23:1 Դարձեալ խանդալ Արշակայ ընդ Գնելոյ եւ սպանանել զնա:
| 23:1 Arshak is again envious of Gnel and murders him:

23:2 Ապա ելանէ արքայ զթիկամբք Մասեաց առնել որսս յիւրում սիրեցեալ գաւառին ի Կոգայովտի. եւ եղեալ որս սաստիկ` ուրախացեալ Արշակ ի գինիս պարծէր, ոչ այլոյ ուրուք ի թագաւորաց նախ քան զնա մեռանել այնչափ բազմութիւն երէոց ի միում ժամու:
| 23:2 Then the king went out behind Masis to hunt in his own beloved province of Kogayovit. The prey was so abundant that when Arshak became happy in his cups, he boasted that no other king before him had caught such a multitude of beasts in a single hour:

23:3 Աստանաւր դարձեալ նորոգեն զնենգութիւնն Տիրիթ եւ Վարդան, ասելով, Գնելոյ բազում երէս քան զայն ունել ընդ նոյն աւուրս յիւրում լերինն, որ Շահապիվանն անուանի, որ ի մայրենի հաւոյ իւրոյ Գնելոյ Գնունւոյ հասեալ էր ցնա:
| 23:3 Here Tirit’ and Vardan again renewed their deceit, saying that Gnel had caught many more beasts than that in the same days on his own mountain, called Shahapivan, which had come to him from his maternal grandfather Gnel Gnuni:

23:4 Վասն որոյ առաքէ առ նա հրովարտակ այսպիսի:

23:6 Արշակ արքայ Հայոց մեծաց, Գնելոյ իմում որդւոյ խնդալ:
| 23:6 Arshak, king of Greater Armenia, to Gnel my son, greetings:

23:7 Տեսցե՛ս տեղիս քաջերէս ի լերինդ Ծաղկաց զպարկացիր ջրով, եւ պատրաստեսցես. զի եկեալ մեր` ըստ արժանեաց թագաւորականաց հանդիպեսցուք որսոց:
| 23:7 Seek out the regions most abundant in game on the mountain of Tsaḷik that are wooded and watered and make ready so that when we come, we may find a hunt worthy of kings:

23:8 Եւ երագ զհետ հրովարտակին երթեալ Արշակ` խորհէր, եթէ ոչ ըստ հրամանին գտցէ արարեալ Գնելոյ, պատճառս ի վերայ եդեալ, իբր թէ չարակնեաց զուրախանալն արքայի` կապեսցէ զնա:
| 23:8 Arshak arrived soon after the letter, reckoning that if he did not find that Gnel had acted according to his command he would have a pretext to arrest him on the grounds that he had begrudged the king’s pleasure:

23:9 Այլ իբրեւ ետես, զոր չէր երբէք տեսեալ զայնպիսի պատրաստութիւն որսոց եւ բազմութիւն երէոց, խոցեալ խորհրդովք նախանձու եւ կասկածանաց` հրամայեաց նոյն Վարդանայ ի նմին որսին սպանանել զԳնէլ, որպէս թէ ընդ խաբս ինչ վրիպակաւ, երէոյ կամելով ձգել` նմա պատահեաց նետն:
| 23:9 But when he saw that he had never seen such preparations for the hunt and such a multitude of game, he was pricked by thoughts of envy and suspicion and ordered the same Vardan on that hunt to kill Gnel, as if accidentally, when he wished to shoot game, the arrow had struck him by mistake:

23:10 Որոյ առեալ զայսպիսի հրաման` վաղվաղակի կատարէ, ոչ այնչափ յաղագս հրամանի թագաւորին, քան թէ վասն կամացն Տիրիթայ իւրոյ սիրելւոյն:
| 23:10 He undertook this command and immediately carried it out, not so much because of the king’s order as because of the desire of his friend Tirit’:

23:11 Իսկ Արշակայ հանդերձ նախարարաւքն իջուցեալ ի դաշտն Աղիովտի զդին Գնելոյ թաղեաց յարքունական քաղաքին Զարիշատի. ի չքմեղս եղեալ` կոծ մեծ առնէ:
| 23:11 Then Arshak with his princes brought Gnel’s body down to the plain of Aḷiovit and buried it in the royal city of Zarishat, and as if innocent made great lamentation:
