23:1 Կարգ թագաւորաց մերոց եւ համար նոցունց որդի ի հաւրէ առնլով:
| 23:1 The order of our kings and their number from father to son:

23:2 Արդ` այժմ անցից ի թիւ մերոց արանց, մանաւանդ թէ թագաւորաց, մինչեւ ցտէրութիւնն Պարթեւաց:
| 23:2 Now I shall pass to the number of our great men, especially the kings, down to the rule of the Parthians:
|
23:3 Քանզի ինձ այսոքիկ արք ի մերոց թագաւորաց են սիրելիք, որպէս բնիկք եւ իմոյ արեանառուք եւ հաւաստի հարազատք:
| 23:3 For these men descended from our kings are dear to me as compatriots and kindred of my own blood and true brothers:

23:4 Եւ սիրելի էր ինձ` յայնժամ գալ Փրկչին եւ զիս գնել, եւ առ նոքաւք յաշխարհ զմուտն իմ լինել, եւ նոցա տէրութեամբն խրախճանալ, եւ յարդեացս ապրել վտանգիցս:
| 23:4 How dear it would have been for me if the Savior had come at that time and redeemed me and if my entrance into the world had occurred in their time, if I could delight in their rule and escape from the dangers of the present:

23:5 Այլ վաղ ուրեմն փախեաւ ի մէնջ պատահումնն այն, թէ արդեաւք եւ վիճակ:
| 23:5 But that circumstance, or indeed fortune, long ago escaped us:
|
23:6 Բայց արդ ես առ աւտարաց թագաւորութեամբն կացեալ` ընդ նոցայն զմերս ազգի ածից զկարգ թագաւորացն, զի մերոյ աշխարհիս բնիկք պսակաւորք արք այնոքիկ, զորոց զանուանսն ի ներքոյ դրոշմեսցուք:
| 23:6 But now I, living during the reign of foreigners, shall set forth the order of the kings of our nation alongside theirs. The national monarchs of our land were those men whose names we shall inscribe below:

23:7 Եւ զի արդարեւ զայնու ժամանակաւ էր ազգիս մերոյ թագաւորութիւն` վկայէ եւ Երեմիա մարգարէ ի բանս իւր, հրաւիրելով ընդդէմ Բաբելոնի ի պատերազմ. Հրաման տուր, ասէ, Այրարատեան թագաւորութեանն եւ Ասքանազեան գնդին:
| 23:7 And that the kingdom of our nation truly existed at that time is attested by the prophet Jeremiah in his speech when he was urging war against Babylon: “ Command,” he said, “ the realm of Ayrarat and the troop of Ask’anaz:

23:8 Եւ այս հաւաստի գոլոյ մերոյ թագաւորութեանն առ այնու ժամանակաւ:
| 23:8 And this verifies the existence of our kingdom at that time:

23:9 Այլ մեք զկարգն կանովնելով, առընթեր եւ զՄարաց թագաւորսն: ՄԱՐԱՑ ԱՌԱՋԻՆ:
| 23:9 But as we set out the order of the kings, we shall place beside it that of the kings of the Medes. The first of the Medes:

23:21 Առ սովաւ ասեն կեցեալ զՆաբուգոդոնոսոր արքայ Բաբելացւոց, որ գերեաց զՀրեայս:
| 23:21 In his time they say lived Nebuchadnezzar, king of the Babylonians, who took the Jews captive:
|
23:22 Եւ սորա ասեն զմի ի գլխաւորաց Եբրայեցւոցն գերելոց խնդրեալ ի Նաբուգոդոնոսորայ` Շամբաթ անուն, ածեալ բնակեցոյց յերկրիս մերում մեծաւ պատուով. եւ ի սմանէ ասէ պատմագիրն լինել զազգն Բագրատունեաց, եւ հաւաստի է:
| 23:22 And they say that he asked Nebuchadnezzar for one of the captive Hebrew leaders, Shambat by name, and brought and settled him in our country with great honor. From him the historian says that the Bagratuni family descends, and that is certain:

23:23 Բայց թէ ո՛րպիսի ջան եղեւ թագաւորացն մերոց` զնոսա ի պաշտաւն կռոցն խոնարհեցուցանել, եւ կամ թէ քանի՛ք եւ ո՛յք ոմանք ի նոցանէ որք աստուածպաշտութեամբ վճարեցին զկեանս՝ յետոյ պատմեսցուք ոճով:
| 23:23 But what efforts our kings made to constrain them to the worship of idols, how many of them, and who they were, who lost their lives for worshipping Gog, we shall later relate methodically:

23:24 Քանզի ասելն ոմանց անհաւաստի մարդոց, ըստ յաւժարութեան եւ ոչ ըստ ճշմարտութեան, ի Հայկայ զթագադիր ազգդ Բագրատունեաց լինել:
| 23:24 For some unreliable men say, out of fancy and not according to the truth, that the coronant family of the Bagratuni descends from Hayk:

23:25 Վասն որոյ ասեմ. մի՛ այսպիսեաց յիմար բանից հաւանիր. զի եւ ոչ մի շաւիղ կամ ցուցումն գոյ նմանութեան յասացեալսդ` որ զարդարութիւն ակնարկէ. զի ի բայ բանից եւ անոճ իմն յաղագս Հայկայ եւ նմանեացն կակազէ:
| 23:25 Therefore I reply: “ Do not believe such foolish words, as there is no vestige or sign of probability in those stories that might indicate the truth. For they are disordered babblings of vain words concerning Hayk and his ilk:

23:26 Բայց ծանի՛ր, զի Սմբատդ անուն, զոր յաճախ Բագրատունիք ի վերայ պատանեաց կոչեն` ճշմարտութեամբ Շամբաթ է, ըստ նախնի իւրեանց խաւսիցն, որ է եբրայեցի:
| 23:26 But know that this name Smbat, which the Bagratunik’ often give to their children, is in truth Shambat’ in their original speech, that is, Hebrew:
