ի Մանազաւեան նահանգին:
| 28:4 The Armenian army crossed over and encamped on the plain of Awshakan in the province of Manazav:

28:5 Իսկ որ տիրէր աշխարհին Ապահունեաց Կայսիկն՝ զիւր զօրսն առ ինքն գումարեալ եւ որ շուրջ զնովաւ քաղաքայինք եւ ասպատակքն Պարսից, որք ի Յունացն վերայ առնէին արշաւանս:
| 28:5 But the Kaysik who governed the land of Apahunik’ gathered his own forces, including the neighbouring citizens and the Persian brigands who used to make raids against the Greeks:

28:6 Գրէ Կայսիկն առ թագաւորն՝ խնդրել զխաղաղութիւն, եւ զոր միանգամ կամիցի՝ եղիցի. յայտնիքն այսպէս, իսկ ծածուկքն՝ որպէս յայտնեցանն: Եւ թագաւորն յանձն առնոյր զխաղաղութիւնն:
| 28:6 The Kaysik wrote to the king to seek peace and [offering] that whatever he wished should be done. So it was openly, but the secret later became clear. The king agreed to peace:

28:7 Իսկ Կայսիկքն եւ որք ընդ նոսա եւ զօրքն Պարսից զմարտն ի գաղտնիս գրգռէին, եւ երագապէս աճապարեալ հասին հանդէպ զօրուն Հայոց. մինչ նոքա յանհոգս յապահովս բնակէին՝ նոքա զռազմն կազմեալ վառեցին զճակատն. եւ թագաւորն յանկասկածս լինելով՝ փութացան ելին ի բանակէն փախստեայ հարուստ ասպարիսօք:
| 28:7 But the Kaysiks and their allies and the Persian troops were secretly provoking battle and rapidly marched on the Armenian army. The latter were encamped without concern [thinking themselves] in safety, when the former drew up their line and armed for battle. The king [and his army], taken by surprise, quickly fled from the camp by forced marches:

28:8 Իսկ իշխանն Աշոտ եւ իշխանն Մոկաց եւ զօրքն Անձաւացեաց քաջագոյնս արիացան կացին յոտնկայի. եւ վառեալ ի զէն եւ յասպազէն՝ արձանացան իբրեւ զմի այր, եւ յանդուգն դիմացուածով խուռն յարձակմամբ հարեալ ի դիմի, ուր քաջքն այլազգեացն ճակատէին ընդ աջաթեւ կողմն. եւ պատառեցին զգունդն, եւ պարտեցին զախոյեանսն. եւ այն ինչ ի քթթել ականն դարձուցին զղաշիկն, եւ զհետ մտեալ փախստէիցն սուր ի գործ արկեալ՝ դիթաւալ կուտակս կուտակս արկանէին. եւ մնացեալքն փախստեամբ ի Մանազաւեանն անկանէին քաղաք:
| 28:8 But Prince Ashot, the prince of Mokk’, and the troops of Andzavats’ik’ very bravely stood their ground. In full armour and on armed horses they attacked as one man. In a resolute charge they fell on the right wing of the enemy, where the bravest of the Muslims were drawn up. They broke their ranks, defeated their warriors, and in the twinkling of an eye routed their army. Pursuing the fugitives, they put their swords to good use, piling up the corpses. The survivors fled for refuge to the city of Manazav:

28:9 Եւ գոյժն աւետաբեր եհաս զկնի թագաւորին, եւ դարձան եկին պաշարել զքաղաքն:
| 28:9 The bearer of the news caught up with the king, and they turned back to besiege the city:

28:10 Իսկ որք էին արգելեալք ի քաղաքն՝ աղօթականս եւ պաղատանս առ մեծ իշխանն Աշոտ յղէին, զի համոզեսցէ ի մէջ նոցա զխաղաղութիւն. զոր ոչ անփոյթ արարեալ լի բարեմտութեամբ յղփացեալն Աշոտ՝ խօսի ընդ թագաւորին զխաղաղութիւն. զոր ոչ անունկնդիր լեալ ընդունի զհայցելին, առնլով հարկս եւ պատանդս, եւ զբերդն Երիկաւ Հաղացովտի, զոր հանեալ էր մանազաւեցոյն ի բերկրացոյն. նոցա հանեալ էր ի Գինունի ազգէն, ի զարմէ Մեժեժի Գնունոյ, ի վասպուրական բաժնէ, նաեւ Բերկրի բաժին եղեալ էր Վասպուրականի. եւ դարձուցանէ անդէն առ բերկրացիսն, եւ ինքեանք դառնային մեծաւ յաղթութեամբ անպայման խնդութեամբ:
| 28:10 But those immured in the city sent prayers and supplications to the great prince Ashot that he might effect peace between them. Not being indifferent, but rather overflowing with benevolence, Ashot made peace proposals to the king. The latter was not unheedful and accepted the proposal, taking tribute and hostages including the fortress of Erikaw of Halats’ovit, which the lord of Manazav had taken from the lord of Berkri. These had taken it from the Ginuni family descended from Mezhezh Gnuni, although Berkri had been part of Vaspurakan. So he restored it to the people of Berkri. They returned in great triumph and unlimited joy:

28:11 Գործեցաւ այս [ՅԾԱ] թուականութեանս Հայոց եւ ի [Դ] ամի հայրապետութեանն Յօհաննու Հայոց կաթողիկոսի:
| 28:11 This took place in the year [351] of the Armenian era, in the fourth year of the patriarchate of Yovhannēs, Catholicos of the Armenians:

28:12 Եւ եղեւ ի գալ միւսոյ տարոյն՝ Սմբատ իշխանն Սիւնեաց ի բաց եկաց ի հնազանդութենէ թագաւորին Հայոց, արգել առնելով հարկացն տալ թագաւորին, թեւակոխելով Պարսից բռնաւորին հատուցանել զհարկս եւ զհասս. եւ ինքն ժողովեալ զզօրս իւր [ԺՌ] արանց զօրաւորաց՝ եկն եմուտ յամուրսն Վայոց ձորոյ:
| 28:12 When the next year came round, Smbat prince of Siunik’ rebelled against the king of Armenia, prevented the payment of tribute to the king, and endeavoured to direct the tribute and taxes to the tyrant of Persia. He himself gathered his own forces, ten thousand soldiers, and occupied the fortresses of Vayots’- dzor:

28:13 Յայնժամ թագաւորն փութացոյց դեսպանս մի զմիոյ կնի առ իշխանն Աշոտ, զի անյապաղ երագութեամբ հասցէ առ նա:
| 28:13 Then the king rapidly sent messengers one after the other to Prince Ashot [asking him] to come quickly to him without delay:

28:14 Եւ էր գրեալ ի միում թղթի անդ, յիշեցուցանելով զոր ինչ գործեաց Աշոտ ի զօրսն Ապահունեաց զյաղթանակ պատերազմին եւ զհոյակապ անուն ստանալոյն՝ ասէ, «եւ այս եւս գործ կամ խաղաղութեան կամ պատերազմօք եւ ելցեն ի գլուխ, միայն զյապաղանացն ի բաց լքցես զդեգերանս». եւ խոստանայր տալ նմա քաղաքս, գաւառս, գեօղս եւ ագարակս:
| 28:14 In one letter, recalling what Ashot had done against the army of Apahunik’— his victorious war and winning of glorious repute-— he wrote as follows: “ This further task will be accomplished by peace or war, [if] only you put aside distracting delays,” and he promised to give him cities, provinces, villages, and estates:

28:15 Քանզի եւ զոստանն Նախճաւան տուեալ էր ի կալուած զյաղթութեանն մանազաւենին Կայսկի:
| 28:15 For he had [already] given him possession of the city of Nakhchavan for his victory over the Kaysik of Manazav:

28:16 Եւ ինքն թագաւորն ժողովեալ զօր հարուստ աւելի քան զհազարաց հնգից եւ քսանից, եւ եկն անց յայնկոյս գետոյն Երասխայ, եւ բանակեցան ի տեղւոջն:
| 28:16 The king himself gathered a large army of more than twenty- five thousand, and crossed over the river Araxes; they camped at that spot:

28:17 Իսկ իշխանն Վասպուրական, այն ինչ հուպ ընդ հուպ եկն ի ժամադրեալ տեղին. ընդ որ յոյժ ուրախացեալ թագաւորն, իբրեւ զերծեալ ի կասկածանացն, զոր ունէր յիշխանէն Սիւնեաց:
| 28:17 The prince of Vaspurakan arrived posthaste at the rendezvous. At this the king greatly rejoiced, being freed from the fear that he had of the prince of Siunik’:

28:18 Եւ այգուն անցեալ ընդ գետն Երասխ յայնկոյս ի դաշտն Շարուր՝ բանակին զգետովն:
| 28:18 At daybreak he crossed over the river Araxes to the plain of Sharur and camped beside the river:

28:19 Եւ իշխանն Աշոտ գրէ առ իշխանն Սմբատ, անօգուտ զապստամբութիւնն համարելով. համոզեաց ի մէջ երկոցունց եւ գլխաւորեաց զխաղաղութիւն առ նոսա, մինչ գալ Սահակայ եղբօր իշխանին Սիւնեաց, ընդ իւր բերելով զհարկսն:
| 28:19 Then prince Ashot wrote to Prince Smbat, persuading him of the uselessness of his rebellion. He reconciled the two and made peace between them; so Sahak, brother of the prince of Siunik’, came bringing with him the tribute:

28:20 Եւ դառնայ մեծաւ պարգեւօք եւ անհամեմատ խնդութեամբ:
| 28:20 Then he returned with many gifts and unparalleled joy:
