2:1 Բայց զկնի մահուան երջանիկ իշխանին հաստատի յաթոռ հօր իւրոյ անդրանիկն Աշոտ որդի ամաց իբրեւ [ԺԲ-ից]: Եւ մեծանուն տիկինն Սոփի, հայելով ի մանկանցն բարենշան յառաջադիմութիւնն, մանաւանդ ի մանկանն Գագկայ, զի անդստին ի տղայական հասակէն հրաշազարդ փառօք փայլէր ի մէջ եղբարց իւրոց. առ որ նայեցեալ տիկինն՝ յուսացեալ արձանացուցանէ զսիրտ իւր, եւ առնաբար ունի զիշխանութիւն, օգնականութեամբ հօր իւրոյ Աշոտոյ թագաւորին Հայոց:
| 2:1 After the death of the blessed prince, his eldest son Ashot was confirmed on his father’s throne at the age of about twelve years. The renowned lady Sop’i oversaw the remarkable progress of her children, especially that of the young Gagik; for even from that young age he shone out with wonderful eclat among his brothers. On seeing this, the princess took hope and steadied her heart; and he ruled his principality like a man with the help of her father Ashot, king of Armenia:

2:2 Եւ քանզի որդի քեռ էր Ապումրուան տիկնոջն Սոփեայ՝ վասն այնորիկ արձակէ զնա ի կապանաց հրամանաւ հօր իւրոյ:
| 2:2 Since Apumruan was the son of Lady Soph’s sister, she therefore released him from imprisonment at the command of her father:

2:3 Եւ ինքն Սոփի անհամեմատն ի կանայս, ըստ նմանութեան ամուսնասէր տատրակի, հրաժարեալ յամենայն վայելչութեանց կենցաղականացս՝ խանդակաթ լինելով, ոչ ժուժեալ սրտին նեղութեան՝ զկնի է ամսոյ փոխի յաշխարհէս խաղաղութեամբ ննջեալ ընդ հարս իւր, թողեալ զմանկունսն տղայս եւ անկատարս հասակաւ:
| 2:3 Now Sop’i herself, incomparable among women like the turtledove devoted to its mate, separated herself from all delights of this earthly existence; being so attached [to her husband], her heart was unable to endure the pain, and after seven months she peacefully departed this world to sleep with her ancestors, leaving her children young and tender in age:

2:4 Աստ բազմաց մրմռեալ ազգականաց սոցա, որք եւ ստանալ ինչ մանկանցն խորհէին, այլ ոչ իշխէին յերկիւղէ մեծին Աշոտոյ թագաւորին Հայոց:
| 2:4 Then several of their relatives murmured, plotting disloyalty to the youths; but they were unable [to do anything] from fear of the great Ashot, king of Armenia:

2:5 Յետ այսորիկ կեցեալ թագաւորն Աշոտ ամ մի եւ կէս՝ փոխի յաշխարհէս, փառօք ի փառս յուղարկեալ:
| 2:5 Following this, King Ashot lived for a year and a half before leaving the world, gloriously buried for [eternal] glory:

2:6 Աստ ապա ի պատեհս գտեալ հարազատաց սոցա՝ սկսան յափշտակել զտեղիս տեղիս ի ձեռաց մանկանցն:
| 2:6 Their relatives found this a suitable occasion to begin seizing various places from the control of the young princes:

2:7 Յայնժամ Ապումրուան յառաջ մատուցեալ, խորհուրդ ի մէջ առեալ, կամեցաւ տիրել իշխանութեանն Վասպուրականի, յինքն գրաւէ զմիտս տերանց եւ ազատաց աշխարհին, ասելով օրինակ զայս. եթէ ի դէմս Աշոտոյ առնեմ տեղապահութիւն աշխարհիս, եւ համոզեալ հաւանեցուցանէ զբնակիչս աշխարհին:
| 2:7 Then Apumruan came forward with a plan, for he wished to rule over the principality of Vaspurakan. He won over to himself the minds of the lords and nobles of the country by the following argument: “ I shall rule the country as a substitute in the name of Ashot, and he will persuade the inhabitants of the land to acquiesce:

2:8 Եւ յարբունս հասեալ Աշոտ՝ կայր ըստ սովորութեանն ահիւ ընդ ձեռամբ Ապումրուանայ, զի եւ փեսայացեալ իսկ էր նմա:
| 2:8 When Ashot reached his majority he remained according to his custom respectfully submissive to Apumruan, for he had become his son- in- law:

2:9 Եւ ապա իբրեւ աւուրք ինչ լինէին պարապոյ՝ կոչէ զԱշոտ եղբարքն հանդերձ ի բերդն Կոտորոց, պատուասիրութեան ինչ աղագաւ:
| 2:9 Then, when there were a few days of leisure, he [Apumruan] summoned Ashot with his brothers to the castle of Kotor on pretext of congratulations:

2:10 Եւ անդէն ի միում գիշերի կալեալ կապէ զնոսա, եւ յղէ զԱշոտ եւ զԳուրգէն ի բերդն Նկան կոչեցեալ, եւ տուեալ ի բանտ՝ պահէ մեծաւ զգուշութեամբ:
| 2:10 There one night he seized and bound them. He sent Ashot and Gurgēn to the castle called Nkan, and had them imprisoned and guarded with great circumspection:

2:11 Իսկ զԳագիկ խաղացուցանէ ի Ճուաշ գաւառ, յամրոցն Շամիրամ. քանզի իբրեւ զմանուկ տղայ խաբեալ էր զԱշոտ, տալով նմա զբերդն Ագարակայ հանդերձ Ճախուկն կոչեցեալ գաւառաւ, փոխանակ իւր առնլով զբերդն Նկան եւ զԹոռնաւան եւ Ճուաշ գաւառք, ուր եւ շինեալ զՇամիրամն պարսպէ յիւր անուն:
| 2:11 But Gagik he marched off to the province of Chuash, to the castle of Shamiram. For he had tricked Ashot like a young child by giving him the castle of Agarak with the province called Chakhuk, in return for taking for himself the castle of Nkan and the provinces of T’oṙnavan and Chuash, where he fortified for his own account the [castle] of Shamiram:

2:12 Դարձեալ եւ այլ իմն օրինակ խաբէութեան համբաւէ ի մարդիկ, ասելով այսպէս. «ես այր մի անժառանգ եմ, բայց միայն ի դստերէն զոր առեալ էր Աշոտ իւր կնութեան. երկնչիմ գուցէ հպարտասցի ի վերայ իմ Աշոտ:
| 2:12 Furthermore he put abroad among the people another type of fraud by saying: “ I am a man without heirs, save only for my daughter whom Ashot has married. I am afraid that perchance Ashot may become puffed up against me:

2:13 Եւ այսուիկ համոզեալ հաւանեցուցանէ զլսօղսն. եւ ինքն ի կասկածի լինելով, տարակուսելի ըմբռնեալ խորհրդովք՝ երբեմն հանէ զԳուրգէն կրտսերն, եւ ածեալ ընդ ինքեան շրջեցուցանէ, եւ դարձեալ տայ ի բանտ կրկին անգամ. եւ ապա հանէ զԳագիկ. եւ ածեալ զմտաւ վասն նորա՝ ոչ գիտէր զինչ առնիցէ. զի բեկեալ էր սիրտ նորա առ ուշի մանկանն, եւ սպասէր գաղտ կորուսանել զնա:
| 2:13 By this he persuaded and convinced his audience. But being himself suspicious and overcome by irresolution, now he would release the younger Gurgēn and take him around with him, then again he would have him imprisoned once more. So he released Gurgēn, but was perplexed with regard to him, not knowing what to do. For his heart was torn for thinking about the youth, and he was waiting [for an occasion] to kill him secretly:

2:14 Այլ Աստուած ոչ ետ թոյլ ձեռին նորա մխել յարիւն արդարոյն:
| 2:14 But God did not permit him to dip his hand in innocent blood:
