18:1 Յաղագս թագաւորեցուցանելոյ Շապհոյ զԱրշակ, եւ արշաւանաց ի Յոյնս:
| 18:1 Concerning Shapuh’s making Arshak king, and his raid into Greece:

18:2 Բայց Շապուհ թագաւորեցոյց փոխանակ Տիրանայ զորդի նորա զԱրշակ, ակն ածելով ի զաւրացն Հայոց, զի մի՛ խափան ինչ առաջի արկելոց իւրոց գործոցն լինիցին. այսպիսի իմն պատեհ համարեալ, բարերարութիւն առնելով` իւր հաստատել զաշխարհս. նուաճեաց եւ զազգս նախարարացն, պատանդս առնելով յամենեցունց:
| 18:2 In Tiran’s place Shapuh made his, Tiran’s son Arshak king. Fearful that the Armenian army might put an obstacle in the way of his plans, he, Shapuh thought it appropriate by acting benevolently to secure the land for himself. He also subjected the order of princes by taking hostages from them all:

18:3 Եւ փոխանակ Վահանայ Ամատունւոյ սպարապետ կացուցեալ Հայոց արեւելեայ զաւրուն` զհաւատարիմ իւր զՎաղինակ Սիւնի, եւ նմա յանձն արարեալ զՀայս` ինքն զհետ յունական զաւրուն կրթէր, եւ հասեալ ի Բիւթանիա, եւ նստէր ամիսս յոլովս:
| 18:3 In place of Vahan Amatuni he appointed as commander of the Armenian eastern army his friend Valinak of Siunik’, and entrusting Armenia to him, he himself pursued the Greek army. Arriving in Bithynia he camped there for many months, unable to do anything:

18:4 Եւ ոչ ինչ կարացեալ առնել` սիւն առ ծովուն կանգնէ, եւ առիւծ ի վերայ դնէ, մատեան ընդ ոտիւքն ունելով, որ նշանակէ այսպիսի ինչ. քանզի առիւծ հզաւր է ի գազանս, նոյնպէս եւ պարսկականն ի թագաւորս. եւ մատեան ժողովիչ է իմաստութեան, որպէս Հռոմայեցւոց տէրութիւնն:
| 18:4 By the sea he set up a column and placed a lion on top with a book under its feet. This signified that just as the lion is the most powerful of animals, so too is the Persian king among kings; and the book contains wisdom, as does the Roman empire:
