47:1 Յաղագս երանելւոյն Մեսրոպայ:
| 47:1 Concerning the blessed Mesrop:

47:2 Տեսեալ թէ ի վերջ հասեալ է թագաւորութիւնն Հայոց, եւ զխռովութիւնն նիւթ իւրոյ համբերութեանն գտեալ Մեսրոպայ, որ էր ի Հացեկաց Տարաւնոյ, սնեալ եւ ուսեալ առ մեծին Ներսիսի, եւ յետ ելից նորա յաշխարհէ` ի դրանն արքունի կարգեալ քարտուղար. սա սիրեաց զմիայնակեցութեան վարս. որպէս ասաց ոմն, թէ ի նաւահանգիստ փութայ նաւ խռովեալ, եւ անձն ժուժկալ խնդրէ զանապատ. նոյնպէս եւ նորա փախուցեալ. յաշխարհական զբաղմանց, եւ ընկեցեալ յետս զմարմնական պատիւն` զհետ ընթանայր երկնաւորին:
| 47:2 Seeing that the Armenian kingdom had come to an end and finding that the turmoil was a test for his patience, Mesrop - who was from Hats’ekk’ in Tarawn and had been raised and educated under Nersēs the Great, and after the latter’s departure from the world had been appointed archivist at the court - longed for the life of a hermit. As someone has said: “ A ship in trouble heads for port, and a continent soul seeks the desert”; in like manner he fled from worldly preoccupations, put human honor behind him, and hastened after the heavenly:

47:3 Եւ երթեալ ի գաւառն Գողթան բնակէ, զմիայնակեցութեան վարս ստացեալ:
| 47:3 He went and dwelt in the province of Goḷt’n, living a hermit’s life:

47:4 Եւ որ ի նմա ղաւղեալ աղանդն հեթանոսական, թագուցեալ յաւուրցն Տրդատայ մինչեւ ցայն ժամանակս, եւ ապա յայտնեցաւ ի վատթարել թագաւորութեանն Արշակունեաց, զայն եբարձ աւգնականութեամբ իշխանի գաւառին, որում անուն էր Շաբիթ:
| 47:4 And as for the heathen sect that had taken refuge there and had remained hidden from the days of Trdat down to that time and then had come into the open at the fall of the Arsacid kingdom, this he extirpated with the help of the prince of the province whose name was Shabit’:

47:5 Ուր նշանք աստուածայինք լինէին, որպէս առ սրբովն Գրիգորիւ. հալածական լեալ դեւք մարմնաւոր տեսլեամբ անկանէին ի կողմանս Մարաց:
| 47:5 Their divine miracles occurred as in the time of Saint Gregory: the demons fled in bodily form to Media:

47:6 Եւ ոչ ինչ պակաս յայնցանէ արարեալ գտանի եւ ի Սիւնեաց աշխարհին, աւգնականութեամբ նորին իշխանին որ կոչէր Վաղինակ:
| 47:6 Nor did any lesser miracles than these take place in the land of Siunik’, with the help of its prince who was called Vaḷinak:

47:7 Եւ ի վարդապետել երանելւոյն Մեսրոպայ` ոչ փոքր կրէր վտանգս, քանզի ինքն էր ընթերցող եւ թարգմանիչ. եւ եթէ այլ ոք ընթեռնոյր, ուր նա ոչ հանդիպէր` զանխուլ ի ժողովրդոցն լինէր, յաղագս ոչ լինելոյ թարգմանիչ:
| 47:7 In his teaching the blessed Mesrop endured no little hardship, for he was both reader and translator. And if someone else read when he was not present, it was unintelligible to the people since there was no translator:

47:8 Վասն որոյ եդ ի մտի հնարել գտանել նշանագիրս Հայոց լեզուիս. եւ արկեալ զանձն ի ջանս` պէս պէս փորձիւք տաժանէր:
| 47:8 Therefore he decided to try to invent letters for the Armenian language. Putting himself to the task he became very worn out by his various attempts:
