66:1 Գործք Շամուելի անարժան հոմիշխանին մեծին Սահակայ:
| 66:1 The deeds of Samuel, the unworthy colleague of Sahak the Great:

66:2 Եկեալ Շամուելի` կալաւ զաթոռ եպիսկոպոսապետութեանն, հետեւեալ վարուցն Բրքիշոյի, եւ առաւել եւս ագահութեանն մասամբ. զի նա զվախճանեալ եպիսկոպոսացն միայն յափշտակեաց զվիճակ, այլ սա եւ զկենդանեացն. քանզի եւ փոխանորդ մեռելոցն ոչ տայր թոյլ ձեռնադրել մեծին Սահակայ, եւ զկենդանեացն դոյզն ինչ գտեալ պատճառս խափանման հարկացն արքունի` հալածականս առնէր, յինքն կորզելով զամենեցուն տունս:
| 66:2 Samuel came and occupied the archiepiscopal throne, following Brkisho’s way of life but with even greater avarice. He plundered the sees not only of dead bishops but also of living ones; he did not allow Sahak the Great to ordain successors for the dead bishops, and as for the living he found feeble excuses that they were holding back the royal taxes to expel them and seize all their domains for himself:

66:3 Վասն որոյ ատեցեալ ի բնաւ եպիսկոպոսացն` արհամարհեալ լինէր. զի թէ եւ բիւրապատիկ չարիս ի նմանէ կրէին` ոչ երբէք տեսանէին զնա, բայց ի Սուրմակայն յայնմանէ, զորոյ եւ մեծացոյց իսկ զվիճակն, արքունի հրամանաւ հանեալ զբազմաց` նմա հաւատայր:
| 66:3 Therefore he was hated by all the bishops and despised. For although they endured a thousand evils from him, they never saw him - except for Surmak, whose see indeed he increased; what by royal command he took that belonged to many others he entrusted to him:

66:4 Ընդ որ նախանձեալ եւ այլ եպիսկոպոսաց` ժպրհեցան զնոյն առնել, խնդրելով ի Պարսից արքայէն աւգնականութեամբ իւրաքանչիւր իշխանաց:
| 66:4 Envious of him, other bishops also dared to do the same, seeking permission from the Persian king with the assistance of each one’s prince:

66:5 Այլ մեծն Սահակ ոչ ինչ կասեաց զհոգեւոր կաթնն դիեցուցանել մանկանց եկեղեցւոյ հանդերձ Մեսրոպաւ, զոր թողեալ խարսխեաց յեկեղեցւոջն կաթուղիկէ, որ ի Վաղարշապատ քաղաքի, ինքն կալով ի Բագրեւանդ գաւառի, ի տեղւոջն` ուր ծագեաց լոյս յերկնից ի մկրտել սրբոյն Գրիգորի զՏրդատ արքայ եւ զբոլոր Հայս:
| 66:5 But Sahak the Great did not cease nourishing with spiritual milk the young of the church, with Mesrop whom he established in the cathedral church in the city of Vaḷarshapat, while he himself resided in the province of Bagrevand, in the place where the light had shone from heaven when Saint Gregory baptized King Trdat and all the Armenians:

66:6 Բայց Շամուէլ կեցեալ ամս հինգ` մեռանի ի մերում աշխարհիս:
| 66:6 After living for five years Samuel died in our country:

66:7 Յայնժամ ժողովեալ ի միասին ամենայն նախարարացն` չոգան առ մեծն Սահակ, եւ զմեղանս յանձն առեալ` աղաչէին զնա դարձեալ ունել զաթոռն. խոստանային ի Պարսից արքայէն հաստատել զնա, մուրհակ ամենեցուն կնքեալ` ազգաւ տալ թոռանց նորա զնոյն իշխանութիւն:
| 66:7 Then all the princes gathered together, went to Sahak the Great, and admitting their faults, begged him to reoccupy the throne. They promised to gain the Persian king’s confirmation, and they all sealed an edict that they would give the same position to his nephews in descent:

66:8 Այլ նա ոչ առնոյր յանձն. եւ ի բազում թախանձելոյ նոցա հարկաւորեալ` պատմեաց զտեսիլն, որ յառաջ քան զբազում ժամանակս երեւութացաւ նմա ի քում ապագայիցն յայտնութիւնք:
| 66:8 But he did not accept; and when he was importuned and pressed by many of them, he told them of the vision that had appeared in sleep to him a long time before as a revelation of the future:

66:9 Զոր լուեալ նախարարացն եւ գիտացեալ, թէ յաստուածային հրամանէ դադարեաց յազգէ նորա քահանայապետութիւնն` յարտասուս հարեալ, աւաղելով զինքեանս ըստ Աւետարանին բանի, թէ Հարկ է գալ գայթակղութեանն, բայց վա՜յ այնոցիկ, ընդ ոյր ձեռն գայցէ գայթակղութիւնն` թոյլ ետուն նմա:
| 66:9 When the princes heard it and realized that it was by divine command that the archbishopric had been withdrawn from his family, they burst into tears; and lamenting over themselves according to the saying in the gospel: “ It is necessary that offense should come, but woe to those through whom offense will come” [cf. Matt. 18:7; Luke 17:1], they left him alone:
