28:1 Յաղագս երթալոյն Աբգարու յարեւելս եւ թագաւորեցուցանելոյ Պարսից զԱրտաշէս. եւ թէ զիա՛րդ կարգեաց զեղբարս իւր, յորոց մեր Լուսաւորիչն եւ նորին ազգակիցքն:
| 28:1 Concerning Abgar’s going to the east and making Artashēs king of Persia, how he brought order to his brothers, from whom are descended our Illuminator and his kin:

28:2 Երթեալ Աբգարու յարեւելս` գտանէ թագաւորեալ Պարսից զԱրտաշէս որդի Արշաւրի, եւ ընդդիմացեալ նմա զեղբարս իւր. քանզի նա խորհէր ազգաւ ի վերայ նոցա թագաւորել, եւ նոքա ոչ առնուին յանձն:
| 28:2 When Abgar went to the east, he found Artashēs, the son of Arshavir, reigning over the Persians and his brothers opposing him; for he planned to rule over them through his successors and they would not accept this:

28:3 Վասն որոյ պաշարեալ զնոսա Արտաշիսի եւ երկիւղ մահու եդեալ ի վերայ նոցա` բազում պատառմունք եւ անմիաբանութիւնք ի մէջ զաւրացն եւ այլոց ազգականացն լինէին:
| 28:3 So when Artashēs had applied pressure to them and had cast the fear of death upon them, there were many dissensions and discords among the troops and their other kin:

28:4 Քանզի էին Արշաւրի թագաւորի որդիք երեք եւ դուստր մի. առաջին` նոյն ինքն արքայն Արտաշէս, երկրորդն` Կարէն, երրորդն` Սուրէն, եւ քոյր նոցին` որ անուանեալ կոչի Կոշմ, կին զաւրավարին ամենայն Արեաց ի հաւրէն կարգեալ:
| 28:4 For King Arshavir had had three sons and a daughter: the first was this same king Artashēs himself, the second was Karen, and the third Suren, and their sister, who was called Koshm, was the wife of the general of all the Aryans who had been appointed by her father:

28:5 Իսկ Ագարու համոզեալ զնոսա խաղաղանալ, ի մէջ ամենեցուն հաստատէ զայս ինչ սահմանելով. թագաւորել Արտաշիսի հանդերձ ծննդովք իւրովք` որպէս եւ խորհեցաւն, եւ զեղբարսն անուանել Պահլաւս` յանուն քաղաքին իւրեանց եւ աշխարհին մեծի եւ քաջաբերոյ. որպէս զի լինել նոցա պատուականագոյն եւ առաջին քան զամենայն նախարարութիւնս Պարսից, որպէս արդարեւ զարմս թագաւորաց:
| 28:5 But Abgar persuaded them to make peace and established the following conditions on them all: Artashēs would reign with his descendants, as he had planned; his brothers would be called Pahlav from the name of their city and great and fertile land, so that they would be more honorable and take precedence over all other Persian nobility, as being truly offspring of kings:

28:6 Եւ դաշինս եւ երդմունս ի միջի հաստատեալ, զի թէ լիցի սպառել զարմից Արտաշիսի ի պատանեաց` նոքա մատիցեն ի թագաւորութիւնն:
| 28:6 He also established pacts and oaths between them that if the line of Artashēs should become extinct on the male side, they, his brothers would succeed to the throne:

28:7 Եւ արտաքոյ ցեղի նորա թագաւորեցելոյ` ցեղս որոշել զնոսա երիս, կոչմամբ այսպիսեաւ. Կարենի Պահլաւ, Սուրենի Պահլաւ, եւ զքոյրն` Ասպահապետի Պահլաւ, յառնն տանուտէրութենէ զանունն որոշեալ:
| 28:7 And outside his reigning line he distinguished them as three lines with the following titles: Karēn Pahlav, Suren Pahlav, and their sister, Aspahapet Pahlav, taking this name from the principality of her husband:

28:8 Եւ ասեն զսուրբն Գրիգոր ի Սուրենեանն Պահլաւէ, եւ զԿամսարականս ի Կարենեանն Պահլաւէ:
| 28:8 They say that Saint Gregory was descended from the line of Suren Pahlav and the Kamsarakan from Karēn Pahlav:

28:9 Այլ զայսր գալոյն զորպիսութիւն ի կարգին պատմեսցուք. միայն նշանակելով այժմ առ ընթեր Արտաշիսի, զի ծանիցես զազգս զայս մեծ, թէ հաւաստի արիւն Վաղարշակայ են, այս ինքն զարմ Արշակայ մեծի, եղբաւր Վաղարշակայ:
| 28:9 But we shall narrate the circumstances of their arrival in its place and merely mention them now next to Artashēs, so that you may know that this great family is indeed the blood of Vaḷarshak, that is, the line of Arshak the Great, brother of Vaḷarshak:

28:10 Եւ այսոցիկ այսպէս կարգելոց եւ զգիր ուխտին ընդ իւր առեալ Աբգարու` դառնայ ոչ առողջ մարմնով, այլ չարաչար ցաւովք ախտացեալ:
| 28:10 Having made these arrangements and taking the text of the covenant with him, Abgar returned, not in good health but afflicted by terrible pains:
