13:1 Յաղագս ընդ արեւելեայս պատերազմին եւ յաղթութեանն, եւ մահուան Նիւքարն Մադեսայ:
| 13:1 Concerning his war against the people of the east, his victory, and the death of Niwk’ar Madēs:

13:2 Եւ վասն զի հաճոյ թուեցաւ մեզ զաշխատութիւնն, որ ի վերայ քոյ հրամանիդ, համարել հեշտութիւն, քան զառ ի յայլոցն որ ի կերակրոց եւ յըմպելեաց լինի խրախճանութիւնք` հաւանեցաք անցանել սակաւուք եւ ընդ կարգ բանից պատերազմացն որ ի Հայկեանն Արամայ:
| 13:2 Because it seemed pleasing to us to regard this work that we have undertaken at your command as a greater delight than those preferred by others- the festivities of banquets and drinking - we have decided to discuss briefly and in order the wars of Hayk’s descendant, Aram:

13:3 Սա այր աշխատասէր եւ հայրենասէր եղեալ, որպէս ցուցանէ նոյն պատմագիր, լաւ համարէր զմեռանելն ի վերայ հայրենեացն, քան թէ տեսանել զորդիս աւտարածնաց կոխելով զսահմանս հայրենեացն եւ հարազատից արեան նորա տիրել արանց աւտարաց:
| 13:3 He was an industrious and patriotic man, as the same historian shows, and he thought it better to die for his father land than to see the sons of strangers trampling his country’s borders and foreigners ruling over his kin:

13:4 Այս Արամ, սակաւուք ամաւք յառաջ քան զտիրելն Նինոսի Ասորեստանեայց եւ Նինուէի, նեղեալ յազգացն որ շուրջ զիւրեաւ` ժողովէ զբազմութիւն ընտանի արանց քաջաց եւ աղեղնաւորաց, եւ որք ի տէգ նիզակի կամակարողք, նորատիք եւ հարուստք յոյժ եւ յաջողաձեռնութիւն իսկ, եւ երեսաւորք ի սիրտ եւ ի պատրաստութիւն պատերազմի, իբր թէ բիւրս հինգ:
| 13:4 This Aram, a few years before Ninos ruled over Assyria and Nineveh, hard pressed by the nations around him, gathered the host of valiant archers related to him; they were also powerful lancers, youthful and very strong, dexterous and handsome, spirited and ready for war, about fifty thousand men:

13:5 Պատահէ Մեդացւոցն երիտասարդաց, որոց առաջնորդէր Նիւքար ոմն ասացեալ Մադէս, այր հպարտ եւ պատերազմասէր, որպէս ցուցանէ նոյն ինքն պատմագիրն, յեզերս սահմանացն Հայոց:
| 13:5 On the borders of Armenia he met the young Medes who were led by a certain Niwk’ar named Madēs, a boastful and war- loving man, as the same historian indicates:

13:6 Որոց միանգամ քուշանաբար հինիւ սմբակակոխ արարեալ զսահմանս Հայոց` ծառայեցոյց ամս երկուս:
| 13:6 They immediately devastated the borders of Armenia in incursions like the Kushans, and he controlled them for two years:

13:7 Որում յանկարծաւրէն ի վերայ հասեալ Արամ յառաջ քան զծագել արեգական` սատակեաց զբազմութիւն ամբոխիցն, եւ զնոյն ինքն զՆիւքարն զկոչեցեալն Մադէս ձերբակալ արարեալ ածէ յԱրմաւիր, եւ անդ ուրեմն ի ծայրս աշտարակի պարսպին ցից վարեալ երկաթի ընդ ճակատն, յորմն վարսել հրամայէ, ի տեսիլ անցաւորաց եւ ամենայն եկելոց անդր. եւ զաշխարհն նորա մինչեւ ի լեառնն անուանեալ Զարասպ` ի ծառայութեան հարկի կալաւ մինչեւ ցթագաւորութիւնն Նինոսի ի վերայ Ասորեստանի եւ Նինուէի:
| 13:7 But Aram suddenly came upon him before dawn and slaughtered his whole host. He captured this same Niwk’ar called Madēs and took him to Armavir; and there at the summit of a tower of the wall he pierced his forehead with an iron nail and ordered him to be fixed to the wall in view of the passers- by and of all who arrived there. And his land as far as the mountain called Zarasp he subjected to tribute until the reign of Ninos over Assyria and Nineveh:

13:8 Իսկ Նինոս թագաւորեալ ի Նինուէ` յիշատակ քինու զնախնւոյն իւրոյ զԲելայ ունէր ի մտի, ի զրուցաց ուսեալ. եւ զայս խորհէր հատուցանել յամս ձիգս, նկատել որսալ զյաջողութիւն աւուրց, բառնալ ջնջել զամենայն ճետ սերմանեալ յարանց քաջին Հայկայ:
| 13:8 But after Ninos became king in Nineveh he kept in his mind a memory of rancor with regard to his ancestor Bēl, having learned about him from stories. And for long years he planned to take vengeance, to seek out the opportune day to destroy and exterminate the whole race sprung from the descendants of the valiant Hayk:

13:9 Այլ երկիւղ կասկածանաց խարդաւանակ լինելոյ իւրոյ թագաւորութեանն զայսպիսիս համարեալ իրագործութիւնս` ծածկէ զչարութիւնն, եւ հրամայէ նմա զնոյն իշխանութիւն անկասկածաբար ունել. եւ համարձակութիւն տայ նմա վարսակալ ածել մարգարտեայ, եւ երկրորդ նորա կոչել:
| 13:9 But the fear and uncertainty that his own kingdom might fall into danger as he planned such actions made him conceal his evil wickedness. He bade him, Aram to hold that same principality without fear and gave him permission to wear a diadem of pearls and to be called second after himself:

13:10 Այլ այս շատասցի ասել այսչափ. քանզի չթողացուցանէ զմեզ որ առաջիկայս է իր` յեզերումն յամել այսր պատմութեան:
| 13:10 But let this much suffice, for the task before us does not allow us to linger at the threshold of our history:
