9:1 Որ ինչ յաւուրս սորա ի հիւսիսականաց ազգաց արշաւանք ի մեզ, ուր եւ նահատակութիւնք Վահանայ Ամատունւոյ:
| 9:1 The incursion among us by the northern nations in his days, when the heroic exploits of Vahan Amatuni were performed:

9:2 Յաւուրս սորա միաբանեալ բնակիչք հիւսիսոյ Կաւկասու, գիտացեալ զթուլասրտութիւն նորա եւ զյուլութիւն, եւ առաւել ի հրապուրելոյ մաղթանաց Սանատրկոյ` ի գաղտնի հրամանէ Շապհոյ Պարսից արքայի, արշաւեալ ի միջոց աշխարհիս մերոյ հասանէին մեծաւ ամբոխիւ, որպէս թէ երկու բիւրովք:
| 9:2 In his days the inhabitants of the northern Caucasus united, and aware of his timidity and cowardice and especially enticed by the entreaties of Sanatruk at the secret command of Shapuh, king of Persia, they made an incursion into our country with a great host, about twenty thousand men:

9:3 Որոց պատահեալ պատերազմաւ արեւելեայ եւ արեւմտեայ զաւրուն Հայոց` հանդերձ զաւրապետաւքն Բագարատաւ ասպետիւ եւ Վահանաւ նահապետիւ Ամատունեաց. քանզի հարաւային մեր գունդք առ արքային Խոսրովայ էին յաշխարհին Ծոփաց, եւ զՄիհրան սպանեալ, եւ զհիւսիսային մեր գունդն հարեալ, ի թիկունս ընկեցեալ թշնամեացն, եւ հասեալ ի դրունս Վաղարշապատու պաշարէին:
| 9:3 They were opposed in war by the eastern and western Armenian armies with the generals Bagarat the aspet and Vahan the prince of the Amatunik’, for our northern forces were with King Khosrov in the land of Tsop’k’. The enemy killed Mihran, cut down our northern forces, and put them to flight, and having reached the gates of Vaḷarshapat set siege to it:

9:4 Որոց յանկարծակի ի վերայ անկեալ արեւելեայ եւ արեւմտեայ մեր զաւրուն, եւ անտի մերժեալ զՕշական առապարաւն, ոչ ետուն ժամանել ճապաղել ի նետաձգութիւն ըստ աւրինի իւրեանց սովորութեանն, երագեալ սաստկապէս զհետ ունելով քաջաձիոցն ի դժուարս քարանց եւ ի վիմուտ տեղիս:
| 9:4 But our eastern and western armies fell upon them unexpectedly, pushed them back from there to the rocks of Awshakan, and gave them no time to fire their arrows according to their usual custom. The valiant cavalry pursued them fast and hard into difficult rocky places:

9:5 Մինչեւ յոչ կամաց գումարեալ թշնամեացն ի ճակատ. եւ զաւրագլուխ նիզակաւորացն լեալ անարի ոմն սկայ վառեալ, եւ թաղեաւ կաճեայ բոլորով ամենեւիմբ պարածածկեցեալ, շահատակէր ի մէջ զաւրացն:
| 9:5 Finally the enemy unwillingly drew up his battle line. The commander of their lancers, a fearsome armed giant completely enveloped in felt, was assaulting the main body of the army:

9:6 Յոր ակնակառոյց լեալ քաջացն Հայոց եւ յարձակեալ` ոչ ինչ կարէին վնասել. քանզի հարեալ նիզակաւ` ճախր առնոյր կաճեայն:
| 9:6 The valiant Armenians, keeping their eyes on him, attacked without being able to harm him, for when they struck him with a lance the felt turned it aside:

9:7 Յայնժամ քաջին Վահանայ Ամատունւոյ հայեցեալ յեկեղեցին կաթուղիկէ, ասէ. «Օգնեա՛ ինձ, Աստուած, որ զԴաւթեան պարսաքարն դիպեցուցեր ճակատու խրոխտացելոյն Գողիաթու. ուղղեա՛ եւ զնիզակս իմ ական հզաւրիս այսորիկ:
| 9:7 Then the brave Vahan Amatuni, looking toward the cathedral, said: “ Help me, God, who guided David’s sling stone to the forehead of the insolent Goliath [cf. 1 Kings 17:49]. Direct my lance also to the eye of this warrior:

9:8 Եւ ոչ վրիպեցաւ ի խնդրոյն. ընդ գաւակ ձիոյն հարեալ` յերկիր կործանեաց զահագին զվիրագն:
| 9:8 He did not fail in his request: he struck the fearsome giant from the back of his horse to the ground:
|
9:9 Այսպիսի դիպուած ի փախուստ յորդորեաց զթշնամիսն, եւ ի յաղթութիւն զՀայոց գունդն զաւրացոյց:
| 9:9 Such a disaster put the enemy to flight and strengthened the Armenian forces to gain the victory:

9:10 Եւ աստի դարձեալ յաշխարհն Ծոփաց Բագարատ` վկայ հաստատուն առանց նախանձու լինի առ արքայի վասն Վահանայ քաջութեանցն եւ առաքինի դիպուածոյն:
| 9:10 When Bagarat returned from there to the land of Tsop’k’ he was a faithful and unjealous witness to the king about Vahan’s bravery and courageous acts:

9:11 Վասն որոյ պարգեւէ նմա արքայ զտեղի ճակատուն` զՕշական, ուր ինքնակամ դիմագրաւ նահատակն եղեւ:
| 9:11 Therefore the king granted him the site of the battle, Awshakan, where he had spontaneously and boldly proved himself a hero:

9:12 Եւ փոխանակ Միհրանայ կարգէ զԳարջոյլ Մաղխազ նահապետ Խոռխոռունեաց ի վերայ զաւրուն:
| 9:12 And in Mihran’s stead he appointed over the army Garjoyl Maḷkhaz, prince of the Khoṙkhoṙunik’:
