38:1 Եթէ ո՛րպէս Պապայ դեղ մահու արբուցեալ սրբոյն Ներսիսի` ելոյծ ի կենցաղոյս:
| 38:1 How Pap gave Saint Nersēs a mortal poison to drink and deprived him of life:

38:2 Յետ սպառելոյ պատերազմացն եւ խաղաղանալոյ երկրիս, մեծն Ներսէս դնէր վկայութիւն ի մէջ արքային Պապայ եւ ի մէջ նախարարացն` գնալ յամենայն ճանապարհս արդարութեան, զի վկայեսցեն ըստ հաւատոց քրիստոնէութեան եւ գործքն. եւ զի արքայն մի՛ հաւրն իւրում նմանեսցի, անիրաւել եւ զրկել, այլ վարեսցի ուղղութեամբ, հայրաբար խնամովք առ նախարարսն. եւ նոքա մի՛ եւս յաւելցեն վտարանջել, նշկահելով զնա, այլ ծառայել միամտութեամբ:
| 38:2 When the wars were over and our land was peaceful, Nersēs the Great established a covenant between King Pap and the princes that they would walk in all the paths of justice so that their deeds would be in accordance with the Christian faith; that the king would not imitate his father in injustice and extortion but would rule uprightly, with fatherly care for the princes; while they would no more rebel and scorn him but would serve him sincerely:

38:3 Յայնժամ արքայն Պապ դարձոյց ի Կամսարականն Սպանդարատ զամենայն ինչ` զոր յափշտակեալ էր հաւր իւրոյ Արշակայ, զգաւառն Շիրակայ եւ զԱրշարունեաց, որ լեալ էին ազգին Կամսարականաց, ոչ իբրեւ զանիրաւ ագահութիւն հաւր իւրոյ Արշակայ, այլ իբրեւ պարգեւս ընդ վաստակոց քաջին Սպանդարատայ, որ սպան զՂեկաց արքայն:
| 38:3 Then King Pap restored to Spandarat Kamsarakan everything that his father Arshak had seized from him: the provinces of Shirak and Arsharunik’, which had belonged to the Kamsarakan family, not as avaricious confiscations of his father Arshak, but as rewards for the services of the valiant Spandarat who had killed the king of the Ḷek:

38:4 Այլ եւ զայլոց նախարարացն դարձոյց զզրկանս, եւ յոյժ անընչասիրաբար ցուցանէր զիւր ախորժակսն, եւ առատաբար կեայր:
| 38:4 He also restored to the other princes what had been confiscated and showed that he had no pleasure at all in avarice but lived in a liberal fashion:

38:5 Բայց զի ամաւթալի ախտիւ զազրագործ էր, եւ յանդիմանեալ կշտամբէր ի մեծէն Ներսիսէ, ընդ ակամբ հայէր ի նա, խորհելով չարիս, եւ ոչ իշխէր յինքնակալէն Թէոդոսէ յայտնի ինչ առնել նմա չարի. դեղ մահու գաղտնի արբուցեալ սրբոյն Ներսիսի` ելոյծ ի կենցաղոյս. որ կալաւ զաթոռ եպիսկոպոսութեանն ամս երեսուն եւ չորս:
| 38:5 But because he was debauched with a shameful passion for which he was reproached and blamed by Nersēs the Great, he regarded him with an evil eye and hatched a wicked plot. He was unable to do him any harm openly because of the Emperor Theodosius, so he secretly gave Saint Nersēs a deadly poison to drink and deprived him of life. He had held the episcopal throne for thirty- four years:

38:6 Եւ փոխեալ յաշխարհէս երանելին Ներսէս ի գաւառին Եկեղեաց, ի գեաւղն որ կոչի Խախ, բարձեալ զմարմին նորա արքային Պապայ` թաղեաց ի Թիլն աւանին, զանխլաբար ունելով զեղեալսն:
| 38:6 The blessed Nersēs departed this world in the province of Ekeḷeats’ in the village called Khakh. King Pap removed his body and buried it in the town of T’il, keeping secret what had really happened:
