88:1 Կապումն Լիկիանոսի, եւ փոխումն արքունեացն ի Հռոմէ, եւ շինել Կոստանդնուպաւլսի:
| 88:1 The imprisonment of Licinius, the transfer of the court from Rome, and the building of Constantinople:

88:2 Ի բառնալն Աստուծոյ զբռնաւորսն ամենայն յերեսաց Կոստանդիանոսի` մեծարեաց նա զԼիկիանոս մեծութիւն յոյժ, եւ ետ նմա ի կնութեան զքոյր իւր ոչ համամայր, ծիրանեաւք եւ պսակաւ կայսերական զարդարեաց զնա, եւ յերկրորդականս հասուցեալ պատիւս` արքայ ամենայն արեւելից կացոյց:
| 88:2 When God had removed all the tyrants from before Constantine, the latter greatly honored Licinius and gave him to wife his own stepsister, adorned him with the purple and the crown of a Caesar, bestowed on him the second rank, and made him ruler over all the east:

88:3 Բայց զոր աստուածային բանն առ Եբրայեցիսն անհնարին համարեալ, չարութեանն փոփոխումն` նոյն եւ աստանաւր պատահի. ընձու անկարելի է զխայտուցսն փոխել, եւ Եթովպացւոյ զթխութիւն, նոյնպէս մարդոյ ամպարշտի` զբարսն:
| 88:3 But what divine Scripture said with regard to the Hebrews, reckoning the transformation of evil to be impossible, the same happened here also. It is impossible for the leopard to change his spots or the Ethiopian his skin, and likewise for the impious man to change his way of life:

88:4 Քանզի սա նախ առ ի հաւատսն գտանի դրժող, եւ երկրորդ առ բարեգործն իւր ապստամբ:
| 88:4 For first he was found to be doing violence to the faith, and second to be a rebel with regard to his benefactor:

88:5 Յարոյց հալածանս եկեղեցւոյ, եւ նենգութիւն գաղտնի ընդդէմ Կոստանդիանոսի. նա եւ չարիս բազմազանս հասոյց ամենեցուն, որ ընդ իւրով իշխանութեամբն էին, ցանկասէրս այս եւ գարշելի ալեւոր, ներկածոյ ունելով զհերս. որ եւ զկին իւր ի մեծ նեղութիւն արգել, սակս տարփութեան երանելւոյն Գլափիւռայ, վասն որոյ սպան զսուրբն Բասիլիոս Ամասիոյ Պոնտացւոց եպիսկոպոս:
| 88:5 He raised persecutions against the church and worked secret treachery against Constantine. Likewise, he brought all sorts of evil on all those who were under his power. This lascivious and execrable old man, who dyed his hair, affected great tribulation on his wife because of his passion for the blessed Glaphyra. For this reason, he killed Saint Basil, the bishop of Amasya in Pontus:

88:6 Եւ իբրեւ յայտնեցաւ դաւն, եւ գիտաց եթէ նմա լուռ ոչ լինի Կոստանդիանոս` ժողովեաց զաւրս ընդդիմանալ պատերազմաւ:
| 88:6 When the plot was revealed and he knew that Constantine would not remain silent about it, he gathered an army to oppose him in war:

88:7 Եւ ցրտացեալ ի սիրոյն Տրդատայ մեր թագաւորի, ակնածէր որպէս արդարեւ ի թշնամւոյ. քանզի գիտէր եթէ ատելի է արդարոյ ամենայն ամբարիշտ:
| 88:7 And since Trdat our king had grown cold in his love, he feared him as a real enemy, for he knew that every impious one is hateful to the just:

88:8 Իսկ իբրեւ եկն յաղթողն Կոստանդիանոս` մատնեաց Աստուած ի ձեռս նորա զԼիկիանոս. յոր խնայեալ որպէս ի ծերունի եւ ի քեռայր` ետ տանել ի Գաղղիուս հանդերձ երկաթի կապանաւք, դնել ի մետաղս, զի աղաւթեսցէ առ Աստուած, որում մեղաւն, թերեւս երկայնամիտ լիցի առ նա:
| 88:8 Now when the victorious Constantine arrived, God delivered Licinius into his hands. Being merciful to him as an old man and his son- in- law, he had him taken to Gaul in iron bonds and sent to the mines that he might pray to God, against whom he had sinned, that perchance He be long suffering toward him:

88:9 Եւ ինքն հանդերձ որդւովքն մի թագաւորութիւն զՀռոմայեցւոցն ցուցեալ` զքսանեմեակն ի Նիկոմիդացւոց քաղաքին կատարեաց:
| 88:9 He himself with his sons showed that the Roman empire was one; and he celebrated his twentieth anniversary in the city of Nicomedia:

88:10 Զի ի չորրորդ ամէ հալածանացն սկսեալ թագաւորել մինչեւ ցերեքտասաներորդ ամն խաղաղութեան, զոր եւ այսաւր տաւնէ աշխարհ:
| 88:10 He reigned from the fourth year of the persecutions until the thirteenth year of the peace, an anniversary the world still celebrates today:

88:11 Եւ ոչ պարտ վարկուցեալ ի Հռոմ դառնալ, այլ ի Բիւզանդիոն անցեալ` հաստատէ զարքունիսն, յանրջական իմն նախատեսութեանց հրամայեալ. գերապայծառս իմն առնելով շինուածս, հնգապատիկ յաւելեալ մեծացուցանէ:
| 88:11 Thinking it unnecessary to return to Rome, he moved to Byzantium and there established the court, being ordered to do so in a prophetic dream. He constructed there very splendid buildings and increased the city fivefold:

88:12 Քանզի ոչ ուրուք մեծի թագաւորի կայր ի նմա ձեռնարկութիւնք այնպիսիք, բայց ի սակաւուց ինչ իրաց, որպէս տիեզերակալին Աղեքսանդրի Մակեդոնացւոյ, յորժամ անտի ընդդէմ Դարեհի սպառազինեցաւ, եւ սակս այնորիկ շինեաց ի յիշատակ իւր զասացեալն Ստրատիգին. քանզի ի նմա զպատերազմականսն յաւրինեաց զկազմութիւն:
| 88:12 It contained no such undertakings of any great king, save a few buildings like those of the world conqueror Alexander of Macedon when he prepared there for war against Darius, and for that reason built in his own memory the so- called Strategion - for in it he stored the war materiel:

88:13 Զոր յետոյ Սեւերիոս արքայ Հռոմայեցւոց նորոգեաց. եւ ինքն շինեաց զբաղանիսն ի տեղւոջ սեանն, որ ունէր ստորագիր խորհրդական անուն Արեգակն, ըստ Թրակացւոց բառի Զեւքսիպոն, որոյ կոչմամբ յորջորջեցան եւ բաղանիքն:
| 88:13 This was later renewed by the Roman emperor Severus, who himself built baths in the place of the column, which had as an inscription the mystical name of the sun, in the Thracian tongue Xeuxippus, by which name the baths were also called:

88:14 Սա շինեաց եւ զտեսարանն եւ զգազանամարտկացն եւ զխաղալկացն, եւ զձիընթացսն ոչ կատարմամբ:
| 88:14 He also built the theater, both for wild animal combats and for players, and the hippodrome, which was unfinished:

88:15 Այլ Կոստանդիանոսի ամենապատիկ յարդարեալ` անուանեաց նոր Հռոմ. այլ աշխարհ կոչեաց զնա Կոստանդիանու քաղաք:
| 88:15 Constantine established the city in every way and called it New Rome, but the world called it the city of Constantine:

88:16 Ասեն եւ զայս, եթէ գաղտնի եհան ի Հռոմայ զասացեալն Պաղադիոն քերածոյ, եւ եդ զնա ի Փորոնին ներքոյ սեանն, որ առ ի յիւրմէ կանգնեալ:
| 88:16 They also say that he secretly took from Rome the sculpture called the Palladium and placed it in the Forum under the column that he himself had erected:

88:17 Բայց այս մեզ անհաւատալի է, այլոց` որպէս կամք իցեն:
| 88:17 But this is unbelievable to us, though others may think as they wish:
