61:1 Յաղագս ժողովոյն Եփեսոսի, որ վասն ամբարշտին Նեստորի եղեւ:
| 61:1 Concerning the council of Ephesus, which was held on account of the impious Nestorius:

61:2 Ընդ այն ժամանակս եկաց յաթոռ եպիսկոպոսութեանն Բիւզանդացւոց անարժանաբար ամբարիշտն Նեստոր, եւ հրէական իմացմանց հետեւեալ` հայհոյեաց զամենասուրբ կոյսն` մարդածին լինել եւ ոչ աստուածածին:
| 61:2 In those times the impious Nestorius unworthily sat on the episcopal throne of Byzantium. And following the Jewish interpretation he blasphemed the all- holy virgin as being the mother of a man and not the mother of God:

61:3 Քանզի ծնեալն ի նմանէ առեալ սկիզբն` ա՛յլ որդի ասէր շնորհաւք ի Մարիամայ, եւ այլ որդի ի Հաւրէ յառաջ քան զյաւիտեանս. որպէս զի լինել երկուս որդիս, որով Երրորդութիւնն չորրորդութիւն լինի:
| 61:3 For the one born from her had a beginning he claimed, but was called Son by grace from Mary and another was Son from the Father before ages; so that there were two Sons, whereby the Trinity became a Quaternity:

61:4 Վասն որոյ ժողովեալ սրբոց հարցն յԱսիա ի ծովահայեացն Եփեսոս գրաւորական վերծանութեամբ, Կելեստինոս Հռոմայ, Կիւրղոս Աղեքսանդրի, Յոբնաղիոս Երուսաղեմի, Յովհաննէս Անտիոքայ, Մեմնոն Եփեսոսի, Պաւղոս Հեմեսու, Թէոդոտիոս Անկիւրիայ, եւ այլք բազումք, համանգամայն երկերիւր հարք, նզովեալ զՆեստոր` խոստովանեցին մի որդի Աստուծոյ զտէր մեր Յիսուս Քրիստոս, եւ աստուածածին զամենասուրբ կոյսն Մարիամ:
| 61:4 Therefore the holy fathers gathered in Asia at Ephesus, which faces the sea. In a written statement Celestine of Rome, Cyril of Alexandria, Juvenal of Jerusalem, John of Antioch, Memnon of Ephesus, Paul of Emesa, Theodotius of Ancyra, and many others, altogether two hundred fathers, anathematized Nestorius and confessed our Lord Jesus Christ as one Son of God and the all- holy Virgin Mary as the mother of God:

61:5 Եւ վասն զի ոչ հանդիպեցան յայնմ ժողովի մեծն Սահակ եւ Մեսրոպ` գրեն առ նոսա Կիւրեղ Աղեքսանդրացի եւ Պրոկղոս Կոստանդնուպաւլսի եւ Ակակ Մելիտինեայ եպիսկոպոսք, զգուշացուցանելով զնոսա. քանզի լուան, եթէ ոմանք ի չարափառացն աշակերտաց առեալ զգիրսն Թէոդորոսի Մամուեստացւոյ, զվարդապետին Նեստորի, եւ զաշակերտին Թէոդորի` գնացին յաշխարհն Հայոց:
| 61:5 And because Sahak the Great and Mesrop were not present at that council, the bishops Cyril of Alexandria, Proclus of Constantinople, and Acacius of Melitene wrote to them in warning. They had heard that some of his heretical disciples, taking the books of Theodore of Mopsuestia - the teacher of Nestorius and the pupil of Diodore - had gone to Armenia:

61:6 Ապա եկեալ թարգմանիչն մեր, զորոց զանուանսն յիշատակեցաք յառաջագոյն` գտնի զմեծն Սահակ եւ զՄեսրոպ յԱշտիշատ Տարաւնոյ, եւ մատուցին զթուղթսն եւ զկանոնս ժողովոյն Եփեսոսի, վեց սահմանեալ կանոնաւ եւ զստոյգ աւրինակս Գրոց:
| 61:6 Then our translators, whose names we mentioned earlier, arrived and found Sahak the Great and Mesrop in Ashtishat in Tarawn; they presented to them the letters and canons of the council of Ephesus in six canonical chapters, and accurate copies of the Scriptures:

61:7 Զոր առեալ մեծին Սահակայ եւ Մեսրոպայ` դարձեալ թարգմանեցին զմի անգամ թարգմանեալն փութանակի, հանդերձ նոքաւք վերստին յաւրինեալ նորոգմամբ:
| 61:7 Receiving these, Sahak the Great and Mesrop zealously translated again what had once been translated and made with them a new version:

61:8 Բայց քանզի անգէտք էին մերումս արուեստի` ի բազում մասանց թերացեալ գործն գտանէր. վասն որոյ առեալ մեծին Սահակայ եւ Մեսրոպայ զմեզ առաքեցին յԱղեքսանդրիայ, ի լեզու պանծալի, ի ստոյգ յաւդանալ ճեմարանին վերաբանութեան:
| 61:8 But because they were ignorant of our technique their work was found to be deficient at many points. Therefore, Sahak the Great and Mesrop sent us to Alexandria to study elegant style and for accurate instruction at the academy:
