| 19:1 How Arshak despised the Greek emperor:

19:2 Ընդ այնոսիկ ապա ժամանակս յարեաւ խռովութիւն արքային Պարսից Շապհոյ ի հիւսիսականաց ազգաց:
| 19:2 In those times a disturbance was fomented by the northern nations against the Persian king Shapuh:

19:3 Եւ Յունաց թագաւորեալ Վաղենտիանոս, եւ գումարտակ ի Միջերկրեայս առաքեալ` հալածականս առնէ զզաւրս Պարսից:
| 19:3 The Greek emperor was Valentinian, and he sent a force to Anatolia and expelled the Persian army:

19:4 Ապա առաքէ առ Արշակ մեր թագաւոր թուղթ:
| 19:4 Then he sent a letter to our King Arshak:

19:6 Ինքնակալ Վաղենտիանոս Աւգոստոս, հանդերձ աթոռակցաւ մերով եւ թագակցաւ Վաղեսիւ կայսերաւ. Արշակայ Հայոց արքայի խնդալ:

19:7 Պարտ էր քեզ յիշել զչարիսն, որ անցին ընդ ձեզ յանաստուածիցն Պարսից, եւ զերախտիսն` որ ի մէնջ ի վաղնջուց մինչեւ ցքեզ, եւ հեռանալ ի նոցանէ եւ մաւտել ի մեզ:
| 19:7 You must remember the evils that were inflicted on you by the godless Persians and the blessings that you derived from us from earlier times up to your own day. So, you should draw away from them and near to us:

19:8 Որպէս զի խառնեալ ընդ զաւրս մեր` մարտիցես ընդ նոսա, եւ հանդերձ գոհացողական թղթովք մերոց զաւրավարացդ առաքեսցես զհարկս աշխարհիդ. եւ առեալ զեղբայրս քո, եւ որ ընդ սմա վտարանդիքս` ի բաց ածցեն:
| 19:8 to join with our forces and fight against them; and with favorable letters from our generals you should send the tribute of your country. Then your brother and the fugitives who are with him will be released:

19:9 Ողջ լեր ամենայն հնազանդութեամբ Հռոմայեցւոց տէրութեանս:
| 19:9 Be well in complete subjection to the Roman empire:

19:10 Իսկ Արշակ եւ ոչ պատասխանի առնէ թղթոյն, այլ նշկահեալ արհամարհեաց զնոսա. նա եւ ոչ զհետ Շապհոյ միտեցաւ ամենայն սրտիւ. այլ անձնահաճ եղեալ, պարծելով հանապազ ի գինարբուս եւ յերգս վարձակաց. քաջ եւ արի երեւեալ քան զԱքիլլեւս, իսկ արդեամբք Թերսիտեայ նմանեալ կաղի եւ սրագլխոյ. վտարանջեալ յիւրոց նախագլխացն, մինչեւ զամբարտաւանութեանն ընկալաւ վարձս:
| 19:10 However, Arshak did not reply to the letter but scorned and despised the messengers. Nor did he favor Shapuh wholeheartedly, but in his vanity continuously gloried in wine drinking and in the songs of dancing girls. He seemed more brave and noble than Achilles, but in truth was like the lame and pointed- head Thersites. His own nobles rebelled against him until he received the reward of his pride:
