| 9:1 The letter of Vaḷarshak, king of Armenia, to Arshak the Great, king of Persia:

9:2 Արշակ թագաւոր երկրի եւ ծովու, որոյ անձն եւ պատկեր եւ որպէս եւ է իսկ եւ մեր աստուածոց, իսկ բախտ եւ պատահումն ի վեր քան զամենայն թագաւորաց, եւ մտաց լայնութիւն` որչափ երկնի ի վերայ երկրի. Վաղարշակ կրտսեր եղբայր քո եւ նիզակակից, որ ի քէն կարգեալ արքայ Հայոց. Ողջ լեր ամենայն յաղթութեամբ:
| 9:2 To Arshak, king of earth and sea, whose person and image are as those of our gods, whose fortune and destiny are superior to those of all kings, and whose amplitude of mind is as that of the sky above the earth, from Vaḷarshak your younger brother and colleague, established by you as king of Armenia, may you flourish with perpetual victory:

9:3 Քանզի պատուէր ընկալայ ի քէն` քաջութեան եւ ամենայն իմաստութեան հոգ տանել` ոչ երբէք անփոյթ արարեալ զքոյովն անցի զխրատու, այլ խնամ տարեալ հոգացայ ամենայնի, որչափ միտք եւ հասողութիւն բաւեցին:
| 9:3 Because I received from you a command to cultivate valor and all wisdom, I have never neglected your advice but have been assiduous in everything so far as my mind and understanding were able:

9:4 Եւ այժմ ի քումմէ խնամակալութենէ զետեղեալ զթագաւորութիւնս` խորհուրդ ի մտի եդի գիտել, թէ ո՛յք ոմանք յառաջ քան զիս իցեն տիրեալ աշխարհիս Հայոց, եւ ուստի՛ նախարարութիւնքս որ աստ կան:
| 9:4 And now that my rule has been stabilized by your solicitude, I have decided to discover who may have been those who ruled over this land of Armenia before me and whence arose the principalities that now exist here:

9:5 Զի ո՛չ կարգք ինչ աստ լեալ յայտնի, եւ ոչ մեհենից պաշտամունք. եւ ո՛չ գլխաւորաց աշխարհիս առաջինն յայտնի է, եւ ոչ վերջինն, եւ ոչ այլ ինչ աւրինաւոր, այլ խառն ի խուռն ամենայն եւ վայրենի:
| 9:5 For the orders of rank here are quite uncertain, as are the cults for the temples. It is not clear which is the first of the lords of this country and which the last, nor is anything else regulated, but all is confused and uncivilized:

9:6 Վասն որոյ աղաչեմ զքո տէրութիւնդ, հրամայել բանալ զդիւանդ արքունի ընդդէմ առնդ եկելոյ առաջի քոյոյ հզաւր տէրութեանդ. զի գտեալ զըղձալին եղբաւր քոյ եւ որդւոյ` բերցէ փութապէս. եւ զմեր հեշտութիւն, որ ի կամակատարութենէ լեալ` քաջ գիտեմ խնդութիւն քեզ լեալ:
| 9:6 Therefore I beg your majesty to order the royal archives to be opened for this man who has appeared before your powerful majesty, that finding the information desired by your brother and son he may bring it with despatch. And the pleasure we shall derive from the fulfillment of our wishes I well know will be a source of delight for you:

9:7 Ողջ լեր երեւելիդ բնակութեամբ ի մէջ դից:
| 9:7 Greetings to you, made eminent by your sojourn among the gods:

9:8 Եւ ընկալեալ Արշակայ Մեծի զգիրն ի ձեռաց Մար Աբայն Կատինայ` մեծաւ լրջմտութեամբ հրամայէ առաջի առնել նմա զդիւանն արքունի որ ի Նինուէ, միանգամայն եւ ուրախացեալ ընդ այսպիսի միտս ունել եղբաւր իւրոյ, որում զկէս թագաւորութեան իւրոյ հաւատացեալ էր:
| 9:8 When Arshak the Great received the letter from the hands of Mar Abas Catina, with great alacrity he ordered the royal archives in Nineveh to be set before him, and he was equally happy that his brother, to whom he had entrusted half of his kingdom, had such thoughts:

9:9 Եւ խուզեալ նորա զամենայն մատեանսն` գտանէ մատեան մի հելլենացի գրով, յորոյ վերայ էր, ասէ, վերնագիր այսպիսի:
| 9:9 Mar Abas Catina examined all the books and found one in Greek on which there was, he says, the following caption:

9:10 ՍԿԻԶԲՆ ՄԱՏԵՆԻՆ: «Այս մատեան հրամանաւ Աղեքսանդրի ի Քաղդէացւոց բարբառոյ փոխեալ ի յոյն, որ ունի զբուն հնոցն եւ զնախնեացն բանս:
| 9:10 THE BEGINNING OF THE BOOK: “ This book, which contains the authentic account of the ancients and ancestors, was translated at the command of Alexander from the Chaldaean language into Greek:

9:11 Որոյ սկիզբն լեալ ասէ զԶրուանն եւ զՏիտանն եւ զՅապետոսթէ, յորում եւ զիւրաքանչիւր ոք ի ծննդոց երից նախարարականացս այսոցիկ արանց, զարս անուանիս, կարգաւ շարադասեալ յիւրաքանչիւր տեղիս մինչեւ ցբազում ամս:
| 9:11 The beginning of this book, he says, deals with Zrvan, Titan, and Yapetost’ē; and it contains each of the offspring of these three dynasts, famous men whom it sets in each one’s order and place over many years:

9:12 Յայսմ մատենէ Մար Աբաս Կատինայ զմերոյ ազգիս միայն հանեալ զպատմութիւն հաւատի` բերէ առ Վաղարշակ արքայ ի Մծբին յոյն եւ ասորի գրով:
| 9:12 From this book Mar Abas Catina extracted only the reliable history of our own race and brought it to King Vaḷarshak in Nisibis in both Greek and Syriac:

9:13 Զոր առեալ անձնագեղոյն եւ քաջաղեղանն արին Վաղարշակայ, կորովաբանոյն եւ հանճարեղի, առաջին իւրոյ գանձուն համարելով` դնէ յարքունիսն ի պահեստի մեծաւ զգուշութեամբ, եւ զմասն ինչ յարձանի հրամայէ դրոշմել:
| 9:13 The personable and valiant Vaḷarshak, expert at the bow, eloquent, and intelligent, received it and esteeming it as the foremost of his treasures placed it in the palace, in safekeeping, with great care; and a part of it he ordered to be inscribed on a stele:

9:14 Յորմէ մեր հաւաստի ի վերայ հասեալ կարգի զրուցացս` երկրորդեմք այժմ քում հարցասիրութեանդ, ձգելով զմեր բնիկ նախարարութիւնս մինչեւ ցՔաղդէացւոց Սարդանապաղղոս, եւ եւս մաւտագոյն:
| 9:14 Through this we are assured of the order of our tales and repeat them now for your curiosity, extending our ancestral principalities as far back as Sardanapal of the Chaldaeans and even farther:

9:15 Յորում է սկիզբն բանիցն այսպիսի:

9:16 Ահեղք եւ երեւելիք առաջինքն ի դից, եւ աշխարհի մեծամեծ բարեաց պատճառք, որ սկիզբն աշխարհի եւ բազմամարդութեան:
| 9:16 Fearsome and renowned were the first of the gods, and the cause of great blessings for the earth- the origin of the earth and of the multiplication of mankind:

9:17 Եւ ի սոցանէ հատեալ գտան ազգ սկայիցն, անհեդեդք, յաղթանդամք մարմնով եւ վիթխարիք. որք յղացեալ ամբարտաւանութեամբ` ծնան զամբարիշտ խորհուրդ աշտարակաշինութեանն, եւ ի նոյն լինէին ի գործ անկեալք. յոր հողմ ահագին իմն եւ աստուածային շնչեցեալ ի դիցն ցասմանէ` ցրէ զամբարտակն, եւ մարդկանն անլուր բարբառս իւրաքանչիւր ումեք բաշխեալ, աղմուկ շփոթի ի մէջ արկանէին:
| 9:17 From them branched off the race of giants, monstrous and enormous in force and size, who in their arrogance conceived and gave birth to the impious plan of building the tower. To that very task they had fallen when a fearful and divine wind, aroused by the anger of the gods, blew down and scattered the construction; they imparted mutually incomprehensible languages to men and brought upon them tumultuous confusion:

9:18 Յորոց մի էր եւ Յապետոսթեանն Հայկ, անուանի եւ քաջ նախարար, կորովաձիգ եւ հաստաղեղն:
| 9:18 One of these men was Hayk, descended from Yapetost’ē, the renowned and valiant prince, strong and accurate in drawing the bow:

9:19 Եւ այս կարգ զրուցաբանութեան դադարումն առցէ. զի հանդէս է մեր` ոչ զպատմութեանն ողջաբանութիւն գրել, այլ ջանալ ցուցանել զառաջինսն մեր եւ զբուն հին նախնիս:
| 9:19 The course of this account should stop here, for it is our proposal not to write a complete history but to attempt to indicate our first and original ancestors:

9:20 Արդ ի նոյն մատենէ սկսեալ ասացից. Յապետոսթէ, Մերոդ, Սիրաթ, Թակլադ. որ է Յաբեթ, Գոմեր, Թիրաս, Թորգոմ:

9:21 Յետ որոյ նոյն ժամանակագիր յառաջ մատուցեալ ասէ. Հայկ, Արամանեակ, եւ զայսն ի կարգի, զորոց յառաջագոյն ասացաք:
