30:1 Եթէ ո՛րպէս յայտնեցաւ նենգութիւնն եւ գրգռեցաւ մարտն. յորում եւ մահն Աժդահակայ:
| 30:1 How his deceit was discovered and the war provoked, in which Azhdahak died:

30:2 Զկնի այսորիկ ասէ, թէ ի հաստատել Աժդահակայ զՏիգրանուհի ի տիկնութիւն, ոչ ինչ առանց կամաց նորա ի թագաւորութեան իւրում գործէր. այլ բերանով նորա կարգէր զամենայն, եւ հրամանի նորա ամենեցուն հնազանդ լինել հրամայէր:
| 30:2 After this he says that when Azhdahak had established Tigranuhi as queen he did nothing in his kingdom without her will; but at her word he regulated everything and ordered every- one to obey her command:

30:3 Եւ յաւրինեալ զայս այսպէս` սկսանի նմա մեղմով պատրանս մատուցանել. «Ոչ գիտես, ասէ, եթէ եղբայր քո Տիգրան խանդացաւ զտիկնութիւնդ քո ի վերայ Արեաց, ի կնոջէ իւրմէ ի Զարուհեայ գրգռեալ:
| 30:3 Having arranged everything in this manner, he gently began to proffer her deceitful words: “ Do you not know,” he said, “ that your brother Tigran, incited by his wife Zaruhi, is envious of your authority over the Aryans:

30:4 Եւ զի՞նչ լինիցի այն, եթէ ոչ նախ ինձ մեռանել, եւ ապա լինել զԶարուհի ի վերայ Արեաց եւ զաստուածուհեաց ունել զտեղի:
| 30:4 And what will become of this, save that first I shall die and then Zaruhi will reign over the Aryans and occupy the place of the goddesses:

30:5 Բայց արդ` ընտրելի է քեզ զմի յայսցանէ. կա՛մ լինել եղբայրասէր, եւ կործանումն խայտառակելի յանդիման Արեաց յանձն առնուլ, եւ կամ զանձին իմանալով զբարի` խորհուրդ աւգտակար ի մէջ բերել եւ յաղագս առաջիկայիցն հոգալ:
| 30:5 So you must choose one of these alternatives: either remain friendly with your brother and accept ignominious ruin in the eyes of the Aryans, or, realizing your own best interests, propose some useful advice and take heed for the present situation:

30:6 Բայց էր ի մէջ այսպիսւոյ խորամանկութեան թագուցեալ եւ զմեռանելն Տիգրանուհեայ, եթէ ոչ ինչ ըստ կամաց խորհիցի մարապարսացւոյն:
| 30:6 In this plot he hid the intended death of Tigranuhi if she did not make a proposal in accordance with the wishes of the Medo- Persian:

30:7 Այլ իմացեալ խորագիտոյ գեղեցկին զայսպիսի դաւաճանութիւն` պատասխանի առնէ սիրոյ բանս Աժդահակայ, եւ արագագոյն ի ձեռն մտերմաց պատմէ եղբաւրն զնենգութիւնն:
| 30:7 But the prudent and beautiful woman discerned this treachery; she replied to Azhdahak in loving words but swiftly informed her brother of the deceit through friends:

30:8 Եւ ձեռնարկէ այնուհետեւ ի գործն ի ձեռն պատգամաւորութեան, գալ նոցա ի տեսութիւն միաբանութեան ի տեղի միջոց սահմանաց երկոցունց թագաւորութեանցն. իբր բան ինչ եւ գործ հարկաւոր հասեալ, որ ի ձեռն գրոյ եւ հրեշտակութեան կատարել ոչ է կարողութիւն, եթէ ոչ եւ դէմք երկոցունց հանդէպ լինիցին:
| 30:8 Thenceforth Azhdahak set to work, suggesting to Tigran through an embassy that they should meet midway on the borders of their two realms for mutual discussions, as if some important matter or business had arisen that could not be treated by means of a letter or an exchange of messengers but only if the two met face to face:

30:9 Այլ գիտելով Տիգրանայ զառաքելոյ իրին կատարումն` ոչ ինչ յորոց խորհէրն Աժդահակ` ծածկէ, այլ ի ձեռն գրոյ յայտնէ որ ինչ ի նորայն խորութեան սրտի:
| 30:9 However, Tigran knew the purpose of the message and hid nothing of Azhdahak’s plot, but in a letter revealed what was in the depths of his heart:

30:10 Եւ յայտնեալ այսպիսւոյ չարութեան` ոչ ինչ էր այնուհետեւ բան եւ խորամանկութիւն, որ զայսպիսիս առագաստէր զչարութիւն. այլ յայտնի այնուհետեւ գրգռէր խազմն:
| 30:10 And once such baseness had been revealed there was thenceforth no excuse or deceit that could veil such wickedness, but then war broke out openly:
|
30:11 Եւ ժողովէ արքայն Հայոց ի սահմանացն Կապադովկացւոց, եւ որչափ ընտիրք Վրաց եւ Աղուանից, եւ զամենայն ընտիրս Հայոց Մեծաց եւ Փոքունց:
| 30:11 The Armenian king gathered troops from the confines of Cappadocia, the total elite of Georgia and Albania, and the elite of Greater and Lesser Armenia:

30:12 Եւ խաղայ ամենայն զաւրութեամբ իւրով զկողմամբք Մեդացւոց:
| 30:12 He marched with all his host to the borders of Media:
|
30:13 Վտանգ այնուհետեւ հարկ առնէ Աժդահակայ` պատահել պատերազմաւ հայկազինն ոչ փոքր ինչ ամբոխիւ:
| 30:13 The danger then forced Azhdahak to oppose the Armenian with no less a force:
|
30:14 Եւ երկայնէր հակառակութիւնն մինչեւ յամիսս հինգ. քանզի հիւանդանայր գործն արագ եւ առողջ, յորժամ զմտաւ ածէր Տիգրան յաղագս քեռն իւրոյ սիրելւոյ:
| 30:14 The struggle lasted for five full months, since swift and decisive action languished when Tigran thought of his beloved sister:

30:15 Զի այսպէս իմն զելս իրացն հնարէր յարդարել, զի ապրելոյ ճար լիցի Տիգրանուհեայ:
| 30:15 He made efforts to arrange the outcome of events so that Tigranuhi might have a means of escape:
|
30:16 Պատահէ եւ այս, եւ ժամ մարտին մերձենայ:
| 30:16 When this had been accomplished, the hours of combat approached:
|
30:17 Բայց գովեմ զքաջ նահատակն իմ զնիզակաւորն եւ զամենեւին բոլոր անդամովք համեմատն եւ ի գեղեցկութիւն հասակի աւարտեալ. քանզի առոյգ, ամենայնիւ ըստ իրեարս պատշաճեալ, եւ ուժով ոչ զոք ունելով իւր զոյգ:
| 30:17 So I praise my noble champion, the lancer well proportioned in all his limbs and perfect in the beauty of his frame, for he was vigorous and adept in everything, and in strength he had no equal:

30:18 Եւ զի՞ երկայնեմ զբանս. քանզի ի լինել մարտին նիզակաւ աւրինակ իմն որպէս զջուր հերձեալ զերկաթի ամուր հանդերձն` շամփրէ զԱժդահակ յընդարձակ տէգ նիզակին, եւ յամփոփել միւսանգամ զձեռնն՝ արտաքս զկէս մասն թոքոցն հանդերձ զինուն ի դուրս բերէ:
| 30:18 But why do I prolong my account? When the battle was joined, with his lance he split Azhdahak’s iron armor like water; the point of the lance ran right through him, and as he drew it back again, he brought out with his weapon half of his lungs:

30:19 Բայց մարտն էր սքանչելի. զի քաջք դիպեալ քաջաց` ոչ վաղվաղակի թիկունս ի միմեանց դարձուցանէին. վասն որոյ յերկարեալ քարշէր գործ պատերազմին մինչեւ ի ժամս ձիգս:
| 30:19 The combat was magnificent, for heroes were facing heroes, and not straightway did they turn their backs to each other. Therefore, the struggle was drawn out over long hours:

30:20 Իսկ վախճան գործոյն առնէր մահն Աժդահակայ. եւ այսպիսի դիպուածս ի բարեբախտութիւն յաւելեալ` փառս յաճախէր Տիգրանայ:
| 30:20 But the death of Azhdahak brought it to an end. And this feat, added to his good fortune, increased Tigran’s glory:
