| 19:0 Concerning the offspring of Derenik:

19:1 Իսկ Դերանիկն առաւելոյր եւ առատանայր օր ըստ օրէ առ շինութիւն եւ խաղաղութիւն աշխարհիս, շինել եւ տածել եւ խնամել զաշխարհս:
| 19:1 Now Derenik daily increased and improved the prosperity and peace of the country, building, maintaining, administering:

19:2 Եւ դադարումն լինէր յաւուրս սորա հինից եւ ասպատակաց ի վերայ երկրիս, եւ քաջավայելչապէս բարեձեւանայր կարգք սրբոյ եկեղեցւոյ Քրիստոսի, եւ երկիւղ եւ կասկած եւ ոչ ուստեք:
| 19:2 In his days there was a respite from brigands and marauders across the land; the rites of the holy church of Christ were splendidly and properly performed; there was no fear or suspicion anywhere. He begat three sons:

19:3 Եւ ծնան նորա երիս որդիս, Սարգիս որ եւ Աշոտ՝ [ՅԻԶ] թուականութեանն Հայոց, Խաչիկ որ եւ Գագիկ [ՅԻԸ], եւ Գուրգէն, մանկունք կայտառք եւ գեղապանծք եւ բարենշանք եւ ամենեցուն ցանկալիք. ծնաւ եւ երկուս դստերս:
| 19:3 Sargis, also [known as] Ashot, in [326] of the Armenian era; Khachik, also [known as] Gagik, in [328]; and Gurgēn— lively children, charming, fortunate, and loved by all. He also begat two daughters:

19:4 Ընդ այն ժամանակս տէր Զաքարիայ հանգեաւ ի Քրիստոս, կեցեալ ի հայրապետութեանն Հայոց ամս [ԺԸ], եւ յաջորդէ փոխանակ նորա տէր Գէորգ:
| 19:4 In those times Lord Zak’aria fell asleep in Christ, having occupied the patriarchate for eighteen years. He was succeeded by Lord Gēorg:

19:5 Բայց որդին Շեհայ ի մտանելն ի Պարտաւ՝ եթող անդ քաղաքապետ զմի ի հաւատարմաց իւրոց Յամանիկ ոմն:
| 19:5 Now when the son of Sheh entered Partaw, he left there as governor of the city one of his trusted men, a certain Yamanik:

19:6 Նորա ի բաց կացեալ ի հնազանդութենէ իւրոյ պետականին հանդերձ քաղաքային գլխաւորօքն. եւ Յիսէ տուեալ պատերազմ ընդ քաղաքին, զտարի մի հանդերձ ամենայն նախարարօքն Հայոց, անգամագիտ լինելով՝ դառնայ յԱսորիս. եւ այս եղեւ երկիցս անգամ:
| 19:6 But he withdrew from obedience to his chief with the leaders of the city. So Yisē waged war against the city for a year in concert with all the princes of Armenia. But being unsuccessful, he returned to Syria. This happened twice:

19:7 Իսկ Յամանիկն ի վերայ Հայոց խորհէր ելանել, կամելով եւ տիրել Հայոց. զորոյ ձախողակի իմացմունս ծանուցեալ իշխանացն Հայոց՝ միով հաւանութեամբ գրեն յարքունիս եւ խնդրեն զԱհմաթ որդի Հալթի. զի Յամանիկն թուղթս եւ դեսպանս մի զմիոյ կնի առնելով առ իշխանս աշխարհիս՝ զինքն յառաջանալ ի վերակացութիւն Հայոց, քող արկեալ զդաւաճանող կեղծաւորութիւնն, զբարձումն բոլոր իշխանացն Հայոց, մանաւանդ զնախագահանստեալն զԱշոտ իշխանաց իշխան:
| 19:7 Then Yamanik planned to march against Armenia, intending to rule over it. When the Armenian princes came to know his sinister schemes, with one accord they wrote to the court and asked for Ahmet’ son of Halit’ [as governor]. For Yamanik was sending letters and messengers one after the other to the princes of the country, putting himself forward as governor of Armenia, veiling his treacherous deceit, [but planning] to remove all the princes of Armenia, especially the one in the highest rank, Ashot prince of princes:

19:8 Բայց խնդրոյն Հայոց զկատարումն առեալ յառաջնորդէն Տաճկաց՝ յղէ ի Հայս զառաջասացեալ զԱհմաթ որդի Հալթի:
| 19:8 However, the leader of the Muslims carried out the Armenians’ request, and sent to Armenia the above- mentioned Ahmat’ son of Halit’:

19:9 Եւ եղեւ ի մտանելն նորա ի Դատուան աւանն, զոր իւրեանց սեփհական համարէին ժառանգութիւն՝ ելեալ իշխանքն Հայոց յանձնիւր տեղեաց գնացին յանդիման լինել նմա, Դերանիկն, տէր Գագիկ եւ տէր Գրիգոր եւ միւս այլ տէր Գրիգոր Վասպուրական իշխան, Աշոտ կորապաղատ Հայոց իշխան, Մուշէղ իշխանն Մոկաց, Շապուհ եղբայր իշխանաց իշխանի եւ Ապլբառ Կայսիկ Ապահունեաց բռնաւորն եւ այլք ոմանք:
| 19:9 When he entered the town of Datuan, which they regarded as their own private inheritance, the Armenian princes went out to meet him from their own individual places: Derenik, Lord Gagik, and Lord Grigor, and another Lord Grigor prince of Vaspurakan, Ashot curopalates, prince of Armenia, Musheł prince of Mokk’, Shapuh brother of the prince of princes, Aplbar Kaysik ruler of Apahunik’, and various others:

19:10 Սոքա ամենեքեան վառեալք սպառազէն պատրաստութեամբ եւ բազմաձեռն առատալիր պատարագօք՝ գնացին, զի առեալ տարցեն մուծցեն զնա ի Դուին քաղաքն:
| 19:10 All were fully armed and accoutred, generously loaded with gifts, and went to escort him into the city of Dvin:

19:11 Բայց Յամանիկն եւ Ահմատն եւ Ապլբառն եւ այլ եւս Տաճկաց միաւորութեամբ զնոյն չարիս երկնէին գային:
| 19:11 But Yamanik and Ahmat’ and Aplbar, in concert with some more of the Muslims, came plotting the same wicked intentions:

19:12 Եւ գրեն թուղթ առ Յամանիկն, եթէ «ի մտանելն իմ ի Դուին քաղաք եւ զհարկս արքունի յիս գրաւել՝ եւ յանկասկած առեալ զիշխանս Հայոց՝ եւ եկեսցեն առ իս. դու դիմօք մարտի առ իս զօր գումարեա եւ ել ընդդէմ իմ ի պատերազմ, եւ ի միասին մխեցից զձեռս ի սոսա եւ բարձից զսոսա ի պետութենէ Հայոց:
| 19:12 They wrote a letter to Yamanik, saying: “ When I enter the city of Dvin and take control of the royal taxes, let the Armenian princes have no suspicion and come to me. Do you, on the pretext of war against me, gather an army and come out to do battle with me. Then together we shall lay hands on them and remove them from rule over Armenia:

19:13 Իսկ առաւելեալն իմաստութեամբ Աշոտ ոչ յանհոգս եւ յաներկիւղս կայր մնայր, այլ զգուշանալ հրամայէր ի խելս կամրջաց եւ յանապատս եւ ի կիրճս ձորոց:
| 19:13 However, with his superior wisdom Ashot did not remain unsolicitous or unconcerned, but he ordered the bridgeheads to be guarded and the desert places and passes of the valleys:

19:14 Ազդ լինէր յոմանց գրումն անյայտիցն, թէ «այս ոմանք այսորակ երիվարօք յայս նիշ նիւս կեղթում, ի մէջ բդեդի պահարանեալ նամակ տանին ընդ կողմն Ապահունեաց. արդ զգուշացիր ճանապարհիդ». որ եւ ըստ ազդեցութեան զկատարումն առնոյր գործն:
| 19:14 He was informed by various persons about the writing of secret [messages] to the effect that: “ Some people on horseback are riding to such and such a place, and have enclosed in the panniers in a package a letter, which they are taking in the direction of Apahunik’. So guard your road.” The affair turned out according to the warning:

19:15 Եւ կալեալ զդեսպանսն հանին զթուղթսն, եւ զարսն պահեցին ի զգուշութեան, ոչինչ ումեք զգուշացուցանելով որ ինչ եղեւն:
| 19:15 They arrested the messengers, took the letters, and kept the men under guard, letting no one know what had happened:
