29:1 Դարձ Աբգարու յարեւելից, եւ տալ աւգնականութիւն Արետայ ի մարտ ընդ Հերովդի չորրորդապետի:
| 29:1 Abgar’s return from the east; he gives help to Aretas in the struggle against the Tetrarch Herod:

29:2 Իբրեւ դարձաւ Աբգար յարեւելից` լուաւ նա զՀռոմայեցւոց, թէ ի կասկածանս անկեալ են վասն նորա, որպէս թէ զկնի զաւրու գնաց յարեւելս:
| 29:2 When Abgar returned from the east, he heard that the Romans had suspicions concerning him to the effect that he had gone to the east to seek an army:

29:3 Վասն որոյ գրեաց առ գործակալս Հռոմայեցւոց զպատճառս երթալոյն իւրոյ ի Պարսս, միանգամայն եւ զգիր ուխտին, որ ընդ Արտաշէս եւ ընդ եղբարս նորա` տայ տանել:
| 29:3 Therefore he wrote to the Roman procurators the reasons for his going to Persia and at the same time had brought to them the text of the covenant between Artashēs and his brothers:

29:4 Եւ նոքա ոչ հաւատացին նմա. վասն զի եւ թշնամիք չարախաւսէին զնմանէ, Պիղատոս եւ Հերովդէս չորրորդապետ Լիւսանիա եւ Փիլիպպոս:
| 29:4 But they did not believe him because enemies were calumniating him - Pilate and Tetrarch Herod and Lysanias and Philip:

29:5 Իսկ Աբգարու եկեալ ի քաղաքն իւր յԵդեսիայ` միաբանեաց ընդ Արետայ արքայի Պատրիացւոց, սատարս տալով նմա ի ձեռն Խոսրանայ ուրումն Արծրունւոյ` մարտնչել ընդ Հերովդի:
| 29:5 So Abgar went to his city Edessa and joined forces with Aretas, king of Petra, giving him support through Khosran, an Artsruni, for the struggle against Herod:

29:6 Քանզի նախ զդուստրն Արետայ արքայի կին առեալ Հերովդի, եւ ապա անարգեալ ի բաց եթող, եւ զՀերովդիադայ մեկնեալ յառնէ իւրմէ եհան կենդանւոյն, յաղագս որոյ ստէպ յանդիմանեալ ի Յովհաննէ Մկրտչէ` այնր աղագաւ եսպան զՅովհաննէս Մկրտիչ:
| 29:6 For Herod had first taken King Aretas’ daughter to wife; having then dishonored and rejected her, he abducted Herodias from her husband in his lifetime. For this he was repeatedly blamed by John the Baptist, and therefore he put John the Baptist to death:

29:7 Եւ եղեւ պատերազմ ընդ նա եւ ընդ Արետ վասն անարգանաց դստերն. յորում սաստկապէս հարեալ սատակեցան զաւրքն Հերովդի յաւգնականութենէ քաջացն Հայոց, որպէս յաստուածային իմն տեսչութենէ, վրէժս հատուցանել ընդ մահուանն Յովհաննու Մկրտչին:
| 29:7 And there was war between him and Aretas over his daughter’s repudiation, in which Herod’s army was severely beaten and destroyed with the help of the brave Armenians, as by divine providence to avenge the death of John the Baptist:
