15:1 Յաղագս Արայի, եւ մահուան նորա պատերազմաւ ի Շամիրամայ:
| 15:1 Concerning Ara and his death in war at the hands of Semiramis:

15:2 Արայ սակաւ ամաւք յառաջ քան զվախճանելն Նինոսի խնամակալեաց իւրոց հայրենեացն, նոյնպիսում շնորհի արժանաւորեալ ի Նինոսէ` որպէս եւ հայրն իւր Արամ:
| 15:2 Ara, a few years before the death of Ninos, acquired the government of his ancestral lands, being considered worthy of such a favor by Ninos, like his father Aram:

15:3 Բայց վաւաշն այն եւ բորբորիտոնն Շամիրամ ի բազում ամաց լուեալ զգեղեցկութենէ նորա` ցանկայր հասանել. այլ ոչ ինչ յայտնապէս զայսպիսիս իշխէր գործել:
| 15:3 But the dissolute and lascivious Semiramis for many years had heard of his beauty and desired to visit him; but she was not able to do such things openly:

15:4 Իսկ յետ վախճանելոյն, կամ փախստական լինելոյն Նինոսի ի Կրետէ, որպէս հաւանեալ եմ, համարձակ պատուելով Շամիրամայ զախտն` առաքէ հրեշտակս առ Արայն գեղեցիկ` ընծայիւք եւ պատարագաւք, բազում աղաչանաւք եւ խոստմամբ պարգեւաց, գալ առ նա ի Նինուէ, կա՛մ առնուլ կնութեան եւ թագաւորել ի վերայ ամենայնի` որոց տիրէր եւ Նինոս, եւ կամ կատարել զկամս ցանկութեան նորա եւ դառնալ մեծաւ պատարագաւք եւ խաղաղութեամբ ի տեղի իւր:
| 15:4 However, after the death of Ninos, or his flight to Crete as I believe, Semiramis freely paraded her passion and sent messengers to the handsome Ara with gifts and offerings, requesting with many entreaties and the promise of gifts that he come to her in Nineveh, either to marry her and reign over the whole empire that Ninos had ruled, or to satisfy her desires and then return to his own land in peace with magnificent gifts:

15:5 Եւ ի բազում անգամ երթեւեկութեան հրեշտակագնացութեանն լինել, եւ յոչ հաւանել Արային, ի սաստիկ ցասման լեալ Շամիրամայ` ի վախճանի պատգամաւորութեանն առնու զբազմութիւն զաւրաց իւրոց, եւ փութայ երթալ հասանել յերկիրն Հայոց ի վերայ Արայի:
| 15:5 Many times the ambassadors came and went, but Ara did not agree. Semiramis became exceedingly angry, and at the end of these negotiations she took the host of her army and hastened to the land of Armenia against Ara:

15:6 Բայց որչափ ի դիմացն էր նշանակեալ, ոչ այնչափ ի սպանանել զնա եւ ի հալածել փութայր, քան թէ ի նուաճել կամ զբռամբ ածել, զի լցցէ զկամս ցանկութեան իւրոյ. զի առ յոյժ ցանկականի մոլեգնութեանն, ի բանսն որ զնմանէ` որպէս ի տեսութիւն շամբշութեամբ վառեալ էր:
| 15:6 But, as the result was to show she was anxious not so much to kill him or put him to flight as to subject and dominate him to fulfill her desires. For in the folly of her great passion, at the reports about him she had become madly enflamed as if she had already seen him:

15:7 Գայ հասանէ տագնապաւ ի դաշտն Արայի, որ եւ յանուն նորա անուանեալ Այրարատ:
| 15:7 She arrived in haste at the plain of Ara, which is called Ayrarat after his name:

15:8 Եւ ի լինել ճակատուն` պատուէր տայ զաւրապետաց իւրոց, թէ դէպ լինիցի` հնարել ապրեցուցանել զԱրայն:
| 15:8 And when the battle line was formed, she ordered her generals that if possible, they should attempt to keep Ara alive:

15:9 Իսկ ի լինել մարտին` հարկանի զաւրն Արայի, մեռանի եւ Արայ ի պատերազմին ի մանկանցն Շամիրամայ:
| 15:9 But when the conflict was joined, the army of Ara was routed and Ara died in the battle at the hands of Semiramis’ troops:

15:10 Դիակապուտս առաքէ տիկինն յետ յաղթութեանն ի տեղի ճակատուն, խնդրել ի մէջ դիականցն անկելոց զըղձալին իւր եւ զտարփածուն:
| 15:10 The queen sent despoilers after the victory to the site of the battle to seek out her desired and loved one among the fallen corpses:

15:11 Գտանեն զԱրայն մեռեալ ի մէջ քաջամարտկացն, եւ հրամայէ դնել զնա ի վերնատան ապարանիցն:
| 15:11 They found Ara dead amid his warriors, and she ordered them to place him on the roof of her palace:
|
15:12 Իսկ ի գրգռել միւսանգամ զաւրացն Հայոց ի մարտ պատերազմի ընդ տիկնոջն Շամիրամայ, քինախնդիր լինել մահուանն Արայի` ասէ. «Հրամայեցի աստուածոցն իմոց լեզուլ զվէրս նորա, եւ կենդանասցի:
| 15:12 When the Armenian army had regained its confidence to continue the struggle against Queen Semiramis and to revenge Ara’s death, she said: “ I have ordered my gods to lick his wounds, and he will be restored to life:
|
15:13 Միանգամայն եւ ակն ունէր դիւթութեամբ վհկութեան իւրոյ կենդանացուցանել զԱրայ, ցնորեալ ի տռփական ցանկութենէն:
| 15:13 At the same time she hoped to revive Ara by the magic of her sorcery, being demented by desire for her darling:
|
15:14 Իսկ իբրեւ նեխեցաւ դի նորա` հրամայէ ընկենուլ ի վիհ մեծ եւ ծածկել. զմի ոմն ի հոմանեաց իւրոց զարդարեալ ունելով ի ծածուկ` համբաւէ զնմանէ այսպէս. «Լիզեալ աստուածոցն զԱրայ եւ կենդանացուցեալ լցին զփափագ մեր եւ զհեշտութիւն. վասն որոյ առաւել յայսմ հետէ պաշտելիք են ի մէնջ եւ փառաւորեալք, իբրեւ հեշտացուցիչք եւ կամակատարք:
| 15:14 But when his corpse became stinking, she ordered it to be cast into a great ditch and covered up. One of her paramours she had dressed up in secret, and she gave out this report about him: “ The gods licked Ara and brought him back to life, fulfilling our wish and pleasure. Therefore, from now on they are all the more to be worshipped and honored by us, as they fulfill our pleasures and accomplish our desires:

15:15 Կանգնէ եւ նոր իմն պատկեր յանուն դիւաց, եւ մեծապէս զոհիւք պատուէ, ցուցանելով ամենեցուն, իբր թէ այս զաւրութիւն աստուածոցն կենդանացուցին զԱրայ:
| 15:15 She also set up a new statue in the name of the gods and greatly honored it with sacrifices, pretending to all that this power of her gods had brought Ara back to life:

15:16 Եւ այսպէս համբաւեալ զնմանէ ի վերայ երկրիս Հայոց, եւ հաւանեցուցեալ զամենեսեան` դադարեցուցանէ զխազմն:
| 15:16 And she spread these reports about him over this land of Armenia and convinced everyone, so bringing the war to an end:

15:17 Եւ որ ինչ յաղագս Արայի` կարճառաւտիւ եւ այսչափ շատ լիցի յիշատակել:
| 15:17 As far as concerns Ara it will suffice to record this much in brief:

15:18 Սա կեցեալ ամս` ծնաւ զԿարդոս:
| 15:18 He lived some years and begat Cardos:
