| 35:1 Տեառն իմոյ ամենայն բարութեան եւ երանութեան եւ հոգեւորի Կոմիտասայ արքեպիսկոպոսի եւ մետրապուլտի աշխարհիդ Հայոց, Մոդեստոս նուաստ երէց եւ տեղապահ Երուսաղէմի:
| 35:1 To my Lord Komitas, most good, blessed, and spiritual, archbishop and metropolitan of the land of Armenia, Modestos, a humble priest and locum- tenens of Jerusalem:
| 35:2 Աւրհնեալ է Աստուած եւ հայր Տեառն մերոյ Յիսուսի Քրիստոսի, հայր գթութեանց եւ Աստուած ամենայն մխիթարութեանց, որ մխիթարեաց զմեզ մխիթարութեամբ բազմաւ ի վերայ ամենայն նեղութեանց մերոց ի գալստեան ձերոյ հաւտիդ: Քանզի ոչ մխիթարեաց զմեզ ի գալստեան դոցա. նախ՝ յիշեցուցանելով մեզ զառաջին երթեւեկն, զոր առնէին ի պատուական տեղիս Երուսաղէմի: Երկրորդ՝ զի հաճեաց զմիտս մեր ի գալստեան դոցա, եւ ծանեաք, զի ոչ իսպառ մերժեաց զմեզ Աստուած:
| 35:2 Blessed is God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Father of mercies and God of all consolations, who consoled us in his great compassion for all our afflictions’ in the coming of your flock. For did he not console us in their arrival? First, by recalling to us the previous journeys which they made to the venerable sites of Jerusalem. Secondly, because he gratified our mind at their coming, and we recognized that God had not completely abandoned us:
| 35:3 Այլ արդարեւ սոյն Աստուած մեր ի մեզ է, ցուցանելով մեզ ի ձեռն նոցուն իրաց զմեծամեծս իւր՝ որ յառաջ քան զյաւիտեանս մինչեւ ցայժմ կատարելով. եւ զզաւրութիւն նորա եւ սքանչելիս նորա աւրհնելով եւ մեք զՊաւղոսին ասասցուք. «Որպէս մեծացան գործք քո, Տէր. զամենայն իմաստութեամբ արարեր: Արդարեւ անքնին են դատաստանք նորա, եւ առանց զննելոյ են ճանապարհք նորա:
| 35:3 But truly, that same God of ours is among us, showing us through these things his great works which he has accomplished [from] before ages until now. Blessing his power and his wonders, we shall repeat the saying of Paul: ‘ How magnificent are your works, Lord. Everything you have done with wisdom. Inscrutable indeed are his judgments, and his paths unsearchable:
| 35:4 Զի ով ծանեաւ զմիտս Տեառն, կամ ո խորհրդակից եղեւ նմա, կամ ով ետ նմա փոխ եւ հատուցանէ նմա, զի ի նմանէ են եւ նովաւ եւ ի նա ամենայն: Նմա փառք յաւիտեանս, ամէն:
| 35:4 For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counsellor; or who has given him a loan and he will repay him? For all things are from him and through him and in him. To him be glory for ever, Amen. ’:
| 35:5 Արդ՝ զի զհակառակորդսն մեր սիրելի արար, եւ ետ զմեզ ի գթութիւն եւ յողորմութիւն առաջի ամենայն գերչաց մերոց. որ զտիրասպանունս եւ զհրէայս, որք կարծէին չարչարանաւք սորա դարձեալ թշնամանել զայն, որ չարչարեցաւ վասն մեր, զՏէրն մեր Յիսուս Քրիստոս՝ զճշմարիտ Աստուածն մեր, որք համարձակեալ պատերազմեցան իսկ, եւ այրեցին զպատուական տեղիս զայս՝ հաճեցաւ Աստուծոյ մարդասիրութիւնն զնոսա աւտարացուցանել ի քաղաքէն սրբոյ իւրմէ Երուսաղէմէ:
| 35:5 Now because he made our opponents friendly and bestowed on us pity and mercy in front of all our captors, slayers of the Lord and Jews, who thought that by tormenting this one they would again insult the one who was tormented for our sake, our Lord Jesus Christ and true God, and who audaciously waged war and burnt these honourable places - God’s philanthropy was pleased to expel them from his own holy city, Jerusalem:
| 35:6 Որք կամէին բնակիչ առնել ինքեանց՝ լսեն բովանդակ չբնակել, եւ տեսանել ոչ արժանաւորին, եւ զպատուական եւ զերկրպագու չարչարանս եւ զսուրբ եւ զկենսընկալ նորա գերեզմանս եւ զսուրբ Գողգոթայ մեծափառ նորոգեալ ճանաչեն, հատուցեալ զիւրաքանչիւր փառս. բազում վերագրութեամբ զաստուածային պաշտաւնն եւ զմայր եկեղեցեաց Սիովնն, եւ զվերացումն նորա եւ միանգամայն իսկ ասացեալ՝ զամենայն երկրպագու տեղիս նորոգեալ լսելով՝ նախանձաբերին, ոչ ի բարի, այլ ի բնիկ նախանձանք հայրենական հաւր նոցա Կայենի:
| 35:6 Those who wished to make it their own habitation are ordered not to dwell there at all, nor are they reckoned worthy to see it. They realize that the [site of the] honourable and worshipful passion and his holy and life- receiving tomb and the holy Golgotha have been gloriously renewed, each one’s splendour restored. On learning through many inscriptions that the divine cult and the mother of churches, Sion, and [the site of] his Ascension and - to say in a word - all the worshipful places have been renewed, they are envious, not for the good but with the natural envy of their ancestor Cain:
| 35:7 Քանզի բազում անգամ ջանացան, բազում կաշառաւք հրաման խնդրէին մտանել ի սուրբ քաղաքն, եւ ոչ արժանաւորեցան՝ յԱստուծոյ արգելեալ, որ եւ խրատեաց զմեզ ոչ ըստ գործոց մերոց, այլ հայրական գթութեամբն դարձուցանել զմեզ ի նորոգութիւն:
| 35:7 For often they tried; with many bribes they sought permission to enter the holy city. But they were not made worthy, being prevented by God who punished us, ‘ not in accordance with our deeds’, but through his fatherly pity in order to restore us to regeneration:
| 35:8 Բայց եւ զհրաշալին գրելով ուրախ առնեմք զքեզ. ոչ յանիրաւութենէ եւ կամ յաւերանաց շինութիւնք երկրպագու տեղեացս այսոցիկ լինին, այլ ի ձեռն նորա ողորմութեանն, որով բարձրացոյց զաշխարհս եւ զառ ինքն ծանաւթութիւն շնորհեաց:
| 35:8 By describing this miracle, we make you rejoice. The reconstruction of these worshipful places occurs not from injustice or ruin but through his mercy, whereby he raised up this world and granted it knowledge of himself:
| 35:9 Արդ՝ որպէս ասացեալդ, թէ շնորհիւ Աստուծոյ ի ձեր սուրբ աղաւթիցդ ամենայն եկեղեցիքս Երուսաղէմի կարգաւորեցան եւ պաշտին: Եւ խաղաղութիւն քաղաքիս Աստուծոյ եւ սորին շրջեկիս, որպէս դէմ յանդիման պատմեն ձեզ, որպէս տեսին զայս քրիստոսասէր մարդիկդ ձեր: Քանզի զայս ամենայն ի նորին յաւրինողին՝ եւ միայն ի մարմնի են գործքն, եւ ոչ ի մարդկային ձեռաց է զաւրութիւն, զի մի պարծեսցի ամենայն մարմին առաջի նորա:
| 35:9 So, as you said, by the grace of God through your holy prayers all the churches of Jerusalem were re- established and are in use. There is peace in this city of God and its surroundings, as they will inform you face to face, just as your Christ- loving people have seen. For all this [depends] on its author; the deeds are only in the body, but the power derives not from human hands, ‘ lest everybody boast’ before him:
| 35:10 Քանզի նա է խաղաղութիւն մեր որ առնէ զամենայն, որպէս ասացեալդ է, եւ վերստին նորոգէ որպէս այժմիկ մարտեալ՝ ուրախ արասցէ զմեզ ի ձեռն սուրբ աղաւթից ձերոց, քարոզելով զսորին խաղաղութիւն սուրբ եկեղեցեացն եւ շնորհելով մեզ հովիւս եւ առաջնորդս եկեղեցեաց նորա: Եւ արկցէ ի միտս ձեր՝ անդադար աղաւթելով վասն մեր, եւ մի պակասել ամենեւին ի յիշել եւ նայել ի մեզ եւ յաղքատս Երուսաղէմի, եւ որ ինչ պիտոյ է՝ լնուլ:
10 Եւ եթէ հնար իցէ զաստուածասէր ձեր նախանձդ եւ ի ձեռնտուութիւն շինածոյ կենարար չարչարանացն ձգել. զի եւ այսմ բարւոյ եւ փափագելի պարգեւաց հանդիպիմք: Բայց եւ զայս աղաչեմ զհայրական զձեր սրբութիւնդ եւ որք ընդ ձեր սրբասուն եպիսկոպոսունսդ են, առաջի նոցա ընթեռնուլ զթուղթդ:
| 35:10 Since he is our peace’, he who creates everything, as you said, and renews it as in the present struggle - may he make us happy through your holy prayers, by preaching his peace to the holy churches and by granting us pastors and prelates for his churches. May he persuade you to pray unceasingly for us, and not desist at all in remembering and recalling us and the poor of Jerusalem, and in fulfilling whatever is needful.
10 If it is possible, to extend your pious zeal to the assistance of rebuilding the [sites of his] life- giving Passion, so that we may attain this good end and the desired gifts. But I also beg your fatherly holiness and the saintly bishops with you, to read this letter before them:
