| 9:1 Concerning our Arshak the First and his deeds:

9:2 Արշակ որդի Վաղարշակայ թագաւորէ ի վերայ Հայոց ամս երեքտասան. նախանձաւոր եւ հետեւող հայրենեացն լեալ առաքինութեանց` բազում կարգս ուղղութեան գործեաց. պատերազմելով ընդ Պոնտացիս, եւ նշանակ եթող յեզեր ծովուն մեծի. զնիզակն իւր, ասեն, զբոլորատէգ, որ էր արեամբ զեռնոց մխեալ, ձգեալ ի հետեւակուց` խորագոյնս նստոյց յերկանաքար արձանին, զոր կանգնեաց ի ծովեզերն:
| 9:2 Arshak, son of Vaḷarshak, ruled over Armenia for thirteen years. A zealous follower of his father’s virtues, he established many wise institutions. Waging war against Pontus, he left a monument on the shore of the great sea. Standing on foot, they say, he cast his round- tipped lance, which was tempered with the blood of snakes, and implanted it deep into the stone column that he had set up on the seashore:

9:3 Զայս արձան բազում ժամանակս պատուեցին Պոնտացիք որպէս զառ ի յաստուածոցն գործ:
| 9:3 For a long time the inhabitants of Pontus honored this column as a work of the gods:

9:4 Իսկ ի գոռալն Արտաշիսի միւսանգամ ընդ Պոնտացիս` ընկեցեալ ասեն զարձանն ի ծով:
| 9:4 But when Artashēs attacked Pontus again, they say that he threw the column into the sea:

9:5 Ի սորա աւուրս աղմուկ մեծ լեալ ի գաւտիս մեծի լերինն Կաւկասու յաշխարհին Բուլղարաց, եւ բազումք ի նոցանէ հատուածեալք եկին յաշխարհս մեր, եւ բնակեցան ի ներքոյ Կողայ, յարգաւանդահող եւ ի հացաւէտ տեղիս մինչեւ ի ժամանակս բազումս:
| 9:5 In his days there was a great tumult in the zone of the great Caucasus Mountain in the country of the Bulgars. Many of them split off and came to our land and settled for a long time below Koi in the fertile regions rich in wheat:

9:6 Ի սմանէ նեղեալ որդիք Բագարատայ վասն զկուռս պաշտելոյ` երկուք ոմանք ի նոցանէ սրով կատարեցան արիաբար ի վերայ հայրենի աւրինացն. զորս ոչ պատկառեմ ասել հետեւող լինել Անանիանց եւ Եղիազարեանց:
| 9:6 He persecuted the sons of Bagarat in an effort to make them worship idols. Two of them bravely died by the sword for their ancestral customs. I am not ashamed to call them followers of the companions of Anania and Eleazar:

9:7 Բայց այլքն յանձն առնուն այսչափ միայն, ի շաբաթու հեծանել յորս եւ ի պատերազմունս, եւ զմանկունս թողուլ անթլփատս, յորժամ լինիցին. քանզի անկինք էին:
| 9:7 But the others accepted this much only: to ride out to hunt or to war on the Sabbath and to leave their children uncircumcised when they would be born - for they were unmarried:

9:8 Եւ հրամայեցաւ յԱրշակայ` մի՛ տալ նոցա կանայս յամենայն նախարարութեանց, եթէ ոչ ուխտ պայմանի դիցեն` թողուլ զթլփատութիւնն:
| 9:8 And it was commanded by Arshak that they should not be given wives from any of the princely houses unless they made an oath to abandon circumcision:

9:9 Զոր յանձն առնուն զերկուս զայս միայն, այլ ոչ եւ զերկրպագութիւն կռոց:
| 9:9 They accepted only these two conditions, but not the worship of idols:

9:10 Աստանաւր սպառին բանք ծերունւոյն Մար Աբայ Կատինայ:
