36:1 Անցք ընդ մեզ չարեացն ի Մեհրուժանայ, եւ թագաւորել Հայոց Պապայ:
| 36:1 The misfortunes brought upon us by Mehrujan, and the reign of Pap over Armenia:

36:2 Յետ մահուանն Արշակայ գումարեաց Շապուհ զաւր բազում ի ձեռն Մեհրուժանայ, եւ արձակեաց ի Հայս, ի նա հաւատալով զաշխարհս:
| 36:2 After the death of Arshak, Shapuh gathered a large army under Mehrujan and dispatched it to Armenia, entrusting the land to him:

36:3 Եւ տուեալ նմա կին զքոյր իւր զՈրմիզդուխտ, եւ հրովարտակս բազում շինից եւ դաստակերտաց ի Պարսից աշխարհին, եւ խոստացաւ տալ նմա զՀայոց թագաւորութիւնն, միայն թէ զնախարարսն նուաճելով` ի դէն մազդեզանց զաշխարհս դարձուսցէ:
| 36:3 He gave him as wife his own sister Ormizdukht and also edicts bestowing on him many villages and estates in Persia. He also promised to give him the throne of Armenia, provided that he subdued the princes and converted the land to the Mazdaean religion:

36:4 Որոյ յանձն առեալ եւ եկեալ, եւ զբազումս ի նախարարաց կանանց կալեալ` ի բերդս բերդս տայր պահել, զդարձ արանցն յուսալով:
| 36:4 This he undertook, and on arrival seized many of the princes’ wives and had them kept in various castles, hoping for the conversion of their husbands:

36:5 Եւ զամենայն կարգ քրիստոնէութեան ջանայր խափանել:
| 36:5 He attempted to abolish all the institutions of Christianity:

36:6 Զեպիսկոպոսս եւ զքահանայս հարկաց պատճառաւ կապեալ` յերկիրն Պարսից տայր տանել:
| 36:6 The bishops and priests he cast into bonds on the pretext of tribute and had them sent to Persia:

36:7 Եւ զորս միանգամ գիրս գտանէր` այրէր, եւ հրաման տայր մի՛ ուսանել զդպրութիւն յունարէն, այլ զպարսիկ, եւ մի՛ ոք իշխեսցէ յոյն խաւսել կամ թարգմանել. այսպիսի ինչ պատճառաւ, զի ամենեւին մի՛ լիցի Հայոց ընդ Յունաց ծանաւթութիւն եւ հաղորդութիւն սիրոյ, այլ ճշմարիտ` խափանել զքրիստոնէութեան ուսումն. զի յայնժամ գիր դպրութեան Հայոց չեւ եւս էր լեալ, եւ յունականաւն վարէին եկեղեցւոյ կարգք:
| 36:7 Whatever books he found he burned, and he ordered that Greek letters should not be studied but only Persian, and that no one should speak or translate Greek, on the pretext that it was to prevent the Armenians from having any acquaintance or friendly relations with the Greeks. But in reality, it was to destroy the teaching of Christianity, for at that time the Armenians did not yet have a script and the church services were conducted in Greek:

36:8 Արդ` իբրեւ լուաւ մեծն Ներսէս զչարիսն ամենայն, որ հասին ի վերայ Հայոց, եւ զմահն Արշակայ` աղաչեաց զինքնակալն Թէոդոս, խնդրելով ի նմանէ աւգնականութիւն:
| 36:8 Now when Nersēs the Great heard of all the evils that had befallen Armenia and of the death of Arshak, he beseeched Emperor Theodosius and requested his aid:

36:9 Եւ թագաւորեցուցանէ զՊապ որդի Արշակայ. եւ ընդ նմա գումարեաց զաւր բազում ի ձեռն քաջ ստրատելատին Տերենտիանոսի:
| 36:9 The latter made Pap, Arshak’s son, king and gathered a large army for him under the valiant general Terentius:

36:10 Եւ մեծին Ներսիսի առեալ զամենայն նախարարսն, որք կամակից էին ընդ տէրութիւնն Պապայ եւ որք ոչ, եւ զապրեալ Կամսարականն Սպանդարատ` սոցա միաբանութեամբ ածէ զՊապ յաշխարհս Հայոց:
| 36:10 Nersēs the Great took all the princes, both those who willingly accepted the rule of Pap and those who did not, and also the surviving Kamsarakan Spandarat, and in their company brought Pap to Armenia:

36:11 Եւ եկեալ գտանեն զամբարիշտն Մեհրուժան պետացեալ կալեալ զերկիրս Հայոց. եւ հալածական արարեալ` յինքեանս թափեն զաշխարհս:
| 36:11 When they arrived, they found the impious Mehrujan master of the land of Armenia. They expelled him and brought the country under their own control:

36:12 Բայց Մեհրուժան հրամայէ պայկացն` զբերդիցն պարսպաց կախել զկանայս նախարարացն, մինչեւ մեռցին. եւ թողուլ նոյնպէս ի կախաղանին զդիակունսն, զի լուծեալ անկցին` գէշ կերակուր լինել թռչնոց:
| 36:12 But Mehrujan ordered the garrisons to hang the princes’ wives from the walls of the castles until they died and to leave their corpses hanging on the gibbet so that they might disintegrate and putrefy and become carrion for birds:
