17:1 Ապա յետ այսր զեկուցաւ նմա վասն Գուրգինի տիրելն Անձաւացեաց. եւ Աշոտ զօրու ծանու եկն եմուտ յերկիրն Անձաւացեաց, բանակեցաւ ի Բլրակին գեաւղջն Անձաւացեաց. յղէ առ Գուրգէն զՎահան Արծրունի եւ զվանաց երէցն Թէոդորոս զգլխաւորն Հոգեաց վանից, ասէ. «ես եկի խաղաղութեամբ յարքունուստ հրամանէ, եւ ոչ նման քեզ զապստամբութիւն ի գործ արկեալ:
| 17:1 After this, when he heard of Gurgēn’s ruling over Andzavats’ik’, Ashot entered the land of Andzavats’ik’ with a large force and encamped in the village of Blrakan. He despatched to Gurgēn Vahan Artsruni and the priest T’eodoros, abbot of Hogeats’ Vank’, with this message: “ I have come in peace at an order from court and not, like you, to engage in rebellion:

17:2 արդ թողացո զերկրորդ մասն Անձաւացեաց որդւոյ իմոյ Դերանկիդ, եւ այլ մի յաւելուր ընդ հակառակս ինչ ձեռն ի գործ արկանել, ապա թէ ոչ ի կամս կամաց զայդ առնես՝ ակամայութիւն ի վերայ հասեալ՝ եւ զոր ունիսդ հարկաւորաբար առնէ քեզ զայդ եւս թողուլ:
| 17:2 So give over half of Andzavats’ik’ to my son Derenik, and do not continue to act in opposition. Unless you do this willingly, he will bring constraint to bear, and by force will make you abandon what you do hold:

17:3 Եւ Գուրգէն հեզաբար արտաքոյ ամբարտաւանութեան առնէ նմա պատասխանիս, ասէ. «ի հայրենեացն արտաքս հանեալ էք ի ժառանգութենէ եւ մերժեալ ի բաժնէ եղբայրական հասէ. զա՞յս եւս բռնազբօսել ջանայք, զոր Աստուած ժառանգեցոյց ինձ:
| 17:3 Gurgēn modestly and without pride answered him: “ You have deprived me of [my] ancestral inheritance and expelled [me] from [my] fraternal portion. Are you attempting to seize by force this [heritage] also which God bequeathed to me:

17:4 Միթէ դո՞ւ միայն բնակելոց ես յերկրի:
| 17:4 Are you to be the only inhabitant on earth:

17:5 Տեսցէ տէր եւ դատ արասցէ եւ հանցէ իրաւունս ինձ, որպէս սովոր է արդար դատաւորն:
| 17:5 The Lord will see, will judge and give me my rights, as a righteous judge is wont to do:

17:6 Եւ ինքն զԳրիգոր եղբօրորդի իւր հանդերձ ընտրելովք ոմամբք զօրաւորօք վառեալ ի զէն եւ յասպազէն արք [Մ], զոր զգացուցին Աշոտի. եւ նա արհամարհեալ յոչինչ համարեալ զզեկուցմանն, զամբարտաւանս բարբառեալ. եւ յանկարծակի ի մէջ գիշերին Գրիգոր ախոյեանարձակ դիմեալ շուրջանակի փակեցին ի ներքս զբանակս, սրով եւ աղեղամբ վէրս մահաբերս ի վերայ եդեալ՝ յոլովք անկան ի զօրուէն. եւ ինքն Աշոտ ճողոպրեալ միաձի ելեալ եհաս փախստեայ մինչ յոստանն Ռշտունեաց, թողլով զբուն բանակն ի նմին տեղւոջ:
| 17:6 He provided Grigor his nephew and some elite soldiers with arms and horse armour, two hundred men. When informed about this, Ashot despised as insignificant the report and uttered haughty words. But suddenly, in the middle of the night, Grigor made a heroic attack; they surrounded [Ashot’s] camp, dealing mortal wounds with sword and bow so that very many of his army fell. Ashot himself escaped alone on horseback, and fled as far as the capital of Ṙshtunik’, abandoning his camp:

17:7 եւ այլքն ցրուեցան յո՛վ եւ աճապարեաց ոք. եւ ընդ այգն ընդ առաւօտն առին յաւարի զբանակն հանդերձ ախիւն եւ զտունս գանձուցն զորս առ ինքեանց:
| 17:7 The others were scattered wherever they could escape. In the morning at dawn they plundered the camp with its baggage and the stores of treasure, which they took for themselves:

17:8 Բայց իշխանն Դերենիկ անգիտացեալ զեղեալսն՝ ի նմին աւուր եկն բազմաձեռն զօրու բանակեցաւ ի հարաւ կողմն բերդին, եւ իբրեւ զեկուցաւ մնա եղեալքն՝ դարձաւ անդրէն գնաց յիւր ճանապարհ:
| 17:8 However, Prince Derenik, unaware of what had happened, on that same day came with a numerous force and encamped on the southern side of the castle. When he was informed of what had occurred, he turned back and went his own way:

17:9 Եւ դարձեալ գումարեալ հեծեալս [Ը], զՍահակ Բագրատունի զորդի իշխանաց իշխանի եւ զՍմբատ եւ զՇապուհ եւ զՄուշեղ Մոկաց իշխեցողք եւ զԱրզնոյ զօրսն, եւ եկեալ կացին մօտ առ Կանգուար բերդ, եւ պատերազմեալ զամիսս [Բ]՝ ոչ ինչ գործ ի գլուխ եղեալ ըստ ախորժման. ապա համոզեալ Սահակայ եւ Սմբատայ այլովքն եւս՝ բարձին ի միջոյ զաղմուկն, եւ սէր բարեկամութեան ի մէջ երկոցունց հաստատեալ՝ գնացին յիւրաքանչիւր տեղիս:
| 17:9 Then he gathered eight thousand mounted men [including] Sahak Bagratuni, son of the prince of princes, and Smbat, Shapuh, and Musheł the ruler of Mokk’, and the troops of Arzn. They approached the castle of Kanguar; but although they waged war for two months, they were unable to accomplish what they wanted. Then Sahak and Smbat with the others were appeased and withdrew from the conflict; friendly love was established between the two parties, and they went each to his own land:

17:10 Եւ Գուրգէն եւ Աշոտ առանձին միմեանց պատահեալ ետուն ողջոյն միմեանց եւ ուխտեցին ուխտ խաղաղութեան մինչեւ ցայսօր ժամանակի:
| 17:10 Gurgēn and Ashot met each other, exchanged greetings, and made a peace treaty [which has lasted] up to the present day:
