49:1 Միապետել Հայոց Խոսրովայ, եւ ունել զաթոռ եպիսկոպոսապետութեանն մեծին Սահակայ:
| 49:1 Khosrov becomes the sole ruler of Armenia, and Sahak the Great gains the archepiscopal throne:

49:2 Իբրեւ տիրեաց Խոսրով ամենայն նախարարացն Հայոց, որում ցանկայրն` յղէ առ Արկադ եւ խնդրէ ի նմանէ հաւատալ յինքն զմասն Յունաց որ ի Հայս, զոր շէն կալեալ` հարկեսցեն նմա անսխալ, որպէս նորին գործակալաց:
| 49:2 When Khosrov had extended his sway over all the Armenian nobles, as he desired, he sent to Arcadius and asked him to entrust him with the Greek sector of Armenia, promising that he would keep it prosperous and they would pay tribute to him without fail as they had previously to his governors:

49:3 Եւ կասկածեալ Արկադեայ ի միաբանութենէ նախարարացն Հայոց, թէ միաբանութեամբ հանիցեն ի նմանէ եւ տացեն ի Պարսս զբաժինն զայն` կատարէ զխնդիրսն Խոսրովայ:
| 49:3 And since Arcadius was fearful of a coalition of the Armenian princes, which might remove that sector from him and give to the Persians, he fulfilled Khosrov’s requests:

49:4 Յետ այսր վախճանեալ եպիսկոպոսապետն Ասպուրակէս, ի տեղի նորա յաջորդէ Խոսրով զՍահակ որդի մեծին Ներսիսի, որդւոյ Աթանագենի, որդւոյ Յուսկան, որդւոյ Վրթանիսի, որդւոյ սրբոյն Գրիգորի:
| 49:4 After that Archbishop Aspurakēs died; to succeed him Khosrov appointed Sahak, son of Nersēs the Great, son of At’anagenēs, son of Yusik, son of Vrt’anēs, son of Saint Gregory:

49:5 Սա ամենայն առաքինութեամբ հարցն նմանեալ, աղաւթիցն մասամբ առաւելեաց:
| 49:5 He resembled his fathers in all virtue, and even surpassed them with regard to prayer:

49:6 Քանզի ստացաւ աշակերտս վաթսուն ըստ նմանութեան մայրաքաղաքացն սպուդէից, արք կրաւնաւորք, խարազնազգեստք, երկաթապատք, բոկագնացք, որք յար ընդ նմա շրջէին. որովք մշտնջենաւոր պաշտամամբ կատարէր զկանոնն, որպէս զայնս որք յանապատսն էին, ի հոգայր զաշխարհս, որպէս զայնս որք յաշխարհի են:
| 49:6 He had sixty pupils like the Spudaioi of the capital, monks who wore a hair shirt, a belt of iron, and no shoes, and who always accompanied him about. With them he fulfilled the canon in perpetual observance like those who dwell in the desert, and he cared for our country like those who are in the world:

49:7 Առ նա եկեալ Մեսրոպ յաղագս խնդրոյ նշանագրաց Հայոց` եգիտ զնա առաւել եւս փափագող այնմ. եւ յետ բազում ջանից եւ ոչ ինչ աւգտելոյ, դարձեալ յաղաւթս ապաւինեալ, յԱստուծոյ խնդրելով:
| 49:7 To him came Mesrop because of his search for Armenian letters, and he found him even more anxious for it. After many efforts and no success, they again resorted to prayer, beseeching God:

49:8 Եւ մեկնեալ ի միմեանց, գնաց Մեսրոպ ի դադարս իւր. եւ յանձն առեալ զխստամբերութիւն վարուց ճգնէին առաւել քան զառաւել:
| 49:8 They separated from each other, and Mesrop went to his hermitage, where they undertook a rigorous way of life and practiced ever more severe austerities:
