15:1 Ընդ նոյն ժամանակս ընդարձակեալ բարերարին Աստուծոյ իշխանացն Հայոց՝ դարձան յիւրաքանչիւր բնիկ տէրութիւնս. եւ կէին յապահովս խաղաղացեալք եւ հնազանդեալք ընդ պետութեամբ իշխանաց իշխանի:
| 15:1 In those same times benevolent God allowed the Armenian princes to return each to their native principalities; they lived safely in peace, subject to the authority of the prince of princes:

15:2 Ընդ նոսին եւ երանելի եպիսկոպոսն Յոհաննէս եւ ճգնաւոր քահանայ Գրիգոր, մարտիրոսական հանդիսիւ ամբողջ զխոստովանողականն բերելով զանուն՝ զերծեալ ի բանտէն յոր տուանն՝ եւ գան հասանեն յերկիրս այս մեր, բերելով զաւետիս արձակման գերելոցն, որգունակ Խորէն եւ Աբրահամ խոստովանողքն Քրիստոսի, ի պարսկայինն զերծեալ լլկանաց դառնագոյն կրիցն՝ զընդարձակութենէ նախարարացն Հայոց մատուցին ողջոյնս աւետաբերս՝ դարձուցանել տեառն զգերութիւն ժողովրդեան իւրոյ:
| 15:2 Among them the blessed bishop Yovhannēs and the ascetic priest Grigor, bearing the full title of confessor for their testimonyas martyrs, were freed from the prison where they had been thrown. They reached our land, bringing the good news of the release of the captives— like Khoren and Abraham, confessors of Christ, who were freed from the cruel sufferings of their tortures in Persia and brought the happy news of the liberation of the Armenian nobles and the Lord’s restoration of his captive people:

15:3 Իսկ երանելի եպիսկոպոսին Յոհաննու ընտրեալ իւր առանձնակ միայնաստան տեղեակ, աղօթից միայն պարապեալ, ի բաց կալով յեպիսկոպոսական հովուապետութենէ:
| 15:3 Now the blessed bishop Yovhannēs chose for himself a separate eremitic spot, devoting himself entirely to prayer and leaving his episcopal rank:

15:4 Յորոյ տեղի մատուցին զՅոհան ոմն, այր հեզ եւ բարեպաշտօն, լցեալ երկիւղիւ Տեառն, պատշաճ առ վերակացութիւն եկեղեցւոյ Քրիստոսի:
| 15:4 In his place they appointed a certain Yohan, a gentle and pious man, full of fear of the Lord, fit for the oversight of Christ’s church:

15:5 Բայց սպարապետն Սմբատ եւ տիկինն Վասպուրական Հռուփսիմէ անդէն մնաց, եւ յաւելան ի մարտիրոսական հոլովսն:
| 15:5 But the sparapet Smbat and the princes of Vaspurakan remained there [in Persia] and were added to the rolls of martyrs:

15:6 Քանզի հարցեալ եւ բռնազբօսեալ զերկոսին գլխաւորին Տաճկաց, անունկնդիր լինելով ասացելոցն, եւ ի տեսչութենէ Աստուծոյ թողացուցեալ նոցա առանց վտանգից՝ որպէս հաճոյ թուիցի կեալ ի հաւատսն Քրիստոսի համարձակաբար. մեռան նոքա անդ եւ թաղեցան փառաւորապէս ըստ օրինի քրիստոնէից յուխտէ Յակոբկաց, որ անդ են հաւատացեալ ժողովուրդք, եւ զխոստովանողական անուն ստացեալ փառաւորեցան յերկրի եւ պսակելոց են ի Քրիստոսէ ընդ ամենայն սուրբս. ամէն:
| 15:6 For the leader of the Muslims interrogated and did violence to them both; but by the providence of God they were left to live openly wihout danger in the faith of Christ as they pleased. They died there and were buried gloriously according to Christian rite by the community of the Jacobites, who are the believing congregations there. Gaining the name of confessors, they were rendered glorious on earth and will be crowned by Christ with all the saints. Amen:

15:7 Իսկ Գուրգէն օր ըստ օրէ աճէր զօրութեամբ ի բազում քան թէ ի սակաւ տեղիս, զոր ի Տարօն եւ զոր յԱնձաւացիս եւ զոր յԱրզն եւ զոր առ ամենայն ուրեք, որպէս ցուցանեն յիշատակարանքն որք յառաջ քան զմեզ հոգացան, զոր ինձ աւելորդ թուի երկրորդել:
| 15:7 Gurgēn, however, daily increased in strength in numerous places— in Tarōn, Andzavats’ik’, Arzn, and everywhere— as the records which were kept before us indicate, and which it seems to me superfluous to repeat:

15:8 Բայց յետ բազում յուզիցն եւ պատերազմացն եհաս տիրել նմա Անձաւացեաց տէրութեանն զայս օրինակ:
| 15:8 So after many turmoils and battles he succeeded in bringing the principality of Andzavats’ik’ under his control in the following fashion:

15:9 Մուշեղ Անձաւացեաց տէր հիւանդացեալ զյետին կեալն, ունելով որդի ստնդեայ. եւ Դերանիկն խորհէր տիրել աշխարհին:
| 15:9 Musheł, lord of Andzavats’ik’, was ill and at death’s door. He had a son who was an infant, so Derenik planned to control the land:

15:10 Եւ ձեռագրեալ Մուշեղայ զամրոցաւն Նորաբերդ եւ շուրջ զսահմանսն՝ Դերանկին հաւատալ, եւ զայլ եւսն՝ որդւոյ իւրում ժառանգեցուցանել:
| 15:10 Musheł set in writing that he would entrust him with the castle of Noraberd and the surrounding territories, and that he would bequeath the other [lands] to his own son:

15:11 Եւ եղեւ ընդ մեռանելն տեառնն Անձաւացեաց, նորին տիկին Հեղինէ գրէ առ Գուրգէն, «եթէ հաճոյ թուիցին քեզ կնութեան, եւ կամիցիս քեզ զտիրելն Անձաւացեաց՝ մի վեհերեալ յապաղելով դանդաղկոտ լինիր եւ վերջանար զփութալն». եւ հաճոյ թուեցաւ Գուրգինայ խորհուրդք տիկնոջն Հեղինէի:
| 15:11 When the lord of Andzavats’ik’ died, his wife Helen wrote to Gurgēn: “ If it pleases you to marry [me] and you wish to rule over Andzavats’ik’, do not hold back, delay, be slow, or fail to make haste.” The plan of the lady Helen did please Gurgēn:

15:12 Եւ ելեալ գնաց եմուտ յամուրն Կանգուար, եւ կատարեալ զոր ինչ ախորժեացն՝ տիրեաց Անձաւացեաց մեծաւ զօրութեամբ:
| 15:12 He came to the castle of Kanguar, carried out his aims, and ruled with great authority over Andzavats’ik’:

15:13 Իսկ Դերանիկն գործ առնէր ի գիւտս հնարիմացութեան, եւ տարուբերէր յանձն իւր՝ գտանել զելս իրացն, որով կարիցէ հանել զամուրսն ի Գուրգինայ եւ տիրել աշխարհին:
| 15:13 But Derenik exercised great ingenuity and caused himself much anguish in endeavouring to find some means whereby he might wrest the castles from Gurgēn and control the country:

15:14 Եւ ի բազում յուզիցն եւ ի խնդրոցն եւ զօրաժողովն լինելոյ եւ պատերազմ ընդդէմ վառելոյ եւ զձեւ ամրական մաքառմանցն յարդարելոյ եւ բռնալիր ուժեղագոյն մեքենային բախմանց քարաձգութեանցն, զոր եւ ընդունայն աշխատութեամբ վարանեալ, անստնանելի մնալով ամրոցին՝ դառնայ յիւր իշխանութիւնն:
| 15:14 He wore himself out from his many troubles and endeavours, from gathering troops and preparing for battle, from fitting out for armed combat and setting up the powerful machine for hurling stones. Making this vain effort, but remaining unable to gain the fortress, he returned to his own principality:

15:15 Բայց զերկրորդ մասն Անձաւացեաց հանդերձ Նորաբերդ ամրոցաւն Դերանկին նուաճեալ ընդ իւր գործակալօք, եւ զՄարդաստան գաւառ զբուն բաժին տուեալ ցԳուրգէն, եւ նորա զիւր գործակալս թողեալ անդր:
| 15:15 However, Derenik did subject to himself half of Andzavats’ik’ with the fortress of Noraberd [which he held] by officials, and he gave to Gurgēn the province of Mardastan as his personal portion, while he left his own agents there:

15:16 Եւ զի ստեալ Դերանկին Գուրգենայ եհան անտի զգործակալսն՝ նոյն գունակ Գուրգէն հնարաւորեալ առնու զամրոցն եւ հանէ զնորա գործակալսն եւ միապետէ զտէրութիւնն Անձաւացեաց եւ խաղաղեցուցանէ զերկիրն եւ բնակէ յանհոգս յապահովացեալ ի հինից. շինէ եկեղեցիս եւ կատարէ տօն նաւակատեաց խաղաղութեան:
| 15:16 But since Derenik had been false to Gurgēn, he expelled the officials. And in like fashion Gurgēn found a way to seize the castle, expel his officials, and rule alone over the principality of Andzavats’ik’. He pacified the land and made it safe and secure from bandits; he built churches and carried out the ceremonies of dedication in peace:

15:17 Այս [Զ] ամ էր գերութեանն Հայոց, եւ [ՅԶ] նորուն թուականութեան:
| 15:17 This was the sixth year of the captivity of the Armenians, and the [306th] of their era:

15:18 Ի [ՅԷ] ամի Հայոց թուականութեանս եկն Աշոտ Վասպուրական իշխան ի գերութենէն:
| 15:18 In the [307th] year of the Armenian era Ashot, prince of Vaspurakan, returned from captivity:

15:19 Խոստացայ վերագոյնն գրել վասն Բուխայի մասնաւորաբար զվրիժուցն հատուցանել զպարտիս, այլ ոչ զբովանդակն:
| 15:19 I promised above to write concerning Bugha, in particular the exaction of vengeance, but not the whole story:

15:20 Ի դառնալն Բուխայի յարքունիսն, եւ կայր զյօնսն պռզտեալ, փքացեալ ուռուցեալ լի ամբարտաւանութեամբ՝ կոկոզաբանէր ի վերայ մեծամեծ գործոցն գործելոց, կարծէր իւրով զօրութեամբ զօրանալ ի վերայ կործանմանն Հայոց, եւ մոռացօնս եղեալ հատուցումն մեղաց մերոց ի ձեռանէ Տեառն, որպէս Իսրայէլին ի հնումն առ Սեդեկեաւ զՆաբուքոդոնոսորայն:
| 15:20 When Bugha returned to the court, he acted in a supercilious manner, was swollen and bloated full of arrogance; he would boast about the tremendous deeds he had accomplished, and suppose that by his own power he had presided over the destruction of Armenia— forgetful of the retribution for our sins inflicted by the Lord, as on Israel in times of old during the reign of Sedekia at the time of Nebuchadnezzar:

15:21 Կինն Սահակայ որդւոյ Իսմայէլի, զորոյ զհանգամանսն ցուցաք, զմեռանելն Սահակայ եւ զկնոջն հրապարակագոյժ լինել, վասն որոյ պատճառանաց սպանանի այրն նորա. զորոյ ցուցականութիւն պատմեալ գլխաւորին Տաճկաց Ջափրի:
| 15:21 We have indicated the details [of the story] of the wife of Sahak, a son of Ismael, the death of Sahak and his wife’s public lamentation of the reason for her husband’s murder, and her declaration to the leader of the Muslims, Jap’r:

15:22 Իսկ նա ըստ սովորակի ցանկասէր պղծալից անյագութեանն՝ խրոխտացեալ մրմռեալ յանձն գազանեղէն թունիւք առաւելեալ, բորբոքեալ տապախառն բոցով հեղուլ զմահածին թոյնսն ի վերայ Բուխայի. եւ յայտնի ոչ վայելչանայր կատարել զոր կամէրն, մի՝ վասն յաղթող մեծանուն գործոյն, նախատ անձին համարելով, երկրորդ՝ վասն վաշտիցն զօրութեան:
| 15:22 The latter, with his habitual licentious and foul insatiableness, waxed haughty and raged in an excess of ferocious poison. He flamed and burned like a furnace to spew out mortal poison on Bugha. But he did not enjoy an open execution of his desires— first, because of [Bugha’s] victorious and renowned accomplishment he thought it would bring opprobrium on himself; second, because of the battalions of the army:

15:23 Ապա յղէ զնա ի Խորասան, եւ նմա հաւատաց զվերակացութիւն աշխարհին. եւ ինքն Ջափր գործ առնէր առ սակաւ սակաւ մեկնել ի նմանէ զզօրսն՝ դիմօք յաշխարհս աշխարհս ասպատակ սփռելոյ:
| 15:23 So he sent him to Khorasan, entrusting to him the government of that land. Jap’r himself strove to remove the army from him gradually, ostensibly in order to send raids into various lands:

15:24 Եւ նոյնժամայն հրաման հասեալ յափփուսոփս յոմանս ի գաղտնիս՝ զրաւ առնել կենացն նորա. եւ իսկ եւ իսկ հրամայեալքն զկատարումն առնուին:
| 15:24 At the same time a command was secretly give to some people to deprive him of his life; on receiving the order, they directly carried it out:
