86:1 Յաղագս Նունէի երանելւոյ, եթէ ո՛րպէս եղեւ պատճառք փրկութեան Վրաց:
| 86:1 Concerning the blessed Nunē; how she became the cause of the Georgians’ salvation:

86:2 Կին ոմն, անուն Նունէ, յընկերաց սրբոց Հռիփսիմեանց ի ցրուելոցն, փախստեամբ հասեալ յաշխարհն Վրաց ի Մծխիթայ, ի նոցա քաղաքն նախագահ, յոյժ ճգնութեամբ ստացեալ շնորհս բժշկութեան, որով եւ զբազում ախտաժետս բժշկեալ, եւ գլխովին զկին Միհրանայ առաջնորդին Վրաց:
| 86:2 A certain woman called Nunē, one of the scattered companions of Saint Rhipsimē who had fled to Georgia, to Mtskheta the capital, acquired the grace of healing through her extremely ascetic life. Thus, she had cured many afflicted people, most notably the wife of Mihran, the prince of Georgia:

86:3 Վասն որոյ հարցեալ զնա Միհրանայ, եթէ որո՛վ զաւրութեամբ առնես զայս սքանչելիս` ուսաւ զքարոզութիւն Աւետարանին Քրիստոսի. եւ ախորժելով լուեալ` պատմեաց իւրոց նախարարացն հանդերձ գովեստիւ:
| 86:3 Therefore Mihran asked her: “ By what power do you perform these miracles?” and he learned of the preaching of Christ’s gospel. Hearing it with pleasure he repeated it to his nobles with praise:

86:4 Եւ իսկոյն եհաս առ նա լուր սքանչելեացն, որ եղեն ի Հայս ի թագաւորն եւ ի նախարարսն, եւ զընկերացն երանելւոյն Նունեայ. ընդ որ հիացեալ` զրուցեաց երանելւոյն Նունեայ, յորմէ եւ ստուգագոյնս եւս տեղեկացաւ զամենայն ոճով:
| 86:4 And at that very time news reached him of the miracles that had been worked in Armenia for the king and the nobles, and of the companions of blessed Nunē. Astonished at these things he informed blessed Nunē, from whom he learned about everything more precisely and in detail:

86:5 Եւ եղեւ ընդ աւուրսն ընդ այնոսիկ ելանել Միհրանայ յորս. մոլորեցաւ ի դժուարս լերանց, խաւարեալ աւդով, այլ ոչ տեսանելեաւք, ըստ այնմ` եթէ կոչէ զմէգ բարբառով, եւ դարձեալ` թէ զտիւ ի գիշեր մթացուցանէ:
| 86:5 It happened in those days that Mihran went out to hunt. He went astray in the crags of the mountains as the air darkened - although his vision was not obscured - according to the saying: “ He summons the mist with his voice” [Job 38:34] and again: “ He darkens the day into night:

86:6 Այսպիսեաւ Միհրան ըմբռնեալ խաւարաւ, որ եղեւ նմա առիթ մշտնջենաւոր լուսոյն. քանզի զարհուրեալ, յիշեաց զոր լուաւն վասն Տրդատայ, եթէ ի ճանապարհ ելեալ, կամելով յորս գնալ` հասին նմա հարուածք ի Տեառնէ. զոր համարեցաւ, թէ եւ նմա այնպիսի ինչ դիպելոց է:
| 86:6 By such darkness was Mihran enveloped, which became for him a cause of eternal light. In his fear he remembered what he had heard about Trdat: that when he had set out intending to go hunting, torments from the Lord had fallen upon him. He reckoned that something similar would also befall himself:

86:7 Եւ երկիւղիւ մեծաւ պաշարեալ, խնդրեաց աղաւթիւք` լուսաւորիլ աւդոյն եւ դառնալ խաղաղութեամբ, եւ պաշտել զԱստուածն Նունէի խոստանայր. որում հանդիպեալ` կատարեաց զասացեալսն:
| 86:7 Overcome with great fear, he begged in prayer that the air might become light and that he might return in peace, and he promised to worship Nunē’s God. This was granted him, and he fulfilled his promise:

86:8 Իսկ երանելւոյն Նունէի խնդրեալ արս հաւատարիմս` յղեաց առ սուրբն Գրիգոր, եթէ զի՛նչ հրամայեսցէ նմա գործել այնուհետեւ. քանզի յաւժարութեամբ ընկալան Վիրք զքարոզութիւն Աւետարանին:
| 86:8 Now blessed Nunē sought out trustworthy men and sent them to Saint Gregory, asking what he might command her to do from then on, for the Georgians had happily accepted the preaching of the gospel:

86:9 Եւ հրաման ընդունի` կործանել զկուռսն, որպէս ինքն արար, եւ կանգնել զպատուական նշան խաչին մինչեւ ցաւր տալոյ Տեառն հովիւ յառաջնորդութիւն նոցա:
| 86:9 She received a command to destroy the idols, just as he had done himself, and to set up the honorable sign of the cross until the day when the Lord would grant them a pastor as guide:

86:10 Եւ իսկոյն կործանեաց զամպրոպային պատկերն Արամազդայ, որ կայր մեկուսի ի քաղաքէն, գետոյն հզաւրի ընդ մէջ անցանելով. զոր սովոր էին երկրպագել այգուն այգուն ի տանեաց իւրաքանչիւր, զի հանդէպ նոցա երեւէր. իսկ եթէ ոք զոհել կամէր` անցեալ ընդ գետն առաջի մեհենիցն զոհէր:
| 86:10 So straightway she destroyed the image of Aramazd, god of thunder, which stood outside the city; between the city and the image flowed the powerful river Kura. Everyone had been accustomed to worship this in the mornings from their roofs, for it faced them. But if anyone wished to sacrifice, he crossed the river and sacrificed in front of the temples:

86:11 Բայց ի վերայ նորա յարեան նախարարք քաղաքին, եթէ ո՞ւմ արդեաւք փոխանակ կռոցն երկրպագեմք. ուսան` եթէ նշանի խաչին Քրիստոսի. զոր արարեալ կանգնեցին ի վերայ վայելուչ բլրոյն յարեւելից կուսէ քաղաքին, մեկուսի բաժանեալ եւ նա փոքրագոյն գետով:
| 86:11 However, the nobles of the city rose up against her and said: “ Whom then are we to worship instead of the idols?” They were told: “ The sign of Christ’s cross.” This they made and set up on the pretty hill to the east of the city, separated from it by a very small river:

86:12 Եւ երկրպագեցին ամենայն բազմութիւնն ընդ առաւաւտն նոյնպէս ի տանեաց իւրաքանչիւր:
| 86:12 And all the people worshipped it in the mornings from their roofs, just as they had done previously:
|
86:13 Բայց յորժամ ելեալ ի բլուրն տեսին փայտ կոփեալ, ոչ ճարտարաց ինչ գործ` յոլովք քան զսակաւս արհամարհեցին, իբր թէ այնպիսեաւ լի իցէ ամենայն անտառն նոցա, եւ թողեալ ի բաց գնացին:
| 86:13 But when they went out to the hill and saw a piece of hewn wood, no work of craftsmen, more than a few despised it on the grounds that their whole forest was full of such objects:

86:14 Իսկ բարերարին Աստուծոյ նայեցեալ ի գայթակղութիւն նոցա` առաքեաց յերկնից սիւն ամպոյ, եւ լցաւ լեառնն բուրմամբ անուշութեան. եւ ձայն բազմութեան սաղմոսերգուաց լսելի եղեւ քաղցր յոյժ, եւ ծագեաց լոյս տպաւորութեամբ խաչի, ըստ ձեւոյ եւ չափոյ փայտեղինին, եւ կալով ի վերայ նորա հանդերձ երկոտասան աստեղաւք. յոր ամենեցուն հաւատացեալ` երկրպագեցին նմա:
| 86:14 And they left it and went away. But the benevolent God, looking down on their stumbling, sent from heaven a pillar of cloud, and the mountain was filled with a sweet odor, and there was heard the sound of a host singing psalms exceedingly sweetly, and there shone out a light in the form of a cross, the same in shape and size as the wooden cross, and it stood over it with twelve stars. At this everyone believed and they worshipped it:

86:15 Եւ յայնմ հետէ զաւրութիւնք բժշկութեան կատարէին ի նմանէ:
| 86:15 Thereafter miracles of healing were performed by it:

86:16 Իսկ երանելին Նունէ ել գնաց անտի աշակերտել եւ զայլ եւս գաւառսն Վրաց յանապակ լեզուէն, շրջելով անպաճուճաբար եւ առանց աւելորդաց, աւտարացեալ յաշխարհէ եւ որ ի սմա. կամ թէ ճշմարտագոյն ասել` ի խաչ ելեալ, ի կրթութիւն մահու զկեանսն առնելով, բանիւ վկայ Բանին Աստուծոյ, եւ յաւժարութեամբն իւրով որպէս արեամբ պսակեալ:
| 86:16 But the blessed Nunē then went out to proselytize the other provinces of Georgia with her pure tongue, traveling around without pomp or excess, a stranger to the world and all in it - or to speak more truly, crucified, making this world a practice for death, by her words a witness to the Word of God, and by her zeal crowned as if in blood:

86:17 Զոր համարձակիմ ասել, առաքելուհի եղեալ քարոզեաց ի Կղարջաց սկսեալ առ դրամբք Ալանաց եւ Կասբից մինչեւ ի սահմանս Մասքթաց, որպէս ուսուցանէ քեզ Ագաթանգեղոս:
| 86:17 We make bold to say that she became an apostle. She preached beginning from Kḷarjk’ to the gates of the Alans and the Caspians, as far as the borders of the Massagetae, as Agathangelos informs you:

86:18 Բայց մեք դարձցուք անդրէն ի պատմութիւն Տրդատայ յարձակմանն ի Պարսս:
| 86:18 But let us now return to the story of Trdat’s invasion of Persia:
