24:1 Բայց Ապումրուան զԳագիկ որդի Դերանկին պահէր ընդարձակի, հանեալ ի կապանաց բանտին:
| 24:1 Apumruan kept Gagik, son of Derenik, unfettered, having extricated him from bonds and prison:

24:2 Նորա խորհեալ հաստատնագոյնս վասն Ապումրուանայ՝ քաջասրտագոյնս լինել ի սպանումն. եւ որք ի տանէն Ամատունեաց՝ Շապուհ եւ Վահան եւ Սարայ եղբարք միմեանց, Ապուսակր Վահունի եւ այլ ընդ նոսա, միաբանական խորհրդակցութեամբ խորհրդածեալ ընդ Գագկայ առ ի սպանումն Ապումրուանայ, որով առնիցեն ելանել ի կապանաց իշխանին Աշոտի եւ Գուրգինի, եւ դարձուցանել զիշխանութիւնն անդրէն առ իւրեանս. իսկ իբրեւ եկն Ապումրուան զհետ փախստէիցն ի Վանտոսպ զկնի թագաւորին՝ եւ խորհուրդն Գագկայ հաստատնագոյնք զկատարումն առին:
| 24:2 But the latter plotted [even] more assiduously to murder him courageously. Members of the house of the Amatunik’, Shapuh and Vahan and Saray, who were brothers, Apusakr Vahuni, and others conspired together with Gagik to murder Apumruan, whereby they might be able to release Prince Ashot and Gurgēn from bonds and win back their principality. So when Apumruan arrived at Vantosp with the fugitives after the king, they resolutely carried out Gagik’s plan:

24:3 Իբրեւ հեռացաւ թագաւորն զերկուց աւուրց ճանապարհ՝ Ապումրուան ելեալ ի ձիընթացիկ ասպարէզն զգնայր. եւ ազատացն յետուստ կողմանէ սուր ի գործ արկեալ սպանին զնա, եւ զգլուխ նորա հատեալ առ բերդայինսն յղէին:
| 24:3 When the king had gone away a distance of two days’ journey, Apumruan went out to go riding. The nobles struck him from behind with their swords and slew him; cutting off his head, they sent it to the garrison:

24:4 Եւ հանեալ զԱշոտ եւ զԳուրգէն ի կապանաց՝ տիրեցին զօրութեամբ մեծաւ իւրեանց բնիկ իշխանութեանն, եւ կէին յանհոգս յանկասկածս այնուհետեւ:
| 24:4 They freed Ashot and Gurgēn from imprisonment, and ruled over their native principality with great vigour, living thenceforth without worry or suspicion:

24:5 Եւ առեալ զմարմին նորա տիկնոջն Սեդայի կնոջն Աշոտի եւ եդ ի գերեզմանի, ի տեղւոջն որում Ձորոյ վանքն ասեն, ի վերայ գեաղջն Ահաւականից:
| 24:5 Princess Seday, Ashot’s wife, took the body and placed it in a tomb in the place called Dzoroy- vank’, above the village of Ahavakank’:

24:6 Եւ իբրեւ եհաս առ թագաւորն որ ինչ գործեցաւն՝ ոչինչ գոյր տեղի այլ պատասխանւոյ. բայց ասէ, «արժանապէս այն գործ նոյն գործեցաւ:
| 24:6 When news of what had been done reached the king, he made no other response save to say: “ That deed was done worthily:

24:7 Իբրեւ եհաս թագաւորն յաշխարհն իւր՝ ետ բերել պարգեւս եւ պատիւս Աշոտի ըստ իշխանական յօրինուածի, եւ զԳագիկ ձգեալ ի պատիւ զօրավարութեան Հայոց մեծաց, ըստ օրինի թագաւորացն Յունաց՝ տալ առաջի նորա նշանակս խաչադրօշս:
| 24:7 When the king arrived in his own lands, he had gifts and honours taken to Ashot in accordance with princely custom, raising Gagik to the dignity of general of Greater Armenia, to carry before him according to the custom of the Byzantine emperors banners inscribed with the cross:

24:8 Եւ Գուրգինի նորին եղբօրն զպատիւ մարզպանութեան գահակալութեան հաւատացեալ, ըստ կարգի բարձրաբերձութեան թագաւորացն Հայոց, մանաւանդ մեծին Տրդատայ թագաւորի:
| 24:8 He endowed Gurgēn his brother with the position of governor in accordance with the highest rank of the Armenian kings, especially of the great king Trdat:
