23:0 Վասն զօրաժողովն լինելոյ Սմբատայ թագաւորին հայոց ի վերայ Ահմատայ Ամդացւոյն, Վրաց եւ Աղուանից եւ բոլոր հայոց իշխանօքն, եւ պարտութիւն Սմբատայ յԱհմատայ ի սահմանս Աղձեաց ի վերայ գետոյն Թուխ կոչեցեալ, որ իջանէ ի ծովն Բզնունեաց:
| 23:0 Concerning the campaign of Smbat, king of Armenia, with the princes of Gēorgia, Albania, and all Armenia, against Ahmat’ of Amida; the defeat of Smbat by Ahmat’ in the district of Ałdznik’ on the river T’ukh, which flows into the lake of Bznunik’:

23:1 Որպէս վերագոյնն յիշեցաք սակաւուք վասն Ահմատայ՝ յինքն գրաւել զաշխարհն Տարունոյ, հանեալ ի Հայոց պետութենէ:
| 23:1 As we briefly mentioned above concerning Ahmat’, he had seized the land of Tarōn for himself and withdrawn it from Armenian control:

23:2 Գրէ բազում անգամ Սմբատ առ Ահմատ՝ թողուլ անդրէն զաշխարհն, տալ ի ձեռս Աշոտի որդւոյ իշխանին Դաւթայ. եւ խոստանայր նմա զհազարապետութիւնն Հայոց յարքունուստ հրամանէ հնազանդութեամբ Հայոց:
| 23:2 Smbat frequently wrote to Ahmat’ [asking him] to abandon that land and give it to over to Ashot, son of prince David, promising him the position of governor of Armenia by royal decree with the homage of the Armenians:

23:3 Բայց Ահմատ ոչ խոնարհեալ ունկն դնել ասացելոցն, արհամարհեալ զառաքեցելովքն:
| 23:3 But Ahmat’ did not deign to heed his messages and scorned the proposals:

23:4 Յայնժամ թագաւորն դեսպանս արարեալ յամենայն սահմանս տէրութեանն Հայոց, Վրաց եւ Աղուանից, եւ առ քաղաքացիսն եւ հազարապետս եւ գաւառակալս, եւ որք սիրողաբար առ նա զհնազանդութեանն հարկ հարկանէին:
| 23:4 Then the king sent messengers to all regions of his Armenian kingdom, to the Gēorgians and Albanians, to the citizens, governors and prefects, and those who in friendly submission paid him tribute:

23:5 Եւ եկին հասին առ նա Ատրներսէհ իշխանն Վրաց: Եւ որպէս ասեն՝ եղեւ թիւ զօրուն գումարելոյ իբրեւ [ՃՌ–աց]. եւ գնացեալ ընդ եզր ծովուն Բզնունեաց, ընդ կողմն Ապահունեաց՝ եւ բանակեցաւ յափն գետոյն, որ իջանէ յԱղձնեաց խոխոմացն:
| 23:5 Atrnerseh, prince of Gēorgia, came to him. And they say that the number of his forces was about [120,000]. He marched along the edge of the lake of Bznunik’ through the area of Apahunik’, and camped on the bank of the river that descends from the ravines of Ałdznik’:

23:6 Զորոյ իրազեկ եղեալ գալուստ նորա առ Ահմատ, եւ նորա գումարեալ առ ինքն զզօրս իւրոյ նահանգին եւ Միջագետաց եւ զԳեթացիսն՝ եւ եկն եհաս յանդիման նմա:
| 23:6 When news of his arrival reached Ahmat’, he too assembled the forces of his province and those of Mesopotamia and the Get’ats’ik’, and came out to meet him:

23:7 Եւ իսկոյն անյապաղ յական քթթել սպառազինեալ այրուձի պնդակազմ պատրաստութեամբ, ռազմ բոլորեալ ղաշիկ դիմացուածով զմարտն գրգռեալ, ախոյանայարձակ լինելով քաջացն Վասպուրականի, զորոց անուանքն վերագոյն անդ յիշեցաք, եւ փակեցին զբանակն եւ դարձուցին զզօրագլուխսն, եւ իբրեւ հողմ զպրակս եղեգան տատանեալ՝ սասանեալ խռովեցուցին զբազմութիւն զօրացն:
| 23:7 Straightway, in the twinkling of an eye, the thickly massed cavalry, armed and prepared, formed ranks in martial opposition and incited a clash. The valiant warriors of Vaspurakan, whose names we recorded above, attacked like heroes. They surrounded the camp, turned back the commanders, and as the wind shakes thickets of reeds, so did they mow down the host of the [enemy] army:

23:8 Իսկ թագաւորն իբրեւ գիտաց զընդխառնել ընդ միմեանս զօրացն, կամեցաւ մի՛թէ արդեօք կարասցէ դադարեցուցանել զմաքառումն. ի սաստ մատուցեալ գնդին իւրոյ պատերազմողացն՝ եւ ոչ կարաց զբորբոքեալ հնոց դէզադէզ կոխակացն սրախողխող սատակմանն ցածուցանել:
| 23:8 When the king learned that the armies had joined combat, he hoped still to be able to bring the battle to an end. But threatened by his corps of warriors, he was unable to calm the raging fury and surging carnage:

23:9 Նոյնժամայն դարձուցեալ զերասանակ երիվարին ի պատերազմ յառաջանալ, եւ անդ բազում արութիւն նահատակութեան ցուցեալ, սակայն ոչինչ օգուտ բերեալ:
| 23:9 So he immediately turned his horse’s bridle to advance to the fray. He demonstrated there many brave acts of heroism, but they were of no avail:

23:10 Այլ ելեալ արտաքս ի ռազմէն՝ դարձաւ փախստեայ ընդ ճանապարհն Հողցայ. եւ Ահմատայ ընդ մէջ փակեալ զղաշիկն՝ յանխնայ հարուածովք հարին, մանաւանդ զհետեւակազօր գրոխսն եւ զգռեահսն որք ընդ նոսա. եւ որպէս ասեն՝ աւելի քան [ԵՌ] լեալ թիւ սպանելոցն. եւ զտարի մի կացեալ մարմինք սպանելոցն անյօշելիք ի գազանաց եւ ի թռչնոց:
| 23:10 Abandoning the battle, he turned in flight by way of Hołts’. Ahmat’ surrounded the [Armenian] army and inflicted merciless losses, especially on the rabble of foot soldiers with them. They say that the number of killed was more than [5,000], and for one year the bodies of the dead were left intact by beasts and birds:

23:11 Անկեալ էր յայնժամ ի պատերազմին Աշոտ Հայկազնեայ Գեղարքունեաց իշխան, որ Սուփանայ որդին ճանաչէր. եւ տիկինն սպարապետական ի Տարունոյ եկեալ եւ նշանացի զդի նորա գտեալ՝ տարաւ ի Պորպ յիւր աւան եւ եդ ի գերեզմանի:
| 23:11 In that battle fell Ashot Haykazn, prince of Gełark’unik’, called the son of Sup’an. The wife of the sparapet came from Tarōn, and finding his body by its insignia, took it to her town of Porp and buried it:
