83:1 Յաղագս առնելոյ կին Տրդատայ զԱշխէն, եւ Կոստանդնի զՄաքսիմինայ, եւ թէ ո՛րպէս հանդիպեցաւ հաւատոց:
| 83:1 Concerning Trdat’s marriage to Ashkhēn and Constantine’s to Maximina, and how he was converted:

83:2 Եկեալ Տրդատայ յաշխարհս` առաքէ զՍմբատ ասպետ, զհայր Բագարատայ` ածել զկոյսն Աշխէն, զդուստրն Աշխադարայ, իւր ի կնութիւն. որ ինչ նուազ էր կոյսն արքային հասակի:
| 83:2 When Trdat arrived in our land he sent General Smbat, the father of Bagarat, to bring the maiden Ashkhēn, the daughter of Ashkhadar, to be his wife. This maiden was no less tall than the king:

83:3 Եւ հրամայէ գրել զնա արշակունի եւ զգեցուցանել ծիրանիս եւ թագ կապել, զի հարսնասցի արքայի:
| 83:3 He ordered her to be inscribed as an Arsacid, to be vested with purple, and to be crowned in order to become the king’s bride:

83:4 Յորմէ եղեւ որդի Խոսրով, ոչ համեմատ հասակի ծնողաց իւրոց:
| 83:4 From her was born a son Khosrov, who did not attain the stature of his parents:

83:5 Ընդ նոյն աւուրս լինին հարսանիք եւ Մաքսիմինայ դստերն Դիոկղետիանոսի ի Նիկոմիդայ, փեսայանալով նմա Կոստանդիանոսի կեսարի որդւոյ Կոստայ թագաւորին Հռոմայ, որ ոչ էր ի դստերէն Մաքսիմիանոսի, այլ Հեղենայ պոռնկէ ծնեալ:
| 83:5 In those same days occurred also the marriage of Maximina, the daughter of Diocletian, in Nicomedia; her husband was the Emperor Constantine, son of Constantius, the Roman emperor, who had not been born from Maximian’s daughter but from a prostitute, Helen:

83:6 Այս Կոստանդիանոս բարեկամացեալ ի հարսանիսն ընդ Տրդատայ մեր թագաւորի:
| 83:6 This Constantine at the time of his marriage became friendly with our King Trdat:

83:7 Եւ յետ ոչ բազում ամաց մեռեալ Կոստանդ` փոխանորդ նմա առաքէ Դիոկղետիանոս զնորին որդի եւ զիւր որդիացեալն Կոստանդիանոս:
| 83:7 And when Constantius died not many years later, Diocletian sent his son and his own son- in- law Constantine as his successor:

83:8 Սա յառաջ քան զթագաւորելն, մինչ դեռ կեսար էր, պարտեալ ի մարտն, եւ տրտմութեամբ մեծաւ ննջեալ` երեւութացաւ նմա ի քուն խաչ աստեղեայ յերկնից, պարունակեալ գրով, ասէ. «Այսու յաղթեա». զոր արարեալ սիւգնոյն եւ յառաջաբերեալ` յաղթեաց պատերազմացն:
| 83:8 The latter, before he became emperor and while he was still Caesar, was defeated in battle; when in great distress he had fallen asleep, there appeared to him in his sleep a cross of stars from heaven, which was surrounded by an inscription saying: “ By this conquer.” He made this his emblem, and bearing it before him was victorious in his wars:

83:9 Բայց յետոյ հրապուրեալ ի կնոջէն իւրմէ Մաքսիմինայ, ի դստերէն Դիոկղետիանոսի, յարոյց հալածանս եկեղեցւոյ. եւ զբազումս վկայեալ` ինքն եղեփանդական բորոտութեամբ ըստ բոլոր ընկալեալ մարմնոյն ապականեցաւ վասն յանդգնութեանն:
| 83:9 But later, cajoled by his wife Maximina, the daughter of Diocletian, he raised persecutions against the church. After making many martyrs, because of his presumption he himself was afflicted with elephantine leprosy over his whole body:

83:10 Զոր ոչ կարացին բուժել արիողական կախարդքն եւ մարսիկեան բժիշկքն. յաղագս որոյ յղեաց առ Տրդատ` առաքել նմա դիւթս ի Պարսից եւ ի Հնդկաց. սակայն եւ այնք ոչ հասին նմա յաւգուտ:
| 83:10 which the soothsayers and Marsian doctors were unable to heal. Therefore, he sent to Trdat asking him to send magicians from Persia and India. But even they brought him no relief:

83:11 Զոր եւ քուրմք ոմանք ի դիւաց խրատուէ հրամայեցին բազմութիւն տղայոց զենուլ յաւազանս եւ ջերմ արեամբ լուանալ եւ ողջանալ:
| 83:11 Some pagan priests, at the advice of demons, bade him slaughter a great number of children in a basin and to wash himself in the warm blood and be healed:

83:12 Որոյ լուեալ զլալիւն մանկանցն, հանդերձ մարցն կականմամբք, գթացեալ մարդասիրեաց, զնոցայն լաւ վարկուցեալ քան զիւրն փրկութիւն:
| 83:12 But when he heard the crying of the children and the wailing of their mothers, he had pity and spared them, preferring their salvation to his own:

83:13 Յաղագս որոյ զփոխարէնն յԱստուծոյ ընդունի, յանրջական տեսութիւն յԱռաքելոցն առեալ հրաման` սրբիլ լուացմամբ կենսատու աւազանին ի ձեռն Սեղբեստրոսի եպիսկոպոսի Հռոմայ, որ ի նմանէ հալածանացն թագուցեալ էր ի Սերապտիոն լերին. յորմէ եւ աշակերտեալ հաւատաց. զբռնաւորսն ամենայն բառնալով Աստուծոյ յերեսաց նորա, որպէս համառաւտ ուսուցանէ քեզ Ագաթանգեղոս:
| 83:13 Therefore he received his recompense from God: in a vision he received a command from the apostles to purify himself by the life- giving washing of the font at the hands of Silvester, the bishop of Rome, who on being persecuted by him had hidden in the mountain of Seraption. Being instructed by him he was converted, and then God removed all the tyrants from before his face, as Agathangelos informs you in brief:
