39:1 Յաղագս աթոռակալութեանն Սահակայ, եւ սպանմանն Պապայ ի Թէոդոսէ:
| 39:1 Concerning Shahak’s succession to the episcopal throne and the murder of Pap by Theodosius:

39:2 Ապա տեսեալ թագաւորին Պապայ սգացեալ զամենայն Հայս ի վերայ երանելւոյն Ներսիսի, հարկաւորեալ յուզեաց եւ եգիտ զոմն յազգէ եւ ի ժառանգութենէ Աղբիանոսի, որում անուն Սահակ կոչէր, ոչ հեռի ի գովութենէ. զոր կացոյց փոխանակ Ներսիսի առանց մեծի արքեպիսկոպոսին Կեսարու. որ կալաւ զաթոռն ամս չորս:
| 39:2 Then King Pap, seeing all Armenia in mourning for the blessed Nersēs, under pressure sought out and found a member of the family and descent of Aḷbianos called Shahak, who was not unworthy of praise, and set him in Nersēs’ place without the permission of the great archbishop of Caesarea. He held the throne for four years:

39:3 Բայց Պապայ լուեալ, եթէ մեծն Թէոդոս ել ի Բիւզանդիոյ ի Հռովմ կոյս, եւ մտեալ ի Թեսաղոնիկ հանդերձ սպայիւն, եւ յաղագս իջավանին եղեւ խռովութիւն ընդ նա եւ ընդ քաղաքացիսն, եւ մարտ խռովութեան, եւ յաղթեալ ինքնակալին` սատակեաց ի քաղաքացեացն արս հնգետասան հազար:
| 39:3 But Pap heard that Theodosius the Great had gone from Byzantium toward Rome and that when he entered Thessalonica with his army, there had occurred an altercation between him and the citizens over quarters, which led to a battle; the emperor was victorious and slaughtered fifteen thousand of the populaces:

39:4 Զայս լուեալ Պապայ, վարկուցեալ յերկարել այսպիսւոյ խռովութեան` արհամարհեալ նշկահեաց. եւ գրգռեալ զնա կորստեանն իւրոյ` հալածեաց զՏերենտիանոս հանդերձ զաւրաւքն, եւ սկսաւ պատրաստել ի պատերազմ:
| 39:4 When Pap heard this, he thought that such a disturbance would last a long time so he scorned Theodosius and rebelled. And provoking him to his own ruin, he expelled Terentius with his army and began to prepare for war:

39:5 Եւ հասեալ հրաման ի մեծէն Թէոդոսէ, ընդ կրունկն դարձաւ քաջն Տերենտիանոս:
| 39:5 On orders from Theodosius the Great, the valiant Terentius turned back:

39:6 Եւ ըստ իւրում պատահման բախտին յանկարծակի անկեալ ի բանակն, զոմանս կոտորեալ սրով, եւ զոմանս փախստեայս արարեալ. ուր սաստկապէս նահատակեալ քաջութեամբ ընդդիմամարտ լինէր Գնէլ նահապետ Անձեւացեաց եւ սպարապետ Պապայ արեւելեան զաւրուն. զոր յաղթողին Տերենտիանոսի իւրովի արարեալ սուսերաւ կիսակտուր զգլուխ նորա, ըմբռնեաց զթագաւորն Պապ:
| 39:6 And by a stroke of luck he unexpectedly fell on Pap’s camp, slaughtering some with the sword and putting others to flight. There Gnel, prince of the Andzevats’ik’ and general of Pap’s eastern army, fought fiercely and put up a brave resistance. But the victorious Terentius himself split his head in two with the sword and seized King Pap:

39:7 Եւ Պապայ յաղերս աղաչանաց անկեալ, զի մի՛ մեռցի, այլ յանդիման լինել արքայի. եւ քաջին Տերենտիանոսի գթացեալ` շնորհեաց նմա զմաղթանսն:
| 39:7 Pap implored and begged him that he not be killed but taken before the emperor. The brave Terentius took pity and granted his request:

39:8 Եւ երկաթեղէն կապանաւք երթեալ առաջի մեծին Թէոդոսի` ըստ իւրում անզգամութեանն սակրով վճարի, թագաւորեալ ամս եաւթն:
| 39:8 In iron bonds he went before Theodosius the Great, but for his insolence was put to death with the axe. He had reigned for seven years:
