22:1 Եթէ ո՛րպէս եղեւ խռովութիւն Արշակայ ընդ Գնելոյ, եւ մահ Տիրանայ:
| 22:1 How the dispute between Arshak and Gnel occurred, and the death of Tiran:

22:2 Իսկ Գնէլ եկեալ յաւանն Կուաշ, որ յոտին Արագածն կոչեցեալ լերինն, առ կուրացեալ հաւն իւր Տիրան, զի ցայնժամ կենդանի էր:
| 22:2 Now Gnel came to the town of Kuash at the foot of the mountain called Aragats to his blinded grandfather Tiran, for he was still alive:

22:3 Եւ Տիրանայ ողբացեալ դառնապէս զՏրդատ զորդի իւր, զհայրն Գնելոյ, իբր զինքն ունելով պատճառ սպանման նորա. վասն որոյ տայ Գնելոյ զամենայն ինչս իւր, եւ զկալուածս գիւղից եւ դաստակերտաց. եւ ի նմին աւանի Կուաշ հրամայէ բնակել:
| 22:3 Tiran lamented bitterly over Trdat his son, Gnel’s father, holding himself responsible for his murder. Therefore, he gave all his possessions to Gnel and also his holdings of villages and estates, ordering him to live in that same town of Kuash:

22:4 Ապա առնու Գնէլ իւր կին զՓառանձեմ ոմն յազգէն Սիւնեաց. եւ թագաւորապէս արարեալ հարսանիս, տայ առատապէս պարգեւս ամենեցուն նախարարացն:
| 22:4 Then Gnel took as his wife a certain P’aṙandzem of the Siuni family. He celebrated the marriage royally, giving presents to all the princes:

22:5 Որոց հաճեալ ընդ նա եւ սիրեալ` ետուն առ նա զզաւակս իւրեանց. զորս առեալ, մեծապէս հանդերձեաց զինու եւ զարդու. եւ յաւելին եւս սիրել զնա:
| 22:5 They were pleased and friendly toward him and gave him their children. These he accepted and grandly equipped them with arms and finery, so they loved him all the more:

22:6 Աստանաւր եգիտ Տիրիթ պատճառս քսութեան. եւ մատուցեալ առ արքայն հանդերձ բարեկամաւ իւրով Վարդանաւ զինակրաւ արքայի, որ ի Մամիկոնեան տոհմէն էր, ասեն. «Ո՞չ գիտես, զի խորհեալ է Գնելոյ սպանանել զքեզ, զի ինքն փոխանակ քո թագաւորեսցէ:
| 22:6 Here Tirit’ found a pretext for calumny. Approaching the king with his friend Vardan, the king’s squire who was of the Mamikonian family, they said: “ Do you not know that Gnel is plotting to kill you so that he may reign himself in your stead:

22:7 Ահա տե՛ս, արքայ, զնշան իրին, զի բնակեցաւ Գնէլ յԱյրարատ, ի կալուածս ձեր թագաւորաց, եւ սիրտ ամենայն նախարարացն եղեւ ընդ նմա:
| 22:7 Behold, see the proof of the matter, O king. Gnel has taken up residence in Ayrarat in your royal lands, and the affection of all the princes is on his side:

22:8 Քանզի կայսերքն նիւթելով զայդ` ետուն նմա զպատիւ հիւպատոսութեանդ, եւ գանձս սաստիկս, որով` պատրեաց զնախարարսն:
| 22:8 For the emperors have contrived this by giving him the honor of the consulate and much treasure with which he has bribed the princes:

22:9 Երդնոյր Վարդան յարեւն արքայի եւ ասէր. «Իմովք ականջաւք լուայ ի Գնելոյ, զի ասէր, թէ ոչ թողում հաւրեղբաւր իմում զվրէժ մահուան հաւր իմոյ, որ վասն դորա եղեւ:
| 22:9 Vardan swore by the king’s sun, saying: “ With my own ears I have heard Gnel saying, ‘ I shall not abandon the avenging of my father’s death on my uncle on whose account it occurred:

22:10 Այսմ հաւատացեալ Արշակ` յղէ զնոյն իսկ զՎարդան առ Գնէլ, թէ «Ընդէ՞ր բնակեցար յԱյրարատ եւ լուծեր զկարգ հայրենեաց:
| 22:10 Arshak believed this and sent the same Vardan to Gnel to ask: “ Why have you taken up residence in Ayrarat and broken the traditional regulation:

22:11 Քանզի սովորութիւն էր` արքայի միայն բնակել յԱյրարատ եւ միոյ որդւոյ նորա, զոր փոխանորդ թագաւորի պահէին, եւ այլոց Արշակունեաց բնակել ի գաւառս Հաշտենից եւ Աղիովտի եւ Առբերանւոյ, հանդերձ ռոճկաւք եւ մտիւք յարքունուստ:
| 22:11 For it was the custom only for the king to dwell in Ayrarat with one of his sons whom they kept as the crown prince and for the other Arsacids to dwell in the provinces of Hashteank’, Aḷiovit, and Aṙberan, with stipends and revenue from the royal treasury:

22:12 Եւ արդ` ընտրելի է քեզ, կա՛մ ընդունել զմահ, կամ գնալ յԱյրարատայ, եւ արձակել ի քէն զուստերս նախարարացդ:
| 22:12 Now you must choose either to receive death or to leave Ayrarat and send away from you the sons of the princes. ’’:

22:13 Զայս լուեալ Գնելոյ` արար զհրամանս արքայի եւ գնաց յԱղիովիտ եւ յԱռբերանի:
| 22:13 When Gnel heard this he obeyed the king’s commands and went to Aḷiovit and Aṙberan:

22:14 Բայց Տիրան հաւն նորա պատգամս խիստս յղեաց առ որդի իւր Արշակ. վասն որոյ հեղձամահ եղեւ յիւրոց սենեկապետաց ի հրամանէ արքայի ի գաղտնիս, եւ ի նմին աւանի Կուաշ թաղեցաւ, ոչ արժանի եղեալ հարցն գերեզմանաց. թէ արդեաւք զփոխարէնսն Դանիելի առնն Աստուծոյ հատոյց, որով չափով չափեաց` չափեալ եղեւ ըստ Գրոց:
| 22:14 But Tiran his grandfather addressed severe remonstrances to his son Arshak, for which he was secretly strangled by his own chamberlains at the king’s command. He was buried in that same town of Kuash, being unworthy of the tombs of his fathers. For justly he paid amends for the man of God Daniel, being measured by the measure with which he had measured, according to the Scriptures:
