8:0 Յաղագս շինութեան Աղթամարայ, եւ թէ ո՞յք ոմանք յառաջ քան զձեռնարկելն արքայի սուղ եւ ոչ արժանի ինչ յիշատակի ի նմա գործս գործեսցին:
| 8:0 Concerning the building of Ałt’amar; and those who constructed there a few buildings unworthy of mention before the undertaking of the king:

8:1 Եւ արդ մեր բաղձալի սիրով բուռն հարեալ զգեղեցիկ պատմութեանց՝ զբազմօք զանց արարաք զրուցատրութեամբք, մանաւանդ որ անհուն շատաբանութեամբք իցեն լի, անօգուտ մեզ առ ի պատմել, եւ անշահ լսողաց առ ի լսել:
| 8:1 Now although we have happily undertaken ( these) pleasing histories, we passed over many stories, especially those that would be full of interminable prolixity— profitless for us to relate and useless for the audience to hear:

8:2 ուստի եւ յայսցանէ ի բաց որոշելով զմեր միտս՝ յօգտակարն մեր փութասցուք պատմութեանցն հանդէս. եւ անվրէպ յայտարարութեամբք որ ինչ ի սկզբանց անտի շինութեան աշխարհիս Հայոց ի Հայկայ աղեղնաւորէ եւ ի նորուն զարմից եւ ցկաթոտ եւ վավաշոտ Շամիրամն տիկին Ասորեստանեայց եւ ի նմանէ յայլս եւ յայլոց եւս յաւէտ ձեռակերտք եւ շինուածք յիւրաքանչիւրոցն յերկրիս մերում եղեն՝ մեր առ ամենայնն անձամբ հասեալ եւ աչօք տեսեալ, ձկտեալ եւ ի հեռաւոր աշխարհս, մինչեւ ցԿղարջս եւ Շուշեթացիս եւ առ լերամբն Կաւկոսա եւ յԱհիզ, մինչեւ ի մուտսն Գաղայ, եւ ընդ Տայաստան եւ ընդ ամենայն հիւսիսականս եւ ընդ արեւելս ի հետիոտս գնալով՝ տեսաք զգործ քաջաց եւ նախնեաց. միայն զմերս գրաւեաց զմիտս եւ զտեսութիւն հրաշակերտն եւ քան զբազումս նորանշանն եւ զարմանալին Աղթամար:
| 8:2 So setting these outside our plans, we shall proceed to review the profitable stories. From the beginning of the settlement of Armenia many buildings and constructions were raised in our land by Hayk the Archer and his descendants, and by the amorous and lascivious Semiramis, queen of Assyria, [which have been described] by others with unerring indications. These we have visited in person and seen with our own eyes, travelling to distant parts: as far as Kłarjk’ and the Shushetats’ik’ and the foot of the Caucasus mountain, and to Ahiz as far as the entrance to Gał, across Tayastan and all the northern regions and the East. Travelling on foot, we have seen the works of valiant men and [our] ancestors. But our mind and sight were struck most of all by the splendid, marvellous, and wonderful Ałt’amar:

8:3 որ թէպէտ եւ յառաջ քան զայսոսիկ ի Դաւթայ Սախռունոյ եւ յՌաշամայ Ռշտունւոյ եւ ի Բազափրանայ ասի առեալ շինութիւն, որ զՊաղեստինացւոց աշխարհն հանդերձ Հիւրկանեաւ քահանայիւ գերեալ ած բնակեցոյց յերկրիս մերում՝ սակայն ամենեքեան սոքա իբրեւ ի տաղաւարի, եւ կամ որպէս ի հուղս մրգապահաց բնակեցան յերեւելի յայնմիկ կղզւոջ կոչեցեալն Աղթամար, մինչեւ յաւուրս մեծի արքային Հայոց Գագկայ, որ քաջակորով գիտութեամբ նայեցեալ ի տեղւոյն զբօսանս եւ ծանուցեալ զնա ապաստան լինել աշխարհի ի հինից թշնամեաց՝ ձեռնարկէ հիմն արկանել զնա ահեղ իմն եւ զարմանալի հիացմամբ:
| 8:3 Before this Ałt’amar is said to have been built up by Dawit’ Sakhṙuni and Ṙasham Ṙshtuni and Bazap’ran. This last led into captivity the land of Palestine with the high priest Hyrcanus, and settled them in our land. But all these lived as in tents or fruiterers’ huts on that famous island Ałt’amar up to the time of Gagik, the great king of Armenia. In his excellent wisdom, seeing the pleasantness of the spot and recognising that it was a refuge from enemy raids, he undertook to build on it in a fearsome and amazing fashion:

8:4 հրաման տուեալ բազում արուեստաւորաց եւ անթիւ մարդկան զհատեալ վէմս ծանունս եւ դժուարակիրս հոսել ընկենուլ յատակս ծովուն անհնարին խորութեանն. եւ ժամանակաւ ինչ. այսպէս ջան յանձին կալեալ մեծի արքային՝ եւ յանկարծակի եկն եկաց կանգնեցաւ քարայատակն ամբարտակ կանգունս հինգ ի վերայ բարձրացեալ մկանաց ծովուն, որ մտացն աչօք իբրեւ ի ցամաքի շարայարեալ տողադրէ զհաստակառոյցն վիմաց կարգս. յորոյ վերայ լար եդեալ ձգէ զպարիսպն շուրջանակի իբր ձիարշաւանօք հինգ:
| 8:4 He commanded many artisans and innumerable men to cast heavy, massive hewn rocks into the depths of the terribly deep lake. After continuing his effort in this way for a time, the great king astonishingly succeeded in forming a stone embankment raised five cubits above the surface of the lake; to the mind’s eye this row of solid rocks extended as if on dry land. On top of this he drew a line and raised a fortified wall around [the island], as it were five stadia:

8:5 եւ պարիսպն է հրաշակերտ, ահեղակերպ, բարձրաբերձ լայնանիստ բրգամբք եւ բարձրացեալ աշտարակօք զարդարեալ, անկիւնաւոր խօրանանման տախտակաձեւ յինքեան ունելով գահոյք զբօսանաց, յորում հանդերձ որդւովք եւ ազատակոյտ զօրօք միշտ ուրախանայր արքայ։ Իսկ եւ զգլուխս պարսպին ածեալ ի կիրճս դժուարամածս քարանձաւին՝ ի համբոյրս միմեանց մերձեցուցանէ:
| 8:5 The wall was amazingly constructed, fearsome and adorned with very high and broad- based towers and raised bastions, which had in them deep niches with pleasure seats, where the king often took his ease with his sons and noble courtiers. The end of the wall he led into a narrow cavern difficult of access, and brought the sides close together:

8:6 ի շրթունս խորայատակ հիմանց ծովուն դնէ դրունս ահաւորատեսս, հաստահեղոյսս, բեւեռապինդս. որով եւ զմասն ինչ ծովուն ի կղզին կոյս հատանելով՝ հրաշալիս իմն ներգործեաց, բազում նաւաց յօրինեալ խաղաղ եւ անքոյթ նաւահանգիստ, բարձրագոյն հրաշակերտեաց քան զԱղէքսանդրին ի Մակեդովն քաղաքի, եւ որպէս ինձ թուի՝ զանցոյց զարմանալեօք զՇամիրամեան փորուածոյ սենեկօքն եւ զամբարտակաւ գետոյն որ առ ստորոտով լերինն Վարագայ. զի նորայն գոնեա ի վերայ ցամաքի, իսկ սա ի մեծ խորոց ծովուս արուեստակեալ՝ հարստահարէ զամենայն միտս եւ զգործս իմաստնոցն առ ի քան զինքն եղելոց:
| 8:6 At the junction of the deep constructions in the sea he set gates, fearful to behold, solidly fixed, and strengthened with nails. In this way he cut off part of the sea on the island side, making a wonderfully calm and secure harbour for many ships— a construction superior to the city of Alexander of Macedon. And in my opinion it surpassed in wonder the excavated chambers of Semiramis [in the rock of Van] and the aqueduct at the foot of Mount Varag. For the latter at least is on dry land, whereas this, built in the depths of the lake, transcends all the concepts and accomplishments of wise men previously achieved:

8:7 Եւ այնուհետեւ ժողովեալ ի դուռն արքայի իշխանաց եւ տերանց, ազատաց եւ ռամկաց, եպիսկոպոսաց եւ կրօնաւորաց, զի ամենեքեան օն անդր փութապէս շինուածս եւ ձեռակերտս հաստատեսցեն, հրաման տայցէ, զի լինիցի տեղի ապաստանի ամենայն հինից ի թշնամեաց եկելոց. եւ թագաւորն գթացեալ ոչ արգելու զխնդրեալ պարգեւսն. եւ զկնի հնգից ամաց յորմէ հետէ սկսան շինել՝ պայծառացեալ բարձրացաւ շինութիւն քաղաքին առաւել քան զառաւել:
| 8:7 Then there gathered at the king’s court the princes and lords, nobles and common people, bishops and monks, so that they might all straightway confirm [plans for] the buildings and constructions, and that he might order that the place should become a refuge from all the raids of the enemy. The king in his mercy did not refuse these requests. And five years after they had begun to build, the constructions of the city had been raised in unprecedented magnificence:

8:8 Յայնժամ եւ իւր իսկ արքայի ամենիմաստ հասողութեամբն հանդերձ բազում արուեստաւորօք զլար ճարտարութեան ի ձեռն առեալ գծել, միանգամայն եւ գծագրել նշանակել առ ստորոտով լերինն, որ է գագաթն կղզոյն, զտեղիս զբօսացուցանողս վայելչաւորս, ըստ արժանի կայենից արքայական իւրոցն հանգստեան ձգելով պարսպունս, յարդարելով զփողոցս եւ դարս դարս դարաստանաց եւ գահս ըստ գահից տէրութեանց եւ բուրաստանս եւ պարտէզս, բուրաստանաց եւ ծաղկոցաց որոշեալ հովիտս. զորս վաղվաղակի ածեալ ի կատարումն հասուցանէ զամենայնն:
| 8:8 Then the king in his wise understanding, with many artisans took up the architect’s line to measure and sketch and indicate at the foot of the mountain— which is the highest point of the island— splendid places for enjoyment that were sites worthy of the king’s recreation. He extended walls, laid out streets and terraced gardens and residences for the princes, according to their rank, and gardens and parks, distinguishing the areas for parks and flower gardens. All this he quickly brought to completion:

8:9 եւս եւ ծառատունկ բազում, զոր ոռոգեալ արբուցանեն ի բարեհամ եւ անսպառ աղբերէն, որ ակնարկելովն խնամողին Աստուծոյ կայ ի մէջ քաղաքին:
| 8:9 And he planted many trees, which were watered from a sweet and never- failing spring, which by the foresight of provident God flowed in the middle of the city:

8:10 Եւ քանզի էին ի դրան արքունի գումարեալք արուեստաւորք բազումք, արք պատուաւորք ժողովեալք յամենայն ազգաց յերկրէ, որք ոչ վրիպէին առնել զոր խորհէր արքայ, այլ ըստ հրամանին վաղվաղակի եւ գործն առնոյր զկատարումն՝ ումեմն ի նոցանէ ճարտարապետի առն իմաստնոյ եւ հանճարեղի հրամայէ թագաւորն շինել տաճար մի քառանկիւն, [Խ] կանգնաւ ունելով զչափ լայնութեան եւ երկայնութեան, նմանապէս եւ ի բարձրութիւնն:
| 8:10 There were many artisans assembled at the royal court, honourable men gathered from all nations of the earth who could unerringly carry out the king’s plans. So according to his orders the work was quickly completed. Then the king ordered one of these men, a wise and skillful architect, to construct a square palace, forty cubits wide and deep and equally high:

8:11 որոյ որմոյն լայնութիւնն երիւք մեծաքայլութեամբ չափով ունի զպարզուածսն, գունդ անապակ կրոց եւ քարի, իբրեւ զհալուածս կապարի եւ պղնձոյ ընդ միմեանս խառնեալ. եւ շինուած տաճարին ի հիմանց անտի մինչեւ ցգլուխ նորին ի թռիչս կազմեալ՝ առանց սեան ունի զհաստատութիւն. եւ է որ արդարեւ արժանի զարմանալոյ ի վեր քան զմիտս:
| 8:11 The thickness of the wall was three large strides deep, a mass of pure mortar and stone, as it were a fusion of lead and bronze mixed together. The construction of the palace, from its foundations to its summit, took the form of a bird in flight, without the support of any pillar. It was truly worthy of admiration surpassing understanding:

8:12 Ունի եւ խորանս կամարակիցս եւ անկիւնս եւ շրջապատս գեղապաճոյճս, անթիւ մտաց եւ անզննելի աչաց. ունի եւ գումբէթս երկնահարթս ոսկեզարդս եւ լուսաճաճանչս, յոր թէ նայել ոք կամիցի՝ իբր թագաւորի իմն պատիւ առնելով՝ նախ ի բաց առցէ զխոյր գլխոյն, եւ ապա տանջեալ զպարանոցն հազիւ թէ նշմարել կարիցէ զզանազան դեղոցն կերպագրութիւնս:
| 8:12 It had vaulted domes and niches and beautifully decorated surroundings, innumerable and incomprehensible to the mind and eye. It also had domes like heaven, ornamented with gold and shining with light. If anyone wished to look at them, as if honouring a king first he must remove his head covering, and then twisting his neck he will scarcely be able to distinguish the various beautiful representations:

8:13 Եւ է կարգ շինուածոյ տաճարին ահեղ իմն եւ զարմանալի, եւ այնքան բարձրագոյն եւ անհաս է մտաց՝ զոր օրինակ թէ իմաստուն ոք այր ընդ մի կարգ խորանի միոջ զբազում ժամս նայեսցի, արտաքս ելեալ ոչինչ յորոց նայեցաւն պատմել ումեք կարասցէ:
| 8:13 The structure of the palace is extraordinary and astonishing, and so surpassing and incomprehensible to the imagination that if an intelligent man were to examine only one section of one dome for many hours, on coming out he would be unable to tell anyone anything of what he had seen:

8:14 Վասն զի են ի նմա ոսկեզարդ գահոյք, յորս բազմեալ երեւի արքայ նազելի ճոխութեամբ, շուրջ զիւրեաւ ունելով պատանեակս լուսատեսակս, սպասաւորս ուրախութեան, ընդ նմին եւ դասս գուսանաց եւ խաղս աղճկանց զարմանալոյ արժանիս. անդէն եւ սուսերամերկաց հոյլք եւ ըմբշամարտաց պատերազմունք. անդ եւ դասք առիւծուց եւ այլոց գազանաց. եւ անդ երամք հաւուց զարդարեալք ի պէսպէս պաճուճանս. զոր եթէ զամենայնն որ ի նմա գործք ի թիւ ոք կամիցի արկանել՝ բազում աշխատութեան պէտք են անձինն եւ լսողաց:
| 8:14 For [the pictures] include gilt thrones, seated on which appears the king in splendid majesty surrounded by shining young men, the servants of his festivities, and also lines of minstrels and girls dancing in an admirable manner. There are bands of men with drawn swords and wrestling matches. There are also troops of lions and other wild beasts, and flocks of birds adorned with various plumage. If anyone wished to enumerate all the works wild beasts, and flocks of birds adorned with various plumage. If anyone wished to enumerate all the works of art in the palace, it would be a great labour for himself and his audience:

8:15 Եւ է փառք տաճարին ահեղ իմն եւ զարմանալի. եդեալ են ի նմա դրունք հատուածոյք մանր յօրինուածով եւ հրաշալի գեղգեղմամբ, ի բանալն իւրեանց երկբացիկք են, օդաբերք զովացուցիչք. իսկ հուպ առ միմեանս գոլով՝ երեւին իբրեւ զմի պատկեր:
| 8:15 The splendour of the palace is extraordinary and wonderful. Doors have been fitted that are inlaid with detailed ornament and amazing decoration. They have two leaves, which on opening admit refreshing breezes. But when they are closed, they appear as a single piece:

8:16 Պատմեաց մեզ եւ հաւատարիմ ոստիկան մի ի գործավարաց քաղաքին, եթէ եմուտ ի շինուած տաճարին երկաթ լտերս իբրեւ [ՄՌ]. եւ հաւաստապէս ճշմարտութեամբ նուազեաց զասելն, քան թէ առատութեամբն յաւելեաց ի բազումս. իսկ եւ նիստ փառաց տաճարին յամենայն կողմանց գաւառին ի մէջ քաղաքին երեւի իբրեւ զմեծ մի բլուր. ոչինչ նուազեալ բարձրութեամբ քան զքարանձաւ ծայր կղզոյն:
| 8:16 A trustworthy official, one of the superintendents of the city, told us that two hundred thousand litra of iron went into the construction of the palace. And he has certainly modified his account rather than exaggerating it. Indeed, the glorious site of the palace appeared from all sides of the province as a great hill in the middle of the city, no less high than the rocky summit of the island:

8:17 Պարսպէ անմերձենալի ամրութեամբ եւ զծայրս ամրոցին, եւ շինեալ ի նմա շտեմարանս մեծամեծս եւ համբարանոցս, միանգամայն եւ տունս գանձուց եւ զինուց եւ ասպազինաց անհուն բազմութեանց:
| 8:17 He [Gagik] also walled with unassailable strength the summit of the castle, and constructed there enormous storehouses and magazines, and also depositories for treasures and measureless numbers of arms and armour:

8:18 Այլ եթէ զամենայն զզարդ շինուածոյն, զոսկեզարդ փողոցսն եւ զգումբէթակապ խորանայարկսն եւ զզանազան տեղիս գահոյիցն, որք առաւել այլակերպութեամբ մի քան զմի գերահրաշապէս փայլեն՝ եւ ըստ արժանեացն մանրամասնաբար գովասանել ոք կամիցի՝ կարծեմ թէ յանհասութիւն ձկտեալ տատանի, որ եւ հասանելոյ չէ կարողութիւն:
| 8:18 But if anyone wished to praise in suitable detail all the ornament of the construction, the golden streets, the domed halls, and various throne rooms which outshine each other in diversity, I think that he would fall into incomprehension and hesitation:

8:19 Բայց մեր զդիպողսն եւ զպատշաճաւորսն որքան է կարողութիւն՝ ի լրումն ընծայեցաք գեղեցիկ քոյոցդ ախորժակաց, ո՜վ քաջազգի եւ տան մեծի արգասաւոր եւ նախնական մեծ:
| 8:19 But we have offered this suitable and convenient account, so far as we could, in order to fulfil your noble interests, Oh great benefactor and ancestor of a heroic and distinguished house:
