31:1 Կոտորել Արշակայ զնախարարսն, եւ յաղագս վարուց Խադայ եպիսկոպոսի:
| 31:1 Arshak’s massacre of the nobles, and concerning the life of the Bishop Khad:

31:2 Ի հեռանալ մեծին Ներսիսի` ստեաց Արշակ ամենայն ուխտիցն, զոր եդ ընդ նախարարսն, եւ խնդրեաց զքէն ձեռակերտին իւրոյ Արշակաւանու:
| 31:2 While Nersēs the Great was in exile Arshak violated all the pacts that he had made with the nobles and sought vengeance for his city of Arshakavan:

31:3 Եւ կոտորեաց զբազումս ի նախարարացն, մանաւանդ զազգն Կամսարականաց բառնայր ի միջոյ, չարակնելով ագահեալ յամուրն Արտագերս եւ ի քաղաք ոստանի նոցա Երուանդաշատ:
| 31:3 He massacred many of the nobles, especially exterminating the family of the Kamsarakan because he was envious of their fortress of Artagerk’ and their capital city of Eruandashat:

31:4 Եւ կոչեալ առ ինքն ի լքեալ արքունիսն Արմաւիր իբր զազգականս իւր, ի պատճառս պատուոյ մեծարանաց, միահաղոյն զարս եւ զկանայս հանդերձ մանկամբք հրամայեաց կոտորել:
| 31:4 Summoning them to his presence in his abandoned palace at Armavir as his relatives on the pretext of greatly honoring them, he ordered them all to be massacred, men, women and children:

31:5 Եւ ոչ ոք ի նոցանէ ապրեցաւ, բայց Սպանդարատ որդի Արշաւրի. քանզի ունէր կին Արշակունի, որ եւ բնակեցաւ ի նորին ժառանգութեան ի կողմանս Տարաւնոյ եւ Հաշտենից, իբր տրտունջ զհաւրեղբաւրէն իւրմէ եղեալ զՆերսեհէ. որոյ աղագաւ եւ ոչ ի կոտորման նոցա դիպեցաւ:
| 31:5 Not one of them escaped except Spandarat, the son of Arshavir, for he had an Arsacid wife and had settled in her hereditary lands in the regions of Tarawn and Hashteank’ on the grounds that he had a quarrel with his uncle Nerseh. For this reason, he was not present at their massacre:

31:6 Այլ լուեալ զբաւթն` հանդերձ որդւովքն Շաւարշաւ եւ Գազաւոնիւ եւ բոլոր ընտանեաւքն գնաց փախստական ի Յոյնս:
| 31:6 But when he heard the sad news, with his sons Shavarsh and Gazavon and his entire household he fled to the Greeks:

31:7 Բայց ի գնալն մեծին Ներսիսի ի Յոյնս` էր ձեռնադրեալ զսարկաւագն Խադ յեպիսկոպոսութիւն Բագրեւանդայ եւ Արշարունեաց, եւ հաւատաց ի նա զամենայն գործ վերակացութեան աշխարհիս մինչեւ ցժամանակ իւրոյ դարձին:
| 31:7 But Nersēs the Great on his departure for Greece had ordained his deacon Khad to the bishopric of Bagrevand and Arsharunik’ and has entrusted him with the entire task of over- seeing the country until the time of his own return:

31:8 Այս Խադ յամենայնի նմանել մեծին Ներսիսի, եւ առաւել եւս ի տեսչութիւն աղքատաց. որոյ եւ շտեմարանքն իսկ աղբերացան սքանչելապէս իբր առ Եղիայիւ եւ Եղիսէիւ. եւ ի յանդիմանել զարքայ` ահաւոր եւ սաստիկ էր եւ աներկիւղ:
| 31:8 This Khad in every way resembled Nersēs the Great and even surpassed him in his care for the poor. His barns were replenished miraculously as in the time of Elijah and Elisha, and when he reproached the king, he was awesome, stern, and fearless:

31:9 Եւ ոչ եղեւ ի նմա գամագիւտ սատանայ, բայց առ միոյ նուագի, զի էր պճնող առ հանդերձս եւ ձիասէր. զոր պարսաւեալ այպանէին փոխանակաբանեալ` որք ի նմանէ յանդիմանեալ լինէին:
| 31:9 With him Satan had no success save in a single respect, for he was fastidious in his dress and a lover of horses. For this he was blamed and mocked in return by those who were reproached by him:

31:10 Վասն որոյ թողեալ այնուհետեւ զպերճագոյն հանդերձսն, խարազնազգեստ եղեալ` իշով շրջէր մինչեւ ցաւր մահուան իւրոյ:
| 31:10 So he abandoned from then on, his ostentatious clothes; dressed in a hair shirt he traveled around on a donkey until the day of his death:
