29:1 Յաղագս պատերազմին Արշակայ ընդ նախարարս իւր, եւ վտարանդի երթալոյն Պապայ ի Բիւզանդիոն:
| 29:1 Concerning Arshak’s war against his nobles, and Pap’s going as a hostage to Byzantium:

29:2 Դարձեալ յարեաւ խռովութիւն Շապհոյ ի նոյն ազգաց, եւ խաղաղութիւնն ի Յոյնս շրջեցաւ, ըստ այնմ` թէ փոխարկեալ միմեանց փոխարինին. սոցա խաղաղութիւն ի նոցա խռովութեանն, եւ նոցա խաղաղութիւն ի սոցա խռովութեանն, որ վախճան միոյն` միւսոյն լինին սկզբունք:
| 29:2 Again trouble arose for Shapuh from the same nations while peace was forged with the Greeks, according to the saying “ taking each other’s places they were changed”: this side’s peace for that side’s disturbance, and then that side’s peace for this side’s disturbance. What was the end for one was the beginning for the other:

29:3 Քանզի հիւանդացեալ Վաղենտիանու ի բերդին որ կոչի Բերգիտիոն` վճարի ի կենցաղոյս, եղբաւրն փոխանորդելով զտէրութիւնն` Վաղեսի. յետ բարեբախտագոյն պատերազմաւ Գթացն յաղթութեամբ դարձի, նոյն հետայն առաքէ զաւրս ի Միջագետս ի Հայս, յաղագս տուելոյ զաւրուն յաւգնութիւն Շապհոյ:
| 29:3 Valentinian fell ill in the castle called Bergition and died; his brother Valens succeeded to the throne. After returning victoriously from a very successful war against the Goths, he straightway sent an army to Mesopotamia and Armenia to give armed support to Shapuh:

29:4 Բայց Արշակայ եկեալ Վրացի գնդաւ` ժողովէ զսակաւս եւ յիւր մտերմաց, եւ տայ պատերազմ ընդ նախարարսն ընդ այնոսիկ, խնդրելով զվրէժ ձեռակերտին իւրոյ Արշակաւանու:
| 29:4 But Arshak, coming with a Georgian force, gathered his few supporters and offered battle to those princes, seeking vengeance for his city of Arshakavan:

29:5 Միաբանեալ եւ նոցա առաջնորդութեամբ Ներսեհի որդւոյ Կամսարայ, ընդդիմանան Արշակայ պատերազմաւ:
| 29:5 They united under the leadership of Nerseh, son of Kamsar, and opposed Arshak in war:
|
29:6 Եւ հզաւր մարտի եղելոյ` բազումք յերկաքանչիւրոց կողմանցն անկան. քանզի արք դիպեալ արանց` ոչ ոք զպարտութիւն յանձն առնոյր:
| 29:6 A fierce battle took place, and many from both sides fell, for heroes were facing heroes and no one would accept defeat:

29:7 Եւ մինչ դեռ նոքա յայսմ էին, հասանեն եւ զաւրքն կայսերականք:
| 29:7 While they were still in this condition the imperial army arrived:
|
29:8 Ապա տեսեալ Արշակայ, թէ թշնամի են նորա Շապուհ եւ Վաղէս եւ իւր նախարարքն, տարակուսեալ յամենեցունց` յղէ առ մեծն Ներսէս բազում անգամ աղաչելով. խոստանայր դառնալ յամենայն ճանապարհաց չարաց, եւ լինել ըստ կամաց նորա, եւ ապաշխարել ի քուրձ եւ ի մոխիր. միայն զի նա եկեսցէ եւ արասցէ խաղաղութիւն, եւ թափեսցէ զնա ի ձեռաց հզաւրացն Յունաց:
| 29:8 Then, when Arshak saw that he had as enemies Shapuh and Valens and his own nobles and that he was abandoned by everyone, he sent repeated entreaties to Saint Nersēs, promising to turn from all ways of wickedness, to act according to his will, and to repent in sackcloth and ashes, provided only that he would come and make peace and save him from the hands of the powerful Greeks:

29:9 Սապէս եւ ի նախարարացն ստէպ ստէպ զմիմեանց զկնի գային մաղթանք նորին աղագաւ. նա եւ եպիսկոպոսացն ժողովեալ` պաղատանս մատուցանէին, զի մի՛ անփոյթ արասցէ զկորստենէ իւրոյ վիճակին:
| 29:9 Similar supplications from the nobles followed each other thick and fast to the same effect. Even the bishops assembled and implored him not to be indifferent to the destruction of his own see:

29:10 Ապա հաւանեալ մեծն Ներսէս` եկն ի մէջ նոցա, եւ արար խաղաղութիւն, լսելով նմա թագաւորին եւ նախարարացն, բայց ի նահապետէն Արծրունեաց Մեհրուժանայ եւ ի նորին քեռառնէ Վահանայ Մամիկոնենէ, որք անլսող եղեալ` ապստամբեալ գնացին առ Շապուհ:
| 29:10 Then Nersēs the Great acceded, came between them, and made peace. Both the king and the nobles obeyed him with the exception of the prince of the Artsrunik’, Mehrujan, and his brother- in- law Vahan Mamikonian, who paid no heed but rebelliously went to Shapuh:

29:11 Իսկ այլ ամենայն նախարարքն հաստատեցին ուխտ, զի յայնմ հետէ թագաւորն վարեսցի ուղղութեամբ, եւ նոքա ծառայեսցեն միամտութեամբ. եւ այս ի մէջ նոցա:
| 29:11 But all the other nobles established a covenant that thenceforth the king would rule justly and they would serve him sincerely. This was agreed between them:
|
29:12 Բայց եւ առ զաւրսն Յունաց երթեալ մեծին Ներսիսի, աղաչէր մի՛ ինչ աշխարհիս մեղանչել, այլ առնուլ զհարկսն եւ զորդի Արշակայ զՊապ հանդերձ ամենայն նախարարացն որդւովք պատանդս, եւ դառնալ:
| 29:12 But Nersēs the Great, going to the Greek army, begged them not to harm our country but to take the tribute and Arshak’s son Pap with all the nobles’ sons as hostages, and return:

29:13 Որում լսող եղեալ քաղցր եւ մեծն Թէոդորոս զաւրավար` դառնայ առ կայսր հանդերձ պատանդաւքն, ընդ իւր տանելով զմեծն Ներսէս թղթով Արշակայ, որ ունէր աւրինակ զայս:
| 29:13 The kind and noble General Theodosius agreed to this and returned to the emperor with the hostages, taking with him Nersēs the Great with a letter of Arshak’s, which ran as follows:

| 29:15 Arshak, king of Greater Armenia, and the princes of the Armenian nation, to our lord the Emperor Valens Augustus and your son Gratian, greetings:

29:16 Մի՛ դիցէ ինքնակալդ ի մտի, եթէ առ ատել զձեզ նշկահեցաք, կամ իբրեւ զհզաւրս ինչ զմեզ վարկանելով` արձակեցաք գունդ հինից յերկիրդ Յունաց. այլ մեծի խռովութեանդ, որ ի ձերում միջի շարժեցաւ, գիտակ եղեալ` երկուցեալ ի Շապհոյ, եթէ ոչ ոք թափեսցէ զմեզ ի ձեռաց նորա` աւգնեցաք նմա դոյզն գնդաւ:
| 29:16 May your imperial majesty not think that we have rebelled for hatred of you, or that supposing ourselves to have some strength we have sent a marauding band into your Greek empire. But being aware of the great trouble that has broken out among you, and fearful of Shapuh unless someone saves us from his hands, we have helped him with a small force:

29:17 Այլ ոչ ես ինքն Արշակ եկի ընդ նմա, զմիամտութիւն ընդ ձեզ պահելով. վասն որոյ աւերեալ գերեաց զաշխարհս մեր, մինչեւ զոսկերս անգամ հարցն բրեաց ի գերեզմանաց:
| 29:17 But I, Arshak, did not myself come with it; rather I preserved fidelity toward you. For that reason, he ruined our country and took it captive, even digging up the bones of our fathers from their tombs:
|
29:18 Եւ արդ` հաւատացեալ ձեր եղելոցս` զառաջին սէրն առ մեզ հաստատուն պահեցէ՛ք, եւ մեք առ ձեզ զմտերիմն հատուսցուք ծառայութիւն:
| 29:18 So accept what we did and keep firm your earlier love for us, and we shall pay you devoted service:
|
29:19 Իսկ Վաղէս ո՛չ զթուղթն ընթերցաւ, եւ ոչ զմեծն Ներսէս ետես. այլ բացէ ի բաց արտասահմանել զնա հրամայէ, եւ սրոյ զամենայն պատանդսն մատնել:
| 29:19 But Valens neither read the letter nor saw Nersēs the Great. Instead he ordered him to be exiled and all the hostages to be put to the sword:
