1:1 Աւարտաբանութիւն մերոց հայրենեաց: Ո՛չ հնախաւսութիւնք եղեալ մերոյ աշխարհիս, եւ ոչ ընդ ամենայն յունականսն անցանել ատակեալ սակս կարճութեան ժամանակին. նա եւ ոչ մատենագրութիւնք Դիոդորի հուպ առ մեզ են, զի ի նմա պահելով զակն` անմոռաց անցանէաք ընդ բնաւն, զի մի՛ ինչ ի մէնջ մնասցէ ի գլխաւորացն եւ ի պիտանեացն, եւ արժանի յիշատակի մերոց շարագրութեանց:
| 1:1 The Conclusion of the History of Our Fatherland: THERE is no study of the antiquity’ of our land, nor can we go through all that of the Greeks owing to the lack of time. Likewise, the works of Diodore are not available to us, so that by casting an eye on them we could discuss everything without forgetting anything that is important or significant and worthy of being recorded in our account:
| 1:2 Այլ որչափ ջան եւ յիշողութիւնք բաւեցին` պատմեցաք ստուգապէս ի մեծէն Աղեքսանդրէ մինչեւ ի վախճան սրբոյն Տրդատայ, յոյժ կանուխ եւ հեռի ժամանակաւք:
| 1:2 But as far as our ability and the records permit, we have given a faithful account of events from Alexander the Great down to the death of Saint Trdat, dealing with very early and far- off times:
| 1:3 Վասն որոյ մի՛ զմեզ այպանեալ պարսաւեսցես. զի ահա որ ինչ առ մերով ժամանակաւս եղեալ կամ դոյզն ինչ հեռի` զրուցեցից քեզ անսխալ, Երրորդ առնելով Գիրս, որ ինչ յետ սրբոյն Տրդատայ մինչեւ ի սպառել Արշակունեաց ազգին ի թագաւորութենէ, եւ զաւակի սրբոյն Գրիգորի ի քահանայապետութենէ. հասարակաց խաւսիւք անցանելով ընդ պատմութիւնս, որպէս զի մի՛ ոք երեւեսցի ի պերճաբանութիւնս գրաւեալ առ փափագն, այլ ճշմարտութեան բանից մերոց կարաւտեալ` ստէպ ստէպ եւ անյագ առնիցեն զընթերցումն պատմութեանց մերոց հայրենեաց:
| 1:3 Therefore do not censure or blame us, for behold we shall tell you without error about whatever happened in our own times, or a little earlier, by composing a third book dealing with events after Saint Trdat down to the removal of the Arsacid family from the throne and of the posterity of Saint Gregory from the patriarchate. We shall deal with this history in simple terms so that no one may seem attracted to it because of its rhetoric, but rather that desiring truth in our account, people may read very carefully and avidly the history of our fatherland:
