37:1 Թագաւորել Երուանդայ եւ կոտորել զորդիսն Սանատրկոյ, եւ զերծանել Արտաշիսի փախստեամբ:
| 37:1 The reign of Eruand, the slaughter of Sanatruk’s sons, and the escape of Artashēs by flight:

37:2 Յետ մահուանն Սանատրկոյ արքայի շփոթի իմն թագաւորութիւնն:
| 37:2 After King Sanatruk’s death the kingdom fell into confusion:

37:3 Քանզի Երուանդ ոմն, որդի կնոջ Արշակունւոյ, թագաւորէ յութերորդ ամի Դարեհի վերջնոյ:
| 37:3 for a certain Eruand, son of an Arsacid woman, gained the throne in the eighth year of the last Darius:

37:4 Եւ ունին զրոյցք յաղագս նորա այսպէս:
| 37:4 And there are stories about him as follows:
|
37:5 Կին ոմն յազգէ Արշակունեաց, անձամբ հարստի եւ խոշորագեղ, վարար, զոր ոչ ոք դիմագրաւեաց առնուլ կնութեան, ծնանի երկուս մանկունս յանկարգ խառնակութենէ, որպէս Պասիփայէ զՄինոտովրոս:
| 37:5 A certain woman of the Arsacid family, fat of body, horribly ugly, and libidinous, whom no one could bear to marry, gave birth to two children after an illicit intercourse, as Pasiphae bore the Minotaur:

37:6 Եւ ի զարգանալ մանկանցն` կոչեն անուանս Երուանդ եւ Երուազ:
| 37:6 When the children grew up, they called them Eruand and Eruaz:
|
37:7 Եւ ի չափ հասեալ Երուանդայ` լինի սրտեայ եւ անդամովք յաղթ:
| 37:7 On reaching maturity Eruand proved to be courageous and strong limbed:
|
37:8 Սա ի բազում իրս վերակացու առաջնորդութեամբ առաքեալ ի Սանատրկոյ, գտանի երեւելի, մինչեւ ամենայն նախարարացն Հայոց առաջին լինել. եւ խոնարհութեամբ եւ առատաձեռնութեամբ զամենայն ոք յանգուցեալ յինքն յարեցոյց:
| 37:8 He was appointed by Sanatruk as overseer in many affairs and became increasingly famous until he was the first of all the Armenian princes. By his modesty and liberality, he drew everyone to him:

37:9 Եւ ի մեռանելն Սանատրկոյ` միաբանեալ թագաւորեցուցին զնա, առանց արանց յազգէն Բագրատունեաց լինել թագադիր:
| 37:9 And at the death of Sanatruk they in unison made him king without anyone from the Bagratuni family acting as coronant:

37:10 Բայց ի թագաւորելն իւրում Երուանդ, կասկած ունելով յորդւոցն Սանատրկոյ` կոտորէ զամենեսեան:
| 37:10 But when Eruand became king, having suspicions of the sons of Sanatruk, he slaughtered them all:
|
37:11 Թուի թէ վրէժս հատուցաւ սպանման որդւոցն Աբգարու:
| 37:11 It seemed that the murder of Abgar’s sons was avenged:
|
37:12 Բայց մի ոմն տղայ, Արտաշէս անուն, զոր առեալ ստընտուի նորա` փախեաւ ի կողմանս Հերայ, ի հովուավանս Մաղխազանի, լուր առնելով դայեկի նորա Սմբատայ, որդւոյ Բիւրատայ Բագրատունւոյ, ի Սպեր գաւառի, ի շէնն Սմբատաւանի:
| 37:12 But one child, Artashēs by name, whom his wet nurse had taken, escaped to the regions of Her, to the shepherds’ cottages of Maḷkhazan; she informed his tutor Smbat, son of Biurat Bagratuni, in the province of Sper in the village of Smbatavan:

37:13 Արդ` իբրեւ լսէ Սմբատ որդի Բիւրատայ զբաւթն Սանատրկոյ եւ զգոյժ կոտորման որդւոց նորա` առեալ զերկուս դստերս իւր, զՍմբատանոյշ եւ զՍմբատուրհի` նստուցանէ ի Բայբերդի, արս քաջս թողլով ի վերայ ամրոցին. եւ ինքն հանդերձ միով կնաւ իւրով եւ սակաւ արամբք գայ անցանէ ի խնդիր մանկանն Արտաշիսի:
| 37:13 Now when Smbat, son of Biurat, heard the sad news about Sanatruk and the distressing news of the slaughter of his sons, he took his two daughters, Smbatanoysh and Smbaturhi, and settled them in Bayberd, leaving valiant men in charge of the castle. He himself with his one wife and a few men went out to search for the young Artashēs:

37:14 Որում իրազգած եղեալ արքային Երուանդայ` հետայոյզս առաքէ. վասն որոյ բովանդակ ժամանակս ընդ երեսս լերանց եւ դաշտաց այլակերպեալ շրջելով հետի հանդերձ մանկամբն` սնուցանէ ի հովուավանս եւ յանդէորդս, մինչեւ պարապ գտեալ ժամ` անցանէ առ Դարեհ արքայ Պարսից:
| 37:14 When King Eruand learned about this he sent out scouts. Therefore he, Smbat, wandered for a long time on foot over the mountains and plains in disguise with the child and brought him up in the cottages of shepherds and herdsmen until he found an opportunity to pass over to Darius, king of Persia:

37:15 Եւ քանզի այր քաջ էր Սմբատ եւ ծանաւթ յառաջագոյն` պատուի մեծապէս ընդ զաւրագլուխսն Պարսից, սապէս եւ մանուկն ընդ որդիս թագաւորին, տեղի բնակութեան առեալ զԲատ եւ զՈզոմն կոչեցեալ գաւառս:
| 37:15 And because Smbat was a valiant man and well known from before, he was greatly honored among the Persian generals - as was the child among the king’s sons - and they received as residence the provinces called Bat and Ozomn:
