37:1 Յաղագս մեծի պատերազմին` որ եղեւ ի Ձիրաւ, եւ սատակման ամբարշտին Մեհրուժանայ:
| 37:1 Concerning the great battle that took place at Dzirav and the death of the impious Mehrujan:

37:2 Ազգ արարեալ Մեհրուժանայ յերկիրն Խորասանայ առ Շապուհ զամենայն աւգնականութիւն Թէոդոսի զոր արար առ Պապ` ելանէ հրաման ի Շապհոյ` ամենայն զաւրացն Պարսից երթալ ընդ Մեհրուժանայ ի Հայս ի պատերազմ:
| 37:2 After Mehrujan had informed Shapuh in the land of Khorasan of all the assistance that Theodosius had given to Pap, the command came from Shapuh that all the Persian forces should march with Mehrujan into Armenia for war:

37:3 Դոյնպէս ազգէն ինքնակալին Թէոդոսի Պապ եւ Տերենտիանոս զՇապհոյ, թէ ամենայն զաւրացն հրամայեաց ելանել ի վերայ մեր, բայց ի դրանկացն:
| 37:3 Similarly Pap and Terentius warned Emperor Theodosius that Shapuh had commanded all his forces to march against us, with the exception of his palace guard:

37:4 Ապա եւ Աւգոստոսն Թէոդոս հրամայեաց Ադդէի կոմսին մեծի երթալ յաւգնականութիւն Պապայ, առնուլ զամենայն զաւրս Յունաց, ոչ զոք թողուլ` զոր ոչ առցէ. այլ եւ զհետեւակս պահապանս քաղաքացն, որք զմետաքսեայսն ունէին զվիշապս:
| 37:4 Then the Augustus Theodosius commanded the great Count Addē to go to Pap’s help, to take all the Greek forces, and not to leave anyone behind - even the infantry garrisons of the cities who carried the silk dragons:

37:5 Եւ խմբեցաւ պատերազմն ի դաշտին որ կոչի Ձիրաւ, եւ մատեան ճակատ առ ճակատ:
| 37:5 The battle was waged on the plain called Dzirav, and the battle lines confronted each other:

37:6 Եւ մանկունք քաջ նախարարացն Հայոց, ինքնակամ նահատակեալք, մտին ի մէջ ճակատուցն, առաջնորդութեամբ սպարապետին իւրեանց Սմբատայ ասպետի, որդւոյ Բագարատայ, որ յազգէն Բագրատունեաց:
| 37:6 The youth among the valiant Armenian princes, willingly fighting like champions, came forward between the lines under the leadership of General Smbat the aspet, son of Bagarat, who was from the Bagratuni family:

37:7 Ելին եւ ի զաւրացն Պարսից համատիք նոցա, եւ խաղացին ի մէջ ճակատուցն. եւ ցիրք ընդ ցիրս լինէին:
| 37:7 Their contemporaries from the Persian army also came forward and rushed into the space between the lines:

37:8 Եւ ի դառնալ մանկանցն Պարսից, ընդ հուպ դարձեալ մերոցն զհետ նոցա, աւրինակ իմն որպէս փոթորիկ յանտառէ տերեւաթափ, այնպէս երագ յերիվարացն առեալ նիզակաւք, դի ցուրտ յերկիր ընկենուին, ոչ կարելով նոցա յիւրեանց ճակատն մտանել:
| 37:8 The two groups mingled together. And when the Persian youth turned back, ours followed them closely. And just as a storm blows the leaves from the trees of the forest, so they quickly dismounted from their horses with their lances and cut them as cold corpses to the ground before they could reach their own line:

37:9 Իսկ յորժամ պարսիկքն զմերն շրջէին` նոքա ի վահանափակն Յունաց իբր յամուր քաղաք մտանէին, առ ոչինչ վնասելոյ:
| 37:9 When the Persians began to surround ours, they withdrew behind the protective shields of the Greeks, as into a fortified city, and suffered no harm:

37:10 Քանզի այնպէս արար Գորգոնոս իշխան հետեւակ զաւրուն, իբր պարսպաւ պատեաց վահանաւք զճակատն Պապայ:
| 37:10 For Gorgonos, general of the infantry, surrounded Pap’s line with shields as with a wall:

37:11 Քանզի զաւրքն Յունաց վառեալ էին ի զէնս ոսկւոյ եւ արծաթոյ, եւ երիվարք նոցա նոյնպէս զարդու, եւ էր տեսանել իբրեւ զպարիսպ ինչ, յորոց յոլովք ի ջղեայ եւ ի կաշեայ պահպանակաց զգեստուն զկարծրութեան վիմաց բերէին երեւոյթս. եւ ի վերայ նոցա անխալամ գէսք նշանք արձակեալք իբր զսաղարթս ինչ հովանաւոր ծառոց:
| 37:11 The Greek troops were armed with weapons of gold and silver, and their horses were similarly accoutred. One could see as it were a wall: most of them, dressed in armor of chains and leather, appeared as firm as stone. Above them Hew standards of headless hair, like the foliage of shady trees:

37:12 Բայց զվիշապացն մանուածս, ահագին բերանաբացութեամբ ուռուցեալ ի փչմանէ աւդոյն, ոչ ինչ ուրեք կարեմ նմանեցուցանել, այլ միայն իբրեւ զլեառն ինչ ադամանդեայ խոնարհիլ ի ծով եւ բովանդակ ճակատն Յունաց ի պարսկական զաւրսն:
| 37:12 The rippling of the dragons with fearsome open mouths swollen by the blowing of the wind I can compare to nothing other than a mountain of adamant descending to the sea - such was the entire Greek line escending on the Persian army:

37:13 Քանզի եւ զնոսա էր տեսանել իբրեւ զհզաւր ինչ գետ առ ի կողմն ի լայն ծաւալեալ. արդարեւ զջրոյ գոյն զրահազգեստացն բերէր տեսութիւն:
| 37:13 For one could see them like a powerful river spreading out to either side; truly the appearance of these armed warriors was like water:

37:14 Արդ` իբրեւ ետես մեծն Ներսէս զայն ամենայն` ել նա ի կատար լերինն Նպատայ. եւ ամբարձ զձեռս իւր յերկինս, անխոնարհելի պահելով ի խնդրուածս, հանգոյն նախամարգարէին Մովսիսի, մինչեւ պարտեցաւ երկրորդն Ամաղէկ:
| 37:14 Now when Nersēs the Great saw all this, he went up to the summit of the mountain Npat. Lifting his hands to heaven, he kept them up in supplication like the first prophet Moses until the second Amalek was defeated:

37:15 Իսկ ի ծագել արեգականն ընդդէմ մերոց զաւրացն, ի պղնձապատ վահանացն նշոյլք զլերամբքն փայլատակէին իբրեւ յամպոյ մեծէ, եւ ի նոցանէ ի դուրս ոստչէին ի մերոց նախարարացն քաջ զրահաւորք` որպէս փայլատականց ճառագայթք. յորոց միայն ի տեսութենէն զանգիտեալ պարսկական գունդն, սակաւ ինչ եւ մերն, վասն ոչ կարել հայել ընդդէմ արեգականն ծագման:
| 37:15 When the sun rose opposite our army the reflections from their bronze shields glittered on the mountains like lightning from a great cloud. Out front the troops like rays of lightning rushed the bravest armed men among our princes. Merely at the sight of them the Persian host lost heart, and ours too a little for they were unable to see into the rising sun:

37:16 Իսկ ի բաղխել զմիմեանս` եղեւ ի վերայ հովանի ամպոյ, եւ հողմ սաստիկ ի մերոցն կուսէ ընդդէմ պարսկականին փչեալ:
| 37:16 Their mutual encounter took place under the shadow of a cloud, and a stiff breeze blew from our side toward that of the Persians:

37:17 Եւ ի խառնակել մարտին` պատահէ Կամսարականն Սպանդարատ խմբի մեծի, յորում էր քաջն Շերգիր Ղեկաց արքայ, զգլուխ միջին գնդին պնդութեամբ զտեղի ճակատուն կալեալ:
| 37:17 When battle was joined Spandarat Kamsarakan encountered a large detachment in which was the brave Shergir, king of the Ḷek, firmly holding his place at the head of the army’s center:

37:18 Եւ յարձակեալ Սպանդարատ, եւ հերձեալ զխումբն, որպէս զշանթահար յերկիր կործանէր զքաջն, եւ զխումբն պտուտեալ` ի փախուստ դարձուցանէր:
| 37:18 Spandarat attacked, cut through the enemy force, smote the brave warrior to the ground as if he had been struck by a thunderbolt, and turning the detachment around put it to flight:

37:19 Եւ այսպէս ի վերին աւգնականութենէն զաւրացեալ առ հասարակ զաւրքն Յունաց եւ Հայոց, դիակամբք թշնամեացն լցին զդաշտն ամենայն, եւ զմնացորդսն ամենայն ի փախուստ շրջեալ հալածեցին:
| 37:19 Thus, strengthened by help from above, the Greek and Armenian armies in concert filled the entire plain with corpses of the enemy and pursued all the fleeing survivors:

37:20 Ընդ որս եւ զՈւռնայր Աղուանից արքայ, խոցոտեալ ի Մուշեղայ որդւոյ Վասակայ Մամիկոնենի, հանին ի պատերազմէն:
| 37:20 Among these was Urnayr, king of the Aḷuank’; he had been wounded by Musheḷ, son of Vasak Mamikonian, and they removed him from the battle:

37:21 Բայց ամբարշտին Մեհրուժանայ վիրաւորեալ ձին` ոչ կարաց երագել ընդ փախստեայսն. որում աճապարեալ հասանէ սպարապետն հայոց Սմբատ, եւ զորս ընդ նմայն էին կոտորեալ` ձերբակալ առնէ զվատշուէրն յեզեր շամբին Կոգայովտի:
| 37:21 But because the impious Mehrujan’s horse was wounded, he was unable to make a quick escape with the fugitives. The Armenian general Smbat quickly caught up with him, slew his companions, and took the villain prisoner at the edge of the fen of Kogayovit:

37:22 Եւ զմտաւ ածեալ, թէ գուցէ թափիցէ զնա մեծն Ներսէս, այնորիկ աղագաւ ոչ ածէ ի բանակն. այլ զտեղեաւքն գտանէ պատրաստական առ ի կորուստ ամբարշտին զոմանս խորանաւորս հուր լուցեալ, եւ շամփուր երկաթի` միս խորովելոյ. զոր ջեռուցեալ, կրկնեաց բոլորեալ որպէս պսակ, եւ յոյժ արտաշէկ արարեալ, ասէ. «Պսակեմ զքեզ, Մեհրուժան, քանզի ի խնդիր էիր թագաւորել Հայոց. եւ ինձ ասպետիս պարտ է զքեզ պսակել ըստ սովորական իշխանութեան իմոյ հայրենեաց:
| 37:22 And thinking that perhaps Nersēs the Great might free him, he therefore did not take him to the camp but found at the spot, opportunely for the destruction of the impious one, some people living in tents who had lit a fire and an iron spit for roasting meat. This he heated, bent into a circle like a crown, and making it red hot said: “ I crown you, Mehrujan, because you sought to be king of Armenia; and it is my privilege as aspet to crown you according to the customary right of my ancestors:

37:23 Եւ մինչ դեռ տաքն էր իբրեւ զհուր` եդ ի գլուխն Մեհրուժանայ, եւ այնպէս սատակեցաւ չարն:
| 37:23 And while it was still red hot, he placed it on Mehrujan’s head, and thus the wicked one was killed:

37:24 Եւ յայնմ հետէ խաղաղեցաւ երկիրն, ընդ ձեռամբ Պապայ նուաճեալ:
| 37:24 Thenceforth the land was peaceful and subject to Pap’s rule:
