6:0 Վասն պատերազմին Բագարատայ իշխանին Հայոց եւ Մուսէի եւ յաղթութեանն ի ձեռն Աշոտոյ Վասպուրական իշխանին, զի եկն զօրավիգն Բագարատայ:
| 6:0 Concerning the war between Bagarat, prince of Armenia, and Muse; and his victory through Ashot, prince of Vaspurakan, who came to Bagarat’s aid:

6:1 Ի ժամանակին յայնմիկ էր խռովութիւն մեծ ի մէջ Բագարատայ եւ Մուսէի։ Եւ զօրաժողով եղեալ Մուսէի պատճառաւ հարկաց արքունի՝ եկն եմուտ յերկիրն Տարօնոյ, տալ պատերազմ ընդ Բագարատայ:
| 6:1 At that time there was a great disturbance between Bagarat and Musē. On the pretext of the royal tribute Musē had gathered troops and come to the land of Tarōn to wage war against Bagarat:

6:2 Եւ կուտեալ զբազմութիւն զօրացն մերձ ի քաղաքն որ էր ձմերոց իշխանին Հայոց՝ անցանէր բանակէր ամենայն զօրօք իւրովք. գունդ կազմեալ ռազմ արարեալ զբոլոր դաշտաձեւ հովիտն ի ներքս փակէր, վառեալք զինու եւ ամենայն պատրաստութեամբ ընդդէմ գնդին Հայոց:
| 6:2 Bringing up the host of his army near to the city which was the Armenian prince’s winter quarters, he camped with all his troops. Forming ranks, he drew out his line and closed off the whole of the flat valley. They were armed and fully prepared to face the Armenian army:

6:3 Իբրեւ ետես իշխանն Հայոց զզօրսն Տաճկաց եկեալ կազմութեամբ, հայեցեալ եւ յիւրեանց սակաւութիւնն՝ գիր պաղատանաց փութանակի տայր առ քաջ նահատակն Աշոտ իշխան, զի թէ հնար իցէ՝ անյապաղ երագութեամբ անձամբ իւրով եւ զօրու եւ զինու ձեռնտու լիցի հասանել յօգնականութիւն նմա:
| 6:3 When the Armenian prince saw the Muslim army drawn up and compared it with the paucity of his own troops, he hastily sent a begging letter to the valiant warrior prince Ashot, asking him if possible to come to his aid promptly and rapidly in person and with an army and arms:

6:4 Իբրեւ յանդիման եղեն դեսպանքն մեծ իշխանի Աշոտոյ, եւ ընթերցաւ զգիր պաղատանացն եւ զյիշատակարան նախնեացն, եւ զմերձաւորութիւն հարազատութեանն եւ զկապակցութիւն ուխտին որ ընդ միմեանս երդմամբք հաստատեալ սուրբ Աւետարանաւն եւ տէրունական նշանաւն՝ համագունդ ժողով առնէր ամենայն աշխարհին եւ ամենայն նախարարօք Վասպուրական տէրութեանն:
| 6:4 After the messengers had appeared before the great prince Ashot and he had read the begging letter and codicil of the nobles [which mentioned] their close relationship and the bond of the pact which they had confirmed between each other with oaths on the holy gospel and the Lord’s cross, then he raised the entire forces of the whole land with all the nobles of the principality of Vaspurakan:

6:5 Փութանակի եւ վաղվաղակի իւրաքանչիւր զօրօք անդր հասանէին՝ իշխան Աշոտ եւ եղբարք իւր Գուրգէն եւ Գրիգոր զօրօք իւրեանց, եւ ի տոհմէն Արծրունեաց՝ Վահան եւ Վասակ եւ Մուշեղ եւ Ապուպէլճ եւ Գուրգէն եւ Վասակ եւ Ապուջափր եւ Մուշեղ եւ Ապումայեայ եւ Վասակ եւ Վահան եւ Համազասպ եւ Վասակ որդի Գրիգորի եւ Ապումկդէմ եւ Մեհուժան եւ Գրիգոր, սոքա ամենեքին արք [ԺԶ] ի տանէն Արծրունեաց զօրօքն իւրեանց:
| 6:5 Immediately there reported in haste, each with his own troops: Prince Ashot and his brothers Gurgēn and Grigor with their forces; from the Artsruni family, Vahan and Vasak and Musheł and Apupelch and Gurgēn and Vasak and Apujap’r and Musheł and Apumayeay and Vasak and Vahan and Hamazasp and Vasak, son of Grigor, and Apumkdēm and Mehuzhan and Grigor— these all amounted to sixteen men from the house of the Artsrunik’ with their troops:

6:6 եւ ի տանէն Բագրատունեաց Թոռնկայ որդի զօրօք իւրովք:

| 6:8 from the family of the Gnunik’, Grigor son of Hazir with six more relatives and their troops:

6:9 ի տոհմէն Ընտրունեաց Արտաւազդ [Է] հարազատօք եւ զօրօք իւրեանց:
| 6:9 from the family of the Ĕntrunik’, Artavazd with seven relatives and their troops:

6:10 եւ այլք ի նախարարացն Վասպուրական իշխանին, Սմբատ Ապահունի, Գրիգոր Քաջբերունի, Վահան Հաւնունի, սեպուհն Դաւիթ, Գազրիկն Ապուհարազ, Թոդորոս Վարազխ, Խոսրով Վահեւունի, Խոսրով Ակէացի, Վարդան Գաբայեղէն, Սմբատ Մարացեան, սեպուհ մի Սահակ, Պատրիկն Անձեւացի, Գորգ Հարմացի, Դաւիթ Գունդսաղար:
| 6:10 And there were others from among the nobility of the princes of Vaspurakan: Smbat Apahuni, Grigor K’ajberuni, Vahan Havnnni, the lesser noble Davit’, Gzrik Apuharaz, T’odoros Varazkh, Khosrov Vahevuni, Khosrov Akēats’i, Vardan Gabayełen, Smbat Marats’ean, a lesser noble Sahak, the patrik Andzewats’i, Gorg Harmats’i, Davit’ Gundsałar:

6:11 եւ այլ բազումք յազատ տանէ, իւրաքանչիւր զօրօք գումարեալ, ի մի վայր խաղացեալ՝ գնացին հասին յայն վայր, մինչ նոքա գունդ առ գունդ ընդդէմ միմեանց ճակատեալ կազմէին զռազմն, եւ փողքն գոչէին եւ դրօշքն տարածանէին եւ նշանքն փողփողէին, վահանաւորքն եւ նիզակաւորքն գոչէին, այրուձին այսր անդր վազս առնէին եւ ախոյեանքն յարձակէին, կապարճակիրքն աղեղանցն յուրային:
| 6:11 And many others of knightly rank gathered, each with their troops. Marching together, they reached the battlefield while the two forces were being drawn up in line facing each other; the trumpets were sounding, the flags were waving and the standards were flashing, shield bearers and lancers were shouting, the cavalry was galloping hither and thither, the champions were making forays to attack, and the archers were flexing their bows:

6:12 Եւ մինչդեռ զայսքան եւ զայսօրինակ մարտն գրգռէր՝ ահա յանկարծակի հասանէր քաջն մեր Աշոտ. եւ միախուռն յանդուգն յարձակմամբ դիմեցին ի վերայ այլազգեացն, եւ ի դիմի հարեալ միմեանց՝ այր զախոյեան իւր յերկիր կործանէր:
| 6:12 While the battle was being fomented in this manner, suddenly our valiant Ashot arrived. In a dauntless assault they fell on the Muslims and set on each other, one champion striking the other to the ground:

6:13 Զաչս ի վեր ամբարձեալ իշխանն Աշոտ՝ ետես զմի ոմն հարեալ ի զօրաց իւրոց. գոչեաց առիւծաբար, յարձակեցաւ ի վերայ ընտիր այրուձիոյն, եւ զաջ թեւն բեկեալ՝ զձախոյ կողմամբն արկանէր, եւ սրոյ ճարակ զամենեսեան տային, խիզախելով իբրեւ զքաջ նահատակս. իբրեւ զարծուիս կանչելով, իբրեւ զկորիւն առիւծուց ի վերայ որսոյ հասեալ բեկանէին։ Եւ առ յոյժ յանդուգն յարձակմանն բազում այն լինէր, զոր ձիովքն ընթադրեալ դիաթաւալ կացուցանէին, քան զոր սրովն սատակէին:
| 6:13 When Prince Ashot raised his eyes he saw one of his troops being struck. Roaring like a lion, he rushed on the elite cavalry and broke its right wing, turning it round on the left. The Armenians made them all fodder for the sword; they attacked like brave heroes, roaring like eagles or lion cubs falling on their prey. From the violence of the attack there were many more whom they trampled down as corpses to the ground with their horses than whom they slew with the sword:

6:14 Եւ ոչ ոք գտանէր ամենեւին ի կողմանէ թշնամեացն որ կարէր կալ ընդդէմ նոցա, եւ ոչ մի ոք. այլ մնացեալքն ի սրոյն փախստական էին յամուրս մայրեացն։ Եւ կէսքն հասանէին մինչ ի շահաստան Բաղէշ, թողեալ անդէն զբուն բանակն:
| 6:14 No one could be found on the enemies’ side who could resist them, not a single person. Those who survived the sword fled into the dense forests. Some even reached the capital Bitlis, having abandoned their own camp:

6:15 Իսկ իշխանքն զհետ մտեալ փախստէիցն անկելոցն յամուրսն՝ ածեն մերձ ի պաշարումն զքաղաքն եւ զամրոցն, մինչ ելեալ արտաքս տիկինն ի հետիոտս լի հառաչանօք՝ բաւական համարել զգործ նահատակութեանն, զոր ետ Աստուած ի ձեռս Աշոտոյ. եւ համոզեալ ի միջի նոցա յուղարկել զնոսա, զի էր քոյր Բագարատայ:
| 6:15 But the princes pursued those who had fled into the fortified places and closely besieged the city and fortress, until its mistress came out on foot, full of lamentation, [asking] them to reckon as sufficient the deeds of valour which God had granted them through Ashot. She persuaded them to let them [the fugitives] go their way— for she was Bagarat’s sister:

6:16 Եւ նոցա ի գլուխ հանեալ զգործ պատերազմին՝ դառնան զօրքն Հայոց մեծաւ յաղթութեամբ, եւ յաւարի առնուին զբանակետղն, դիակապուտ առնէին, ժողովէին աւար բազում, եւ կուտէին արծաթ եւ ոսկի յոյժ եւ զզէնս պատենազարդս, զզարդս եւ զզէնս արի արանց եւ զընտիրս երիվարաց եւ զզարդս նոցա. եւ դառնային մեծաւ ուրախութեամբ եւ անտրտում խնդութեամբ յիւրաքանչիւր տեղիս:
| 6:16 So, the Armenian troops put an end to the warfare, returning in great victory. They plundered the encampment and stripped the corpses; collecting much booty, they piled up masses of silver and gold, arms with decorated scabbards, the ornaments and weapons of brave men, select horses and their decorations. So, they returned to each one’s place in great joy and merry jubilation:

6:17 Յայնժամ իբրեւ ետես անօրէն զօրավարն Մուսէ, թէ ոչ ելին ի գլուխ խորհուրդ չարին յօժարութեանն, եւ հարան ի հարուածս մեծամեծս զօրք նորա՝ փութացաւ արձակել գուժկան յարքունիս, ծանուցանելով արքայի զոր ինչ գործեաց Աշոտ իշխանն Վասպուրական:
| 6:17 Then, when the impious general Muse saw that his wicked plan and inclination had not been fulfilled and that his army had suffered severe reverses, he made haste to send the bad news to court, informing the caliph of what Ashot, prince of Vaspurakan, had accomplished:

6:18 Դարձեալ պիտոյ է մեզ դառնալ առ ի վերագոյնսն, որ նախ քան զպատերազմն Աղձնեաց եղեալ են հանգամանք գործոց ի զօրացն Տաճկաց, եւ թէ ո՛րպէս եկաց ընդդէմ նոցա իշխան Աշոտ եւ վանեաց զնոսա սրով սուսերի։ Բանն զմեօք զանց առնէ. եւ ոչ վայելուչ է լռութեամբ եւ մոռացկոտ մտօք անփոյթ առնել զայնքան մեծիւ յաղթութեամբ, որ գործեցաւ ի ձեռն զօրացն Վասպուրական ազատանոյն:
| 6:18 Now we must return to earlier events: the details of actions brought about by the army of the Muslims before the battle of Ałdznik’, and how Prince Ashot opposed them and defeated them with the sword. The description surpasses our [ability], yet it is not appropriate to disregard in silence and forgetfulness such a great victory won by the troops of the nobility of Vaspurakan:

6:19 Ի դառնալն Ապուսէթի յԱսորիս, եւ Մուսէի հաւատալ զվերակացութիւն հարկաց արքունի, եւ ընդդէմ եկեալ յարքունուստ հազարապետ ոմն հարկաց, Ծովափի կոչեցեալ ամիրայ Ալայ անուն:
| 6:19 When Apusēt’ returned to Syria and entrusted the oversight of the royal taxes to Muse, he met coming from the court a certain vizier [in charge] of taxes, Tsovap’i by name, called Emir Ali:

6:20 Զնա յղէ Ապուսէթ ելանել յերկիրն Վասպուրական եւ անդէն մնալ զօրօք բազմօք, մինչեւ զբովանդակ զհարկս եւ զհասս արքունի յամենայն կողմանցն Հայոց առ նա բերցեն յիւրաքանչիւր սահմանաց։ Եկն եմուտ ի գաւառն Աղբագ, եւ ասպատակ սփռէր ընդ կողմանս կողմանս յերկիրն Վասպուրական, գերփէր, աւերէր, յափշտակէր, կապուտ կողոպուտ գործէր ընչից եւ ստացուածոց. յափշտակէին զայր եւ զկին եւ զժառանգութիւն նոցա:
| 6:20 Apusēt’ sent him to the land of Vaspurakan, to remain there with many troops until all the taxes and royal tribute were brought to him from every region of Armenia and each individual territory. When he came to the province of Ałbag, he spread raids throughout all parts of the land of Vaspurakan; he ravaged, plundered, and pillaged, sacking and despoiling goods and possessions. They [the Muslims] seized men, women, and their inheritance:

6:21 Առնէր ասպատակ եւ ի կողմն Անձաւացեաց տէրութեանն, եւ անտի եւս առնուին աւար ի պատճառս ռոճկաց պիտոյից այրուձիոյն:
| 6:21 Ali also made a raid in the direction of the principality of Andzevats’ik’, and there too they plundered on the excuse of needing provisions for the cavalry:
|
6:22 Յղէ առ նա իշխանն ի ձեռն հրովարտակի զայս ինչ. «Ելեր դու յաշխարհս Հայոց հրամանաւ արքունի՝ առնուլ զհարկս արքունի. մի՞թէ եւ հրաման ունիս յարքունուստ, գերել գերփել յաւեր դարձուցանել զաշխարհս մեր։ Բայց մեք քանզի ոչ երբէք ստունգանեցաք հրամանի թագաւորին եւ ոչ խափանիչ գտաք հարկաց արքունի, իբրեւ զապստամբս եւ զանհնազանդս եւ զստահակս ի ծառայութենէ տէրանց՝ արդ դու յարուցեալ գնասցես ի մի քաղաքացդ Հայոց, որպէս օրէն է աշխարհակալաց. եւ մեք տացուք քեզ զհասս հարկացն եւ հաճեսցուք զմիտս քո, եւ մի յանխնայ ասպատակելով յաւեր դարձուցանես զերկիր իմ:
| 6:22 The prince sent him a message as follows: “ You have come to Armenia at royal command to receive the royal taxes. Do you also have a command from court to capture, ravage, and ruin our country? Now we have never contravened the king’s order nor held back the royal taxes like rebels, disobedient and insubordinate to the authority of lords; so when you enter any Armenian city as governors have the right, we shall give you the [due] amount of taxes and satisfy you. But do not mercilessly ravage and destroy my land:

6:23 Նորա արհամարհեալ զառաքեցելովք, չվարկանելով արժանի պատասխանոյ, եւ նովին օրինակաւ սկսաւ շրջել ընդ բոլոր աշխարհս Վասպուրական։ Եւ հասեալ ի գեօղն Արճուճս՝ մնայր անդէն, եւ դիտակս թողոյր ի վերայ բլրոցն բարձրաւանդակաց:
| 6:23 But he disdained the message, deeming it unworthy of a response, and in the same fashion began to move around the whole territory of Vaspurakan. Reaching the village of Archuchk’ he stopped there and posted observers on the highest hills:

6:24 Բարկացաւ յոյժ իշխանն ընդ արհամարհանսն, եւ յոյժ զայրացեալ մեծաւ ցասմամբ՝ առնու զբազմութիւն ազատագունդ զօրաց ըստ տոհմս ազգաց իւրաքանչիւր զօրօք. եւ եհաս ի վերայ նորա վառեալ զինու սպառազէն երիվարաց ընտիր հեծելովք այրուձիոյ։ Եւ դէտն ազդ արարեալ զօրացն այլազգեաց՝ վառեն եւ նոքա ընդդէմ նոցա ի պատերազմ, եւ ի դիմի հարեալ միմեանց եւ հատանէին յերիս առաջս։ Զգունդն առաջին տուեալ լինէր ի ձեռս Գուրգինայ եւ Վահանայ Հաւնունոյ, որ եւ նիզակակից նմա էր:
| 6:24 The prince was much angered at the insult, and in his great wrath took the host of his knightly forces, each with his troops according to their various families, and attacked him, supported by the elite cavalry on their fully armed mounts. The scouts having warned the Muslim army, they too armed for battle against them [the Armenians]. As they faced each other, [the latter] were divided into three divisions: the first division was entrusted to Gurgēn and Vahan Havnuni, who was his companion- in- arms:

6:25 Եւ զգունդն երկրորդ ի ձեռս Գուրգինայ Ապուպելճի, եւ նիզակակից էր նորա Վահան Արծրունի։ Եւ գունդն երրորդ ի ձեռս իշխանին, որ եւ յարդարիչ պատերազմին։ Եւ յարձակեալ քաջութեամբ եւ արիական ձայնարկութեամբ՝ դիմէր ի վերայ թշնամեացն. ընդ առաւօտանալն սկսեալ՝ ի ժամս բովանդակ յաղթութիւն սատարեաց եւ ի փախուստ դարձոյց զբազմութիւն զօրացն Ովայի. սպանաւ ի խռան անդ եւ եղբայր Ովային եւ հեղմունք արեանց եղեն անհնարինք:
| 6:25 the second division to Gurgēn Apupelch, whose companion- in- arms was Vahan Artsruni; the third division to the prince, who was the commander- in- chief for the battle. Bravely attacking with a valiant shout, he rushed on the enemy. [The combat] began at dawn, and all day victory was on his side. He turned the host of Ali’s troops to flight; in the struggle Ali’s brother was killed, and frightful torrents of blood flowed:

6:26 Քաջապէս մարտուցեալ Գուրգէն եղբայր իշխանին եւ Վահան Հաւնունի՝ առին անուն յաղթութեան, անցուցանելով ընդ սուր զկողմն թշնամեացն. եւ զբոլոր ովիտն լնուն դիակամբք կոտորելոցն. եւ քամուածք ջրոյն որ ի ծործորացն ի վայր զեղուին՝ յարիւն դառնային ի բազմութենէ սպանելոցն. եւ ինքն Ովայ զերծեալ սակաւ ոմամբք գնաց փախստական ընդ կողմն Բերկրոյ։ Իսկ ի զօրացն Հայոց զսակաւս յաննշանից ոմանց սպանին, եւ զտէր Գուրգէն վիրաւորեցին:
| 6:26 Gurgēn, the prince’s brother, and Vahan Havnuni fought bravely, gaining a notable victory and putting the enemy’s side to the sword. The whole valley was filled with the corpses of the slain, and the streams of water that flowed down from the vales turned to blood from the multitude of those killed. Ali himself, escaping with a few men, fled in the direction of Berkri. But of the Armenian troops [only] a few insignificant men were killed, and Lord Gurgēn was wounded:

6:27 Եւ բարձեալ զօրքն Հայոց դիակապուտ արարեալ զզարդ եւ զզէնս զարի արանց եւ զքաջ երիվարաց, առեալ աւար բազում՝ գնան յիւրաքանչիւր տեղիս մեծաւ յաղթութեամբ:
| 6:27 Then the Armenian troops stripped the trappings and arms from the corpses of the valiant men and noble horses, collecting much booty, and went to each one’s place victoriously:
|
6:28 Եւ վասն այսր իրաց նենգութեամբ եւ չարակնութեամբ առլցեալ, մանաւանդ յերկիւղէ՝ կարի յոյժ գրգռեցաւ պատերազմ սաստիկ ի ձեռն Վասակայ Արծրունոյ. զի էր նորա գանձ բազում ի կարաս թաքուցեալ ի գետնափոր տան, ի ներքոյ դրացն ապարանից տան իւրոյ, եւ յերկիւղ կասկածանաց եղեալ, թէ իցէ ընդելուզեալ Տաճկաց՝ գտեալ զպահեստ գանձին ծախիցեն զզօրութիւն նորա:
| 6:28 But because of these events a violent war was fomented by Vasak Artsruni through treachery and malevolence, and more especially through fear. For he had hidden much treasure in a barrel in the ground below his house, under the door of his dwelling, and he was fearfully anxious that the Muslims might penetrate and by discovering his store of treasure would reduce his power to nothing:

6:29 Եւ ի հասանելն նորա առ թագաւորն՝ ունէր եւս ընդ ինքեան թուղթս լի ամբաստանութեամբ զնախարարացն որ բնակեալ էին ի Հայս, եւ բազում վնասս ի գործս արքունի կուտէին ի վերայ իշխանին Աշոտի. եւ քմազարդ բանիւք գրգռեն զթագաւորն ի վերայ իշխանին ի չարիս:
| 6:29 He came to the caliph bearing letters full of charges against the nobles living in Armenia and piling [blame for] much damage to affairs of state on Prince Ashot. By their capricious terms these stirred up the caliph in hostile fashion against the prince:

6:30 Նոյնպէս եւ բնակիչք Աղձնեաց անհանդուրժելիք լեալք անցիցն անցելոց, եւ առ զայսոսիկ յամբաստանելն՝ եւ կանայք կոտորելոցն հանդերձ խառնիճաղանճ ամբոխիւն լրբենի դիմօք, հոլանեալք եւ ի բաց ընկեցեալ զձեւ կանացի բնութեան, որպէս օրէն է նոցա, մանաւանդ տաճկական ազանց, եւ ի հետիոտս դիմեալք ի դուռն արքունի հասանէին:
| 6:30 Likewise, the inhabitants of Ałdznik’’, unable to endure their sufferings, joined in these calumnies. The wives of the slain, together with the common rabble, with unveiled faces, bareheaded, and having discarded the natural apparel of women, as is their custom especially for the nations of Muslims, came on foot to the royal palace:

6:31 Դարձեալ բողոք հարեալ, ձեռն զօձիւք արկեալ եւ զհերս խզեալ, զդէմս կեղեքեալ եւ ձայնս առեալ կական ողբօք արտասուալից հառաչանօք, վայ ի բերան առեալ եւ խիղբ՝ «վնասս եւ զբեկումն հարկաց արքունի եւ զկոտորումն զօրաց քոց Աշոտ գործեաց, եւ նա է պատճառ ամենայն ապստամբութեան Հայոց ի քումմէ թագաւորութենէդ, ասեն, ո՜վ քաջդ եւ հաւասար աստուածայնոց կարողութեան ինքնակալ, եւ ընդհանուր իշխեցօղ կենաց եւ մահու:
| 6:31 They complained, tearing their collars and pulling out their hair, scratching their faces and uttering loud shrieks in lamentation and tearful sighing, moaning and imploring: “ It is Ashot who has wrought this harm, the stopping of the royal taxes and the slaughter of your army. He is the cause of all the rebellion of the Armenians against your kingdom, Oh valiant ruler equal to the gods in power, who has general authority over life and death:

6:32 Եւ լցաւ ասացեալն ի Սոփոնիայ մարգարէէն, թէ«եղիցի յաւուր յայնմիկ ձայն ի դրանէ օցոտելոցն եւ գոյժ յերկրորդ դրանէն եւ բեկումն ի վերայ բլրոց։ Ողբացէք, բնակիչք կոտորելոցդ, զի նմանեցան ամենայն ժողովուրդք Քանանացւոց, եւ սատակեցան ամենեքին, որ հպարտացեալ էին արծաթով:
| 6:32 So was fulfilled the saying of the prophet Zephaniah: “ On that day there will be a voice from the gate of discord, and lamentation from the second gate, and crashing on the hills. Mourn, inhabitants of [the places of] those massacred; for all peoples have resembled the Canaanites; and all those who boasted in silver have been slaughtered:

6:33 Իսկ իբրեւ լուաւ թագաւորն զայս գոյժ աղաղակի հասեալ ի դուռն արքայի՝ մրմռեալ իբրեւ զառիւծ եւ իբրեւ զարջ տարակուսեալ՝ վառեալ լինէր իբրեւ զբոց հնոցի, իբրեւ զալիս ծովու դիզեալ կուտմամբ փրփրեալ ծիրանագոյն արիւնանման, ուժգին գոչելով անդնդաքակ յուզմամբ, իբրեւ զհեղեղատ յորդահոս ի ճայթմանէ կարկտահոս ամպոց:
| 6:33 When the caliph heard this tumult of lamentation at the royal gate, he roared like a lion or like a disturbed bear. He flamed like a fiery furnace, and foamed like the piled- up waves of the sea tinged with purple blood. He uttered a great cry like infernal rumbling from the abyss, like torrents of hail from the crash of the clouds:

6:34 հրախառն տոչորմամբ եռացեալ շուրջ զսրտիւն արիւնն՝ մաղձախառն բերմամբ յապուշ զմիտսն կրթեալ՝ կայր ի մէջ տարակուսի, խնդրէր գտանել զելն իրացն եկելոցն առ նա գուժկանացն, եւ կուտէր խումբս սինկղիտոսաց զամենայն իմաստունս Ասորոց եւ Բաբելացւոց տեսանել վասն գործոյս այսորիկ:
| 6:34 His blood boiled around his heart in a fiery glow. Carried away by choler, his mind stupified, he was plunged into great anxiety as he sought a solution to the events that had brought this grievous news to him. He assembled groups of counsellors and all the wise men of Syria and Babylonia to examine this matter:

6:35 Ընդ ժամանակս ընդ այնոսիկ էր կացեալ յաթոռ հայրապետութեան տէր Յոհաննէս կաթողիկոս Հայոց։ Եւ յաւէտ հրաշիւք յօրինէր զկարգս սրբոյ եկեղեցւոյ ուղղափառ առաքելական հաւատոց ի տէր Յիսուս Քրիստոս. դնէր ուխտս ընդ իշխանս աշխարհիս Հայոց՝ գնալ ըստ արժանի հաւատոցն Քրիստոսի, զի վկայեսցեն ըստ անուանն քրիստոնէութեանն եւ գործքն:
| 6:35 At that time the patriarchal throne was occupied by Lord Yovhannēs, Catholicos of Armenia. In most wonderful fashion he embellished the institutions of the holy church of orthodox, apostolic faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. He made covenants with the princes of the land of Armenia that they would walk worthy of Christ’s faith, and that their deeds would bear witness to the repute of Christianity:

6:36 Այլ նոքա թէպէտ եւ յանձն առնուին եւ մտադիւրութեամբ լսէին նմա՝ սակայն ոչ մեկնեալ լինէին ի ժանդագործ պղծութենէն զազրալից սոդոմական ախտիցն, եւ ըստ մեղաց տանն Արշակունեաց առաջին թագաւորացն մերոց հետազօտեալ լինէին, գնային ոտնխեթի, գայթ ի գայթս եւ աղտեղասէրս, մինչեւ զանբարկանալին Աստուած ի բարկութիւն ածել, ի սատակումն անձանց եւ ի կործանումն աշխարհի եւ յաւեր ժառանգութեան տանց հայրենի բնակութեանց.
36 քանզի գրեալ է, «թագաւոր արդար կանգնէ զաշխարհ, կործանումն է աշխարհի թագաւոր անօրէն»։ Եւ յորդորականիւ հրաժարեցուցանէր զնոսա ի բաց կալ յապիրատ եւ ի վնասակար գործոցն զոր գործէին, եւ սաստիկ կսկծեցուցանէր զնոսա բանիւք, ունելով իւր վկայ զԵսայի մարգարէ՝ յասելն:
| 6:36 But although they agreed and diligently heard him, yet they did not abandon the foul impurity of their execrable sodomistic vices; they followed the sins of the Arsacid house of our former kings. Gradually, step by step, they began to act in a filthy fashion until they brought mild- tempered God to anger— for the destruction of themselves, the devastation of the country, and the ruin of the patrimonial houses of their ancestral dwellings.
36 For it is written: “ A just king sets his country aright; the ruin of a country is an impious king.” Continuously he urged them to renounce and abandon the wicked and harmful deeds they were working; he attacked them with biting words, having as his witness the saying of the prophet Isaiah:

6:37 լուարուք, իշխանք Սոդոմայեցւոց, ունկն դիք օրինացն Աստուծոյ, ժողովուրդ Գոմորացւոց». զայս ասէր, ոչ զի սոդոմայեցիք էին, այլ զի ընդ նոյն մեղս սոդոմական պղծութեանն զառածեալ լինէին՝ սոդոմայեցիս կոչէ։ Որպէս եւ Եզեկիէլ մարգարէ ասէ, «հայր քո քանանացի էր եւ մայր քո քետացի:
| 6:37 Hear, princes of Sodom; consider the laws of God, people of Gomorrah.” This he said not because they were from Sodom but because they were committing the same impure and perverse sins as the Sodomites he called them Sodomites. As the prophet Ezekiel says: “ Your father was a Canaanite and your mother a Hittite:

6:38 Դարձեալ ի նոյն յարեալ՝ եւ այլ հոգաբարձութեան աշխարհի խնամ տանէր, ի մեղադրանս մատուցեալ մարգարէիւն հանդերձ սպառնալեօք, «իշխանք ձեր ապստամբք, ասէ, գողակիցք են գողոց, սիրեն զկաշառս, վրիժապարտք են։ Որբոց իրաւունս ոչ առնեն, եւ դատաստանի այրեաց ունկն ոչ դնեն:
| 6:38 He returned to the same charge, and mindful of the oversight of a different land he repeated the prophet’s reproaches with threats: “ Your rebellious princes,” he said, “ are accomplices of thieves; they love bribes and are worthy of punishment. They do not provide justice to orphans, and they disregard the rights of widows:

6:39 Դարձեալ ասէ, «թագաւոր արդար թագաւորեսցէ, եւ իշխանք իրաւամբք իշխեսցեն». եւ դարձեալ՝ թէ «դատաստանս արդա՛ր դատեցարուք, եւ ողորմութիւն եւ իրաւունս արարէք. քանզի առ ձեզ են բանք իմ, ո՜վ բռնաւորք», ասէ Սողոմոն. զի առ զօրաւորսն զօրաւոր դատաստան առաքէ Աստուած, իսկ խառնաղանճն ներելի ողորմութեան է։ Զայս եւ առաւել քան զսոյն խրատէր եւ ուսուցանէր սուրբ հայրապետն եւ քաջ հովիւն տէր Յոհաննէս կաթողիկոս Հայոց մեծաց:
| 6:39 Again he says: “ Let the king rule justly, and the prince govern by law.” And again: “ Let them make just judgments and work mercy and justice, because my words are directed to you, Oh tyrants,” says Solomon. For God sends powerful justice to the powerful, while the common people deserve mercy. Such and even more was the advice and teaching of the holy patriarch and valiant shepherd Lord John, Catholicos of Armenia:

6:40 Բայց նոքա ոչ վերակնեալք յօրէնս Տեառն, այլ ստացան իւրեանց անունկնդիր լսարանս, զչարագոյնն իժի եւ զանբժշկականն քարբի, արբեցան գինով յիմարութեանն ստացան աչս, որովք ոչ տեսանիցեն, եւ ականջս, որովք ոչ լուիցեն. մինչեւ եկին հասին ի վերայ մեր մեծամեծ չարիքս այսոքիկ եւ անկանգնելի գլորումնս, զոր յառաջ խաղացուցանելով զբանն՝ ցուցից յիւրում կարգի, մինչեւ կատարեցաւ ասացեալն ի ձեռն Եսայեայ մարգարէի:
| 6:40 But they paid no heed to the laws of the Lord and had ears only for the cruel viper and incurable asp. They were drunk with the wine of folly; they had eyes with which they would not see, and ears with which they would not hear. So eventually there fell upon us these terrible evils and irreversible downfall which, continuing [my] account, I shall indicate in its place. And the saying of the prophet Isaiah was fulfilled:

6:41 լսելով լուիջիք եւ մի՛ իմասջիք, տեսանելով տեսջիք եւ մի՛ գիտասջիք. զի թանձրացաւ սիրտ ժողովրդեանս այսորիկ, (ասա ի բուն) մինչեւ աւերեսցին քաղաքք ի բնակչաց, եւ տուն առ ի չգոյէ մարդկան. եւ դարձեալ ի գերութիւն մատնեսցի ժողովուրդ իմ, վասն ոչ ճանաչելոյ նոցա զՏէր. եւ բազում եղեն դիակունք նոցա վասն սովոյ հացի եւ ծարաւոյ ջրոյ:
| 6:41 You shall hear and not understand; you shall see and not realise. For the heart of this people has hardened until cities will be abandoned by their inhabitants and houses emptied of men. And my people will again be delivered into captivity because they did not know the Lord. And many were their corpses through famine of bread and thirst for water:

6:42 Արդ ի գալ միւսոյ ամին որ յոբելեանք [Զ] եւ ոլիմպիատք [ՀԲ], ընտիքտիոնք ի, որ է ըստ հայերէն թուականութեանն [Յ]՝ աներկբայ խորհուրդ ի մէջ առեալ թագաւորն սինկղիտոսօքն հանդերձ եւ ամենայն մեծամեծօքն Բաբելացւոց, զի զիշխանս աշխարհին Հայոց ի բաց բարձցէ յիւրաքանչիւր տէրութենէ, զի մեր լիցի ժառանգութիւն նոցա. եւ նախ ձեռս արկցէ յԱշոտ եւ ի տուն նորա եւ ի Բագարատ եւ ի տուն նորա, զի ասեն, թէ նոքա ի միջոյ բառնայցեն՝ ոչ ոք կարասցէ կալ ի կայի իւրում ունել զդէմ մեր:
| 6:42 At the beginning of the next year— which was the sixth jubilee and seventy- second olympiad and twentieth in diction, and the year [300] according to the Armenian reckoning— the caliph with his counsellors and all the Babylonian magnates irrevocably decided to remove the princes of Armenia from each one’s principality, so that their inheritance would become “ ours.” First he would lay hands on Ashot and his house and on Bagarat and his house; for if they were to remove them “ no one will be able to resist and oppose us:

6:43 Նոյնժամայն զօր գումարեալ, գունդ կազմեալ յընտիր ընտիր հեծելոց արանց զօրաւորաց, զօրօք եւ զօրագլխօք, եւ տայի ի ձեռս Յովսեփու ումեմն որդւոյ Ապուսէթի, եւ նմա յանձն առնէ զաշխարհն, փոխանակ հօր իւրոյ Ապուսէթի. զի մեռաւ նա ի ճանապարհի, ի կողմանս Ասորոց, յելանել նորա ի վերայ աշխարհիս Հայոց՝ չարչարել զսոսա որպէս խորհեցանն:
| 6:43 Immediately gathering an army and forming a force of elite cavalry, with soldiers and generals, he entrusted it to a certain Yovsep’, son of Apusēt’. And he made the country over to him in the stead of his father Apusēt’; for the latter had died on the journey, in the regions of Syria, when marching against Armenia to wreak harm on them as they had planned:

6:44 եւ ասէ, «եթէ աջողեսցին քեզ խորհուրդ մեր, զոր խորհեցաք ի վերայ Հայոց եւ իշխանաց նոցա, եւ ըստ ախորժակաց մերոց ի գլուխ ելանիցեն, որ ինչ կամք յօժարութեանց մերոց ըղձանայցեն, եւ կարիցես զիշխանս Հայոց կապանօք առ մեզ հասուցանել, մանաւանդ զիշխանն Վասպուրական զԱշոտ՝ քեզ եւ զաւակի քում տաց զերկիրն զայն ի ժառանգութիւն:
| 6:44 He said: “ If you carry out successfully the plan which we have resolved on against the Armenians and their princes, and matters turn out as we ardently desire, and you are able to bring to us in chains the Armenian princes— especially the prince of Vaspurakan, Ashot— then I shall give that land in inheritance to you and your descendants:

6:45 Արդ փութա՛, պնդեա՛, ե՛լ զհետ նոցա, եւ մի ինչ յայդոսիկ յերկուանայցես, թուլագոյն կալով մնալով յիրիդ յայդմիկ:
| 6:45 So hasten, be firm, pursue them. Have no hesitation in these matters; be not lax nor delay in this affair:

6:46 Յայնժամ մեկնեալ ի նմանէ զօրավարն, լցեալ խորհրդովք չարին հնարագիտութեամբ՝ եկն եմուտ ընդ կողմն Ատրպատական յԱղբագ գաւառ յերկիրն Վասպուրական, եւ բանակեցաւ ի յԱդամակերտ ոստանին Արծրունեաց, եւ անդէն սկսաւ ասպատակս սփռել, աւար առնել, կուտել առ ինքն զկապուտ աշխարհին յոյժ սաստկութեամբ:
| 6:46 Then the general left him, filled with the plans of his wicked cunning. He entered the province of Ałbag in the land of Vaspurakan through Atrpatakan and camped at Hadamakert, the Artsruni capital. From there he began to scatter raiders, to plunder and pile up for himself a vast amount of booty:

6:47 Կոչէր առ ինքն զիշխանն դիմօք սիրոյ խաղաղութեան, պատճառ հարկաց արքունի. բայց ազդ լինէր իշխանին ի նոյն գնդէն Տաճկաց՝ մի տեսանել զերեսս նորա, ծանուցանելով նմա՝ զոր ինչ խորհեալ էր վասն նորա:
| 6:47 He summoned the prince, apparently in friendship and peace, for the matter of the royal taxes. But the prince was warned by the same group of Muslims not to visit him, as they informed him of his plans against him:

6:48 Եւ իշխանն վառեալ զինքն բազում պատրաստութեամբ զինու եւ զօրօք ազատակոյտ գնդաւ իւրով, եւ ամենայն բնակ տերամբք իւրոյ իշխանութեանն, եւ խոյս առեալ շրջէր զկողմամբքն Մարդոստանի եւ Ձորոյհասկոյ, եւ դեսպանս առ զօրավարն արձակէր։ Գրէ հրովարտակ մի զայս օրինակ:
| 6:48 So the prince armed himself and made all preparations, with the troops of his noble entourage as well. With all the lords of his principality he withdrew, going round through the regions of Mardastan and Dzor- Haskoy, and sent messengers to the general. He wrote a letter in these terms:

6:49 Թագաւորաց աշխարհակալաց օրէնք են՝ մեծաւ հոգաբարձութեամբ խնամ տանել վասն շինութեան աշխարհի եւ թեթեւացուցանել զլուծ բռնութեան ծանրակի բեռանց, թուլացուցանելով զսաստկութիւն հարկապահանջ խոշտանգանաց, զի մի սպառ սպուռ տապալիցի զօրութիւն շինուածոյ աշխարհի, ի բաց ընկենլով զծառայական պաշտօնատրութիւն կողմնակալաց, եւ քաղաքային անհաւատար կամարարողաց, եւ հարկաց բերման եւ զօրաց. զի երկիր ի շինութեան լինելով եւ ի խաղաղութեան՝ եւ հարկք արքունի կանգուն երթիցեն:
| 6:49 It is the duty of kings who govern the world to watch over and care for the prosperity of the country, to lighten the tyrannous yoke of heavy burdens and soften the severity of painful demands for taxes, lest the productive capacity of the country be completely destroyed. They should remove repressive measures of governors, complaisant [but] faithless citizens, the burden of taxes and the military, so that the land may be prosperous and peaceful and the royal taxes come in regularly:

6:50 Զոր եւ մեք ակն ունիմք եւ քեզ զսոյն զայս կամել, եւ տեսանելով մեր զխնամարկութիւն բարի կամաց քոց ի վերայ աշխարհի, եւ զսէր երախտեաց որ առ մեզ՝ յօժարագոյնս եղիցուք եւ մեք մտերմութեամբ ծառայել եւ փութով մեծաւ կատարել զհրամայեալսն ի քէն»։ Բազում եւ այլ բանս ախորժականս եւ դիւրընկալս ըստ այսոցիկ կարգէր ի թղթի իւրում:
| 6:50 Such is our concern and [it is] for you to desire the same. So when we see your benevolent solicitude for the land and [your] friendly kindness towards us, we shall be most eager to serve you loyally and to fulfill your commands with great despatch.” Many other agreeable and acceptable expressions in similar terms he included in his letter:

6:51 Նա եւ մայր իշխանին Աշոտի, քոյր Սահակայ եւ Բագարատայ իշխանին Տարօնոյ, որ էր կին իմաստուն ի բանս եւ յիրս եւ յոյժ խոհեմագոյն միանգամայն եւ աստուածասէր՝ երթեալ ընծայիւք բազմօք յանդիման լինէր Յովսէփայն եւ խնդրէր զհաշտութիւն եւ զխաղաղութիւն հաստատել առ որդիսն իւր եւ առ բոլոր աշխարհն Վասպուրական:
| 6:51 Furthermore, the mother of Prince Ashot, sister of Sahak and Bagarat, prince of Tarōn, who was a woman wise in words and deeds, very intelligent and also pious, went with many gifts to meet Yovsep’, requesting him to establish a treaty and peace with her sons and the whole land of Vaspurakan:

6:52 Եւ նորա ընկալեալ զպարգեւն՝ կատարէր զխնդիրն։ Եւ առնու պատանդս արս անուանիս եւ պատուականս, եւ զմայրն Աշոտի դարձուցանէ մեծաւ պատուով. եւ ինքն անցանելով խաղաղութեամբ ընդ աշխարհն Վասպուրական սակաւատոյժ վնասիւք՝ զպատանդսն ընդ իւր առեալ տանի։ Եւ անցանելով ընդ գաւառն Բզնունական գայ մտանէ ի Խլաթ. քանզի կամէր անսալ ժամու դիպողագունի, զի որսայցեն նենգութեամբ խաբել:
| 6:52 He accepted the gifts and carried out her request. Taking as hostages renowned and honourable men, he sent back Ashot’s mother with great respect. He himself passed peacefully through the land of Vaspurakan with a minimum of damage, taking the hostages with him. Crossing the province of Bznunik’, he reached Khlat’. For he intended to await the most suitable occasion to ensnare [the Armenians] by deceit and trickery:

6:53 Իբրեւ եհաս ամիրայն ի Խլաթ՝ եմուտ բանակեցաւ յամրոցին որ ի քաղաքին։ Արձակէ առ Բագարատ կոչողս պատճենիւք հանդերձ, զի եկեսցէ առ նա առանց պատճառանաց եւ երկիւղի։ Գրեալ ի թղթի անդ՝ ի ձեռն նորա հաւատալ աշխարհիս Հայաստանեայց, զի ինքն երթիցէ յարքունիս, կեղծոտելով զսաստկութիւն ձմեռնային ժամանակին ի վերայ եղելոյ եւ զխստութիւն հիւսիսային օդոյն սառնամանեաց, անընդել զինքն այնոցիկ վարկանելով:
| 6:53 When the emir reached Khlat’, he entered the city and encamped in its fortress. Then he sent messengers to Bagarat with written invitations to come to him without excuses or fear. He wrote in the letter that he entrusted to him this land of Armenia so that he himself might go to court, using the severity of the winter season that had arrived and the fierceness of the freezing north wind, which he was afraid he could not endure, as his excuse:

6:54 Իսկ իշխանն Բագարատ, քանզի ոչինչ ունէր զկարծիս դրժանաց առ թագաւորն եւ առ զօրս նորա՝ ել գնաց անխիղճ համարձակութեամբ, տիրասէր խորհրդովք, կատարել զսպաս զինուորութեան, ըստ աստուածեղէն պատուիրանին եւ ըստ թագաւորական հրամանին, զհետ եկելոյ կոչնականացն, ոչինչ իմացեալ զպատրանս խաբէութեան նորա, որով վրիպեացն։ Բարձեալ եւս ընդ իւր զսուրբ կտակարանս աստուածաշունչ գրոց բազմութեամբ պաշտօնէից քահանայական դասուց:
| 6:54 So, Prince Bagarat, having no suspicion of faithlessness on the part of the king and his army, went with innocent frankness and loyal intentions to fulfil his military duty, in accordance with the divine command and the royal order. He followed the messengers, quite unaware of the treacherous trickery whereby he had deceived him, and took with him the holy covenants of the divinely inspired Scriptures with a host of ministers of the priestly ranks:

6:55 Եւ նորա ըմբռնեալ զնա եւ զամենայն ազգատոհմն նորա ի տանէ Բագրատունեաց եւ կապեալ երկաթեղէն կապանօք՝ խաղացոյց ի Սամառայ։ Եւ ինքն եկն ձմերել ի Մուշ քաղաքին Տարօնոյ, ունելով ընդ իւր զպատանդսն, եւ Վասպուրականի ի նախարարութենէն Արծրունեաց եւ յազատաց նորա։ Եւ զբնակիչս աշխարհին վարեաց ի գերութիւն, վաճառակուր առնել ի կողմանս Ասորոց եւ յամենայն սահմանս տէրութեանն Տաճկաց:
| 6:55 But [the emir] seized him and all his relatives from the Bagratuni house, bound them in iron bonds, and sent them to Samarra. He himself went to winter in the city of Mush, in Tarōn, keeping with him the hostages from Vaspurakan, both those of the Artsruni nobility and those of their knights. The inhabitants of the land he took into captivity, to sell them in the regions of Syria and all the area of the empire of the Muslims:

6:56 եւ զկէս գերւոյն ընդ իւրեանց ունելով ի քաղաքն, լինել իւրեանց ջրկիրս եւ փայտակոտորս. եւ չարչարէին զնոսա ի գործս խիստ սաստկասառոյց ձմերանն դառնութեան. եւ զերծեալքն փախստեայ անկանէին ի կողմանս կողմանս աշխարհաց, յաւեր դարձուցեալ զբնաւ աշխարհն, բայց ի լեռնայնոցն՝ որ յամուրս իւրեանց մնային ի լերինն Խոյթ անուանեալ:
| 6:56 But half of the captives they kept with them in the city to be their drawers of water and hewers of wood, causing them cruel torments in these tasks from the bitter winter cold. Those who escaped fled to various regions of the country. The whole country was devastated except for the mountain people who remained in their fortresses on the mountain called Khoyt’:
