| 25:1 The murder of Tirit’:

25:2 Իբրեւ եղեւ խաղաղութիւն Շապհոյ ի հիւսիսականաց ազգաց, եւ պարապ առեալ ի պատերազմացն` յայտնեաց զցասումն զոր ունէր առ Արշակ, վասն ոչ նմա, այլ կայսեր հարկելոյ զայնքան ամս:
| 25:2 When Shapuh had made peace with the northern nations and was free of war, he revealed the anger that he bore against Arshak for paying tribute not to him but to the emperor for so many years:

25:3 Սակս որոյ առաքէ առ նա Արշակ զՏիրիթ եւ զնորին սիրեցեալն Վարդան արժանի պատարագաւք` խնդրել զհաշտութիւն:
| 25:3 Therefore Arshak sent to him Tirit’ and the latter’s friend Vardan with worthy presents to request a reconciliation:

25:4 Բայց վասն զի քինախնդիր անցելոցն մարտից կամեցաւ լինել Շապուհ` ինքն ելանէ պատերազմել ընդ Յոյնս, որոյ աղագաւ խնդրէ զԱրշակ մեր թագաւոր հանդերձ ամենայն զաւրաւքն Հայոց ընդ իւր լինել:
| 25:4 But because Shapuh wished to avenge himself for the past battles, he set out to wage war against the Greeks, and for that reason asked our King Arshak to accompany him with the entire Armenian army:

25:5 Իսկ Արշակ ոչ կամեցաւ իւրովի երթալ, այլ բարուրս եդեալ` դոյզն գունդ առաքէ զկնի Շապհոյ:
| 25:5 However, Arshak did not wish to go in person, but alleging a pretext he sent a small force to follow Shapuh:

25:6 Եւ իւր բարկացեալ Տիրիթայ` ընկենու զնա ի պատուոյն, որպէս զի թէ ի նորա հրապուրանաց եղեւ այն, յաղագս ատելութեանն զոր ունէր առ Յոյնս:
| 25:6 In his anger at Tirit’ he deprived him of his rank, as if this had occurred at his instigation because of the hatred he had for the Greeks:

25:7 Եւ առաւել եւս գրգռէր զարքայ Վասակ զինակիր նորա, նախանձ պահելով ընդ եղբաւրն վասն աղջկան միոջ հարճի:
| 25:7 And Vasak, his squire, incited the king even more, being jealous of his brother over a young concubine:
|
25:8 Վասն որոյ նախատեաց զնոսա արքայ ամաւթալի բանիւք եւ կսկծեցուցանողաւք:
| 25:8 Therefore the king denounced them with shaming and stinging words:
|
25:9 Որոց ոչ կարացեալ այնպիսի վատթարութեան եւ պարսաւանաց տանել` դէմ եդեալ գնացին առ Շապուհ հատուած:
| 25:9 Unable to endure such insults and vituperation, they defected and went to Shapuh:

25:10 Ընդ որ առաւել եւս զայրագնեալ Արշակ` հրամայէ նոյն Վասակայ զհետ նոցա կրթել բազմաձեռն գնդաւ, զի ուր եւ հասցէ` սպանցէ զնոսա. զոր ոչ հեղգացաւ կատարել Վասակ, թէպէտ եւ եղբայր նորա էր Վարդան:
| 25:10 At this Arshak became even more furious, and ordered the same Vasak to pursue them with a numerous force and to kill them wherever he caught up with them. Which, without any delay, Vasak accomplished, although Vardan was his brother:

25:11 Եւ խնդրեցաւ անպարտ արիւնն Գնելայ յամբարշտէն Տիրիթայ ըստ անիծիցն Ներսիսի, եւ ի Վարդանայ, ի հարազատ եղբաւրէ իւրմէ մեռանել:
| 25:11 So was the innocent blood of Gnel avenged on the impious Tirit’ according to Nersēs’ curse and on Vardan who perished at the hands of his own blood brother:
