52:1 Եթէ ո՛րպիսի էր Սմբատ, եւ զի՛նչ յԱլանս գործեաց. եւ բնակել Արտազու:
| 52:1 What sort of man Smbat was, and what he did among the Alans and the settlement of Artaz:

52:2 Սիրելի է ինձ ասել եւ վասն առնն քաջին Սմբատայ. քանզի արդարեւ ըստ առասպելին ոչ ինչ կարի հեռի ի ճշմարտութենէն. որ ունէր հասակ անդամոց համեմատ քաջութեանն, եւ առաքինութեան ոգւոցն որսորդ, եւ գեղեցկութեան ալեաւք վայելչացեալ. սակաւ ինչ արեան նիշ ունելով յաչսն` որպէս դրակոնտիկոն ի վերայ ոսկւոյ եւ ի մէջ մարգարտոյ ծագէր. եւ ի վերայ շոյտ անձին եւ մարմնոյ` զգոյշ յամենայնի, եւ տուչութիւն յաջողուածոց ունէր ի մարտս առաւել քան զամենայն ոք:
| 52:2 It is pleasant for me to tell of the valiant man Smbat, for indeed, what the fable says is not very far from the truth. The stature of his limbs was in proportion to his valor; he pursued virtue of the spirit; he was notable for the beauty of his hair. He had a small blood mark in his eyes, which shone like enamel on gold and set in pearl. In addition to being agile of person and body, he was prudent in all things and had a gift for success in battle more than anyone else:

52:3 Զի յետ այնչափ արութեանց` աւգնական եղբաւրն Սաթինկան յաշխարհն Ալանաց հանդերձ զաւրու երթայ հրամանաւ Արտաշիսի:
| 52:3 For after so many brave deeds he went on Artashēs’ orders to the land of the Alans with an army to support the brother of Sat’inik:

52:4 Քանզի մեռաւ հայր Սաթինկան, եւ այլ ոմն բռնացեալ թագաւորեաց աշխարհին Ալանաց, եւ հալածէր զեղբայրն Սաթինկան. զոր վանեալ հերքէ Սմբատ, եւ տիրացուցանէ ի վերայ ազգին զեղբայրն Սաթինկան, եւ զերկիր հակառակորդացն աւերէ. զամենայն միահամուռ ածէ գերի սաստիկ յԱրտաշատ:
| 52:4 For Sat’inik’s father had died and someone else was ruling as a tyrant over the land of the Alans and had expelled Sat’inik’s brother. But Smbat put him to flight, restored Sat’inik’s brother as lord of his people, and devastated the lands of his opponents, bringing them all as secure captives to Artashat:

52:5 Եւ հրամայեալ Արտաշիսի բնակեցուցանել զնոսա ի հարաւոյ յարեւելից կուսէ Մասեաց, որ կոչէր Շաւարշական գաւառ, ի վերայ պահելով զբնիկ անունն Արտազ. քանզի եւ աշխարհն ուստի գերեցանն` Արտազ կոչի մինչեւ ցայսաւր ժամանակի:
| 52:5 Artashēs ordered him to settle them on the south- eastern side of Masis, which is called the province of Shavarshan, though it has kept in addition its original name Artaz, because the land from which they were brought as captives is called Artaz to this very day:
