16:0 Վասն դառնալոյ Աշոտոյ իշխանին ի գերութենէն եւ վասն Վահանայ Արծրունւոյ:
| 16:0 Concerning the return of Prince Ashot from captivity, and Vahan Artsruni:

16:1 Ընդ այն ժամանակս ապստամբեալ ի պետութենէն Տաճկաց քաղաքացիքն, որում Կզուինն ասեն:
| 16:1 At that time the citizens of [the town] called Kzuin had revolted against the rule of the Muslims:
|
16:2 Իսկ առաջնորդին Տաճկաց զօր գումարեալ, այրուձի կազմեալ յընտրելոց զօրաց Ասորեստանի եւ Արաբացւոց, ընդ որս էր եւ քաջն մեր Աշոտ ախոյեանարձակ զօրութեամբ եւ ելեալ զհետ արքունի զօրուն. եւ զօրագլուխ կացեալ էր Մուսէ որդի Բուխայի:
| 16:2 So the leader of the Muslims gathered a force of cavalry from among the elite warriors of Asorestan and Arabia; among them was included our valiant Ashot with his heroic strength who joined the royal army. Musē, son of Bugha, was appointed general:

16:3 Նորա խոստացեալ էր առնել դառնալ Աշոտի յիւր բնիկ տէրութիւնն, ժամ տուեալ ի գլուխ հանել, յոր չոգանն՝ զգործ պատերազմին:
| 16:3 He had promised to bring about Ashot’s return to his native principality, fixing the time at the completion of the campaign on which they had set out:

16:4 Իբրեւ հասին ուր հանդերձեալն էին՝ եւ երկոցունց զօրքն անհուն բազմութեամբ յանդիման եղեն միմեանց, եւ ճակատ առ ճակատ զգործս պատերազմին յարդարէին, եւ քաջքն եւ հոյակապքն ելեւելս զմիմեամբք առնէին ախոյեանայարձակ խրոխտանօք:
| 16:4 When they reached their destination, the armies of both sides faced each other in immense numbers. Line prepared for battle opposing line; the most valiant and splendid outdid each other in boasts of prowess:

16:5 Անդանօր քաջն մեր Աշոտ զհիւանդութիւնն կեղծաւորեալ ի տեղւոջ օթոցին անկեալ դնէր, մինչ ակն ունէին յառաջանալ ի գործ պատերազմին:
| 16:5 There our brave Ashot, feigning illness, reclined in his tent while they were seeing to preparations for the battle:

16:6 Եւ ինքն զօրավարն Մուսէ ճեպէր շտապէր՝ փութալ առ պատերազմնն վառել, եւ նա եւս քան զեւս զկարծեցեալ հիւանդութեանն աճեցուցանէր զխստութիւն ցաւոցն ծանրանալն նմա:
| 16:6 Although the general Musē himself kept urging him to hurry and arm for battle, even more did he exaggerate the severity of his feigned illness and the grievousness of his pains:

16:7 Եւ մինչդեռ յայնմ մահիճսն կարծեալ հիւանդութեանն կեղծաւորէր՝ եւ ախոյեանարձակքն զմիմեամբք շութափէին, եւ ահեղ որոտումն եւ ահեղ թնդիւնք եւ բախմունք խուռն յարձակելոյ իբրեւ յամպոյ ճայթիւնք կարկտաբերք հրձգութեանց կերպաձգէին:
| 16:7 But while he feigned illness on his couch, the champions surged around. There was a fearsome thunder and frightful echoings and repercussions from the crush of the assault, like the crashing of hail and lightning from clouds:

16:8 Եւ ուժեղացեալ ղաշիկն քաղաքային ի վերայ Մուսէի զօրուն, մինչ ածին արկին զբուն բանակաւն ուր եւ Աշոտն մեր թուէր գոլ խօթացեալ. մտեալ Վահան աղերսէր համոզէր՝ մի կալ մնալ, մինչ զքաջանունութիւնն ընդ վատասրտութիւն կարծել յոմանց խառնել, թէպէտ եւ անկարծ վարկանէր զկեղակարծն:
| 16:8 The army of the citizens [of Qazvin] had the upper hand over Musē, pushing him back around his own camp where our Ashot seemed to be ill. Vahan entered [his tent], begging and urging him not to linger until his repute for valour was thought by some to be tainted with cowardice, though he thought such suspicion unfounded:

16:9 Նոյնժամայն աճապարեալ աշտանակեալ ի նիւս նժոյգ երիվարին, զէն զանձամբ արկեալ, նիզակ ի ձեռն առեալ, խրախոյս ի ձայն բարձր բարձեալ առ իւր ազատագունդ վաշտն՝ ասէ. «հա՜պա, քաջք Հայոց, եւ յայսմ ծանիցեն զմեզ եւ զարիանալն մեր:
| 16:9 Immediately his groom made haste to mount him on his horse. Putting on his armour, taking his lance in his hand, and shouting encouragement to his band of noble warriors, he cried: “ On, valiant Armenians; let them now recognise us and our prowess:

16:10 Եւ յանդուգն դիմեցուածովն ի վեր քան զզարմանս՝ այն ինչ ի քթթել ական դարձուցին զխրոսակսն, եւ զռազմն ղաշիկ քակեցին եւ զյառաջագահ ախոյեանսն փայլակնահար արարեալ դիթաւալ կացուցին եւ իբրեւ հողմ հոսեալ զփոշի ամարայնոյ՝ այնպէս արագապէս զպատերազմին գլխաւորեցին նահատակութիւն:
| 16:10 With an impetuous attack surpassing all admiration, in the twinkling of an eye they routed the [enemy] cavalry, broke the ranks of their army, and struck down as corpses the champions in the front ranks as if they had been hit by lightning. As the wind blows the summer dust, that rapidly did they bring the battle to an end:

16:11 Եւ ամենայն խորհուրդք Մուսէի առին զկատարումն ի վերայ թշնամեացն:
| 16:11 All Musē' s plans against the enemy were accomplished:

16:12 Բայց Մուսէ ոչ հաստատնագոյնս վասն Աշոտի զխոստմանն բերելով յանձնառութիւն, արձակել զնա յիւր իշխանութիւնն, զայս խորհելով թէ զայսպիսի քաջ այր եւ պատերազմող ոչ պատշաճ վարկանելի է ի հեռաբնակ վայրս ի դրանէ արքունի կացուցանել:
| 16:12 Yet Musē did not carry through without fail his promise concerning Ashot— that he would restore him to his principality. He reckoned it inappropriate to establish such an intrepid warrior in a place far from the royal court:

16:13 Բայց Աշոտ վերջոտնեալ հանդերձ Վահանաւ՝ եկն եհաս խաղաղութեամբ եւ բերկրեալ սրտիւ բազմադէմ յերկիր իւր:
| 16:13 However, Ashot escaped and with Vahan openly returned in peace to his own land, his heart full of joy:

16:14 Եւ յաճախեցին բազմապատիկս վասն նորա գոհութիւնս Աստուծոյ:
| 16:14 On his account they multiplied their thanks to God:
