40:1 Յաղագս թագաւորելոյն Վարազդատայ, եւ կապանաց նորին:
| 40:1 Concerning the reign of Varazdat and his imprisonment:

40:2 Բայց Աւգոստոս բարեացապարտն Թէոդոս, որ ի մեծ, ի քսաներորդ ամին իւրում թագաւորեցոյց Հայոց փոխանակ Պապայ զՎարազդատ ոմն ի նմին տոհմէ Արշակունեաց:
| 40:2 But the well- deserving Augustus Theodosius, called the Great, in his twentieth year made king of Armenia in succession to Pap a certain Varazdat from the same Arsacid family:

40:3 Այս Վարազդատ էր տիովք մանուկ, սրտեայ, անձնեայ, ուժեղ, լի ամենայն գործովք արութեան, եւ յոյժ կորովի նետաձգութեամբ:
| 40:3 This Varazdat was young in years, spirited, personable, strong, full of all deeds of valor, and very expert at archery:

40:4 Որ ի ժամանակի ի փախստենէն Շապհոյ գնացեալ ի դուռն կայսեր նահատակեցաւ, նախ ի Պիսաս զբռնամարտիկսն յաղթելով. դարձեալ յԱրեգ քաղաքի Ելլադացւոց յաւր հասարակի կոտորեաց առիւծս, յորում փառս Ողիմպիայ խաղուն հանդիսի յըմբշամարտկացն երեւի եւ յարգի:
| 40:4 Earlier he had fled from Shapuh to the emperor’s court and had become a noted champion - first by winning the pugilistic contest at Pisa; and then at Heliopolis in Hellas at midday he had killed lions, for which he was praised and honored by the contestants at the Olympic games:

40:5 Այլ որ առ ազգին Ղանկուարտացն նորա արութիւնք քաջութեան` համարձակիմ ասել հաւասար սրբոյն Տրդատայ. քանզի հինգ նահատակս ի թշնամեացն ընդդէմ իւր յարձակեալ` ի վերայ իրերաց սպան սուսերաւ. եւ ի բերդ ինչ դիմեալ, ի վերայ պատուարին եաւթնեւտասն այր նետիւք հարեալ` վերուստ ի վայր հոսեաց միմեանց զկնի, իբր ի սաստիկ իմն մրրկէ վաղահասուկ թզենեաց:
| 40:5 And as for his valor and bravery against the nation of the Longobards, I am bold to say that he was the equal of Saint Trdat: for when five heroes from among the enemy attacked him, he killed them one after the other with the sword; and coming to some fortress he shot with arrows seventeen men on the wall, knocking them down one after the other like early- ripening fig trees [cf. Isa. 28:4] blown down by a violent storm:

40:6 Որ եկեալ թագաւորութեամբ յաշխարհս մեր ի յիսուն եւ հինգ ամին Շապհոյ, առաջին մարտին պատահեաց աւազակաց ոմանց Ասորւոց ի դժուարս Դարանաղւոյ, եւ փախստեայս արարեալ` հետամուտ լինէր:
| 40:6 He came as king to our country in the fifty- fifth year of Shapuh. In his first battle he encountered some Syrian brigands in the passes of Daranaḷi, and putting them to flight he pursued them closely:

40:7 Իսկ նոցա անցեալ ընդ նեղուցս կամրջին Եփրատայ` ընկեցին զփայտն զկնի իւրեանց. այլ նորա հասեալ` վազեաց զԵփրատաւ առաւել քան զղակոնացին Քիոնեայ վազսն քսան եւ երկուց կանգնոց չափ:
| 40:7 But they crossed the Euphrates by the bridge at a narrow point and threw down the planks behind them. However, when he came up, he jumped over the Euphrates, surpassing the long jump of twenty- two cubits by Chion the Laconian:

40:8 Եւ անդ էր տեսանել նոր զոմն Աքիլլեւս ընդ Սկամանդրոս գետ վազելով:
| 40:8 There one could see a new Achilles jumping over the Scamander River:

40:9 Յորմէ զարհուրեալ աւազակացն` զէնընկէց լինելով ի ձեռն եկին:
| 40:9 Terrified by this the brigands threw down their arms and surrendered:

40:10 Յաղագս որոյ արբեալ ի մանկութեանն արութիւնս, առ այսոքիւք եւ ի թագաւորութեանն ոչ հնազանդէր խրատու վերակացութեան զաւրացն Յունաց:
| 40:10 Therefore, as in his youth he had steeped himself in valiant deeds, likewise during his reign he did not heed the advice of the commanders of the Greek army:

40:11 Վասն որոյ առաքէ հրեշտակս առ Շապուհ, զի տացէ ի դստերաց իւրոց նմա կնութեան, եւ սա դարձուսցէ առ նա զաշխարհս Հայոց:
| 40:11 So he sent messengers to Shapuh saying that if he would give him one of his daughters to wife, he would restore to him the land of Armenia:

40:12 Զոր զգացեալ զաւրավարացն Յունաց, ազդ առնեն կայսեր:
| 40:12 When the Greek generals became aware of this, they warned the emperor:

40:13 Իսկ կայսրն Թէոդոս հրամայեաց զնա ունել, եթէ ոչ իւրովք կամաւք երթիցէ ի կոչ ինքնակալին:
| 40:13 Then Emperor Theodosius ordered him to be arrested if he did not come of his own will at the emperor’s summons:

40:14 Վասն որոյ հարկեալ երթայ կամաւք իւրովք, յուսացեալ ի սուտ հանել զԱւգոստոսն:
| 40:14 Therefore, under pressure, he went of his own will, hoping to deceive the Augustus:
|
40:15 Իսկ կայսրն եւ ոչ տեսութեան արժանի արար, այլ երկաթի կապաւք ետ տանել զնա ի Թուղիս կղզի Ովկիանու. որ թագաւորեաց ամս չորս:
| 40:15 But the emperor did not even honor him with an audience, but had him taken in iron bonds to T’uḷi [Thule], an island in the Ocean. He had reigned for four years:

40:16 Բայց յերկրորդ ամի Վարազդատայ եկաց եպիսկոպոսապետ Հայոց Զաւէն, ի նոյն ազգականութենէ Աղբիանու, ամս չորս:
| 40:16 In Varazdat’s second year Zavēn became archbishop of Armenia; he was from the same family as Albianos and held office for four years:
