20:0 Յաղագս թէ զիա՛րդ պատերազմ սաստկացեալ էր ի մէջ Յունացն եւ Պարսից, եւ թէ զիա՛րդ Արշակ արքայ Հայոց զօրավիգն լինէր թագաւորին Պարսից, եւ հանէր ընդ սուր զզօրսն Յունաց. կամ զիա՛րդ դաւաճանութեամբ սիւնւոյն Անդուկայ փախստական լինէր արքայն Հայոց:
| 20:0 How the war between Byzantium and Iran intensified; how the king of Armenia, Arshak, allied with the king of Iran and put the Byzantines to the sword; and how, through the treachery of Andovk Siwni, Arshak fled to Shapuh, king of Iran:

20:1 Այլ զառաջինն իբրեւ փախեաւ թագաւորն Արշակ յարքայէն Շապհոյ, եւ անարգեաց զնա յերդմանցն իւրոց, զառաջինն Շապուհ արքայն Պարսից ոչ ինչ խստութեամբ ջանացաւ ընդ նմա. վասն զի մարտ դեռ բազում սաստկացեալ էր ի մէջ իւր եւ ի մէջ թագաւորին Յունաց:
| 20:1 Previously when king Arshak had fled from king Shapuh and dishonored him through his vow, Shapuh, the king of Iran, tried no severity in dealing with him, for there was still intense warfare between himself and the emperor of Byzantium:

20:2 Եւ իբրեւ հաղ քան զհաղ յաւել լինել պատերազմ, իսկ թագաւորն Հայոց Արշակ զառաջինն ընդ միտս իւր մեծամտեալ էր, եւ նայէր տեսանել` թէ ո՛վ ի նոցանէն կոչեսցէ զնա ի թիկունս օգնականութեան յաղագս գործոյ պատերազմին:
| 20:2 As the war dragged on, king Arshak of Armenia conceitedly waited to see which of them would call him to aid them in fighting:
|
20:3 Ակն ունէր, երթեալ կամելով յօժարութեամբ ի թիկունս կայսերն Յունաց. իսկ նոքա ոչ կոչեցին զնա, եւ ոչ շուք ինչ եդին նմա եւ ոչ մեծարանս:
| 20:3 He enthusiastically wanted to go to the aid of the emperor of Byzantium, but the Byzantines did not call on, magnify or exalt him:

20:4 Իսկ թագաւորն Պարսից Շապուհ յղէր առ նա հրեշտակս խաղաղութեան. յուշ առնէր նմա զառաջին երդումն, ասելով` եթէ կամ լիցի եղբօրդ զի եկեսցես օգնեսցես ի գործ պատերազմիս, զի ի թիկունս հասցես քո գնդաւդ:
| 20:4 But the Iranian king Shapuh sent messages of peace to him, reminding him of his previous vow, saying: “ Your brother wants you to come and help him fight with your brigade:
|
20:5 Ասէ. Թէ դու ի մեր կոյս լինիս, գիտեմք զի մեր լինելոց է յաղթութիւնն:
| 20:5 I know that if you are on our side, we shall triumph:
|
20:6 Ապա յորժամ զայս լսէր Արշակ արքայ Հայոց, մեծաւ ուրախութեամբ կամեցաւ երթալ ի թիկունս օգնականութեան, զօրավիգն լինել Շապհոյ թագաւորին Պարսից:
| 20:6 Now when Arshak, the king of Armenia, heard this, with great joy he wanted to go to aid and assist Shapuh, king of Iran:

20:7 Ապա տայր հրաման թագաւորն Արշակ Վասակայ իւրում սպարապետին` գունդ գումարել, զօրս պատրաստել:
| 20:7 So, he ordered his sparapet, Vasak, to assemble a brigade and prepare troops:
|
20:8 Եւ նա վաղվաղակի կատարէր զհրամանս թագաւորին. չորեքհարիւր հազար զօր կուռ վառեալք, որ ընտիրք եւ պատերազմողք էին, լի արութեամբ արուեստաց նահատակութեանն:
| 20:8 Vasak quickly implemented the king’s orders. He assembled [400000] well armed troops of select warriors full of manly heroism:

20:9 Նիզակաւորք, սուսերաւորք, աղեղնաւորք անվրէպք կորովիք, վաղրաւորք, սակրաւորք, որք ոչ գիտէին զերկեւղ զանգիտելոյ յարանց յախոյանց. համակ հեծելազօրք զրահաւոր պատենազէնք, սաղաւարտաւորք, դրօշաւորք, կազմ նշանաւորք բազմաձայն փողարօքն:
| 20:9 spearmen, swordsmen, powerful archers who did not miss their mark, men with sabres and battle- axes who were fearless before champions, the entire cavalry wearing armor, with helmets, banners, with notable multi- sounding trumpets:

20:10 Խաղաց գնաց թագաւորն Արշակ բազմակոյտ նախարարօքն, չուեաց ընդ Աղձնիս ընդ իւր իշխանութիւնն. չոգաւ թափեցաւ յերկիրն արուացաստանի` դէմ յանդիման մըծբնացւոց քաղաքին, որ էրն տեղի ճակատուն պատերազմին:
| 20:10 King Arshak with a multitude of naxarars went through his principality, through Aghjnik, and came out into the Aruatsastan country, opposite the city of Mcbin [Nisibis], which was to be the battle site:

20:11 Ապա երթեալ տեսանէին զժամադիր արարեալ միմեանց վասն իրաց պատերազմին կողմանցն երկոցունց:
| 20:11 Now when the Armenians arrived at the place and time designated for the battle between the two sides:
|
20:12 Իսկ զօրքն Յունաց հասեալք, մածեալք բանակեալք էին իբրեւ զաւազ առ ափն ծովու բազմութեամբք:
| 20:12 they saw that the Byzantine troops had already arrived and encamped in a multitude as dense as the sand on the seashore:
|
20:13 Իսկ զօրքն Պարսից չեւ էին հասեալ ի ժամադիր տեղի պատերազմին:
| 20:13 while the Iranian troops had not yet come:
|
20:14 Իսկ զօրքն արքային Հայոց կանուխ քան զՊարսսն ի տեղի ճակատուն հասանէին, եւ զտեղի առեալ կային:
| 20:14 The troops of the king of Armenia arrived before the Iranians and waited in place:
|
20:15 Ապա տապել սկսան զօրքն Հայոց ընդ իւրեանց նիստ խափանածոյն, եւ ոչ առնուին յանձն մնալ կամ անսալ զօրացն Պարսից, այլ կամեցան յարձակել դիմել հասանել ի վերայ թագաւորին Յունաց ինքեանք` առանց Պարսից զօրացն, անձամբք վճարել զգործ պատերազմին:
| 20:15 Now the Armenian troops grew restless with waiting and did not want to wait for or heed the Iranian troops, but rather wanted to attack the Byzantine king themselves and wage war without the Iranians:

20:16 Եւ այր ամենայն զօրացն Հայոց ինքնակամք իւրաքանչիւր արձակ արձակ խաղային. եւս առաւել զօրավարն նոցին Վասակ քան զամենայն զօրսն ելեւել առնէր, կապակոտոր լինէր, չմնայր հաւանութեան մինչեւ զօրքն Պարսից եկեսցեն, այլ զի միայն ինքեամբք վճարեսցեն զգործ պատերազմին:
| 20:16 Every man of the Armenian troops, self- willed and unbridled, moved forth. This was especially true of their general Vasak, who, more than anyone, was going back and forth unrestrained, unwilling to wait for the Iranians to come. Rather, he wanted them to wage the war themselves:

20:17 Ապա միահամուռ զօրքն Հայոց անկանէին առաջի եւ խնդրէին յիւրեանց թագաւորէն Արշակայ, զի մի՛ պահեսցէ զնոսա մինչեւ եկեսցէ արքայն Պարսից Շապուհ. այլ վասն որոյ իրիք եկեալ իցեն, վաղագոյն նոցա զպատերազմն առ յանդիման արարեալ` համարձակեսցէ յարձակել քան զանսալն յօտար աշխարհին. առաւել մղձկէին, զի լաւ հաշուէին զմեռանելն առաւել քան զյամելն յօտար աշխարհին:
| 20:17 Then all the Armenian troops moved forward and beseeched their king Arshak not to restrain them until the Iranian king Shapuh arrived. Rather, he should let them accomplish that which they had come to do, and let them attack the Byzantines. For they were impatient waiting in a foreign land and considered it better to die than to wait there:

20:18 Ապա թոյլ տայր նոցա թագաւորն Արշակ, եւ յանդիմանէր նոցա զգործ պատերազմին:
| 20:18 So, king Arshak allowed it, and went against the Byzantines in war:
|
20:19 Ապա կարգէր կազմէր պատրաստէր զամենայն զզօրսն Հայոց Վասակ զօրավարն սպարապետն Հայոց մեծաց:
| 20:19 Vasak, the general and sparapet of Greater Armenia, arranged, organized and prepared all the Armenian troops:
|
20:20 Վառէր զինէր ժամակալ լինէր Վասակ. հանդերձ ամենայն պատերազմող զօրօքն այրայրատեան գնդաւն ելանէր անկանէր ի վերայ բանակին:
| 20:20 He armed and at the appointed time went against the army together with all the military forces of the Ayraratean gund:
|
20:21 Առ հասարակ ընդ սուր հանեալ կոտորէին, այնպէս զի ոչ ապրեցուցանէին ի նոցանէ եւ ոչ զմի:
| 20:21 They put all of them to the sword, so much so that not a single Byzantine soldier survived:
|
20:22 Եւ առնուին զկապուտ զաւար յունական զօրուցն, զի ոչ գոյր չափ կամ թիւ որչափ լցան գանձօք, եւ անհամար կարասեաւ մեծաւ աւարացն յղփացան:
| 20:22 then the Armenians took the loot and booty of the Byzantine troops, and there was no estimating how much they loaded up with treasures or countless great articles of loot:

20:23 Եւ յետ այսորիկ զտեղի ունէր արքայն Հայոց հանդերձ իւրովք զօրօքն, մինչեւ գայր հասանէր Շապուհ արքայն Պարսից ամենայն անթիւ եւ անչափ զօրօքն Պարսից:
| 20:23 After this the king of Armenia remained there with his troops until Shapuh, king of Iran, arrived with countless, immeasurable Iranian troops:
|
20:24 Իբրեւ եկն ետես զքաջութիւն գործոյն հայաստան զօրացն, զի զճակատ մղեալ, զպատերազմ յարդարեալ, զյաղթութիւն կազմեալ եւ զգործ վճարեալ, կայր զարմացեալ մեծապէս. եւ պատուէր զԱրշակ արքայ Հայոց մեծապէս, եւ զամենայն մեծամեծս Հայոց. սոյնպէս եւ զսպարապետն Հայոց զՎասակ:
| 20:24 When he observed the bravery of the deed of the Armenian troops, how they fought, won and resolved the battle, he was very surprised. And Shapuh greatly honored king Arshak of Armenia and all the Armenian grandees, as well as Vasak, the sparapet of Armenia:

20:25 Ապա խօսել սկսանէր թագաւորն Պարսից Շապուհ ընդ զօրս իւր` թէ զի՛նչ պարգեւս բարեաց, կամ զի՛նչ հատուցումն կարեմք մեք հատուցանել արքայիս Հայոց Արշակայ, զի զայսպիսի գործ գործեաց, կամ զայսպիսի քաջութիւն արարեալ, կամ զայսպիսի թշնամիս եհար եւ զայսպիսի պատերազմ մղեաց, կամ այսպիսի ճակատու յաղթեաց եւ զայսպիսի անուն ստացաւ մեզ:
| 20:25 King Shapuh of Iran then began asking his troops regarding what good gifts or what reward he could give Arshak, king of Armenia, for having accomplished such a deed, displaying such bravery, attacking such an enemy, waging such a battle and winning it as well as receiving such a good name:

20:26 Զի եթէ մեք լեալ էաք, ամենայն Արեաց զօրք հանդերձ այսպիսի աջողութեամբ գայր ի ձեռն, քաջ թէ զոյգ հասարակ այսպիսի գործ ի միասին կարէաք գործել. արդ Հայոց արքայ իւրով զօրութեամբն ընդ մեր նահատակեալ, զայսչափ քաջութիւնս արար, զոր ոչ ոք կարէ առնել ամենեւին:
| 20:26 For,” he said, “ we, the entire Aryan forces would have been able to do this with their help, but now the king of Armenia instead of us accomplished such bravery that none other could accomplish:
|
20:27 Արդ զորպիսի՞ հատուցումն բարեաց կարասցուք մեք առնել նմա:
| 20:27 Now what fitting reward can we give him:
|
20:28 Եւ այսպիսի անգեալ էր ի խորհուրդս, թէ զի՛նչ այն ինչ իցէ զոր տայցեմ ես նմա:
| 20:28 Thus, he pondered what they should give him:
|
20:29 Ապա տային պատասխանի նախարարքն իւր Շապհոյ արքային Պարսից, եւ ասեն ցնա` թէ զինչ եւ կամիս, իւ կամիս` կարող ես հաճել զնա. ոսկի քո շատ եւ արծաթ, կերպաս եւ մարգարիտ. զինչ եւ միանգամ դու կամիս շնորհել նմա, տուր նմա:
| 20:29 The Iranian king Shapuh’s naxarars told him: “ Give him anything you think will please him, much of your gold, silver, silk, and pearls:
|
20:30 Ապա տայր պատասխանի Շապուհ թագաւորն Պարսից իւրոց իշխանացն, եւ ասէ. Արդ ոչ եթէ սէր ինչ է, զոր դուքդ ասացէք. այլ եկայք, անքակ սէր արասցուք մեք ընդ Արշակայ արքային Հայոց, զի մինչեւ յաւիտեան անբաժին լիցի նա ի մէնջ:
| 20:30 The Iranian king Shapuh replied to his princes: “ What you suggest does not display sufficient affection. Rather, come, let us establish unshakable affection between ourselves and king Arshak of Armenia, such that he will be unseparable from us for eternity:

20:31 Տացեմ զդուստր իմ կնութիւն Արշակայ արքային Հայոց, եւ տաց նմա տուն մեծ. զի յորժամ գնասցէ ի Հայոց գալ առ մեզ, այնպէս տացուք նմա տուն, զի ի Հայոց մինչեւ ի Տիզբոն մինչեւ առ մեզ համակ յիւրում տան ագցի, մինչեւ առ մեզ եկեսցէ:
| 20:31 I will give king Arshak of Armenia my daughter in marriage and a great tun, such a tun so that when he comes to us from Armenia as far as Ctesiphon, he will lodge within his own tun:

20:32 Թագաւորին զայս արասցուք. իսկ զօրավարին Վասակայ կամ այլոց մեծամեծացն եւ զօրավարացն տացուք ոսկի եւ արծաթ, կերպաս եւ մարգարիտ:
| 20:32 Let us give this to the king. As for general Vasak and the other grandees and generals, let us give them the gold, silver, silk, and pearls:
|
20:33 Եւ հաճեցան մեծամեծքն եւ խորհրդակիցք թագաւորին Պարսից ընդ այս խորհուրդ, եւ հաստատէին զասացեալսն` թէ արժան է զայդ առնել:
| 20:33 The Iranian king’s grandees and counselors approved of this plan and confirmed that it was fitting to do it:
|
20:34 Իսկ թագաւորն Պարսից Շապուհ մեծաւ ստիպով ստիպէր զթագաւորն Հայոց զԱրշակ, զի առցէ գնասցէ զնա ընչ ինքեան յԱսորեստան, զի անդ մեծափառ պատուով եւ փեսայութեամբ մեծարեսցէ զնա:
| 20:34 Then king Shapuh of Iran greatly pressured king Arshak of Armenia to go with him to Asorestan so that he might exalt him there with very glorious honor and by making him his son- in- law:
|
20:35 Իսկ Արշակ եւ ամենայն զօրք իւր տաղտապէին երթալ զհեռի ճանապարհն. զի ամենայն ոք յանձնիւր տուն յիւրաքանչիւր տեղի զօրէն բարուց հայաստան մարդկան անձկացեալ էին:
| 20:35 But king Arshak and all of his troops were annoyed at the prospects of going on such a long journey, for each of them, after the custom of Armenians, longed for his own tun and his own customary place:
|
20:36 Եւ եղեւ իբրեւ ի վերայ հասանէր իրացն Անդովկ նահապետն Սիւնեաց գաւառին, եթէ Շապուհ թագաւորն Պարսից կամի տալ զդուստր իւր կնութեան Արշակայ թագաւորին Հայոց, մեծապէս երկեաւ, եւ բախեցաւ նորա կասկած մտացն իւրոց:
| 20:36 Now when Andovk, the nahapet of the district of Siwnik, learned that king Shapuh of Iran wanted to marry his daughter to king Arshak of Armenia, he was very frightened and his mind was wracked with suspicions:

20:37 Զի եդ ի մտի իւրում` թէ յորժամ առցէ Արշակ կին իւր զդուստր թագաւորին Պարսից, յայտ է այնուհետեւ` թէ անարգի դուստր նորա:
| 20:37 that when the Iranian king gave Arshak his daughter, his own daughter Paranjem would be dishonored afterwards:
|
20:38 Վասն զի Փառանձեմ դուստր Անդովկայ, որ էր կին լեալ Գնելոյ, ի ժամանակի անդ էր կին Արշակայ թագաւորին Հայոց. կասկածէր նա` թէ գուցէ յորժամ այլ առցէ, զնորայն անարգեսցէ:
| 20:38 For at that time Andovk’s daughter, Paranjem who had been Gnel’s wife, was the wife of king Arshak of Armenia, and Andovk suspected that as soon as Arshak took another wife, his daughter would be dishonored:

20:39 Անկանէր այնուհետեւ Անդովկ ի հնարս հնարել, եւ ի ծուփս խորհրդոց, գտանել պատճառս` զի ո՛ գիտէ կարասցէ ցրուել զսէրն մեծ, որ էր անկեալ ի մէջ թագաւորացն երկոցունց:
| 20:39 Andovk then fell to thinking to find some ruse by which he could destroy the great affection which had blossomed between the two kings:
|
20:40 Նախ բազում ոսկի զօրավարին Հայոց Վասակայ Անդովկն մատուցանէր, սոյնպէս եւ զամենայն մեծամեծսն կաշառէր, զի հնարեսցի քակել զմեծ սէրն` որ իցեն ի մէջ թագաւորացն երկոցունց:
| 20:40 First, Andovk presented much gold to Vasak, the general of Armenia, and he similarly bribed all the grandees, to devise some way of destroying the great affection between the two kings:
|
20:41 Եւ ամենայն մեծամեծքն ձեռն յանձին հարկանէին. առեալ ոսկւոյն կաշառօք խաւարեցան:
| 20:41 All the grandees accepted, blinded by the gold with which they had been bribed:
|
20:42 Ապա զմի ոմն յաւագաց թագաւորին Պարսից ի ներքին ի բուն խորհրդականացն ի բանի իւրում առնէր Անդովկն զհնարաւորութեամբն, զնենգաւորութեանն դաւաճանութեամբ մեքենայութեամբն, զի բանս արկցէ ընդ թագաւորին Պարսից ընդ Շապուհ եւ ընդ Արշակ:
| 20:42 Then Andovk approached a certain one of the seniors of the Iranian king, making him one of his inner and central counselors in this matter so that he would through any means - treachery, deceit, or caprice - create tension between Shapuh, king of Iran, and Arshak:

20:43 Եւ տայր նմա Անդովկ ոսկի բազում եւ անհամար, եւ դնէր բանս ի բերան. զի իբրեւ կերպարանս գուշակի արասցէ ասել ցարքայ Արշակ, թէ ապրեցո զանձն քո, զի ճշգրիտ խորհուրդ խորհեալ է թագաւորին Պարսից ունել զքեզ եւ սպանանել:
| 20:43 Andovk gave him a huge, inestimable amount of gold and told him to say, as an informer to king Arshak: “ Look out for your life, for truly the king of Iran has planned to seize and kill you:
|
20:44 Եւ յորժամ դու զայս ասասցես, ասէ, եւ զմեզ հրամայեսջիր կոչել ի խորհուրդն. եւ զքո բանս աւագանին հաստատեն:
| 20:44 Andovk continued: “ When you have said this, get Arshak to summon us to a council, and the nobility will confirm your words:
|
20:45 Ապա գայր մտանէր խորհրդակից արքային Պարսից առ արքայն Հայոց. խօսել սկսանէր ընդ նմա զբանս ի բերան եդեալ Անդուկայն չարագործի, եւ ասէր` թէ արքայդ Հայոց Արշակ, ապրեցո զանձն քո. զի խորհուրդ խորհեալ է թագաւորին Պարսից Շապհոյ ունել զքեզ եւ սպանանել:
| 20:45 The counselor of the Iranian king then went to the king of Armenia and began to speak the words which the malefactor Andovk had put in his mouth, saying: “ Arshak, king of Armenia, look out for your life, for Shapuh, the king of Iran plans to seize and kill you:

20:46 Կայր հիացեալ եւ զարմացեալ արքայն Արշակ ընդ բանսն ընդ այնոսիկ, եւ ասէ. Ի մեծի վաստակոցն իմոց ի վերայ ա՞յս հատուցումն ի նոցանէն:
| 20:46 King Arshak was stunned by these words and said: “ Is that the reward I am to receive from him for my great labors:
|
20:47 Ապա հրաման տայր կոչել զառաջեաւ իւրով արքայ Արշակ զամենայն զմեծամեծս իւր, եւ զամենայն խորհրդակիցս իւր, զՎասակ սպարապետն, եւ զԱնդովկն զաներ իւր, եւ որ միանգամ էին նախարարքն. եւ պատմէր նոցա զոր միանգամ լուաւ ինքն ի պարսկէ անտի:
| 20:47 Then king Arshak ordered all of his grandees summoned into his presence and all of his counselors, and the sparapet Vasak and his father- in- law Andovk and, generally, all of the naxarars. Then he told them what he had just heard from that Iranian:

20:48 Ապա եւ նոքա ընդ մի բերան ասէին ընդ նմա, թէ մեք զայդ վաղ լուաք, ցքեզ չիշխեցաք ասել. այլ իրքդ այդ հաստատ են:
| 20:48 They all replied together: “ We heard that long ago, but did not dare to tell you. However, those words are correct:

20:49 Բայց արդ, արքայ, գիտեա տես զիա՞րդ ապրեցուսցես զանձն քո եւ զմեզ:
| 20:49 Now, king, see what you can do to save yourself and us:
|
20:50 Ապա արքայ Արշակ բազում պարգեւս գանձուց ոսկւոյ եւ արծաթոյ տայր պարսկին այնմիկ, որ ասաց նմա զբանս զայսոսիկ:
| 20:50 King Arshak then gave the Iranian who had told him many gifts of gold and silver treasures:

20:51 Եւ ինքեանք կազմեցան պատրաստեցան. խորհուրդ խորհեցաւ Արշակ թագաւորն Հայոց. եւ յառնէին ի գիշերի որ միանգամ մարդ էր ի բանակին Հայոց, հեծան ի ձիս եւ փախեան:
| 20:51 The Armenians organized and prepared themselves, and king Arshak of Armenia thought. Everyone in the Armenian banak then arose at night, mounted, and fled:

20:52 Եւ առ ետեղ թողին զխորանս եւ զվրանս, զկահ եւ զկարասի եւ զկազմած իւրեանց, եւ զբանակն իւրեանց, եւ գնացին գաղտուկ. եւ ոչ ոք ի բանակէն Պարսից գիտացին զայն մինչ ցայգ ցառաւօտն:
| 20:52 Leaving behind the tents, pavilions, furniture, goods, equippage and banak, they departed stealthily. And no one in the Iranian banak knew about this until morning:
|
20:53 Եւ իբրեւ եղեւ ժամ այգորելի առ թագաւորն Պարսից, եւ ամենայն թագաւորք եւ իշխանք մեծամեծք իւր այգորեալ գային արքային Պարսից, բայց միայն ոչ ուրեք ի մէջ երեւէր թագաւորն Հայոց Արշակ հանդերձ իւրովք մեծամեծօքն:
| 20:53 When it was the hour to bid good morning to the Iranian king, all the kings, and his grandee princes came to greet the Iranian king but nowhere among them was the king of Armenia, Arshak, with his grandees:

20:54 Ապա տայր հրաման Շապուհ թագաւորն Պարսից իւրոցն, երթեալ տեսանել` թէ զինչ իրք իցեն ի բանակին Հայոց թագաւորին Արշակայ. զի այնչափ ժամս յամեաց գալ յայգորել թագաւորին Պարսից Շապհոյ:
| 20:54 So Shapuh the king of Iran ordered his men to go and see what had occurred in the banak of Arshak, king of Armenia, that he had so delayed in coming to bid good morning to the king of Iran, Shapuh:

20:55 Ապա երթեալ տեսանէին, զի թափուր կայր բանակն առանց մարդոյ. զի թողեալ էր իւրեանց զխորանս եւ զվրանս եւ զհովանոցս եւ զսրահակս եւ զգահոյս եւ զանկողինս եւ զկահ եւ զկազմածս եւ զկարասի իւրեանց, եւ զգանձս իւրեանց անգամ. բայց միայն զզէնս իւրեանց որ բարձեալ էին ընդ ինքեանս, եւ գնացեալք:
| 20:55 They went and saw that the banak was empty and without people, for the Armenians had left their pavilions, tents, canopies, hangings, gahs, beds, furniture, baggage and equippage, and even their treasures. They had taken only their weapons, borne aloft, and departed:

20:56 Եւ որք չոգան ի բանակն, գային զամենայնն պատմէին Շապհոյ արքային Պարսից:
| 20:56 Those who had gone to the banak returned and related everything to Shapuh, the king of Iran:

20:57 Եւ իբրեւ լուաւ Շապուհ արքայն Պարսից, քանզի այր իմաստուն էր, գիտացեալ ի կարծիս իմաստութեան իւրոյ զիրսն` որ ինչ եղեւն, անդէն ասաց` թէ այն փախուստ թագաւորին Հայոց յիմոց աստի եղեալ է. զի ի մէնջ ի մերմէ ի դրանէ աստի էին, ասէ, որք փախուցին զայրն զայն զԱրշակ:
| 20:57 When Shapuh heard this since he was a wise man, he realized in his wisdom that the flight of the Armenian king was the result of something done by one of his own men. “ For,” he said, “ that man Arshak was made to flee by people from among our court here:

20:58 Ապա իւրոց աւագացն ի մեծամեծացն դեսպան ձիով զբազումս յղէր զհետ թագաւորին Հայոց, հանդերձ երդմամբ ի սէր միաբանութեան եւ յանդիմանութեան` զի դարձցին, եւ զչարախօսութեան զբանս ի մէջ ածեալ կշտամբիցեն:
| 20:58 So, he sent many of his senior grandees on a mission, galloping after the king of Armenia bearing with them the promise of a vow of affectionate alliance and a reproach that the Armenians return so that they examine the slander and rebuke it:

20:59 Եւ ոչ կամեցաւ արքայն Հայոց ունկնդիր լինել բանիցն պատգամաւորացն թագաւորին Պարսից Շապհոյ, եւ ոչ դարձաւ այլ անդրէն յերկիրն Պարսից:
| 20:59 But the Armenian king did not want to listen to the words of the messengers of Shapuh, the king of Iran, and they did not turn back to the land of Iran:

20:60 Ապա յայն օրէ հետէ եւ անդր յուզեցաւ պատերազմ գրգռութիւն մարտից ճակատուց ի մէջ թագաւորին Հայոց Արշակայ եւ ի մէջ թագաւորին Պարսից Շապհոյ ամս աւելի քան զերեսուն:
| 20:60 From that day forth warfare and the agitation of battles stirred between the king of Armenia, Arshak, and Shapuh, king of Iran. It continued for more than thirty years:
