25:1 Յաղագս Տիգրանայ, թէ ո՛րպիսի ամենայնիւ:
| 25:1 Concerning Tigran, what sort of man he was in everything:

25:2 Բայց անցցուք այսուհետեւ որ ինչ յաղագս Տիգրանայ եւ որ ի նմանէ գործք:
| 25:2 But let us now pass on to discuss Tigran and his deeds:
|
25:3 Քանզի սա ամենեցունց թագաւորացն մերոց հարստագոյն եւ խոհեմագոյն, եւ արանցն այնոցիկ եւ ամենեցուն քաջ:
| 25:3 for he, of all our kings, was the most powerful and intelligent and the most valiant of these and of all others:

25:4 Որ եւ Կիւրոսի աջակցեալ, զՄարացն ի բաց բառնալով զիշխանութիւնն, եւ զՅոյնս ոչ սակաւ ժամանակս ընդ իւրեաւ նուաճեալ հնազանդէր:
| 25:4 He assisted Cyrus in overthrowing the dominion of the Medes, and he brought the Greeks into subjection to himself for no little time:

25:5 Եւ զսահմանս մերոյ բնակութեանս ընդարձակեալ՝ ի հինսն մեր հասուցանէր յեզերս ծայրից բնակութեան, եւ ամենեցունց որ առ իւրովքն էին ժամանակաւք՝ նախանձելի, եւ զկնեացս ըղձալի ինքն եւ ժամանակ իւր:
| 25:5 He extended the borders of our territory and established them at their extreme limits in antiquity. He was envied by all who lived in his time, while he and his epoch were admired by posterity:

25:6 Զի ո՞ ոք ի ճշմարիտ արանց, եւ որոց ի բարս արութեան եւ խոհականութեան սիրելութիւն կայցէ, սորա յիշատակաւքն ոչ զուարճասցի, եւ յորդորեսցի այսպիսի այր լինել:
| 25:6 Who among true men and those who appreciate deeds of valor and prudence would not be stirred by his memory and aspire to become such a man:

25:7 Արանց կացեալ գլուխ եւ արութիւն ցուցեալ` զազգս մեր բարձրացոյց, եւ զընդ լծով կացեալսս` լծադիրս եւ հարկապահանջս կացոյց բազմաց. մթերս ոսկւոյ եւ արծաթոյ եւ քարանց պատուականաց եւ զգեստուց եւ պէս պէս գունից եւ անկուածոց` արանց միանգամայն եւ կանանց` հասարակաց բազմացոյց. որովք տգեղագոյնքն իբրեւ զգեղաւորս երեւէին սքանչելիք, եւ գեղաւորքն ըստ ժամանակին առ հասարակ դիւցազնացեալք:
| 25:7 He was supreme among men and by showing his valor he glorified our nation. Those who had been under a yoke he put in a position to subject and demand tribute from many. He multiplied the stores of gold and silver and precious stones, of garments and brocades of various colors, both for men and women, with the help of which the ugly appeared as wonderful as the handsome, and the handsome were altogether deified at the time:

25:8 Հետեւակամարտքն ի վերայ ուսոց ձիոց բերեալք, եւ պարսաւորքն առ հասարակ դիպաղեղունք, եւ շերտաւորքն ի սուսեր եւ ի տէգ նիզակի վառեալք. մերկքն վահանաւք եւ զգեստուք երկաթեաւք պարածածկեալք:
| 25:8 The infantry was carried on the shoulders of horses; the slingers were all skilled archers; those with clubs were armed with swords and lances; the unarmed were entirely protected by shields and iron garments:

25:9 Որոց ի մի վայր հասելոց բաւական էր տեսիլն միայն, եւ որ ի նոցայն պահպանակաց եւ զինուց փայլմունք եւ շողիւնք՝ զթշնամիսն արտահալածել:
| 25:9 The mere sight of them assembled in one spot, with the shining rays of their armor and weapons, was sufficient to disperse the enemy:

25:10 Խաղաղութեան եւ շինութեան բերող, իւղով եւ մեղու զամենայն հասակ պարարեալ:
| 25:10 The bringer of peace and prosperity, he fattened everyone with oil and honey:

25:11 Զայս եւ որ այլ այսպիսիք բազումք, եբեր մերոյ աշխարհիս խարտեաշս այս եւ աղեբեկ ծայրիւ հերաց Երուանդեանս Տիգրան, երեսաւք գունեան եւ մեղուակն, անձնեայն եւ թիկնաւէտն, առոգաբարձն եւ գեղեցկոտն, պարկեշտն ի կերակուրս եւ յըմպելիս, եւ ի խրախճանութիւնս աւրինաւոր. զորմէ ասէին ի հինսն մեր, որք փանդռամբն երգէին, լինել սմա եւ ի ցանկութիւնս մարմնոյ չափաւոր, մեծիմաստ եւ պերճաբան, եւ յամենայն որ ինչ մարդկութեան` պիտանի:
| 25:11 These and many others like them were the benefits brought to our country by Tigran, son of Eruand. He was blond with grey- flecked hair, of ruddy complexion and gentle eyed, personable and broad shouldered, strong legged and with noble feet, continent in eating and drinking and orderly at feasts, and - as those among our ancients who sang to the lyre used to say - moderate in the pleasures of the flesh; he was wise and eloquent and eminent in everything that pertains to mankind:

25:12 Եւ զի՞նչ ինձ ի գիրսս յայսոսիկ արդեաւք իցէ բան սիրելի, քան թէ որ յաղագս սորա էին գովեստք եւ պատմութիւնք յերկարել:
| 25:12 What then could be dearer to me in this book than to repeat his praises and the stories about him:

25:13 Արդարադատ եւ հաւասարասէր կշիռս ունելով յամենայնի` զամենայն ուրուք զկենցաղ` մտացն լծակաւ կշռէր:
| 25:13 He was just and equal in every judgment, and he weighed all the circumstances of each case impartially:

25:14 Ո՛չ ընդ լաւագոյնսն խանդայր, եւ ոչ զնուաստսն արհամարհէր, այլ ամենեցուն հասարակաց հնարէր զխնամոցն իւրոց ի վերայ տարածանել զգեստս:
| 25:14 He did not envy the noble nor did he despise the humble, but over all alike he spread the mantle of his care:

25:15 Սա նախ յառաջագոյն դաշնաւոր եղեալ Աժդահակայ, որ ի Մարաց էր, տայ նմա զքոյր իւր Տիգրանուհի կնութեան, ընձիւք խնդրելով զնա Աժդահակայ:
| 25:15 At first, he was allied with Azhdahak, who was a Mede, and gave him his sister Tigranuhi in marriage after Azhdahak had sought her with insistence:

25:16 Քանզի ասէր. կա՛մ ի ձեռն այսպիսւոյ մերձաւորութեան սէր հաստատուն առ Տիգրան ունել, կամ դիւրաւ այսպէս դաւաճանել զնա ի սպանումն:
| 25:16 For the latter said: “ Through such a relationship either I shall have a firm friendship with Tigran, or in this way I shall easily lure him to assassination:

25:17 Զի էր նմա խէթ կամաց իւրոց, մարգարէութիւն իմն յոչ կամաց լեալ նմա առաջիկայ դիպուածն իւր:
| 25:17 For he Tigran was an object of suspicion to him since an unexpected prophecy had revealed to him his future destiny:
