21:1 Սպանումն Տրդատայ, եղբաւրն Արշակայ, եւ երթալ սրբոյն Ներսիսի ի Բիւզանդիոն, եւ դարձուցանել զպատանդսն:
| 21:1 The murder of Trdat, Arshak’s brother, the journey of Saint Nersēs to Byzantium, and his return of the hostages:

21:2 Սաստիկ եւ յոյժ ահաւոր էր ի վերայ անիրաւաց Վաղենտիանոս. ուստի եւ զբազում իշխանս վասն յափշտակութեան սատակեաց, եւ զՌոդանոս ոմն ներքինապետ այրեաց կենդանւոյն. քանզի երիցս հրամայեաց, եւ ոչ դարձոյց զյափշտակութիւն ընչից կնոջ միոյ այրւոյ:
| 21:2 Valentinian was strict and very terrible against the lawless. So, he slaughtered many nobles because of their banditry, and he burned alive a certain Rodanus, the majordomo; for three times he had commanded, but Rodanus had not restored to a widow the property he had seized from her:

21:3 Եւ ի նմին աւուր հասեալ այնց հրեշտակաց զորս ի Հայսն առաքեաց` ցասուցին զնա առաւել զրուցով խրոխտալոյն Արշակայ:
| 21:3 On the same day arrived those messengers whom he had sent to Armenia, and they increased his anger by the report of Arshak’s insult:

21:4 Եւ վասն զի ի ժամուն յայնմիկ առ ձեռն ունէր զբարկութիւն` հրամայեաց զՏրդատ եղբայր նորա, զհայր մանկանն Գնելոյ, սպանանել, եւ Թէոդոսի զաւրու ծանու ի վերայ Հայոց դիմել:
| 21:4 And because at that moment he was in a state of great anger he ordered that Trdat, his brother and father of the young Gnel, be put to death and that Theodosius should attack Armenia with a strong army:

21:5 Որոյ հասեալ ի սահմանս Հայոց զարհուրի Արշակ եւ առաքէ ընդ առաջ նորա զմեծն Ներսէս. եւ ի հաշտութիւն մաղթեալ` տայ լիով զխափանեալ հարկսն, եւ պայծառ պատարագաւք ընդ նմին իսկ արձակէ զմեծն Ներսէս:
| 21:5 When the latter had reached the borders of Armenia, Arshak was frightened and sent Nersēs the Great to meet him. Begging for reconciliation, he paid in full the tribute that had been withheld and despatched Nersēs the Great with splendid gifts:

21:6 Որոյ երթեալ եւ ի հանդարտութիւն զթագաւորն շրջեալ` մեծարի ի նոցանէ յոյժ. նա եւ զպատանդսն խնդրեալ առնու եւ դառնայ:
| 21:6 When he arrived, he persuaded the king to make peace and was greatly honored by them the royal court. He also received the hostages at his request and returned:

21:7 Եւ կոյս մի անուն Ողոմպիադայ, յազգէ կայսեր, կին ածէ Արշակայ:
| 21:7 And he brought as a wife for Arshak a maiden called Olympias from the imperial family:

21:8 Բայց կայսերն բարերարութիւն արարեալ մանկանն Գնելոյ, յաղագս զուր ի նոցանէ մահուանն Տրդատայ հաւր նորա, տայ նմա զպատիւ հիւպատոսութեան, եւ գանձս յոլովս:
| 21:8 The emperor did a kindness to the young Gnel because of their pointless murder of Trdat his father and gave him the honor of the con- sulate and many treasures:

21:9 Ընդ որ խանդացեալ Տիրիթ` խորհէր նմա չարիս հանապազ, սպասելով ի դիպող աւուր:
| 21:9 But Tirit’ became jealous of him and continually plotted evil against him, waiting for a suitable:
