| 38:0 Khoṙeam comes to take Constantinople; supplication of Heraclius; order from Khosrov to take the city. In a naval battle the Persian force is destroyed. Insolent letter of Khosrov to Heraclius. Heraclius installs Constantine on the throne of the kingdom and goes to Caesarea. From there he invades Armenia and takes Dvin, Nakhchawan, and Gandzak. Khoṙeam attacks Heraclius. Adroit manoeuvres of Heraclius; he destroys the Persians bit by bit:

38:1 Եւ եղեւ յայնմ ժամանակի դիմեաց գնաց Խոռեամ զաւրու իւրով ի Քաղկեդոն, եւ բանակեցաւ դէմ յանդիման Բիւզանդիայ, եւ խնդրէր անցանել եւ գերել զքաղաքն թագաւորանիստ:
| 38:1 At that time Khoṙeam marched with his army to Chalcedon and camped facing Byzantium; his intention was to cross over and capture the capital city:

38:2 Արդ իբրեւ ետես կայսրն Երակղոս զհէնն, որ եկն ի կործանել զթագաւորութիւն նորա՝ ակամայ բարեկամանայ եւ մեծարէ զնոսա իբրեւ զվաստակաւորս եւ զսիրելի հիւրս. ել ընդ առաջ նորա պատարագաւք, եւ տայր զաւրավարին եւ իշխանացն մեծամեծ ընծայս:
| 38:2 Now when the emperor Heraclius saw the brigands who had come to destroy his kingdom, unwillingly he befriended and honoured them like meritorious and dear guests. He went to meet him with gifts, and gave magnificent presents to the general and princes:

38:3 Եւ բաշխէր զաւրացն հռոգս, եւ ճաշ եւ ընթրիս ամենայն զաւրացն մինչեւ ցեւթն աւր. եւ ինքն նստեալ ի վերայ նաւու՝ կայր ի մէջ ծովուն եւ խաւսէր ընդ նոսա այսպէս. «Զինչ կամիք առնել, կամ էր եկիք ի տեղիս յայս. միթէ զծով իբրեւ զցամաք համարիք՝ մարտնչել ընդ նմա: Կարող է Աստուած, եթէ կամի, ցամաքեցուցանել զսա առաջի ձեր. բայց զգոյշ լերուք՝ գուցէ ոչ հաճեսցի Աստուած եւ խնդրեսցէ ի ձէնջ զվրէժ անդունդք ծովուս:
| 38:3 He distributed donatives to the army, and food and provisions to all the troops for seven days. He himself embarked on a ship, stood off at sea, and parleyed with them as follows: ‘ What do you wish to do, and why have you come to this place? Surely you do not reckon the sea as dry land, to wage war on it? God is able, should he wish, to dry it up before you. But take care lest perchance God be not pleased, and the depths of the sea seek vengeance from you:

38:4 Քանզի ոչ եթէ վասն աստուածպաշտութեան ձերոյ ետ յաղթութիւն, այլ վասն մերոյ անաւրէնութեան. մեղք մեր արարին զայս, եւ ոչ թէ քաջութիւն ձեր: Եւ կամ զինչ խնդրէ թագաւորն ձեր յինէն, որ ոչ առնէ ընդ իս զհաշտութիւն. բառնալ կամիցի զթագաւորութիւնս իմ. մի ջանասցի, քանզի զսա Աստուծոյ հաստատեալ է, եւ բառնալ զսա ոչ ոք կարէ, բայց եթէ յԱստուծոյ այնպէս ինչ թուեսցի, կամք Աստուծոյ կատարեսցին:
| 38:4 For he did not give you victory because of your piety, but because of our impiety. Our sins have brought this about, and not your valour. What does your king seek from me, who does not make peace with me? Does he wish to abolish my empire? Let him not try, because God established it and no one is able to destroy it - save that if it so seems good to God, let the will of God be done:

38:5 Եւ կամ ասիցէ, եթէ ես նստուցից ձեզ թագաւոր. արասցէ զով եւ կամեսցի, եւ մեք ընդունիմք: Այլ զքէն արեան Մաւրկայ խնդրիցէ. խնդրեաց Աստուած ի ձեռաց Փոկասայ ի ձեռն հաւր իմոյ Հերակղի [...] այլ տակաւին ծարաւի է արիւնարբութեամբ: Մինչեւ յերբ ոչ յագեսցի արեամբ. միթէ ոչ կարէին Հոռոմք սպանանել զնա եւ բառնալ զտէրութիւնն Պարսից, յորժամ ետ զնա Աստուած ի ձեռս մեր. այլ արար ի վերայ նորա ողորմութիւն:
| 38:5 If he should say: I shall install a king for you, let him install whom he wishes, and we shall accept him. But does he seek vengeance for the blood of Maurice? God sought that from the hands of Phocas through my father Heraclius. But he is still thirsting for blood. For how long will he not be sated with blood? Were not the Romans able to kill him and destroy the empire of the Persians when God gave him into our hands? But he [Maurice] had mercy on him:

38:6 Եւ ես զնոյն խնդրեմ ի նմանէ, զհաշտութիւն եւ զսէր: Եւս ես խնդրեմ ի ձէնջ երիս ինչս, եւ լուարուք ինձ. ի բաց արարէք յաշխարհէս զհուր եւ զսուր եւ զգերութիւն. եւ յերիցունցդ աւգուտ գտանէք, զի ոչ դուք նուազիք ի սովու, եւ ոչ հարկք արքունի կորնչիցին:
| 38:6 I request the same from him: reconciliation and friendship. I also request from you three things; so heed me. Remove from my land fire and sword and captivity; and from these three things you will find profit, because you will not suffer from famine, nor will the royal taxes be lost:

38:7 Եւ ես առաքեմ աւասիկ թագաւորին ձերոյ հրովարտակ պատարագաւք, խնդրել ի նմանէ զհաշտութիւն եւ ընդ իս զխաղաղութիւն»: Եւ նոցա ընկալեալ զընծայսն՝ հաւանեցան առնել ըստ խնդրոյ նորա:
| 38:7 Behold, I shall send to your king a letter with gifts, to seek from him conciliation and peace with me. ’ They received the gifts and agreed to act in accordance with his request:

38:8 Իսկ թագաւորն Պարսից ընդունէր զպատարագսն բերեալ ի կայսերէ, եւ զհրեշտակսն անդրէն ոչ արձակէր: Եւ հրաման տայր զաւրաց իւրոց նաւաւք անցանել ի Բիւզանդիա: Եւ կազմեալ նաւ սկսաւ պատրաստել նաւամարտութիւն ընդ Բիւզանդիայ: Եւ ելին ընդ առաջ նորա ի Բիւզանդիոյ զաւրք նաւամարտիկ: Եւ եղեւ պատերազմ ի մէջ ծովուն, ուստի դարձան ամաւթով զաւրքն Պարսից. եւ կորեան [Դ] հազար մարդ նաւաւք, եւ այլ ոչ եւս համարձակեցան ի նոյն գործ:
| 38:8 The Persian king accepted the presents brought from the emperor, but he did not send back the messengers. He commanded his army to cross by ships to Byzantium. Having equipped [ships] he began to prepare for a naval battle with Byzantium. Naval forces came out from Byzantium to oppose him, and there was a battle at sea from which the Persian army returned in shame. They had lost [4,000] men with their ships, and did not venture to undertake a similar enterprise:

38:9 Եւ եղեւ յամի [ԼԴ-երորդի] Խոսրովայ արքայի՝ գրէ առ Երակղոս հրովարտակ այսպէս:
| 38:9 In the [34th] year of king Khosrov he wrote a letter to Heraclius as follows:

38:10 Աստուածոց պատուական եւ ամենայն երկրի տէր եւ թագաւոր եւ ծնունդ մեծի Արամազդայ Խոսրով՝ առ Երակղոս անմիտ եւ անպիտան ծառայդ մեր:
| 38:10 Khosrov, honoured among the gods, lord and king of all the earth, and offspring of the great Aramazd, to Heraclius our senseless and insignificant servant:

38:11 Ոչ կամեցեալ տալ զանձն ի ծառայութիւն մեզ, այլ տէր եւ թագաւոր կոչես զքեզ. եւ գանձ իմ որ առ քեզ են, ծախես, եւ զծառայս իմ պատրես, եւ զզաւրս աւազակաց ժողովեալ՝ չտաս ինձ հանգչել: Ոչ ապաքէն սպառեցի զՅոյնս: Եւ դու ասես վստահանալ յԱստուածն քոյ. վասն էր ոչ փրկեցին զԿեսարիա եւ զԵրուսաղէմ եւ զԱղեքսանդրիա մեծ ի ձեռաց իմոց:
| 38:11 You have not wished to submit yourself to us, but you call yourself lord and king. My treasure which is with you, you spend; my servants you defraud; and having collected an army of brigands, you give me no rest. So, did I not destroy the Greeks? But you claim to trust in your God. Why did he not save Caesarea and Jerusalem and the great Alexandria from my hands:

38:12 Միթէ եւ այժմ ոչ գիտես, եթէ զծով եւ զցամաք ինձ հնազանդեցուցի. իսկ արդ՝ միայն զԿոստանդնուպաւլիս ոչ կարացից բրել: Բայց արդ՝ զամենայն յանցանս թողում քեզ. արի, առ զկին քո եւ զորդի եւ եկ այսր: Եւ տաց քեզ ագարակս, այգիս եւ ձիթենիս, որով կեցցես. եւ մեք սիրով նայեսցուք ի քեզ:
| 38:12 Do you not now know that I have subjected to myself the sea and the dry land? So, is it only Constantinople that I shall not be able to erase? However, I shall forgive you all your trespasses. “ Arise, take your wife and children and come here. I shall give you estates, vineyards and olive- trees whereby you may make a living. ’ And we shall look upon you with friendship:

38:13 Մի խաբեսցէ զքեզ սնոտի յոյսն ձեր. զի Քրիստոսն այն, որ զանձն իւր ոչ կարաց ապրեցուցանել ի Հրէիցն, այլ սպանին կախեալ զփայտէ, զքեզ զիարդ կարէ ապրեցուցանել ի ձեռաց իմոց: Զի եթէ իջանիցես յանդունդս ծովու՝ ձգեցից զձեռն իմ եւ ըմբռնեցից զքեզ. եւ ապա տեսցես զիս, որպէս դու ոչ կամիցիս:
| 38:13 Let not your vain hope deceive you. For that Christ who was not able to save himself from the Jews - but they killed him by hanging him on a cross - how can the same save you from my hands? “ For if you descend into the depths of the sea”, I shall stretch out my hand and seize you. And then you will see me in a manner you will not desire. ’:

38:14 Եւ առեալ Երակլի կայսեր զհրովարտակն՝ հրամայեաց ընթեռնուլ առաջի հայրապետին եւ մեծամեծացն: Եւ մտեալ ի տունն Աստուծոյ՝ տարածեցին զհրովարտակն առաջի սրբոյ սեղանոյն. անկան ի վերայ երեսաց իւրեաց յերկիր առաջի Տեառն, եւ լացին դառնապէս, զի տեսցէ զնախատինսն, զոր նախատեցին զնա թշնամիք նորա:
| 38:14 When the emperor Heraclius received this epistle, he ordered it to be read before the patriarch and the magnates. Entering the house of God, they spread the letter before the holy altar. They fell on their faces to the ground before the Lord and wept bitterly, so that he might see the insults which his enemies had inflicted upon him:

38:15 Հաճոյ թուեցաւ Երակլի եւ ամենայն սինկղիտոսացն նստուցանել զԿոստանդոս որդի Երակլի յաթոռ թագաւորութեանն, որ էր մանուկ փոքր: Եւ Երակլի հանդերձեալ զինքն՝ առնուլ զկին իւր եւ գնալ ընդ արեւելս. ապա յայնժամ աւելի եւս հաստատեցին զԿոստանդին ի պատիւ թագաւորութեան ըստ առաջին բանին:
| 38:15 Heraclius and all the senators decided to install Constantine, son of Heraclius, on the throne of the kingdom; he was a young child. Heraclius made preparations to take his wife and go to the east. At that time they confirmed even more [securely] Constantine in the royal dignity according to the previous agreement:

38:16 Ապա պատրաստեցաւ Երակլոս կնաւն եւ ներքինեաւքն եւ իշխանաւք դրանն եւ արար զզատիկն ի Կոստանդնուպաւլիս, եւ զայգոյ զատկին նաւեաց ի ծով ի Քաղկեդոն: Հրաման տայ զաւրաց իւրոց ժողովել ի Կեսարիա Կապադովկացւոց. եւ ինքն չու արարեալ ի Քաղկեդոնէ՝ եկն ի Կեսարիա, եւ եհար զխորան իւր ի մէջ բանակին, եւ կոչել հրամայեաց զամենայն զաւրսն եւ ընթեռնուլ զհրովարտակն առաջի նոցա, եւ պատմէր զելն իւր առ նոսա:
| 38:16 So Heraclius made preparations with his wife and the eunuchs and princes of the court. He celebrated Easter in Constantinople, and on the morning after Easter day sailed to Chalcedon. He ordered his army to assemble in Caesarea of Cappadocia. He himself travelled from Chalcedon, reached Caesarea, and pitched his tent in the middle of the camp. He ordered all the troops to be summoned and the letter to be read before them, and he described his coming out to join them:

38:17 Իսկ զաւրն թէպէտ եւ ընդ բանսն խռովեցան, սակայն խնդութեամբ ուրախ եղեն ի վերայ գալստեան նորա: Աւրհնեցին նմա զյաղթութիւնն եւ ասեն. «Ամենայն ուրեք ուր եւ երթիցես՝ ընդ քեզ եմք ի կալ եւ ի մեռանել. եւ եղիցի ամենայն թշնամիք քոյ հող ի ներքոյ ոտից քոց, ի ջնջել զնոսա յերեսաց երկրէ տեառն Աստուծոյ մերոյ, եւ ի բառնալ զնախատինս իւր ի մարդկանէ:
| 38:17 Although the army was disturbed at the words, nonetheless they were very joyful at his arrival. They wished him victory and said: ‘ Wherever you may go, we are with you to stand and die. May all your enemies become dust beneath your feet, as the Lord our God obliterates them from the face of the earth and removes the insults paid him by men. ’:

38:18 Չուեաց գնաց Երակլոս [ՃԻ] հազարաւ՝ երթալ ի դուռն թագաւորին Պարսից. եւ ճանապարհ կալեալ ընդ կողմանս հիւսիսոյ՝ ել դէպ ուղիղ ի Կարնոյ քաղաք, եւ հասեալ ի Դուին այրարատեան՝ աւերէ զնա եւ զՆախճաւան: Եւ դիմեալ ի Գանձակ Ատրպատականի՝ կործանէ եւ զբագինս Հրատին մեծի, որում Վշնասպն կոչէին:
| 38:18 Heraclius marched on with [120,000] to go to the court of the Persian king. He travelled through the regions of the north, making directly for the city of Karin; and having reached Dvin in Ayrarat, he ravaged it and Nakhchawan. Proceeding to Gandzak in Atrpatakan, he also destroyed the altars of the great Fire which they called Vshnasp:

38:19 Եւ արքայ Խոսրով փութացուցանէր զզաւրս իւր որ ի Յունաց գաւառին, զի հասցէ նմա յաւգնականութիւն: Զի թէպէտ եւ կազմեցին զերիվարս իւր, եւ ետ ի ձեռս Շահենայ պատգոսապանի, այլ նուազ էր զաւրն եւ չկարացին ունել զդէմ. զգանձս իւր ամբարէր ի Տիզբոն, եւ ինքն պատրաստէր ի փախուստ:
| 38:19 King Khosrov hastily recalled his army which was in Greek territory to come to his help. For although they had equipped his horses and he had put them under the command of Shahēn Patgosapan, yet his army was small and they were unable to put up a resistance. He stored his treasures at Ctesiphon, and prepared himself for flight:

38:20 Իսկ զաւրն Պարսից փութանակի հասանէին ի Մրծուին: Ազդ լինի Երակլի կայսեր, եթէ եկն Խոռեամ ի Մրծուին առնու զզաւրս իւր եւ գերութիւն, եւ դառնայ առ ամուր աշխարհաւն Մարաց. գայ հասանէ ի Փայտակարան: Ազդ եղեւ Խոսրովու, եթէ դարձաւ Երակլոս եւ եհաս ի Փայտակարան, եւ կամի ընդ Աղուանս անցանել ի Վիրս. հրաման ետ զաւրավարի իւրոյ Շահր Վարազայ, զի զառաջն կալցի:
| 38:20 Then the Persian army reached Nisibis at great speed. The emperor Heraclius was informed that Khoṙeam had come to Nisibis; he took his troops and captives, returned by the difficult terrain of Media, and reached P’aytakaran. Khosrov was informed that Heraclius had retreated and had reached P’aytakaran, and was intending to pass into Iberia via Ałuank’ He commanded his general Shahr Varaz to block his way:

38:21 Եւ նա փութով հասանէ յԱյրարատ, եւ անցանէ ի Գարդման ընդդէմ նորա, եւ բանակի ի միւս Տիգրանակերտի յանդիման նորա: Եւ Շահէնն [ԼՌ-աւ] հասեալ բանակեցաւ ի թիկանց Երակլի ի Տիգրանակերտ աւանի: Եւ էին սոքա աստի, եւ նոքա անտի բանակեալ: Եւ բանակն Երակլի ի մէջ նոցա երկոցունց:
| 38:21 He rapidly came to Ayrarat, crossed into Gardman to oppose him, and camped opposite him at the other Tigranakert. Shahēn with [30,000] troops arrived and camped behind Heraclius in the town of Tigranakert. So, the latter were camped on this side, and the former on that side; and the camp of Heraclius was between the two:

38:22 Իբրեւ ետես Երակլոս, եթէ ի մէջ արկին զնա՝ դարձաւ ի վերայ զաւրուն՝ որ ի թիկանց կողմանէ, հապճեպ զաւրութեամբ եհար զնա եւ խորտակեաց եւ գնաց ընդ Ծղուկս. եւ թափեցաւ ընդ լեռնակողմն ի դաշտն Նախճաւանի ի ձմերան ժամանակի:
| 38:22 When Heraclius saw that they had put him between the two, he turned against the army to his rear. He struck promptly with force, and routed them. He marched through Tsłukk’, and escaped through the mountainous terrain to the plain of Nakhchawan in the winter- time:

38:23 Եւ Շահր Վարազ զաւրու իւրով, եւ Շահէնն իւրովք զերծելովք գնացին զհետ նորա: Իսկ նորա հասեալ անցանէ ընդ հուն գետոյն Երասխայ՝ յաւանն Վրնջունիս եւ բանակի յանդաստանս նորա: Եւ զաւրն Պարսից հասեալ՝ ոչ կարացին անցանել զգետովն այն աւրն:
| 38:23 Shahr Varaz with his army, and Shahēn with his survivors, pursued him. But he crossed the ford of the Araxes river at the town of Vrnjunik’ and camped in its fields. The Persian army came up, but were unable to cross the river that day:

38:24 Հասանէ Երակլոս ի Բագրեւանդ եւ անցանէ յԱպահունիս, եւ բանակի ի գեւղն, որ կոչի Հրճմունք: Եւ Շահր Վարազ սփռէր զզաւրս իւր. յԱղիովիտ, եւ ինքն այրընտիր եղեալ [Զ] հազար սպառազինաց վառելոց քաջաց, եւ երթեալ նստի յԱրճէշ գաւառի՝ դարանամուտ լինել, որպէս զի ի մէջ գիշերի անկցի ի վերայ բանակին Երակլի:
| 38:24 Heraclius reached Bagrewand, crossed into Apahunik’, and camped at the village called Hrchmunk’. Shahr Varaz scattered his troops over Ałiovit. He himself, having selected [6,000] fully armed warriors, took up a position in the province of Archēsh to lie in wait, so that he might fall on Heraclius’ camp in the middle of the night:

38:25 Ազդ լինի Երակլի ի ձեռն արձակելոյ լրտեսաց, եթէ եկն Խոռեամ եւ դարանակալ եղեւ ի վերայ քոյ: Յայնժամ Երակլոս ըստ նմին աւրինակի այրընտիր եւ ձիընտիր առնէ, եւ յարձակի ի վերայ նորա քսան հազարաւ, եւ հասեալ յԱղի, գտանէ զարսն յառաջմարտիկ հինգ հարիւրի: Նախ՝ զնոսա կոտորէ. եւ զերծեալ մի ոմն ի հեծելոցն՝ հասեալ ի յԱրճէշ գոյժ արկանէ Խոռեմայ, եթէ հասեալ է թշնամին ի վերայ քոյ, եւ կոտորեցին զզաւրն պէշոպա յԱղի:
| 38:25 By sending out scouts Heraclius learned that Khoṙeam had come and was lying in wait for him. Then Heraclius, in the same manner, chose elite men and elite horses, and attacked him with [20,000]. On reaching Ali he came across the vanguard of [500] men. First, he slaughtered them. But one of the cavalry escaped and brought the bad news to Khoṙeam in Archēsh: ‘ The enemy has attacked you; and they have slaughtered the vanguard at Ałi. ’:

38:26 Եւ բարկացաւ Խոռեամ ի վերայ առնն, հրամայեաց զնա կապել ոտիւք եւ ձեռաւք, եւ ասէ. «Երակլոս ցարդ յինէն փախստական գնայր. արդ եկեալ հասեալ եմ այսպիսի զինու, եւ նա յինէն ոչ փախիցէ»: Այն-ինչ նորա բանքն ի բերան էին, եւ նոքա հասին ստիպով ի վերայ նոցա, պատեցին զքաղաքն երեք կուսէ, եւ բորբոքեցին զնա հուրբ եւ այրեցին զզաւրացն բազմութիւնս:
| 38:26 Khoṙeam was angry at the man, and ordered him to be bound feet and hands, saying: ‘ Up to now Heraclius was fleeing from me. I have now arrived with such an army, and will he not flee from me? ’ Such words were still in his mouth when they suddenly attacked them, surrounded the city on three sides, set it on fire, and burned the multitude of the soldiers:

38:27 Են եթէ ելանէր ոք ի նմանէն ի փախուստ՝ անդրէն ըմբռնեալ սատակէին. եւ ապրեալ ոչ ոք ել ի նոցանէ, զի զամենեսին եկեր հուր ահագին: Բայց Շահր Վարազ զերծաւ՝ նստեալ ի վերայ նուաստ երիվարի. այնպէս զերծեալ գնաց առ զաւրս իւր, զոր ժողովեալ էր յԱղիովիտ գաւառի:
| 38:27 If anyone came out from it in flight, they immediately seized and slew him. None of them survived, because the terrible fire consumed them all. But Shahr Varaz escaped, riding on a sorry horse. In that way he escaped to his troops whom he had gathered in the province of Ałiovit:

38:28 Իսկ Երակլոս առ զաւար եւ զկապուտ բանակի նոցա, դարձաւ յաղթութեամբ մեծաւ, եւ երթեալ հասանէ ի կողմանս Կեսարացւոց. եւ Շահր Վարազ գնաց զհետ նորա փութանակի: Բայց զի յաւգնեալ էր զաւրն՝ խորհեցաւ բազում գաւառս ընդ մէջ արկանել, զի հանգիցէ զաւրն եւ կազմիցի. եւ գնացեալ ի կողմանս Ասիացւոց՝ անդ սփռեալ դադարեցին:
| 38:28 Heraclius took the booty and plunder of their camp, and returning with a great victory reached the area of Caesarea. Shahr Varaz pursued him rapidly. But because his army was weary, he decided to interpose [between them] many provinces so that his army could rest and reequip. Marching to the region of Asia, they spread out and lingered there:

38:29 Յայնժամ առեալ Երակլի զզաւրս իւր՝ դարձաւ յերկիրն Հայոց, անցեալ ընդ Շիրակ հասանէ ի հուն գետոյն Երասխայ, եւ անց ընդ գետաւն առ Վարդանակերտաւն աւանաւ, երթեալ թափեցաւ ի Գոգովիտ գաւառ: Եւ Ռոճ Վեհանայ եւ զաւրուն Պարսից կարծեցեալ զնոսա փախստական գնալ: Իսկ նորա ճանապարհ կալեալ ի Հեր եւ ի Զարեւանդ գաւառ, դէպ ուղիղ ի Տիզբոն ի վերայ Խոսրովու:
| 38:29 Then Heraclius took his army and returned to Armenia. Passing through Shirak, he reached the ford of the Araxes river; having crossed the river by the town of Vardanakert, he penetrated into the province of Gogovit. Ṙoch Vehan and the Persian army thought that they had fled away. But he continued his march to the province of Her and Zarewand, directly towards Ctesiphon in order to attack Khosrov:

38:30 Եւ իբրեւ միջամուխ եղեւ ի սահմանս Ատրպատական գաւառի՝ ապա ուրեմն լուր եղեւ Ռոճ Վեհանայ. առ զզաւրս իւր եւ գնաց զհետ նորա ի Նախճաւան քաղաք: Այնպէս փութով գնացեալ զտիւ եւ զգիշեր, մինչեւ չոգաւ եհաս մերձ ի նա: Եւ նորա անկեալ յայնկոյս լերինն Զարասպայ յերկիրն Ասորեստանեայց: Եւ սոքա պնդեցան զհետ նորա. եւ նոցա դարձեալ ընդ արեւմուտս՝ գնաց ի Նինուէ:
| 38:30 Only when he had penetrated the borders of Atrpatakan did the news reach Ṙoch Vehan. He took his army and pursued him to the city of Nakhchawan. In this way he marched rapidly day and night until he had come up close to him. The latter passed to the other side of Mt. Zarasp, into the land of Asorestan. They pursued him closely. But they turned to the west, and he went on to Nineveh:

38:31 Եւ եկեալ այլ զաւրս յաւգնականութիւն Ռոճ Վեհանայ ի դրանէ արքային՝ արք ընտիրք յամենայն թագաւորութենէն, եւ խառնեալ ի միմեանս՝ հետամուտ եղեն Երակլի: Իսկ Երակլոս ձգեաց զնոսա մինչեւ ի դաշտն Նինուէի, եւ դարձ ետ ի վերայ նոցա սաստիկ զաւրութեամբ. եւ էր բալ ի վերայ դաշտին: Եւ ոչ գիտացին զաւրն Պարսից զդարձն Երակլին ի վերայ նոցա, մինչեւ երթեալ խառնեցան ընդ միմեանս:
| 38:31 Further troops came to the support of Ṙoch Vehan from the royal court, men selected from the whole kingdom. Joining forces they pursued Heraclius. But Heraclius drew them on as far as the plain of Nineveh; then he turned to attack them with great force. There was mist on the plain, and the Persian army did not realize that Heraclius had turned against them until they encountered each other:

38:32 Եւ այնպէս զաւրացոյց տէր զողորմութիւն իւր ի վերայ Երակլի յաւուր յայնմիկ, մինչեւ հարեալ սատակեցին զնոսա իբրեւ զայր մի եւ սպանին զզաւրավարն ի պատերազմի: Եւ զմնացեալսն շրջափակ արարեալ՝ կամէին զամենեսեան սատակել: Իսկ նոցա բողոք կալեալ, թէ «Աստուածասէր եւ բարերար տէր, արա ի վերայ մեր ողորմութիւն, թէպէտ եւ չեմք արժանի ողորմութեան»: Յայնժամ Երակլոս հրամայեաց զնոսա թողուլ ի բաց: Եւ ինքն հրամայեաց Երակլոս ասպատակել ի վերայ երկրին:
| 38:32 In this way the Lord strengthened his mercy for Heraclius on that day, so that they massacred them to a man and slew their general in the battle. Surrounding the survivors, they wished to slay them all. But they made an appeal: ‘ God- loving and beneficent lord, have mercy on us, although we are not worthy of mercy’. Then Heraclius ordered them to be let go. And Heraclius ordered raids to be made over the land:
