| 52:1 Concerning Daniel’s script:

52:2 Յայնմ ժամանակի հիւանդացեալ Արկադ, եւ շարժմանց ահագնից եւ հրկիզութեանց եղեալ ի Բիւզանդիոն, որ յաղագս մեծին Յովհաննու` շփոթեալ լինէր թագաւորութիւնն Յունաց. եւ զաւրքն ընդ միմեանս պատերազմէին եւ ընդ Պարսս:
| 52:2 At that time Arcadius fell ill and terrible earthquakes and fires occurred in Byzantium on account of John the Great. The Greek empire was in turmoil and their armies fought each other, as well as the Persians:

52:3 Վասն որոյ Վռամ հրամայեաց Վռամշապհոյ մերում թագաւորի իջանել ի Միջագետս, զի խաղաղացուցեալ կարգեսցէ զնոսա, եւ համար երկաքանչիւրոցն հատցէ գործակալացն:
| 52:3 Therefore Vṙam ordered our King Vṙamshapuh to go down to Mesopotamia to pacify and organize it and make a reckoning of the governors of both sides:

52:4 Եւ իջեալ նորա ի կարգել զայս ամենայն` ոչ փոքր ինչ կրէր աշխատութիւն յաղագս քարտուղարի. զի մինչ գնաց Մեսրոպ յարքունական դրանէն` ոչ զոք ի ճարտարաց գտանէր անդ ի դպրաց, քանզի պարսկականաւն վարէին գրով:
| 52:4 He went down to arrange all this, enduring no little trouble in the matter of a secretary, for after Mesrop had left the royal court he could find no skilled scribe there, since they used the Persian script:

52:5 Վասն որոյ մատուցեալ առ արքայն քահանայի ուրումն Հաբէլ անուն կոչեցեալ, խոստանայր հայկականացս լեզուաց առնել նշանագիր, յարմարեալ ի Դանիելէ եպիսկոպոսէ, յիւրմէ մերձաւորէ:
| 52:5 So a certain priest named Habel approached the king and promised to adapt for the Armenian language a script that had been fashioned by the bishop Daniel, a relative of his:

52:6 Զորով անփոյթ արարեալ արքայի, եւ ելեալ ի Հայս` գտանէ ժողովեալ առ մեծն Սահակ եւ Մեսրոպ զամենայն եպիսկոպոսունս, հոգալ զգիւտ դպրութեան Հայոց, զոր զգացուցին արքային. եւ նա պատմեաց նոցա զասացեալսն վանականին:
| 52:6 But the king paid no heed to this and returned to Armenia, where he found all the bishops gathered in the company of Sahak the Great and Mesrop to take measures for the invention of Armenian letters. When they informed the king of this, he told them what the monk had said:

52:7 Զոր իբրեւ լուան` թախանձէին զնա փոյթ զայնպիսեացն առնել պիտոյից:
| 52:7 On hearing this they pressed him to take urgent steps in such a necessary matter:

52:8 Վասն որոյ առաքեաց հրեշտակութեամբ զայր մի պատուական յաշխարհիս եւ հաւատարիմ իւր, Խադունի ազգաւ, Վահրիճ անուն, յոյժ փափագող նորին գործոյ, առ Հաբէլն այն:
| 52:8 Therefore he sent a man honored in our land and faithful to himself of the Khaduni family, Vahrich by name, who was very enthusiastic for this matter, as a messenger to Habel:

52:9 Զոր առեալ, եւ երթեալ նովաւ հանդերձ քաջ հմտացեալ ի Դանիելէ, կարգեալ ըստ ձեւոյ աւրինակի յունականին զվաղնջուցն գրեալ շարագիր տառից` եկեալ ետուն ցմեծն Սահակ եւ Մեսրոպ:
| 52:9 Taking Habel with him he went to Daniel; having been well instructed by Daniel and having arranged in the Greek order the alphabet of letters that had been written down long before, they returned and gave it to Sahak the Great and Mesrop:

52:10 Որոց ուսեալ, եւ թեւածելով ընդ նոսա տղայոց զամս սակաւս, տեղեկացեալ գիտացին` ոչ լինել բաւական այնու նշանագրաւք ստոյգ հոլովել զհեգենայ բառից հայկականաց հագներգաբար, մուրացածոյիւն այնուիկ գծագրութեամբ:
| 52:10 After they had studied them and had set a few young pupils to them, they realized that it was not possible through these letters to render accurately the syllables of Armenian words in a satisfactory way because the script was a foreign one:
