54:1 Յաղագս դպրութեան Հայոց, Վրաց եւ Աղուանից:
| 54:1 Concerning the scripts of the Armenians, Georgians, and Aḷuank’:

54:2 Վախճանեալ Արկադեայ` փոխանակ նորա թագաւորէ նորին որդի, որ կոչեցաւն Թէոդոս փոքր. եւ զնոյն բարեկամութիւն կալաւ ընդ մերում աշխարհիս եւ ընդ արքային մերում Վռամշապհոյ. բայց զմասն իւր ոչ հաւատաց նմա, այլ ինքեան կալաւ գործակալաւք եւ խաղաղութիւն արար ընդ Յազկերտի արքայի Պարսից:
| 54:2 After Arcadius had died his son, who was called Theodosius the Less, ruled in his stead. He kept the same friendship with our country and with our king Vṙamshapuh, but he did not entrust him with his own sector of Armenia but held it himself through governors; he also made peace with Yazkert, king of Persia:

54:3 Ընդ այն ժամանակս եկեալ Մեսրոպայ, եւ բերեալ զնշանագիր մերոյ լեզուիս, եւ հրամանաւ Վռամշապհոյ եւ մեծին Սահակայ ժողովեալ մանկունս ընտրեալս, ուշեղս եւ քաջասունս փափկաձայնս եւ երկարոգիս, եւ դպրոցս կարգեաց յամենայն գաւառս. եւ ուսոյց զբնաւ կողմանս բաժնոյն Պարսից, բայց ի Յունաց մասնէն, որք ընդ ձեռնադրութեանն տուգանեցան, վիճակեալք յաթոռն Կեսարու, վարել Յունական դպրութեամբ եւ ոչ ասորւով:
| 54:3 At that time Mesrop arrived, bringing the script for our language, and at the command of Vṙamshapuh and Sahak the Great he brought together selected children - intelligent, well spoken, with pleasing voices and long breath - and established schools in every province. He instructed the entire area of the Persian sector, but not the Greek part where they were subject to the see of Caesarea by virtue of its right of ordination and used the Greek script and not Syriac:

54:4 Իսկ Մեսրոպայ երթեալ յաշխարհն Վրաց` առնէ եւ նոցա նշանագիրս տուեցելովն ի վերուստ շնորհաւն, հանդերձ Ջաղայիւ ոմամբ թարգմանաւ հելլէն եւ հայ լեզուի, ձեռնտու լինելով արքայի նոցա Բակրոյ եւ եպիսկոպոսին Մովսիսի:
| 54:4 Mesrop also went to the land of Georgia and fashioned letters for them through grace given from above with a certain Jaḷay, a translator of the Greek and Armenian tongues, and with the help of their king Bakur and the bishop Moses:

54:5 Եւ ընտրեալ մանկունս եւ յերկուս բաժանեալ դասս` եւ վարդապետս թողու նոցա յաշակերտաց իւրոց զՏէր Խորձենացի, եւ զՄուշէ Տարաւնեցի:
| 54:5 After selecting children and dividing them into two groups, he left as teachers for them Tēr of Khordzean and Mushē of Tarawn from among his own disciples:

54:6 Եւ ինքն յԱղուանս իջեալ առ Արսվաղէն թագաւոր նոցա եւ առ եպիսկոպոսապետն Երեմիայ. որոց կամաւ յանձն առեալ զվարդապետութիւն նորա` ետուն մանկունս ընտիրս:
| 54:6 He himself went down to Aḷuania to their king Arsvaḷen and their archbishop Jeremiah. They willingly accepted his teaching and gave him selected children:

54:7 Եւ կոչեալ զԲենիամին ոմն շնորհաւոր թարգման, զոր անդանդաղ արձակեաց մանուկն Վասակ Սիւնեաց տէր, ի ձեռն Անանիայի եպիսկոպոսի իւրոյ. որովք ստեղծ զնշանագիրս կոկորդախաւս աղխազուր խժական խեցբեկագունին այնորիկ Գարգարացւոց լեզուին:
| 54:7 He summoned a certain Benjamin, a gifted translator, whom the young Vasak, lord of Siunik’, immediately sent under the supervision of his bishop Anania. With their help he created letters for that guttural, harsh, barbarous, and very rough tongue of the Gargarats’ik’:

54:8 Եւ վերակացու թողեալ զաշակերտ իւր զՅովնաթան, միանգամայն եւ քահանայս կացուցեալ դրանն արքունի` ինքն դառնայ ի Հայս. եւ գտանէ զմեծն Սահակ թարգմանութեան պարապեալ յասորւոյն, յոչ լինելոյ յունի:
| 54:8 Leaving his pupil Jonathan as overseer and also appointing priests for the royal court, he himself returned to Armenia. There he found Sahak the Great engaged in translating from Syriac, there being no Greek books available:

54:9 Քանզի նախ ի Մեհրուժանայ այրեալ լինէին ընդհանուր աշխարհիս յոյն գիրք. դարձեալ ի բաժանել զաշխարհս Հայոց` չտային պարսիկ վերակացուքն յոյն ումեք ուսանել դպրութիւն յիւրեանց մասինն, այլ միայն ասորի:
| 54:9 for the Greek books of the entire land had previously been burned by Mehrujan, and again at the division of Armenia, the Persian governors did not allow anyone to learn Greek in their part but only Syriac:
