1:0 Յետ բառնալոյ թագաւորութեանն Հայոց ի տանէն Արշակունեաց՝ ապա մարզպանք Պարսից կալեալ տիրէին աշխարհիս. եւ գլխաւորք Հայոց մեծաց ամրանային ի քարանձաւս ամրաշէն բերդիցս, ըստ տեղիս տեղիս եւ ըստ աշխարհս աշխարհս. եւ պարսկական բռնութիւնն զօրացեալ աճէր, եւ հարկապահանջք գունդքն ել եւ ելս առնէին սաստիկ խոշտանգանօք:
| 1:0 After the extinction of the Armenian monarchy from the house of the Arsacids, then Persian marzpans ruled the country. The princes of Greater Armenia fortified themselves in strong stone- built castles in every area and region, while the Persian tyranny waxed stronger and bands of tax gatherers made forays with terrible cruelties:

1:1 Ընդ նոյն ժամանակս խորհուրդ ի մէջ առեալ Շաւասպ Արծրունի եղբայր Վասակայ հօր Աղանայ Արծրունոյ, եւ խորհեցաւ զտիրելն Հայոց, եւ ելեալ գնաց զհետ անհանճար իմացմանց առ Պերոզ արքայ Պարսից, եւ յանձն առեալ ինքնակամ մոլորութեամբ զօրէնս մազդեզանց մոխրապաշտ յամառութեանց, եւ խնդրեալ յարքայէ զիշխանութիւն Հայոց։ Եւ նորա ըստ ցանկութեան սնոտի փառամոլութեանն կատարեալ զխնդիրն. եւ դարձեալ դառնայ ի Հայս, ընդ իւր ածելով մարզպան զՎնդոյ Պարսից մոգպետ:
| 1:1 At that same time Shavasp Artsruni, brother of Vasak the father of Alan Atrsruni, conceived the idea of ruling over Armenia. Pursuing this foolish plan he went to the Persian king Peroz, accepted by self- induced error the mad ash- worshipping Mazdean religion/ and asked the king for the principality of Armenia. [Peroz] fulfilled the request of his stupid vainglorious desire. Then he returned to Armenia, bringing with him as marzpan Vndoy, a chief magus of the Persians:

1:2 Եւ ընդ մտանելն նոցա յաշխարհս՝ վրդովեցին զուխտ քրիստոնէութեան, եւ փոյթ ընդ փոյթ ձեռնամուխ եղեն աւերել քանդել զեկեղեցիս, զտունս աղօթից կործանել. զսեղանս խորհրդականս փրկագործութեանն յատակել, հիմն ի վերայ տապալել զաւազանն մաքրափայլ լուսաւորութեանն Հոգւոյն Սրբոյ, դառնապէս չարալլուկ չարչարել զքահանայս յպաշտօնեայս նորոց Կտակարանաց, զարս եւ զկանայս մատնել ի բանտս ի խոշտանգանս ծանրաբեռն հարկապահանջութեամբ, զի այնու դիւրաւ կարասցեն հերքել մերժել ի բաց կալ ի սուրբ հաւատոյ պարկեշտ կրօնից քրիստոնէութեան:
| 1:2 When they entered the country they threw the covenant of Christianity into turmoil. Zealously they set their hands to ravaging and razing churches, destroying houses of prayer, overthrowing altars of the sacrament that works salvation, completely demolishing the font of the glorious illumination of the Holy Spirit, bitterly and cruelly torturing the priests, ministers of the New Covenants, casting men and women into prison and torments in their onerous demands for taxes. Their purpose in this was to be able all the more easily to persuade [the Armenians] to renounce and abandon the holy faith of the pure Christian religion:

1:3 Եւ բազում այն էր որ մարտիրոսական ճգնութեամբ վկայեցին, քան որք դրդուեցան, առ ոչինչ համարելով զյափշտակութիւն ընչիցն եւ ստացուածոց եւ զմահս դառնագոյնս։ Եւ հասեալ Շաւասպայ Արծրունւոյ ամբարշտի յԱրտաշատ հանդերձ մարզպանաւն՝ շինեն ի դուռն քաղաքին զորմզդական մեհեանն, եւ զկրակապաշտութեան մոլութիւն բորբոքեն ի նմա. եւ կայր աշխարհս ի մեծ վտանգաւոր աղէտս:
| 1:3 Many more were those martyred with heroic endurance than those who wavered, regarding as naught the seizure of their goods and possessions and cruel death. After the impious Shavasp Artsruni had reached Artashat with the marzpan, they built in Dvin a temple to Ormizd and lit therein the fire of their erring worship. So, the country was in great and dangerous distress:

1:4 Այս լուր դառնութեան եհաս առ մեծն Վարդան Մամիկոնեան, որ էր ամրացեալ ի Տորոսականն Զռայլ։ Եւ առ չհանդուրժել այնքան եկեալ հասեալ վտանգաւոր նեղութեանցն, եւ գազանեղէն զայրացմամբ մրմռեալ յոգի իւր ի վերայ կորստեան սուրբ հաւատոյս եւ կործանման աշխարհիս Հայոց՝ փութացոյց գիր պաղատանաց առ Տաճատ Ռշտունեաց տէր եւ առ Վախրիճ Անձաւացեաց տէր, զեկուցանել նոցա զեղեալսն:
| 1:4 This bitter news reached Vardan Mamikonean the Great, who had fortified himself in Zṙayl in the Taurus. Unable to endure such perilous oppression as had been inflicted [on Armenia], and roaring in his soul with ferocious anger over the destruction of the holy faith and the ruin of Armenia, he hastily sent a letter of complaint to Tachat, lord of the Ṙshtunik’, and Vakhrich, lord of the Andzavats’ik’, to inform them of what had happened:

1:5 Եւ նոքա թափառնակի անյապաղ հանդերձ իւրաքանչիւր զօրու եկին հասին առ մեծն Վարդան, եւ զզօրս լեռնակողմանն ընդ իւրեանս ածելով, ոչինչ աւելի քան զհազար եւ երկերիւր այր, եւ յանկարծօրէն յեղակարծ երագութեամբ հասին ի վերայ Շաւասպայ եւ մարզպանին Վնդոյի:
| 1:5 Immediately, without delay, they joined the great Vardan with their forces, bringing with them the troops from the mountains, no more than twelve hundred men; and with unexpected rapidity they suddenly attacked Shavasp and the marzpan Vndoy:

1:6 Եւ քանզի էին բանակեալ ի խառնուրդս Երասխայ եւ Մաւրին մեծի՝ պատահի յառաջ Շաւասպ Արծրունի, յորոյ վերայ կալեալ եւ կանչեալ քաջն Վարդան իբրեւ զառիւծ, իբրեւ կորիւն առիւծու, եւ առ ուժոյ եւ երագութեան ձեռինն ի վերայ ձգեալ զմիողնին՝ յերկուս կտրէ զՇաւասպն:
| 1:6 As they were encamped at the junction of the Araxes and Metsamawr, Shavasp Artsruni advanced against them. But on him fell the valiant Vardan, roaring like a lion or lion cub; drawing his one- edged [sword] with force and rapidity he sliced Shavasp in two:

1:7 Իսկ Տաճատ եւ Վախրիճ ի մէջ փակեալ զմարզպանն եւ զորդի նորա զՇիրոյ՝ ձերբակալ արարեալ ածեն ի Դուին, եւ հուր կրակարանին բորբոքեալ՝ աստուածակէզ արարին զնա յորմզդական մեհենին. եւ զՇիրոյ կախեն զփայտէ ի վերայ կրակարանին. եւ զարսն գետավէժս եւ սրախողս արարեալ վատնեն, եւ զփախստեայսն տանին անցուցանեն յայնկոյս քան զքաղաքն Նախճաւան, եւ ինքեանք դառնան մեծաւ յաղթութեամբ:
| 1:7 But Tachat and Vakhrich, having surrounded the marzpan and his son Shiroy, captured them and brought them to Dvin. In the temple of Ormizd they had [the marzpan] consumed by his god in the blazing fire of the pyraeum; above the pyraeum they hung Shiroy on a gibbet. The garrison they drowned in the river or put to the sword, while the fugitives they pursued beyond the city of Nakhchavan; then they returned victoriously:

1:8 Եւ քանդեն աւերեն զմեհեանն եւ յատակեալ զտեղին՝ շինեն նորին քարամբք զմեծ եկեղեցին զսուրբ Գրիգորն ի Բլուր տեղւոջն, եւ փոխեն անդ զկաթողիկոսն Հայոց զԳիւտ. եւ շինեն նախարարքն Հայոց իւրաքանչիւր պալատս արքունականս եւ դաստակերտս յականաւորս, եւ զքաղաքն որմափակօք պարսպեն, եւ խաղաղեցուցանեն զերկիրս:
| 1:8 They demolished the temple and, razing the site to the ground, built with the same stones the great church of Saint Gregory at the place Blur. There they transferred the Catholicos of Armenia, Giut. The Armenian nobles each built royal palaces for themselves and splendid estates; the city they defended with an encircling wall, and they brought peace to the land:

1:9 Իսկ զթագաւորաբնակ տեղին մեծին Տրդատայ տան ի ձեռս Վահանայ Արծրունւոյ՝ շինել նմա տուն թագաւորաց, արարս պատրաստութեամբ. քանզի խորհեցան թագաւորեցուցանել զնա ի վերայ Հայոց, զի էր այր սրտեայ եւ ուժեղ, քաջախորհուրդ եւ իմաստնախորհ, խոնարհ, առատաձեռն եւ զուարթամիտ:
| 1:9 The royal residence of Trdat the Great they entrusted to Vahan Artsruni, for him to build a mansion [fit] for kings— acts in preparation, since they planned to make him king over Armenia as he was a spirited and powerful man, shrewd and wise, humble, liberal, and quick- witted:

1:10 Բայց յետոյ անմիաբան գտեալք նախարարքն Հայոց՝ թողին զոր խորհեցանն վասն թագաւորելոյ Վահանայ, եւ անցին գնացին առ մեծն Վարդան. գնաց եւ Վահան զհետ նախարարացն առ Վարդան յառաջագոյն, տալ նմա զվերակացութիւն Հայոց. եւ եղեն հնազանդեալ նմա զամենայն աւուրս Վարդանայ:
| 1:10 But after the Armenian nobles became disunited, they abandoned their plans for making Vahan king and went over to Vardan the Great. Following the nobles, Vahan too went at the very beginning to Vardan, who gave him the supervision of Armenia. And they obeyed him all the days of Vardan:

1:11 Բայց արքայն Պարսից հեռացեալ պատերազմաւ ի Քուշանն ի դուռն Ճորայ. եւ երկիրս Հայոց յապահովանայր ի հինիցն Պարսից. եւ անդ սպանանի արքայն ի Քուշանաց, եւ թագաւորէ ընդ նորա Յազկերտ:
| 1:11 But the Persian king went away to wage war against the Kushans at the Chor Pass, so the land of Armenia was free from Persian raids. The king was killed there by the Kushans, and Yazkert ruled in his stead:

1:12 Եւ սկսաւ ոգորել ընդ իշխանս Հայոց մեծաց խորխտանօք, որպէս ցուցանեն յիշատակարանքն առաջնոց պատմագրաց, զաւերումն Հայոց եւ զյաճախել նեղութեանցն եւ զանթիւ բազմութիւն վկայից, որք վասն Քրիստոսի նահատակեցան, եւ զքաջապէս արիանալ սրբոց քահանայիցն, եւ անդ զբարիոք պատերազմն պատերազմեալ ի մեծ անապատին յԱպար աշխարհին, եւ որ ինչ այլն ամենայն. զոր աւելորդ համարիմ երկրորդել զմիանգամայն ասացեալսն:
| 1:12 He began to assail the nobles of Greater Armenia defiantly, as the records of previous historians indicate: the ravaging of Armenia, the multiplication of oppression, the numberless multitude of martyrs who died heroically for Christ, the brave valour of the holy priests, the good fight they fought there in the great desert of Apar, and all the rest. I consider it superfluous to repeat what has already been described:

1:13 Բայց իբրեւ եղեւ մեծ պատերազմ սրբոյն Վարդանայ ընդ Մշկանին եւ ընդ զօրս Պարսից ի յԱւարայրեան դաշտին, յԱրտազական գաւառին. եւ անդ յԱստուած խրախուսեալ սուրբ աստուածաբանակ զօրացն Հայոց՝ կատարեցան ի Քրիստոս:
| 1:13 When the great battle took place between Saint Vardan and Mshkan and the Persian army on the plain of Avarayr in the province of Artaz, emboldened by God the Armenian troops, like holy and divine warriors, were martyred in Christ:

1:14 Եւ անդ Վահան Արծրունի խոյակապ եւ յականաւոր քաջամարտութեամբ ընդ սրբոյն Վարդանայ ճակատ առ ճակատ վառեալ զպատերազմն, իբրեւ հուր ընդ եղէգն ճեմելով ի մէջ քաջ ախոյեանացն Պարսից:
| 1:14 There Vahan Artsruni, with splendid and outstanding bravery, fought side by side with Saint Vardan, pressing into the midst of the valiant Persians like a fire through reeds:

1:15 Եւ իբրեւ ռազմ երկոցունց կողմանցն խռնեցաւ, եւ ձախոյ կողման թեւն Հայոց պարտել սկսաւ, եւ սրբոյն Վարդանայ մտրակեալ զերիվարն ի փախուստ զախոյեանսն Պարսից դարձուցեալ եւ զկողմն իւրոյ ձեռին գնդին զօրացուցեալ՝ անդ Վահան Արծրունի ընդմիջեալ զգունդն Պարսից դարձուցանէ ընդդէմ Վարդանայ. եւ անյապաղ մինչ այս մինչ այն՝ նոցա հարեալ ընկեցեալ ի զօրացն Պարսից գունդ մի հարուստ արք [ՃԽ] իբրեւ:
| 1:15 When the two sides had joined battle and the left wing of the Armenians began to be overcome, Saint Vardan, spurring his horse, turned the Persian champions to flight and strengthened the troops of his own division. Then Vahan Artsruni intervened; he turned the Persian force opposing Vardan. Rapidly a large number of Persian soldiers were struck down one by one, about [140] men:

1:16 Ի վեր կառուցեալ զաչս սրբոյն Վարդանայ՝ տեսանէ զանօրէնն Վասակ Սիւնեաց տէր, եւ զհետ նորա աճապարեալ արկանեն զնա ի յամրափակ զինեալ վաշտն ի մէջ փղացն. եւ քաջն Վահան Արծրունի ընդ նմա նիզակակցեալ՝ մեռանին ի միասին քաջքն եւ ընտիրքն, մեծ նահատակք Վարդան եւ Վահան, եւ զվկայիցն անուն ժառանգեալ կատարեցան ի Քրիստոս սուրբ գունդն Հայոց, [ՈՂԶ] ոգիք։ Եւ պատմի այս ի համառօտութեան Աբրահամու Խոստովանողի:
| 1:16 Raising his eyes, Saint Vardan saw the impious Vasak, lord of Siunik’. Rushing after him they attacked the strongly armed batallion standing among the elephants. The valiant Vahan Artsruni supported [Vardan], and together they died— the valiant and elect noble warriors Vardan and Vahan. Gaining the name of martyrs, [696] men of the holy Armenian army were perfected in Christ. And this is narrated in the abbreviated account of Abraham the Confessor:

1:17 Բայց թէ է՞ր աղագաւ պատմութիւն վկայութեան Վահանայ ոչ է գրեալ ի գիրս պատմագրի՝ ստուգապէս առանց յերկուանալոյ ցուցանեմ քում ուսումնասէր քաջահմտութեանդ:
